(Partial Transcript) Episode 64 -Texas isn't Texas, Mexico isn't Mexico and Europeans go exploring and bump into a continent and are surprised to find people already there. When Europeans first encountered Texas, the world was a very different place. Well, maybe not too different because countries were fighting over land, gold, religion, natural resources, and political power much like we do today. However, it was still different; there were no cars, planes, trains, buses, electricity, fast food joints, and certainly no TV, Radio, and Internet. Moreover, without modern technology, it took a whole lot more courage to go exploring than it does today. In the late 1400s, around 1488 Portugal became the first country whose sailors were brave enough to sail out into the Atlantic Ocean. Actually they weren't, the Vikings were. Vikings sailed the Northern Atlantic around 1100 AD; but for the sake of this story, we'll give the Portuguese some credit. The Portuguese exploration was primarily along the coast of Africa. Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias was the first to sail around the Cape of Good Hope, which is the southern tip of Africa and made it to Asia. OK, remember that most of the history you learned in school was originally written by Europeans and then turned into something that Americans could relate to so it is all very Americanized. It turns out that the Chinese admiral Zheng He, sailed all around Africa and Asia around 1404. Still though Dias' trip was important because otherwise, to travel to Asia for trading purposes to pick up all the goods that society wanted required a lengthy overland trip. His success lead mariners from other nations to wonder if there might be a shorter way to Asia that did not encroach on Portuguese routes. Even though people wondered about a shorter route, there were few nations with the capability to send ships out into the Atlantic to find an answer. Things changed when Isabella of Castille and her husband Ferdinand II of Aragon succeeded in driving out the Muslims who had ruled Southern Spain for over 300 years and united the country under a Catholic flag. The conquest was complete by 1492 and it was at that time, Christopher Columbus convinced the monarchs that by finding a Western route to India, Spain would have increased military, economic, and just as important, religious power. As many remember from American history classes in grade school children are taught that Christopher Columbus “discovered” America. In truth, while he was one of the first Europeans (right now I won't talk about the Vikings who landed on the Coast of Canada 300 years earlier) to reach what, in his time, was the “New World”. The islands he encountered are the Bahamas, Cuba, and Hispaniola in 1492 and in 1493; he landed in our current Puerto Rico. All islands inhabited by people as they had been for thousands of years. Columbus claimed all the land he encountered for Spain, and three years later in 1496, the Spanish put their first settlement in Santo Domingo in what is now the Dominican Republic. From those early arrival points and settlements, the Spanish began to explore the region, usually going up and down the coast and mapping the shorelines, still looking for a short cut to India. By 1501, Spanish sailors had explored all the way, up to what is now Newfoundland and Labrador in present day Canada. To reach North America from the islands, it was inevitable that the ships would bump into Florida, and they did. However, they thought that Florida was just another island. In 1519, the governor of Jamaica, Francisco de Garay, sent out an expedition to explore what was considered an unknown country between the Río Pánuco of Mexico (which empties near current day Tampico, Mexico) and the "island" of Florida. Lt. Alonso Álvarez de Pineda set out with four ships and 270 men to explore, and he sailed into the current Gulf of Mexico. Upon reaching the west coast of Florida and sailing nort...
European folk, besieged in the East and invaded in the South, believed their civilization was at stake. They heard all about the Muslim invasions in the Balkans and the Muslim destruction of Christian Egypt. So the truth is there were many battles prior to the Crusades and in this episode I unpack three of those: one in Syria, one in Constantinople, and one in Southern Spain. What particular things ocurred in those battles to swing the outcome? What did the Muslims want? What did they especially want from out of Constantinople? What particular things (weather even) greatly impacted these battles? How did each respective side theologically interpret the outcome of the battles? In the show's opening I reflect on how the Gospel works inside both persons and cultures. Against shallow (popular) piety I argue the Gospel does not come to destroy the person, or the culture. And in fact? The Gospel does not come to make each respective person or culture more American. Come laugh and think with me.

