Special shoutout to @adhdwithjennafree on IG for the term 'local sober'.Research shows that people with ADHD are at high risk for alcohol dependence. In this episode, I open up about the struggle of using alcohol as a nightly aid to combat insomnia, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm, only to realize the negative consequences it had on my sleep and overall well-being. Reflecting on my experience during Dry January, I discovered the extent of my cravings and how they misaligned with my values, prompting a reevaluation of my relationship with alcohol. Tune in as we explore the higher risk of alcohol use disorder among those with ADHD, and what that can mean for us.In the final segment, I share my approach to embracing "local sober," where I only drink on special occasions away from home. I recommend resources such as Alcoholics Anonymous, reaching out to a friend, and the Sober Awkward podcast. How often have you thought about committing weeks at a time to abstain from alcohol… but something came up so you caved earlier than you'd hoped?  It's happened to all of us.  For me, even in my early to mid-thirties, I started to notice alcohol was NOT serving me. Drinking alcohol— even just a few glasses of wine at dinner— felt disruptive to my health. I put weight on fast, my brain felt scrambled, and I felt hazy and moody.  I knew based on my feelings that my health would benefit so much more without it.  Now, fast forward to today— I have abstained from drinking alcohol for more than a year at a time.  The latest data is clear– there's no safe amount of alcohol that your brain and liver can tolerate. Alcohol is a straight-up poison and a neurotoxin, and it significantly disrupts our hormones and metabolism.  I mean, are we even surprised that our hormones are messing with how our alcohol hits the system? And the whole concept of the wind-down is NOT doing us any favors— it's setting us up to lose. That's why I brought Celeste Yvonne onto the show today to share the dangers of mommy-wine culture, and why it's hiding an even bigger problem happening in our society.  Now 5+ years sober, Yvonne is a better parent than ever before. And she stands by other moms in support of eliminating the pressures of drinking in motherhood.  So join us today for this powerful conversation all about how Yvonne faced her challenges head-on and decided to quit drinking for good.  If you've been feeling rundown, numb, stressed, or you just know something is off, I encourage you to consider giving up drinking for at least 14 days just see how your body shifts without alcohol in the system.  And for more support, guidance, and tips on navigating a sober challenge, you won't want to miss this podcast.  So listen now and finally take charge of serving yourself more of what your body really needs… less alcohol! Please note that while the ultimate goal is to hold MLMs accountable for harm, this is a KIND, SAFE SPACE to talk about MLMs - aka "Multi-Level Marketing" schemes. My hope is that this conversation offers clarity, hope, and encouragement to anyone who's been part of, or negatively affected by, this sneaky, insidious system. Part research, part personal story, part recovery journey...this one is a biggie, folx. Content advisory for this episode: Addiction, alcoholism, recovery, emotional abuse, and cults. My guest today is Emily Lynn Paulson. She's a mom of 5, two-time TEDx speaker, founder of Sober Mom Squad, and the author of "Hey Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, & Other Lies behind Multi-Level Marketing". We don't cover this story in the episode, but when I read it, it stopped me in my tracks: Emily was in the "million dollar club" in her MLM. One day, her MLM presented her with a "free" Lexus and held her up as an example of what could happen if you "worked hard enough". What no one knew was that Emily had to pay for the down payment, taxes, and registration fees for the car herself. She had also paid to cater the party at the car dealership, as well as countless other costs to keep up appearances. And shortly after driving away in her "free car," she was pulled over for a DUI. This is Emily's story of recovery from alcohol, which led to her "amends" for - her words - the very great level of harm she did while inside an MLM. I want to stress that if you or someone you love has been drawn in by an MLM, I really hope you stay open and stick around for this conversation. Cracking Open podcast has so many incredible guests lined up for you this season! Today's guest is Emily Paulson – a writer, Certified Professional Recovery Coach, TEDx Speaker, and the Founder of Sober Mom Squad. She is passionate about ending the shame and stigma of mental health and substance use disorders, and her own recovery path is focused on ruthless honesty, grace, self-love, and the belief that sharing our truth with each other is the best resource of all.Emily opens up about her struggle with alcoholism and how it led her to get sucked into the culture of multilevel marketing. This path made her millions but soon felt dishonest and exploitative. Once she got sober, she was able to clearly see the problematic environment of multilevel marketing and the many victims that get caught up in it.She has since authored two books: Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life, and her newly published book Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing. Emily has given two powerful TEDx talks, challenging the status quo of parenting, alcohol use, and feminism as we know it. She has also been featured in major publications such as the Today Show, New York Times, Washington Post, The Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, Next Question with Katie Couric, and the Tamron Hall Show.Today's episode is ultimately about choosing compassion over shame when you reflect on your past choices. Emily helps us understand that when we feel lonely, afraid, or have unresolved trauma, we often make decisions that we think will lead us to feel connection and "normalcy" but more often than not those decisions only lead us further away from ourselves and our truth. And when we are healed and whole, our decisions and truth become much more clear and help light the way to the life we were always meant to have. Emily's story is one of truth, sobriety, and how to get honest about the world and people around you, but most importantly with yourself.Love,MollyLearn more about Emily Paulson herePurchase Emily's books hereListen to Emily's Tedx Talks hereConnect with Emily on Facebook and Instagram Learn more about Molly Carroll hereConnect with Molly on Instagram and FacebookFeeling Stuck? It's Your Time To Get UNSTUCK3-Month Small Group Coaching ProgramStarting October 5, 2023Book a FREE discovery call with Molly today!

