Today in Episode 179 - Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), as the LDS Mission Coach, I'm always looking for ways to support my listeners, whether you're preparing to serve a mission, currently serving, or a returned missionary. In this episode, I tackle the topic of FOMO - the fear of missing out. FOMO is something I've noticed many of my clients struggle with, especially around the holidays or major life events. When we're on a mission, it's easy to feel like we're missing out on family gatherings, trips, or even new pets at home. But I want to share that FOMO is a common human experience, and there are ways we can reframe our mindset to find joy and abundance in the present moment. I dive into the five key reasons we might experience FOMO - comparison, not being present, not liking where we are, being multi-passionate, and adding negative meaning. For each one, I provide practical solutions and mantras you can use to cultivate a mindset of gratitude and the "joy of missing out." Whether you're navigating the mission experience or any other life transition, I hope these insights empower you to create the fulfilling life you desire. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I know this work will help LDS missionaries around the world and it would mean so much to me if you did. Until next week my friends. Join Neil and Sam as they dive deep into Bitcoin, with Sam's seven years of experience bringing valuable insights and practical takeaways for entrepreneurs and forward-thinking individuals. Sam breaks down key concepts, while Neil asks the critical questions, making this essential listening for anyone curious about Bitcoin's role in the future of financeKey Takeaways from Neil and Sam:1. Bitcoin is The Ultimate Savings AccountBitcoin's decentralized system allows global transactions without banks, offering financial access and cost savings. With a capped supply of 21 million coins, it acts as an inflation hedge, providing transparency, security, and financial independence amid rising national debts.2. Bitcoin is the Ultimate Asset. Avoid AltcoinsAltcoins are volatile and risky, better for speculation than long-term investment.Bitcoin's proven halving cycle makes it the safest asset with consistent long-term growth.Prioritize holding Bitcoin over investing in unpredictable altcoins.3. The New Investment Strategy: Moving from Real Estate to BitcoinBitcoin offers real estate benefits without taxes, maintenance, or seizure risks.Wealthy individuals are shifting to Bitcoin, which has shown consistent profitability and is a superior inflation hedge.4. Timing the Market vs. Time in the Market: The Long-Term StrategyDespite its volatility, Bitcoin's long-term trend is upward due to its limited supply and increasing demand.Adopting a "Hold On for Dear Life" approach and practicing Dollar-Cost Averaging can maximize returns by emphasizing long-term growth over market timing.5. Navigating the Risks and Opportunities of BitcoinBe aware of emotional triggers like Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) and stay informed about regulations to manage risks. With only 21 million Bitcoins available, holding some is crucial for future security, as the risk of holding none outweighs Bitcoin's volatility.6. Best SourcesTo avoid misinformation and scams, rely on reputable sources like InvestAnswers on YouTube and Patreon, and Fred Krueger on X.Many platforms promote risky alternative cryptocurrencies or scams, so prioritize well-researched Bitcoin information. "This has to be money that you intend to invest, and that you're not going to be looking to extract to pay next week's or next month's rent." — Neil Tyra"When the government is spending more and more money and inflation is growing, you don't want to be holding on to dollars; you want to have hard assets like Bitcoin, real estate, and stocks." — Sam Mollaei

Let's talk about putting FOMO in check – Before Truly Missing Out on Our Lives Sometimes we can be so busy because of the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) that we actually miss out on the very present that we claim to value the most. Or in our striving for something in the future we may discount the value and benefit in our present. Let's put our FOMO in check. Let's figure out what matters to us and make decisions accordingly. When we take time to figure out what really matters to us, we allow ourselves to be in the best position to make the right choices for ourselves at the time. Taking time to establish priorities, to set boundaries for how we use our time and engage, and to benefit and enhance situations through delegation, are just a few important ways for us to ensure we make time for what matters. Making a plan that we can follow with intention creates a good framework of reference for us to follow and remain accountable to the things that matter for us. So let's accept the challenge of Making Time for What matters and keep the indiscriminate choices associated with the FOMO at bay. I welcome Asa Whillock, the Vice President and General Manager of Machine Learning at Alteryx, to delve into the transformative world of generative AI and its real-world impact on businesses. Asa, an acclaimed AI and machine learning expert, brings to light the critical gap between the anticipated benefits of generative AI and its practical implications in the business environment. Our discussion pivots around a compelling revelation: that the success of AI in businesses is not merely about