Kirsty and Simon are back after a weeks sabbatical and Episode 10 is a rollercoaster of updates, revelations, and the kind of random tangents that make you wonder how they ever stay on topic.Kicking things off, we get the Kirsty Update—she's been living her best life, probably sipping tea from a mug that says “Boss Lady” while plotting world domination. Meanwhile, Simon´s update reveals he's been up to his usual antics—likely something involving hurting himself or arguing with the neighbor's cat. Then comes a revelation, no spoilers, but let's just say one of them drops a truth bomb so big it could knock the Wi-Fi out. Kirsty pivots to her latest brag—she's got two swingy chairs, and she's convinced the Kardashians nicked her idea in their present to Kris Jenner... “I'm basically a Kardashian influencer now,” she declares, while Simon mutters something about her needing a reality check instead of a reality show. They also tackle a big question as Kirsty suddenly declares that Spanish schools probably have the same issues as British ones, just in a different language? which is followed by lots of laughing until finally, the episode crescendos with Kirsty and Simon coming to a dramatic decision. What could it be!Kirsty and Simon run a small, yet perfectly formed, Bed & Breakfast in the mountains, 30 mins north of Malaga in Southern Spain.Six years, one pandemic, two guesthouses, 3 series of A New Life In The Sun, this is their journey...! The good, the bad and the ugly, nothing is off the breakfast table. Thanks for joining usKirsty & Simon xxwww.casakisi.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We are speaking with Paco Calvo, who joins us from Southern Spain. Paco Calvo is a renowned cognitive scientist and a philosopher of biology, known for his groundbreaking research in the field of plant cognition and intelligence. At the University of Murcia he leads the Minimal Intelligence Lab (MINT Lab), focusing on the study of minimal cognition in plants. He is the author of Planta Sapiens. At his lab he studies the ecological basis of plant intelligence by conducting experimental studies at the intersection of the areas of plant neurobiology and ecological psychology. His interdisciplinary work combines insights from biology, philosophy, and cognitive science to explore the fascinating world of plant behavior, decision-making, and problem-solving. This is the backdrop to our conversation. Paco is a philosopher and scientist who actively wonders and asks questions about plants – and tests for them. Do plants think? Do plants feel? How do plants make decisions. We discuss how these questions bother the current heterodoxy … and the current calls for the defunding of his scientific work. We learn about “fast science”, the dangers of working for a membership, the importance of considering all hypotheses ... and we are reminded about Einstein and his take on ideas vs testing. We hear from him his ultimate obsession and as a treat, his take on language. The history of science is the history of the blow to human ego. See also the episode with Dr. Vera Tiesler (ep 81). In every age, empires create words to describe the people in the societies they seek to dominate and exploit. Eventually, these terms are turned inward and used against themselves. The Greco-Romans—and their eastern heirs, whom modern scholars call the Byzantines—labeled those outside their empire as barbarians. The colonials who settled the Americas, after dismantling the peaceful coexistence of Semitic peoples in Southern Spain, referred to the inhabitants of this supposed “new” land as savages.Whether communists, leftists, or terrorists, from age to age and generation to generation, we rely on the notion of the alien or foreigner to demonize the other.Humanities scholars, clinging to the illusion of progress, speak as though they have just discovered this problem, but wisdom literature has tackled this since before Hellenism emerged as a blot on humanity's historical record. When Jesus sets out to make a pilgrimage to Decapolis, he does so under the control of his Father's will, who breathes into his sail and sends him on a mission—not to trample underfoot the barbarians at the edge of Constantine's empire, but to confront Constantine himself. It is Constantine, Habibi, who is the problem. The Emperor is the barbarian from whom the Lord's inheritance must be saved. This week, I discuss Luke 8:22, which exposes the true enemy of God, not the outsiders, but the emperor himself.Show Notesπλέω / מ-ל-א (mem-lamed-alef) / م-ل-أ (mīm-lām-hamza)That which fills, makes full; fullness, full amount, measure, extent:“Sing to the Lord a new song,Sing his praise from the end of the earth! You who go down to the sea, and all that fills it (וּמְלֹאוֹ umelo'o),You islands, and those who