A few years ago, Emily Lynn Paulson didn't think she had a problem with drinking. She'd quit cold turkey for her pregnancies, after all. But there always seemed to be a reason to drink, an opportunity, an excuse. And, soon, a constant. And her kids noticed. So she made a decision, found a sponsor and a 12-step program, and quit. Now Emily is the founder of Sober Mom Squad, a Certified Professional Recovery Coach, a Facilitator of Addiction Awareness and the author of "Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life." But there was something else she needed to be honest about: her complicit relationship with a predatory multi-level marketing outfit (MLM). Drinking had helped make Emily a sales juggernaut, but she didn't like what she'd bought into. So for the second time inside a few decisive years, she intentionally pivoted away from something central to her life. In this episode of "Your New Life Blend," host Shoshanna Hecht talks to Emily about her upcoming book, "Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing," and her path away from the slippery-slope culture of casual drinking and MLM payday, and towards making amends, and changes.Emily's website: https://www.emilylynnpaulson.com/ instagram.com/emilylynnpaulsonlinkedin.com/emilylynnpaulsontwitter.com/emilypaulson facebook.com/emilylynnpaulsonSober Mom Squad: https://www.sobermomsquad.com/instagram.com/sobermomsquad"Highlight Reel: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond The Filtered Life, and Addiction"https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/highlight-real-emily-lynn-paulson/1133930990"Hey Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing"https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Hey-Hun/Emily-Lynn-Paulson/9781955905251

Episode 37: Celebrating My 3-Year Soberversary (And What That Even Has To Do With Languages)

Love, Joy, and Languages

In today's episode, I share a bit of the more personal parts of my life. Last week I celebrated three years of sobriety, and while it may not be obvious how this ties into language learning, I can say that the link between these two things is very strong for me. I can say for sure that my early experiences learning Italian while living in Italy had a strong impact on my self-doubt, which had a strong impact on how much and how often I drank in order to escape the stress and pressure I put on myself, the raw feelings of vulnerability and failure, and so much negative self-talk. And I can say for sure that how much and how often I drank had a strong negative impact on my language learning because, while I was trying to escape my negative thoughts, I also escaped the positive ones, and I masked the joy of progress I was making and the pride of what I was accomplishing in my language. So this soberversary was a perfect time for me to reflect on the things that contributed to my downward spiral, with both alcohol and languages, and what I've done to start creating a life from which I don't want to escape. It's not a far stretch for me to see similarities between my journey to and through sobriety and my language learning journey, and some of the tools I used to get and stay sober have also worked for helping me improve my mentality about languages. Thank you for listening to this vulnerable yet uplifting episode. I hope you get something out of it and are more inspired to create a joyful life for yourself with languages and beyond. It tells the story of what she did to get and stay sober, allowing her to transform her shame, guilt, and anger into self-compassion, self-discovery, and forgiveness – of herself and others. From self-loathing isolation to a joyous community of support and rediscovered intimacy with her family. From living her life engulfed in cognitive dissonance (teaching about the connection between trauma and addiction while she was drinking every evening) to the pride she feels today in being present and authentic in every aspect of her work and life. This Side of Alcohol is her story of living her sobriety out loud, telling the truth, and being at peace... Peggi is a social work instructor/coach for a local California University. She has a Master's degree from California State University at Chico and spent 16 years as a Child Welfare and Adult Protective Services social worker. This week on Talk Recovery Radio, Emily, Kiola and Lainy join the show to talk about Sober Mom Squad. The Sober Mom Squad is just as it sounds: a Squad of Moms who are already sober, those who are just dipping their toes in exploring an alcohol free lifestyle, and everything in between! Join us on Talk Recovery Radio's Facebook page streamed live Thursday from 12-1pm PST   About Sober Mom Squad   Sober Mom Squad was formed during the pandemic of 2020. Many moms found they were feeling disconnected and were drinking more than ever. Messaging around alcohol and motherhood was rampant. Maybe you're sick of the wine-mom narrative. Maybe you want to explore what an alcohol-free life looks like. Maybe you just need a community that isn't focused on boozing! We are women like you, who don't want their kids to grow up with a mom who needs wine to survive them. Our common goal is to raise children in homes where alcohol is not the focus, and help other women do the same.   Meet the Squad!  