its implementation but hinges on individuals' ability to utilize and trust AI technologies. Asa argues that without a profound understanding and confidence in how AI operates, businesses are unlikely to reap the expected benefits. This issue is underscored by Alteryx's recent AI Pulse survey, which reveals a surprising statistic: although 40% of businesses have adopted AI, a majority still rank their AI maturity at the preliminary stages of exploration or experimentation. Throughout our conversation, Asa shares insights on the current state of AI in businesses, highlighting the trend of AI adoption driven more by a Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) rather than strategic business intelligence. We examine the intriguing findings from Alteryx's research, noting that only 18% of businesses classify their AI maturity as 'optimizing' or 'innovating'. This episode is a treasure trove for those interested in the intersection of AI and business efficiency. We discuss how organizations can effectively implement and govern AI, ensuring that it aligns with their business strategies and ethical standards. Key topics include the challenges of AI adoption, the misconceptions surrounding AI's impact on employment, and the importance of regulatory compliance and ethical governance in building trust in AI systems. Asa also sheds light on the future trends in AI for 2024, emphasizing a shift from hype to practical value and ROI of AI investments. We explore how breaking down data silos can enable more insightful cross-functional analysis, potentially revolutionizing decision-making in businesses. Join me in this compelling dialogue with Asa Whillock as we unravel the complexities of AI in the business world, offering insights that are both thought-provoking and actionable.

The absence of effective deterrents, such as appropriate punishment, can lead to a decline in individual responsibility and social cohesion.Shift in VC investment behavior: There's a strong trend towards investing in AI-related companies. Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) has gripped the VC community, driving many to invest in AI startups to avoid being left behind. This AI frenzy can lead to both promising innovations and potential investment bubbles.Opportunity and awareness gap: While many acknowledge the potential of AI, a substantial number of individuals, including smart and established players, remain passive or ignorant about the ongoing technological revolution. The Big Quote: "We're at the very front end of AI, and it reminds me of [an] old expression . . . there's three kinds of people. There's the people in the parade, and there's the people who watch the parade, and there's the people who said, 'Oh, is there a parade?' And there's a stunning number of people who don't even know there's a parade right now . . . that's where the opportunity is."
In today's episode, we discuss disciplined investing, mastering your emotions, and thriving in the upward momentum of the market. We kick things off by analyzing the performances of the S&P 500 and NASDAQ this year, then discuss "window dressing". Ever heard of it? We're shedding light on this practice where portfolio managers adjust their holdings quarterly, and we're exploring the role of market psychology. Be cautious during September – a historically bumpy period for the market. But hold on, it's Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) time! We're getting into the nitty-gritty of the fear that surfaces when the market is on fire. Our advice? Don't let it sway your investment decisions. Patience and precision are key. We're here for the long haul, prepared for whatever twists and turns the market brings. Here's to wise investing, Brett Pattison and Brian Hunsaker
When I first sober everything reminded me of everything I was missing out on. Songs on the radio, posts on social media, and it seemed like every commercial on TV showed people living their best life with a Coors light in their hand.“I am never going to have fun again” is the thought that kept going through my mind. I knew I couldn't drink again and I had no desire to go back to that old way of life. I simply resigned to the fact that my destiny was going to be a boring, sober, life. But that is not the life I live today. My life has more fun and excitement in it than I ever did drinking. But how did I go from accepting my fate of a boring sober life to a life filled with fun, adventure, and fulfillment?Well, that is what we are going to talk about in this episode.

Michael Donahue, who has spent 60 years in the advertising business including leadership roles at the ANA (Association of National Advertisers) and the 4A's (American Association of Advertising Agencies) reminds us of a) the importance of continuous learning and curiosity, b) why it is never too late to pioneer and innovate (Michael led the 4A's drive into digital over two decades ago when he was at "retirement age"), and c) the need to focus on loyal users and the next generation and, finally, how we should be more worried about the Fear of Finding Out (FOFO) versus the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). The fear of missing out, or FOMO, refers to the feeling or perception that others are having more fun, living better lives, or experiencing better things than you. It involves a deep sense of envy and affects self-esteem. On today's episode, Shannon & Jessica will dive into the negative affects of FOMO and how to avoid it.
