Just in time for spooky season, Jaclyn speaks to writer/producer David Kirschner (Hocus Pocus, Child's Play) about kindness in his life, his fascination with family & fantasy stories, and how the kindness of others propelled his career.David Kirschner's imagination has spawned a body of work that has evoked laughter, fear, suspense, and heartfelt emotion for over 40 years. It was 1975 when the legendary Neil Diamond laid eyes on 19-year-old David's illustrations. From here, David would photograph, and design twenty-two album covers, including the Grammy-nominated for design, The Jazz Singer. Soon after, David's talents were enlisted by famed creator, Jim Henson, for work on Sesame Street and The Muppets. Next, David harkened the voice of his creative entrepreneurial spirit, creating a fantasy garden world, Rose-Petal Place. Inspired by his daughters, Rose-Petal Place quickly blossomed into a book series, toys, apparel, television specials, and a float in the Macys Day Parade. This success brought David to the attention of Steven Spielberg. Backed by Steven's company, David created and produced the Oscar-nominated and two-time Grammy-winning, An American Tail, which spawned a theatrical sequel, and television series. It wouldn't be long before David struck again, but this time it was the fear of his sister's dolls that would soon become the horror icon, Chucky, in Child's Play. Chucky has prospered in 7 films, and the Chucky VT series is in its third year with an average score of 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. David ran Hanna Barbera Studios as President and Chairman for four years, where he led the resurgence of the venerable animation house. During his reign, David co-wrote and produced the two-time Emmy nominated live action, The Dreamer of Oz, with legendary writer, Richard Matheson, and produced the live-action feature The Flintstones. David's book, The Pagemaster was translated into fourteen languages around the world and became a film starring Macaulay Culkin. David produced for Disney, based on his story, the film Hocus Pocus and Hocus Pocus 2, Hocus Pocus 3 is in pre-production.His other projects include; Frailty, Cats Don't Dance, animated feature Titan A.E, Secondhand Lions, Miss Potter, and Martian Child, David also collaborated with Ron Howard to produce Curious George. He continues today as Executive Producer on the multi-Emmy-winning Curious George PBS daytime series. Ron Howard has been signed to direct a live-action Curious George, that David will produce with Imagine Entertainment. David has continued to honor his commitment to children and society with dedicated positions, Ambassador to The University of Southern California School of Cinema, Trustee of the Board of Crossroads School, Board of Directors for Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, and Board Member of The Center for Early Education. This podcast is one of the many ways we live out our organization's mission to educate and inspire people to choose kindness. One of them was Cats Don't Dance, a movie that dares to lie directly to your face in the title. The other was Bad Cat, a movie that is so aptly named that I had to put a trigger warning into the episode. Journey back with us to 1939 Hollywood, as we unwrap the profound themes of the lesser-known animated movie, Cats Don't Dance. We promise you'll never see this movie the same way again! We shed light on the protagonist Danny's relentless pursuit of stardom amid societal challenges. We dissect the animated characters, with a special spotlight on the complex formation of Darla Dimple's character against the backdrop of Shirley Temple's real-life experiences. We further delve into the allegorical subtext within the movie, nudging towards the racial struggles of the era. We wrap our approach with the recurring motif of prejudice and inclusion in the movie, exploring it from a Christian perspective. Cat's may not dance in this movie, but they sure put on a show and gives us some food for thought!Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Cats Don't Like Love and Affection 10/27/23
(Spoiler Section Length - 6min 6sec) A lot of animated movies copy Disney and Pixar. Those two studios have had a massive influence on the animation medium and in particular what commercial films released in the US look and feel like. But every now and then you get a movie that tries something new, tries to break the mold in interesting ways, and sometimes, as in the case of Into the Spider-Verse, that experimentation results in both critical and financial success. Other times, like with this film, it does not. Cats Don't Dance swings hard with stylistic influence ranging from classic hollywood, Looney Tunes and even Gene Kelly, but it was ultimately a flop in theatres. That said, does it hold up as an entertaining film anyway? Listen to find out! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/howsitholdup/support

We are wrapping up a month full of musicals with one that is a little harder to find. Cats Don't Dance is an original movie musical that changed course halfway through development and the movie we have now is one that TJ flocked to as a kid. But is it good? Why hasn't anyone heard of this movie? Natalie Cole sings in it! Isn't that enough? For most people, most likely not. But Randy Newman wrote the songs! That should have done SOMETHING for people! Is this movie the cat's pajamas? Or is it just a stray that will never find a home? Find out in this episode! Leave us a voice message by going to https://anchor.fm/moonstreet Questions or Comments? It's time to put on your dancing shoes and join us in exploring a lesser cartoon called Cats Don't Dance (1997). A heartwarming tale about what happens when you follow your big dreams and believe in yourself, this movie has all the makings of an animated classic... If only it had been promoted by Warner Bros! Complete with talking animal characters and one unhinged little girl, it's baffling how well this film flew under the radar. As we dive into the world of felines who twirl and sing, we have to ask is this movie an overlooked slice of genius? Or do we actually prefer it when cats only say meow? Let's find out together!

TAG Interview with Randy MyersFind all TAG Interviews on the TAG website at this link Director and animator Randy Myers is nothing if not persistent. When he got turned down by Cal Arts for a spot in their animation program, he applied a second time. When the school declined to accept him a second time, Mr. Myers started taking art classes in earnest, redid his portfolio, and finally found success ... But Randy Myers was a young man in a hurry. "It was the early nineties," he says, "and there was a demand for animation artists. And I had loans of pay off, so after two years I left and went to work full time in animation. ..." It was a heady time. Disney Feature Animation was on a roll with a string of hits, and every major entertainment company wanted to be in the animated feature business. Randy went to work for Turner Feature Animation, where he worked his way up to animator on Cats Don't Dance, then moved over to the Warner Bros. feature studio where he animated on Quest For Camelot and Brad Bird's Iron Giant in rapid succession. Randy speaks of these things and more in the first of a two-part TAG interview.