live on them.” (Isaiah 42:10)The root مَلَأَ (malaʾa) in Arabic can be found in words such as:مَلَأَ (malaʾa) - to fillمَلِيء (malīʾ) - full, filledمَمْلُوء (mamlūʾ) - filled (passive participle)امْتَلَأَ (imtalaʾa) - to become full, to be filledمِلْء (milʾ) - fullness, fillingتَمْلِيء (tamlīʾ) - filling (verbal noun)مَلَأ (malaʾ) - assembly, ruling council, crowd, publicἄνεμος / ר-ו-ח (resh-waw-ḥet) / ر-و-ح (rāʾ–wāw–ḥāʾ)ἄνεμος (anemos, “wind,” 8:23) When the wind fully enters (מְלֹא / مِلْء) the sail, it takes shape, and the boat is propelled forward. Classical Arabic poetry often compares the full sail to a “breathing chest”—expanding, alive, and responsive to the unseen force of wind (رِيح rīḥ, which in Scripture functions as God's breath or “Spirit.”) The biblical Hebrew term רוּחַ (ruaḥ) and the Arabic رُوح (rūḥ) both function as wind or divine Spirit. The Greek verb πληρόω (plēroō), meaning “to fill,” “make full,” or “complete,” also corresponds to מ-ל-א and appears numerous times throughout Paul's letters, notably: καὶ μὴ μεθύσκεσθε οἴνῳ, ἐν ᾧ ἐστιν ἀσωτία, ἀλλὰ πληροῦσθε ἐν Πνεύματι,“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.”(Ephesians 5:18)Paul deliberately chooses a second term in 1 Corinthians—not πληρόω, but κορέννυμι—to convey sharp sarcasm, mocking the leaders in Roman Corinth for being full of themselves and smug in their self-satisfaction. The only other appearance of this Pauline term, which does not occur in the Septuagint, is in Acts 27, which corresponds to Luke by way of authorship: “καὶ ἐμπλησθέντες τροφῆς ἐκούφισαν τὸ πλοῖον ἐκβαλλόμενοι τὸν σῖτον εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν.”“And when they had eaten enough (ἐμπλησθέντες), they lightened the ship by throwing out the wheat into the sea.” (Acts 27:38)See also: ب-و-ء (bā-wāw-hamza) / ב-ו-א (bet-waw-alef) πλέω also corresponds to בוא (Jonah 1:3), which aligns with Acts 27:38. الْمَلَأ (al-malaʾ) “ruling council, community leaders, chiefs, the elites” is a recurring function in the Qur'an, where prophets confront the elite power structures in their communities. The malaʾ are gatekeepers of institutional norms and the status quo, resisting the prophets' calls for repentance and submission to God.قَالَ الْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَاحِرٌ عَلِيمٌqāla al-malaʾu min qawmi firʿawna inna hādhā lasāḥirun ʿalīm“The elite of Pharaoh's people said, ‘Indeed, this is a learned magician.'”Surah al-Shuʿarāʾ 26:34 (ref. to Moses)فَقَالَ الْمَلَأُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِن قَوْمِهِ مَا هَـٰذَا إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ…faqāla al-malaʾu alladhīna kafarū min qawmihi mā hādhā illā basharun mithlukum…“So the chiefs of his people who disbelieved said, ‘This is only a man like yourselves…'”Surah al-Muʾminūn 23:24 (ref. to Noah)The malaʾ belittle the prophets:• “He's just a man like us.” (26:155)• “He's a liar.” (26:186)• “He's possessed/crazy.” (26:154)• “He's a magician.” (26:34) ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Season 6, Episode 9 of The Journey with Kirsty and Simon kicks off a bit heavy—think Simon's existential crisis meets Kirsty's caffeine withdrawal, but don't worry, we lighten the load quick.Ever wondered what a lamb's got to do with Easter? Neither did we... Then we plunge into the new Disney Snow White movie—spoiler: Simon's got big opinions, while Kirsty's just here for the apples. Speaking of drama, Kirsty's raving about The Father—she's ready to nab a starring role in the next stage production, probably as the confused furniture. Summer's allegedly on its way, or so the flies buzzing round our office reckon—cheeky sods didn't get the memo about keeping the noise down. Sunday's UK Mother's Day, so cue Simon not caring while Kirsty plots a day with the chiddlers and says ‘Cheers for not disowning me.'Also involved is a heated debate on how to say ‘croissant'—is it ‘cwah-sont' or ‘cross-aunt'? Answers on a postcard, preferably with a lamb sketch.Oh, and breaking news: Kirsty's now brave enough to ride a roller coaster since she's stopped shitting herself in lifts—progress, folks!Grab some tea and a croissant. This season 6 expect more opinions, more guesthouse, more mindset and more laughs along the way.Kirsty and Simon run a small, yet perfectly formed, Bed & Breakfast in the mountains, 30 mins north of Malaga in Southern Spain.Six years, one pandemic, two guesthouses, 3 series of A New Life In The Sun, this is their journey...! This week, the duo kicks things off with Bellend Monday, unloading their frustrations about the week's most irritating characters—because who doesn't need a good vent to start the week? From there, they explore the Let Them Theory, debating whether it's better to let people be their messy selves or step in and sort