Most of us know the feeling. Something's going on and you're missing it. It's called FOMO – Fear of Missing Out – and it's the topic of this episode of “All the F Words.” FOMO is real and it has a lot to do with insecurity and self-esteem. Social media absolutely amplifies the refrain. As the baby of her family, Joanne was forever feeling left out of the loop, and that feeling has led to a lifetime of overscheduling. In the next hour, I might miss out on the greatest thing that could happen to me. Or maybe that's just the FOMO talking. FOMO, the fear of missing out, has infiltrated the zeitgeist in the past decade. What does the obsession with FOMO tell us about our desire to connect with others in an age of consumer capitalism and social media? In episode 70, Ellie and David consider the fear of missing out in light of Nietzsche's ressentiment, Freud's psychoanalysis of Little Hans, and how FOMO has changed due to COVID. They consider whether the movement toward JOMO, or the joy of missing out, provides a viable solution to the fear.Svend Brinkmann, The Joy of Missing Out: The Art of Self-Restraint in an Age of Excess PaperbackSigmund Freud, Obsessions and PhobiasSigmund Freud, “Analysis of a Phobia in a Five-Year-Old Boy”Mayank Gupta and Aditya Sharma, “Fear of missing out: A brief overview of origin, theoretical underpinnings and relationship with mental health”Herman Melville, “Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street”Mark Morford, “Oh My God You are So Missing Out”Friedrich Nietzsche, On the Genealogy of MoralsJenny Odell, How to Do NothingJames A. Countdown clocks, limited seating, only X items left in stock ... does scarcity marketing work for you? If so, why? Scarcity marketing and the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is a phenomenon that can be applied to all forms of marketing - especially digital. Mindy Weinstein, Ph.D., author of The Power of Scarcity, joins me on the SEJShow to talk more about the concept - and how it can help you drive results. Marketing is so much psychology; it doesn't matter if you're doing SEO, paid search, or social. You're trying to reach a person. I feel like it's a lot harder than before because it's a matter of not just reaching them but cutting through the noise and then using the right words. –Mindy Weinstein,1:51 Because of scarcity, there is excitement and there is loyalty. Think of Nike and some of these big companies that people watch for the drops. It goes beyond just creating quick revenue, as I need sales right now, which is what most of us associate with scarcity. –Mindy Weinstein, 29:02 You're bringing their focus, especially for people all over the place, and you're giving them the direction to tell them what to do, which many audiences actually crave. They don't necessarily want to make that decision, and they need you to guide them to make the decision or to make the sale. I think that's something that can be lost in digital marketing. –Loren Baker, 19:20 [00:00] - Mindy's background. [05:17] - What is scarcity marketing? [06:00] - Four types of scarcity. [10:14] - How to take scarcity marketing from the traditional to the digital side. [16:01] - Examples of using scarcity marketing in websites. [20:20] - Examples for service-based businesses. [25:19] - How McDonald's used scarcity marketing. [32:27] - Ways search marketers can incorporate scarcity marketing into campaigns. Resources Mentioned: The Power Of Scarcity Book - http://powerofscarcity.com Market MindShift - https://www.marketmindshift.com/ It's multi-layered. It's more than just thinking buy now, or miss out, or you have only one day left. There's so much to it, it doesn't always work and it only works for specific audiences depending on the type of discourse you're using. –Mindy Weinstein, 2:39 Just telling you have these products as best sellers or most popular on your website helps someone as they're searching on your website. –Mindy Weinstein, 7:50 You want to have the regular price because it elicits a feeling of loss aversion that we don't want. –Mindy Weinstein, 33:54 For more content like this, subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/searchenginejournal Are you looking to keep up with current and effective digital marketing today? Why the Fear of Being Left Out (FOMO) Is So Dangerous for You and Your Projects This week, Ricardo talks about FOMO, or "Fear of missing out," which is the anxiety we have when we don't feel included in a specific scenario, causing us to feel unmotivated and have low self-esteem. New technologies, cryptocurrencies, the metaverse, and artificial intelligence are just examples that can make us feel out of date and like we are falling behind. The fear of missing out (FOMO) is a normal reaction to the perception that others have some information, knowledge, or relationship that we lack. What is not normal is the intensity of what we are facing right now. Look especially at social media. We may learn about innovative technology or a new approach to project management as we work on the project. The challenge is the desire we usually have to invest in everything new that comes out, and this behavior prevents us from focusing on project results. Our judgment is impaired, and as a result, we make choices that may not be optimal. One way out might be another acronym, JOMO, or "Joy of Missing out," which explains that letting something new slip by can be suitable for the project, however counterintuitive. We need to focus on what needs to be done. Suppose we always try to use the best technologies and methods. In that case, we can fail to deliver the expected primary results. In addition to destroying team morale, generating an unusual level of anxiety and triggering what we see as the "Great Resignation." Listen to this week's #5minpodcast to learn more.
