Episode 43: Nuclear winter

The Studies Show

The UK has a new Prime Minister, and one of his first acts will have been to write letters to the captains of our nuclear missile submarines, telling them what to do in the event that the UK gets obliterated by a nuclear strike. But what else might happen after a full-scale nuclear war? Many scientists—most notably Carl Sagan—have theorised that nuclear war would block out the sun, destroy crops, and maybe lead to human extinction. But it turns out this is a very controversial theory. In this rather grim episode of The Studies Show, Tom and Stuart try and work out who's right, and if nuclear winter really would be the end of the world.Another thing the new Prime Minister should be doing is reading Works in Progress magazine, the sponsor of The Studies Show. If he does, he'll find a wealth of ideas that he and his government could use to spark progress and growth in the UK - and in particular, he should be reading the classic essay “The Housing Theory of Everything”. You can find that and much more at worksinprogress.co.Show notes* Putin warning the West that Russia is “ready” for nuclear war* Ned Donovan's article on the UK Prime Minister's “Letters of Last Resort”* The 2024 test where the UK's nuclear deterrent went “plop”* Annie Jacobsen's book Nuclear War: A Scenario* A podcast episode and a Reddit thread criticising the book* Wikipedia on the Moscow-Washington and Beijing-Washington phone lines* The terrifying stories of Stanislav Petrov and Vasily Arkhipov* Eric Schlosser's book Command and Control, about nuclear near-misses* The 11-ton “Mother Of All Bombs” (MOAB) vs. the 9-megaton B53 thermonuclear warhead* Neil Halloran's YouTube video on deaths during and after a nuclear explosion* His later video discussing how he overstated nuclear winter effects* The “Nuke Map”, where you can see how much of a given city would be in the blast radius of a variety of different warheads* The two original 1983 nuclear winter papers in Science: the slightly more circumspect one; the one that mentions human extinction* Long Effective Altruism forum post by Michael Hinge on the evidence for and against nuclear winter effects* Even more detailed post on the same subject by Vasco Grilo* Three papers from three different teams on a regional nuclear exchange between India and Pakistan:* The Rutgers team's original paper in 2014* The follow-up by the Los Alamos team in 2018 (response from Rutgers; response from Los Alamos)* The follow-up by the Lawrence Livermore team in 2020* Carl Sagan's prediction of severe climate effects from Iraq's burning of the Kuwaiti oil wells in 1990/1991* Discussion of why that didn't happen* The extremely sceptical Naval Gazing blog post on nuclear winter* Paper from nuclear winter theorists accusing the US of genocide in Japan* Toby Ord's book The Precipice, on existential riskCreditsThe Studies Show is produced by Julian Mayers at Yada Yada Productions. I'm super psyched to welcome actor and creator Ned Donovan back to the show. Ned first appeared back in Episode 49, recorded at the height of the pandemic, and discussed the loss of his parents, a medical hiccup in his performing career, and growing up in Maine.   In this conversation, Ned catches us up on the last three years in his life and shares his journey in acting, production, and his personal life. He discusses his experiences with fertility challenges and the emotional rollercoaster of undergoing surgeries, IVF cycles, and the search for a sperm donor. Despite setbacks and obstacles, Ned remains resilient and determined to start a family. This conversation explores the emotional toll, financial struggles, and societal expectations surrounding fertility treatment. The couple shares their journey of failed IVF and IUIs, miscommunication and mistakes made by the medical industry, and the disparity in support and options for women. They discuss the impact on their relationship and the challenges of balancing personal success with their partner's struggles. The conversation highlights the importance of being present and supportive as a partner, getting tested for fertility issues, and finding humor in the dark moments. It also sheds light on the financial burden of fertility treatment and the ineptitude of the healthcare system. The conversation explores the challenges of salaries in the entertainment industry and the broader issue of capitalism. Takeaways Fertility challenges can be emotionally and physically draining, requiring perseverance and support. The IVF process can be complex and expensive, involving multiple procedures and tests. Having a supportive partner and a strong support system is crucial during fertility struggles. Exploring alternative options, such as sperm donation and adoption, can provide hope and new possibilities. Fertility treatment can take a significant emotional toll on both partners, and it is important to be present and supportive throughout the process. Miscommunication and mistakes made by the medical industry can exacerbate the already challenging journey of fertility treatment. Societal expectations of manhood and fertility can be deeply ingrained, and it is important to unpack and challenge these beliefs. Balancing personal success with a partner's struggles can be difficult, but open communication and empathy are key. Getting tested for fertility issues is important for both partners, as male infertility can also be a factor. Finding humor in the dark moments can help navigate the emotional challenges of fertility treatment. The financial burden of fertility treatment can be significant, and access to affordable options is limited. Many people in the entertainment industry struggle to make a living wage, even with multiple jobs. The current system of capitalism is seen as a nightmare that perpetuates inequality. There is a need for systemic change to address the issues of salaries and income inequality.

We get into that during our discussion, but we also talk about growing up with an addict parent, what he learned (or didn't learn) being brought up in lily-white Maine,  learning to understand and then use his privilege for good, and finding personal and professional catharsis after a series of personal tragedies left him reeling.