them out. Spoiler: Kirsty's got strong opinions, and Simon's just along for the laugh. Things take a surreal turn with AI on Jerry Springer, where they imagine a world of artificial intelligence hashing it out on daytime TV—think Grok throwing chairs at Siri while Jerry referees. Speaking of Grok, the pair can't resist poking fun at the idea that Grok has daddy issues, speculating on what kind of cosmic parenting drama xAI's creation might be working through. The weather gets a shoutout too, as they lament how the rain in Spain never stops this March, turning their usual sunny anecdotes into a soggy saga. Meanwhile, Ollie struts into the conversation with his potential new boots.Back in the UK, Kirsty and Simon unpack the phenomenon of the UK TikTok Tea Time Alarm—is it a genius national ritual or just another app-driven distraction? Finally, they wrap up with a cheeky question: who's up for a double Sunday? The hosts pitch their dream of extending the weekend, complete with extra roast dinners and zero guilt. Kirsty paints the scene of Derik's tail-wagging announcements, and muses he is Employee of the Month material...Tea time stirs up a spat: Kirsty has no idea what the difference is before Simon thinks he can explain but fails. For all those who want to know...? Afternoon tea's the posh one, high tea's heartier. Kirsty's eyeing scones, Simon's dreaming of pie. Then they dive into With Love, Meghan on Netflix—Kirsty's hooked on Meghan's jam-making and flower-arranging, calling it “posh but oddly soothing.” Simon's less sold, grumbling that it's “too much faffing about” and wondering why there's no episode on bacon sarnies. They spar over whether it's aspirational or just bonkers, with Kirsty questioning peoples opinions and why anyone needs them, ironically giving her opinion. The late check-in drama reaches a conclusion. Was it a drama or merely a storm in an afternoon tea cup.Orange Juice gate has an update. Buckle up, Journeyers, because this week's episode is a wild ride through late check-ins, cloudy eyes, and a citrus showdown for the ages! Kirsty and Simon are back with their usual chaos, and things kick off with Kirsty inexplicably acknowledging that she repeats EVERYTHING Simon says—like, everything. “Pass the mic,” says Simon. “Pass the mic,” echoes Kirsty.Meanwhile, employee Clive's cataracts are stealing the spotlight (or blurring it, at least). The poor guy's squinting his way through life, and Kirsty and Simon have some very helpful suggestions—like “just get new eyes, Clive!” Late check-ins are also on the menu, with tales of flustered guests, driving in the dark, with Simon and Kirsty having to decide when is a late check in a late check in.Then, it's the moment you've all been waiting for: Employee of the Month gets crowned! Cue the imaginary trumpets and a heated debate over who's earned the title—spoiler alert, it's not Clive's cataracts. But the real drama unfolds when Kirsty drops a bombshell: she doesn't recommend something (gasp!). What could it be?Finally, it's breakfast juices that sparks the fire—Simon's all about the orange while Kirsty's Team Anything will do. Voices are raised, juice is spilled (metaphorically, we hope), and the great OJ debate leaves us all questioning our breakfast choices.Join Kirsty and Simon for an episode packed with laughs, echoes, and a little bit of eyesight woes. It's the 30th episode of That Greenwich Life and the first of 2025! I can't believe how far we've come, and I'm so excited to kick off the year with a super fun special episode with tons of travel ideas as part of That Greenwich Life's 5-part 2025 Glow-Up series this month. No New Year's Resolutions here because – let's be honest – who really keeps them? I know I don't. Instead of only hitting the gym hardcore with the rest of the pack (ok…we can do that also), I'm focusing on five areas of our lives where we could all use just a little bit more self-care, attention and direction. This week in Part 1, I'm joined by my longtime friend and incredible NYC-based travel journalist, Juliet Izon, whose work has been featured in The New York Times, Travel + Leisure, The Wall Street Journal and more. Together – since you all know by now I'm a travel writer as well! - we're sharing travel ideas and tips for every season and school break, whether you're dreaming of a spring getaway, summer escape, or a holiday trip to end the year. From Grenada to Morocco, Norway to San Diego, there's something here for everyone, no matter your style or budget. What's Inside: • February Break Inspiration: Grenada's serene Silver Sands Beach House and my upcoming trip to Beaches Turks & Caicos (with a magical stop at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter on the way back to Greenwich!). • Spring Break Favorites: Morocco and Southern