Emily  Emily Lynn Paulson is the author of Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life, and the forthcoming Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing (May 2023). She has given two powerful TEDx talks, both challenging the status quo of parenting, alcohol use, and feminism as we know it. Paulson has also been featured in major publications such as the Today Show, New York Times, Washington Post, The Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, Next Question with Katie Couric, and the Tamron Hall Show. She resides in Central Oregon with her husband and their five children.  Kiola I'm a certified nutrition coach and sober community facilitator. After working for over a decade in the fitness industry, I pivoted my coaching to serve exclusively in the recovery and sobriety space. As a woman in recovery, I'm passionate about teaching my community how to use fitness and nutrition to support our sobriety. I'm currently working towards the California state license as a Peer Support Specialist and I feel so grateful to be able to live out my life's passion in a community that is so important to me.   Lainy I work full time as a marketer in the financial services industry. While I do very much enjoy my day job, I have a  passion for mentoring women in the recovery community. I have been sober since August 31, 2020; joining sober mom squad as a member at 90 days. I fell in love with the community and became a host 1.5 years ago. I have made the best friends through SMS and truly look forward to helping women every day. Sobriety, recovery work, and Sober Mom Squad has changed my life in so many beautiful ways.

Alcohol free. Sober. Recovering Alcoholic. What's the difference? And does it really make a difference?   Today we're joined by Arielle Dyment who joined us as a special guest host from Peru. We're getting into labels in recovery. When we're new to the recovery space, we can get really caught up in the minushia. Often, the overwhelming nature of “what to do” can keep a lot of us sick. We invite you to put down the labels and pick up something useful, like a mentor or sober coach. The labels do not serve us.    This topic was inspired by a warstory from Tessa. Tessa spent most of her life thinking she was a normal drinker having gotten caught up in the mommy wine culture.  When the pandemic hit, her drinking quickly escalated very quickly. Jen Elizabeth is a sober mom, writer, sexual abuse survivor, and harm reduction specialist. She works with the Sidewalk Project, an organization that works to empower unhoused communities around the world, and is also a host at the Sober Mom Squad, a community and space to discuss all things motherhood, without the mommy juice. I invited Jen on to talk about the meaning of harm reduction and why she is so passionate about this approach to treating substance abuse. She is very outspoken about why she believes the war on drugs is not working for anybody, and why we need to shift the focus to addressing the unresolved trauma that she believes is the root of all problematic drug use – and all houselessness. She also shares her own experience of living on the street – and how learning to advocate for herself is what led to her work in advocating for others who don't have the capacity to stand up for themselves. This interview is raw and moving and real and I hope you find it as eye-opening as I did. In the episode we discuss: -The definition of “harm reduction” when it comes to treating drug and alcohol misuse.-Why alcohol is an example of “safe supply” (and the meaning of this term).-Why being sober does not make us superior.-The argument for decriminalization of all substances – and why drugs are winning the war on drugs.-Why she stopped posting “before and after” pics and how she honors the person she was before she got sober.-Why some lives are viewed as more valuable than others in our society.-Why living in close proximity to houseless communities makes us so uncomfortable.-Her personal experience of living on the streets.-Why she believes that everybody experiencing substance abuse is a trauma survivor.-Why the way we speak about people who are struggling is part of the solution.-How sobriety helps her engage more deeply with her healing work – and the practices that work for her.-Why she believes everybody should be trauma informed.-Why there's no such thing as being a perfect mom – and how to accept ourselves and our kids exactly as we are.Discover more about Jen's work with The Sidewalk Project and Sober Mom Squad and follow her on Instagram @resurrektion_of _ meBig thanks to Athletic Brewing for partnering on this episode. The Sober Mom Squad is just as it sounds: A Squad of Moms who are already sober, those who are just dipping their toes in exploring an alcohol free lifestyle, and everything in between! It was my pleasure having the entire squad on the pod. What an honor! Listen for all things mommy wine culture, holiday advice and best of the show…. WHO IS ON THE NAUGHTY LIST? No topic was off limits and the squad was a delightful mix of intelligent, fierce, pretty funny mommas. “This group was started during the COVID pandemic from an instagram post by the founder, Emily Lynn Paulson, asking how she could be of service to her audience. Jen Elizabeth, Michelle Smith, Celeste Yvonne and Jessica Landon immediately answered the call, and the Sober Mom Squad was born! As mothers, we need to connect, share experiences, share expertise, hear stories, and tell our own.  