However, what you get to hear in this episode is truly an example of both the cast and the player characters puzzling out a truly complex story inside an emotional upheaval of everyone involved. It really showcases how wonderful our cast is, and the work by our incredible Dungeon Master Brian David Jenkins to weave a tale that can stump but still excite everyone involved. This episode comes about halfway through our second season which finds our party trapped within a Boris legionnaire fort that is being surrounded by a deadly wurm and inside there is a threat that no one can quite name or discover. Hi, this is Ned Donovan, producer, co-host, and editor of At the Table: A Play Reading Series, a podcast that produces new plays from emerging playwrights as audio dramas with Broadway and other professional stage actors. You're listening to an episode from our second season. We revived this show from an indefinite hiatus at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. We felt that at a time where theatre was shuttering worldwide It was important now more than ever to be producing new plays with wonderful actors and making sure that theatre continues to be produced even despite these trying times. We've picked this play for the audio verse showcase because Michael Kostroff, lead actor in the show is nominated, and we also felt that it's a perfect showcase of a simple story told beautifully. Actors Michael Kostroff and Sherri Edelen are in this two hander by Clare Bierman that allows you to really hear the gorgeous nature of theatre when everything is stripped away from the words and performed stunningly. We will be returning for a third season in the not too distant future. But in the meantime, please enjoy The Very Furious Kugel by Clare Biermann starring Michael Kostroff and Sherri Edelen. Thank you for listening. And please continue to support theatre, which is going through the hardest times that it has in recent memory. Support your local theaters, support your local artists, and everyone please be well, be safe, and be kind. What is work? It looks differently for everyone. We can work all day, but at the same time not work at all. Ned Donovan is a high-tech, fast thinking actor, fight choreographer, content creator, and producer who is always on the move and constantly learning new proficiencies. But when is it appropriate to commit to a project thinking we can handle it ourselves or choose to find someone else to help us solve the puzzle? Ned beautifully speaks about the grief he experienced and the lessons he learned after losing both of his parents in a short amount of time... all while being inspired by his mother who believed that life was not just about joining communities, but making them. A D&D AP That Sounds Like an Audio Drama: Ep. 142

Plot Points

Encounter Party is a slick piece of D&D entertainment so well-acted and so well-edited that it is more like audio drama than anything else. Our own Sarah Babe plays a minotaur on the podcast, and quite simply, if you enjoy Plot Points, you have to check out Encounter Party.  If you like Encounter Problem, check out Ned Donovan's other piece of white-hot media, a vampire musical web series, The Hunted: Encore. Yes, you read that right. Vampire. Musical. Web series.  Plot Points is going to try out a new feature: an Appendix N book club! Prof. Jason Carney is an expert in pulp fiction, and RPG superstar and Pathfinder author Clinton J. Boomer knows fantasy RPGs like the back of his hand. We gather these two phenoms to discuss authors that influenced D&D, starting with “The Return of the Sorcerer” by Clark Ashton Smith. Read it here in the next few weeks if you want to be ready for the episode!  Like Plot Points? Support it on Patreon at the $2 level, and you’ll get a sneak peek into Ben’s book about the sale of TSR to Wizards of the Coast! This chapter concerns TSR West, an effort by TSR to open an LA office devoted to producing comic books, an effort that failed rather impressively. It is the product of a dozen interviews with professionals from comics, gaming, and Hollywood, and as far as I can reckon, it is a tale entirely untold until now.   To let us know what you think about this episode, email us at plotpointsemail@gmail.com! Elon Musk gifted us analytics like Prometheus gifting fire, and as such we've determined that about 40 percent of our audience is American. So, Americans (and others) -- do you want to know about the British royal family? Well, now you can, in detail, as Riley (@raaleh), Milo (@Milo_Edwards), Hussein (@HKesvani),  and Ned Donovan (@Ned_Donovan) discuss the history of Britain's terrible ruling family. This is a good episode to listen to while your valet is relocating your bed to your friends' house. The Bluffocracy: who are the chancers who run Britain?

We often complain that our politicians are all bluffers who know very little about a lot. But is the very structure of our political institutions at fault? And is the bluffocracy taking over the civil service, too (00:50)? Speaking of bluffers, Theresa May is fudging her way through the Brexit negotiations, but can she survive after March 2019 (18:40)? And last, maybe all this politics has made you long for the good old days of monarchy. With Prince Charles's art collection on exhibit, we ask, what can be gleaned about our future king from his paintings (27:10)? With James Ball, Andrew Greenway, Ayesha Hazarika, Katy Balls, Will Tanner, Ned Donovan, and Roya Nikkhah. Presented by Lara Prendergast. Produced by Cindy Yu.

Skylines, the CityMetric podcast

“Can I come on Skylines and talk about the Victorians?” someone asked me the other week, and who am I to refuse an offer like that? So: this week’s guest is Ned Donovan, the foremost primogeniture nerd writing freelance in London today. He wanted to expound his theory that the great urban engineers of the Victorian era, like Joseph Bazalgette, would have distinctly mixed feelings about modern Britain – delighted that their work has endured, but baffled and a little irritated that it has had to. We do cover Bazalgette’s sewers, built in the aftermath of the Great Stink of 1858. But we ended up having a much broader conversation than I expected, taking in slum clearance, the history of social housing, the decline of noblesse oblige, and why it all means the modern Conservative party is stuffed. All subjects to warm the cockles of my heart.Skylines is the podcast from the New Statesman’s cities site, CityMetric. It’s hosted by Jonn Elledge.