Spain for culture and adventure, or Mallorca for a quieter, off-season vibe. • Summer Escapes: Norway's fjords and culinary treasures, or a surprising pick—Vail, Colorado—perfect for hiking and llama treks. • Holiday Travel Magic: Juliet shares her wintertime Lake Placid experience at Lake Placid Lodge, while I talk about the incredible Hotel del Coronado in San Diego. Special Thanks: PodPopuli for hosting me and to this episode's sponsors, Illume Fertility and Steam Greenwich. llume Fertility is a leading fertility and family-building practice serving the tri-state area since 2002, led by an award-winning team of highly credentialed, board-certified reproductive endocrinologists. I wish I knew about them when I was going through my grueling IVF journey. Visit IllumeFertility.com for more info. Steam on Greenwich Avenue is your perfect solution for taking the night off from cooking. Visit www.SteamGreenwich.com for authentic dishes like dim sum, noodles, rice, duck and more – and enjoy a meal that's fresh, homemade and that the whole family will love. Spain is reeling from what has been described as one of the worst natural disasters in its recent history. Rescue workers are struggling to find those feared missing and officials say it's not clear how many people are still unaccounted for. Hundreds of soldiers have been deployed to help. We hear from local people affected by the floods, from the Spanish Red Cross and from our reporter on the ground. Also on the programme: North Korea test fires a ballistic missile which seems to have flown higher and for longer than ever before; and how a comment about women's self defence sparked a huge social media response. By chance, young dancer Emina meets equally youthful, trumpet-playing soldier Alphonse in a barn in the mountains of war-torn Southern Spain. They are both innocent and experienced in entirely different ways. Initially wary, they tell each other stories that weave fact and fiction. She lies and he believes her. He tells the truth and she mistrusts him. But when he plays and she dances, they understand each other perfectly. Andalusia in southern Spain is attracting the attention of mining companies who want to extract metal ore. Near to Seville, the village of Aznalcollar is in the process of receiving the final permits to reopen a mine that was closed 26 years ago. In 1998, a wastewater reserve pool at the Los Frailes mine burst, spewing millions of cubic metres of toxic mud onto nearby farmland, rivers and protected wetlands. FRANCE 24's Sarah Morris reports.

The King Charles III England Coast Path was named to celebrate the coronation last year - and the plan was to make 2,700 miles of coastal path available to walkers. But, on the Isle of Wight, the Ramblers Association says some landowners won't allow access for the path, so it will have to detour away from the coast. One of those is the Osbourne House Estate - the former home of Queen Victoria, which was given to the nation in 1902.A bio-tech company has developed a new technique to enhance carbon capture in the soil. Crushed basalt rock can added to soil to capture carbon in a process called "enhanced rock weathering". Now, FabricNano has developed a protein powder made of enzymes which are already found naturally in the soil, which speeds it up. And for farmers struggling with low prices, selling produce direct to the consumer can be a solution. But platforms to access markets large enough to sell entire crops, have been thin on the ground. We hear from farmers in Southern Spain who are now selling hundreds of tonnes of their fruit directly to consumers across Europe every year through a website called Crowdfarming.Presented by Anna Hill Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Heather Simons
As a historically rich mining jurisdiction dating from the time of the Romans, Spain still maintains a dominant role in the mining industry for minerals such as Copper and Tin. When your boss tells you to do something, you do it. When your boss is Troy Johnson, food critic and Chief Content Officer of San Diego Magazine, texting you: “I just left Tunaville. He's doing amazing stuff. Get Tommy on the podcast,” well, you get Tommy Gomes on the Happy Half Hour podcast. Gomes, a commercial fisherman by trade and blood, is no stranger to the airwaves and pages of SDM. He's been a guest on the pod a few times before, and we've written about him glowingly because of the work he's doing to improve San Diego's fisheries and the shopping options for the people who eat from them. These days, Gomes runs TunaVille, a seafood shop at Driscoll's Wharf in San Diego Harbor that serves local, only. It opened last May. The fish is caught by residents on city boats, and is delivered 10 feet away to the storefront. “It never sees the back of a