Do you fall victim to FOMO? Ever scroll through social media and think "I wish I was there" or "I'm going to do that next?" You might be experiencing FOMO! Patty and the crew discuss.

From “the next google” stocks, to penny stocks, dot.com stocks, meme stocks, or even crypto, there's typically both social pressure applied to investors to not miss out on the next big thing, but also their own internal feelings of not wanting to “miss” out. This “Fear of Missing Out” or FOMO as it's referred to, typically builds as a bull market is extended and certain investments possibly grow faster than their underlying value would dictate. In this episode, Josh and Jay discuss both fear of missing out, and discuss the difference between “gambling” versus utilizing a diversified, purposely constructed diversified portfolio. The hosts even get to relieve a little bit of the dot.com bubble, as both had just graduated college as that era was heating up. Been burned by the market recently? It's easy to let fear control you with the strong emotions it invokes. But allowing our emotions to control us is what causes us more pain & struggle than examining why we feel this way & what we should do to push through. I'm reviewing 7 of the biggest fears that hold us back & what we should about it.Show Notes:If I were to ask myself what scares me most, it would be the uncertainty of the future.I'm a planner & I like to have an idea of what's going to happen or just plan it out myself. It's pretty simple for me. But what feels simple to me is actually difficult in a world where you never know what is going to happen. In general, I have a problem with fear. And it feels like I pick up a new fear every single week because I'm trying harder to challenge myself & step out of my comfort zone. Which is a good thing! We are supposed to be out there pushing boundaries & making ourselves better by engaging in new experiences & going through mistakes & failures. Things I talk about ALL THE TIME with you all. But talking about, teaching about & coaching you all through doesn't make it any easier to deal with myself & me helping you through isn't going to make the process any easier for you, but it does give you tips on how best to manage it & make it to the other side.I try to approach most of my fears by asking myself, “What's the worst that could happen?” This exercise doesn't always help because I start to believe the worst-case scenarios I come up with & really just scare myself even more. But when it does work, it can boost my confidence a bit & shave the fear down a little bit. I have found that understanding the circumstance or the experience I have to go through a bit more does help to reduce my fear. Today I want to answer the question, “What Scares You the Most,” with 7 fears that hold us back the most in life & what we can do to face those fears:Uncertainty (anxiety is crippling, but worrying about the future will change nothing or manifest anything good)Failure (best learning lessons & no one's perfect)Rejection (this is nice because it gives you an end/final answer, provides direction or need to challenge yourself)Being Judged By Others (people will judge no matter what because it gives them a break from judging themselves)Missing Out (FOMO is a time-waster/look into why you feel this way: inadequacy, jealousy?)Change (we all need growth)Success (leads to procrastination & lack of action, holds you back indefinitely)Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo.Have any questions, comments or feedback? The fear of missing out can influence an emotional decision to even the most successful people in the world. There is an abundance of opportunities down the road. It's okay that passed. The present moment is the key to liberation. Why sacrifice anxiety of the future or feeling regretful in the past so you can enjoy this moment? If you are anxious, you are living in the future, if you are depressed, you're living in the past, and if you're happy, you're living in the present. What you focus on grows. Every opportunity that I get and turn down, the opportunity that I know will grow me. There is a cost to that. Accept that this might really take off, but I am not going to be part of it. Fear of missing out is a natural thing, but there are ways to overcome it.