We need to know that we are not alone, and we need to feel that we are in a safe environment away from judgement and stigma. So, we started hosting a weekly free virtual meeting over zoom, discussing all things motherhood, the trials of suddenly homeschooling, the new dynamics of home life, and doing it all without "mommy juice." We found that this community filled a need that had never been filled before, so we expanded it to help even more women. Women, just like you, who are inundated with wine memes and spiked seltzer ads, yet demand MORE for yourself and your families. Women like you, who don't want their kids to grow up with a mom who needs wine to survive them. The five of us have very different backgrounds, live in different states, come from different walks of life, have different areas of expertise and training, and have different sobriety journeys. Our kids range in age from infant to 16 years old. The thing we have in common is a desire to raise children in homes where alcohol is not the focus. Our common goal is to help other women do the same thing.” – Sober Mom Squad MEET THE SQUAD: Emily Paulson: Emily is a writer, speaker, Certified Naked Mind Coach. She Recovers Designated Coach, and a member of the long-term recovery community. The Truth Behind Those Online Drinking “Highlights”. Getting Real With Emily Lynn Paulson. How “real” are all those images you see online?  The perfect Instagram families? The fancy business trips? The carefree Mom's Night Out?    Today my guest is an author, a speaker and my friend, Emily Lynn Paulson. In our conversation Emily and I dig into the truth behind the “Online Drinking Highlights” you see as you scroll through your social media feed.  Emily and I know that so many women struggle with their drinking, quietly, in private, and in their own heads - just like we did.    You might look around and see everyone else is posting a photo of the sophisticated cocktails at a bar on a date night, the pictures of friends all drinking together around the firepit, or the vacation pictures with the margarita at the beach.   And the truth is, you have no idea what anyone else's relationship with alcohol looks like, or what their marriage feels like, or how well they're coping with being a parent and with their jobs.   In this episode Emily and I talk about:   Why Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook set expectations so high for what a successful woman, mother and wife is “supposed” to be that most women inevitably can't measure up. The reality of what our lives, our jobs, our marriages and interactions with our children looked like as compared to the pictures we posted online.   Why posting your highlights on social media is such a draw. As Emily says “In those Instagram squares was the life I wished we were living: a happy marriage, a healthy wife, a happy motherhood. Behind the scenes though, we were barely surviving.”  How you can both love your kids and feel grateful for them, and also feel that motherhood is hard, draining and (yes) unfulfilling.  And why finding a safe space of women to share your struggles and honest experiences - both good and bad - can be a game changer in living a happier life.  In this episode, you learn: How to navigate the drinking culture of parenthood and “mommy juice” How to connect with your partner again after quitting drinking Why it's hard to quit alcohol when it has become part of your love language How not to gravitate toward the pretty images on Instagram and take those photos as real life because the hard stuff is hard to look at both on Instagram and in our own lives.    Emily Lynn Paulson is the author of a powerful memoir about her life, her family, her successes and struggles, excessive drinking and disordered eating, and her realization that drinking wasn't working in her life anymore.    Emily is a certified professional recovery coach, She Recovers Designated Coach, This Naked Mind Certified Coach, founder of Sober Mom Squad, and a member of the long-term recovery community.    She has appeared on media outlets including The Doctors, Parade, Today Parents, and USA Today, discussing how to end the shame and stigma of mental health by and substance abuse disorder.   Emily has been sober since January 2, 2017, her recovery path is focused on ruthless honesty, grace, self-love and is documented in her memoir, Highlight Real: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life.  Paulson's resources include one-on-one coaching, to help others evaluate whether or not alcohol is serving them in their lives. Paulson resides in Seattle with her husband and their five children.     Shownotes: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/21 Grab your  Free Sober Girls Guide To Quitting Drinking Grab your Guide To The Best Quit Lit Books For Women (Including Emily's book)     Links and Resources mentioned in this episode   Connect with Emily Lynn Paulson   Book: Highlight Real: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life   Website: www.highlightreallife.com Instagram: Highlight Real Recovery Facebook: Emily Lynn Paulson   Connect with Casey McGuire Davidson   Website: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com Instagram: Casey @ Hello Someday Coaching (@caseymdavidson) Listen to more podcast episodes to drink less + live more.