truck, our fish,” Gomes says in the episode. Tunaville is a partnership with another fisherman and local seafood icon, Mitch Conniff of Mitch's Seafood, and a handful of other local fishing families who have bought in. Restaurants like Herb & Wood, Solare, and Juan Jasper, for example, are clients, sourcing their treats from the sea from Gomes. Gomes is also tinkering with different fish preparations, some of which we sample on air. He's experimenting with dry aging tuna—traditions popular in Japan and Spain, for example—and he brought in everything from a gorgeous 15-week aged bluefin slab to mojama, a cured tuna muscle not unlike Jamón Ibérico. It can be found mainly on tables in bars in Southern Spain, and not many places else. Except for TunaVille. While he's doing all this, Gomes also has a top-rated show on Outdoor Channel, aptly called The Fishmonger. In it, he travels around the country telling the stories of fishing families and their plights of declining stocks, closed fisheries, tough regulations, and other woes of a struggling American industry. We talk about all of this and other issues with sustainability and greenwashing in this episode. We also get into some news: Troy and I discussed our end-of-2023 articles detailing the best new restaurants in San Diego and dining trends we saw last year, some of which we expect to continue into next year (inflation, omakase-everything, more actually-good Italian restaurants, bakeries); cake donut wizards Sidecar Donuts will be opening a new spot on Kettner Boulevard in Little Italy; and Food Network star Lauren Lawless will be opening Ramen World, a serve-your-own spot somewhere in Mid-City.
This month we bring you a conversation Abby convened at Groundswell Festival back in June, focused on Landscape Scale Regeneration. We hear from three people involved in different ways in an initiative in Waterford, Ireland. This discussion expands upon the Commonland initiative in Southern Spain we featured back in Episode 68, highlighting the power of a common vision and the benefits of working across a whole region.
How do we build the world we are longing for in the here and now? This is the question that orients the work of my friend, Sól Gonzalez. Sol is an intuitive coach who understands their work with others as the act of holding and mirroring. Their bio is included here at the end. But right now I want to tell you that I have learned and grown a lot through my relationship with Sól. While our friendship is fun, loving and personal. They also hold an archetypal energy. A way of being and sensing in the world that can feel quite different than how I go about the same effort. There is something rich and revelatory when I meet Sól at this juncture. You will appreciate this conversation. We cover lots of grounds. Some of Sól's story. Their approach to coaching. Their commitment to justice and how they contend with the intensity of living in a world that includes horrors such as what is happening in Gaza. While remaining connected to the good, the true and the beautiful. Definitely let me know what you take from this conversation. More About Sól: Sól (they/them), of solstice healing, is a white and indigenous Venezuelan-American intuitive process holder, space facilitator, and energy worker. They are a Certified Healing, Justice and Liberation life coach, culture worker, anti-oppression organizational consultant, and lifelong grief and love apprentice. They believe it is imperative to be building the world we are longing for in the here and now, in our relationships, “for our survival's sake”. That the differing collective crises we are living through, if midwived with intention, have the capacity to bring us towards the liberatory futures our descendents deserve. Sól is an aspiring abolitionist, a steadfast lover of possibility, and a student of the land. They relate to life, grief, love and justice with reverence, creativity and devotion. Their approach and gifts are best suited for those ready for personal and/or collective change. Sól is a descendant of the Carib/Karinha Indians of the Northeast region of Venezuela, a descendant of people from the Levant region as well as from Southern Spain. They have their own practice under solstice healing as well as are a co-founding member of the worker cooperative, Facilitate Change. Seville in Southern Spain is very popular with tourists, with its rich history, stunning architecture, great food and the flamenco music that was born here. But not everyone reaps the economic benefits the three million annual visitors bring to town. There is a stark gulf between rich and poor.
More than 1300 years ago, Moorish rulers had irrigation canals built in southern Spain. Some of this infrastructure is still in use today and has proven ideal for small farmers.
During their very first meeting, musicians Lamiae Naki and Nat Hulskamp wrote their first song together and decided to get married. The resulting project was Seffarine, an eclectic ensemble that blends traditional Andalusian and Moroccan music with jazz and other contemporary influences. The band is based in Portland, but has performed and recorded throughout Europe, Africa and North America. Their most recent residency was in Morocco, just days after the devastating earthquake that leveled several remote villages in the Atlas Mountains. Naki and Hulskamp join us for an in-studio performance and a conversation about their wide-ranging influences, their travels and the band’s upcoming show at the Alberta Rose Theatre, which will benefit earthquake relief efforts in Morocco.

If the recent podcast episodes about walking didn't inspire you to take a walk this episode might. My guest and her husband decided one day to go for a walk. Ninety-eight days later they're still married, possibly more fit and have things to share about what it was like to learn to adjust and adapt along the way. If camping isn't your thing, you'll like this too as its an inspiring way for a non-backpacker to consider an adventure. Guest: KATHY ELKIND is a writer, long-distance walker, and speaker who shares her love of walking adventures. Along with her husband, Elkind has walked the GR5, the Andalusian Coast-to-Coast Walk in Southern Spain, and parts of the Cammino Materano in Italy. She lives with her husband and walking partner in the Mad River Valley of Vermont. To Walk It Is to See It is her first memoir. In 2018, Kathy Elkind and her husband decided to take a grown-up “gap year” in Europe and walk the 1,400-mile Grande Randonnée Cinq (GR5) across The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. At 57, Kathy has chosen comfort over hardship: Unlike the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Coast Trail, the GR5 winds from village to village instead of campsite to campsite. She and Jim get to indulge in warm beds and delicious regional food every night and croissants in the mornings. The GR5 is not all comfort. Walking day after day for ninety-eight days bring sickness, accommodation struggles, language barriers, and storm-shrouded mountains in the Alps. Meanwhile, Kathy finds herself reflecting on difficult topics—primarily, her struggles with dyslexia, overeating, and shame. But she also finds that the walking becomes a moving meditation and the beauty of the landscape heals; she begins to discover her own wise strength; and as the days unfold, she comes to the gratifying realization that a long marriage is like a long trail: there are ups and downs and it takes hard work to keep going, but the beauty along the way is staggering. Written with raw honesty and compassion, and rich with dazzling scenery, To Walk It Is To See It will inspire you to lace up your walking shoes and discover your own path. Questions We Answer in This Episode: What made you decide to take on such a daunting adventure, despite being in what you describe as the “last third of your life?" Why do you suggest older adults should consider taking a gap year? What things did your long journey bring into focus? How did you adjust when needed or did you find reasons to change plans? . What became important for your personal definition of eating well while on vacation (some would not call walking 1400 miles a vacation)? You open the book with a scene standing in a river naked, and many women would find the idea of standing in broad daylight even with their partner of 27 years, naked, a little precarious or embarrassing. How did the 1400-mile walk change your body esteem, if it did, or were you always so confident? I sincerely hope you've taken a walk while you listened to this one. New Talk Art! We meet artist Tim Stoner (b. 1970, UK), best know for his paintings, which we explore in depth in this fascinating discussion!!!Before settling in London full-time, Tim lived and worked between London and Ronda, Southern Spain. In Ronda, a village in Andalucía, he began experimenting with unfinished canvases submerging them in swimming pools, pouring dissolving chemicals and distressing their surfaces with palette knives, scalpels and sanding discs. Often reworked over several years Tim creates layered ethereal abstract scenes.Conceived from a multitude of drawings and works on paper, Stoner approaches his paintings as palimpsests, with some of the scenes described as much by the removal and erasure of painting, as by the addition of materials. They have often been amended and reworked over a period of several years. The final paintings become much like visual autopsies, their visible layers revealing damaged, dissected brushstrokes, and elements of the picture surface flayed away to reveal earlier forms and gestures. This distance from nature and the painted gesture, results in compositions which are as much abstract depictions of light, colour and movement, as recordings of the landscape.Tim Stoner was born in 1970 and grew up in London. He lives and works in London and Ronda, Spain. Stoner studied at Norwich School of Art and Design (1989−1992), the Royal College of Art, London (1992−1994), the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam (1997−1998), and attended the British School at Rome (2001). Tim Stoner was the winner of the 2001 ica Futures prize.Follow @StonerTim on Instagram.Visit his official website: www.TimStoner.net Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
