This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to analyze a trio of “cult classics” from the actor/director pairing of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter. Starting with 1981's Escape From New York starring Mr. Russell, Donald Pleasance, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, Isaac Hayes and Season Hubley, on to 1982's The Thing starring Russell, Donald Moffat, Keith David, Richard Dysart, David Clennon, T.K, Carter, Richard Masur, Charles Hallahan and Wilford Brimley, And finally 1986's Big Trouble in Little China starring Russell, Dennis Dun, Kim Cattrall, James Hong, Donald Li, Kate Burton, Suzee Pai and Victor Wong, My two guests are the only pair who would be up for such a comprehensive cinematic showdown : Lit major and lil' Sis Roseanne Caputi and Actor Funnyman Photobug, Alex Robertson. Before we run the gauntlet, the synopses:  In Escape From New Yorkex soldier and current convict Snake Plisskin is forced under the threat of death by government agent Hauk to rescue the President of the United States after a group of insurgents cause Air Force One to crash in New York city which by 1997 has become a walled off maximum security prison.  The Thing  catalogues the paranoia, fear and sheer horror  that ensues when a shape-shifting alien invades an American Antarctic Research Facility.   Big Trouble in Little China follows the mystic, martial-arts laden misadventures of blowhard truck driver Jack Burton, who, on a routine stop in San Francisco's Chinatown wins a bet over   his buddy Wang Chi. In order to collect his money, Jack follows Wang to the airport to meet Wang's beautiful green-eyed betrothed bride Miao Yin who is summarily kidnapped by the evil ancient supernatural gang Lord David Lo Pan. Lo Pan, for his part, inhabits a broken down and decrepit old body and can only move as a spirit in his young and powerful form. In order to attain full strength and fleshly form, Lo Pan  needs Wang's  green-eyed bride to break his century old curse. With the help of lawyer Gracie Law and a troupe of warriors led by magical Egg Shen, Jack and Wang charge into David Lo Pan's compound to stage a daring rescue. Which film rates the highest?Find out!

We've hinted at it all season long, but in our Season 5 finale, we're going out strong with a film that is absolutely perfect; it's John Carpenter's The Thing from 1982. A tale of paranoia, toxic masculinity, and great facial hair that just feels timeless. Is it Carpenter's best movie? Was Childs assimilated? What happened to Nauls? How many times can we say the words "the Thing" in one episode? We have answers to all of these questions and more in this jam packed episode. Plus, our pitch for a Saturday morning cartoon based on The Thing, remaking this film with the cast of Mean Girls, the wild life of Wilford Brimley, and more are all points of discussion in our final send off of the year before our long hibernation in the arctic.Happy holidays!  "There is still cellular activity in these burned remains. They're not dead yet!" In this week's episode, we explore the 1982 science-fiction horror film THE THING.  We bring back writer/director/filmmaker Daniel Goad as we follow a research team in Antarctica that is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of it's victims. Macready (Kurt Russell) is set on the arduous task of determining who from his crew has been assimilated by The Thing and who remains human.  The team members' (Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon, and Keith David to name some) paranoia threatens to tear them apart before The Thing can.   Join Cameron and Daniel talk about the theatrical version AND the rarely seen television version of the film.  Listen in to hear some of the differences and find out which version was liked better!   Haven't heard one of our episodes yet?  Let Clark explain what it's like:   "I dunno what the hell's in there, but it's weird and pissed off, whatever it is".   Check it out!

Actor David Clennon sat down to speak with us about an interesting film called Welcome to the Men's Group. Clennon has seen his fair share of things as an actor, from Peter Sellers's last great role, to an intergalactic shape-shifting alien, but what about complexity of a man's psyche when he sequestered away with other men? Welcome to the Men's Group is a bit of an affirmation for men who find themselves stuck between the various social movements of the present, and the expectations set by traditional American values. The film, directed by Man Men's Joseph Culp, was quite an unexpected viewing venture for yours truly. When most cinematic representations of men imagine us as either dolts or heroes, it is easy to forget that many of us harbor a lot of hidden emotions, fears, desires, dreams, and pain. This film explores how those things affect males from various walks of life. Synopsis: Joseph Culp and Scott Ben-Yashar bring you a film that explores what happens in a men’s group when people are no longer willing to hide behind social conventions. Welcome to the Men’s Group is a comedy-drama that explores real-life issues that affect everyone (not just men). The modern male is under pressure like never before, and WTTMG explores how men deal, or don’t deal, with these issues, and how it effects their lives and families.

This week on the Full Cast And Crew Podcast we cruise the rain-slicked early 90's NYC streets and track down Paul Schrader's (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, American Gigolo) 1992 film 'Light Sleeper'. Fittingly, we're releasing this one at 2:43am on a Thursday morning, with our ears still ringing from the sound system at Area and our noses numbed with bad decisions. A Manhattan drug dealer with a wealthy clientele, John LeTour (Willem Dafoe) reevaluates both his trade and his life after discovering that his supplier, Ann (Susan Sarandon), is planning on quitting the business. When John runs into his old flame Marianne (Dana Delany), he sees reconnecting with her as a way to change for the better, but she is reluctant to rekindle the romance. Complicating John's life further is a series of drug-related murders that has the police pegging him as a suspect. Schrader called 'Light Sleeper' the last of his "Man In A Room' movies, along with Taxi Driver and American Gigolo; movies about isolated, alienated men occupying their single-room apartments and going slowly crazy with the dawning awareness of the dissatisfaction and ennui they are feeling.  Despite that wrist-slitting description, 'Light Sleeper' features some pitch-perfect performances from Willem Dafoe, Sarandon, David Clennon, Victor Garber, Delaney, Mary Beth Hurt, Jane Adams, a young Sam Rockwell, and David Spade as "theological cokehead".   'Light Sleeper' is like transporting yourself back to NYC in the late 80's and early 90's.  The restaurants, the coke, the bullshit clothes.  But all that is viewed, almost in real time, with an acerbic, probing eye that lets no one off the hook.  Featuring a soundtrack from The Call's Michael Been (1983's MTV-staple 'The Walls Came Down'), 'Light Sleeper' might not be a movie you're familiar with unless you came of age in the movie theaters of the 80's and 90's, but it's a perfect period piece and prescient about the downfalls and lies at the center of a life among "the beautiful people", with a sense of possible redemption at the end in the most unexpected of places. Prior to a television landscape that favors realism over idyllic life, where major characters face the risk of "being killed off," and daily life is portrayed somewhat accurately, thirtysomething did all that and more. The show that was an early experiment that quickly became a phenomenon, rewriting the rules for dramatic series in more ways than one. Helmed by creators Edward Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, thirtysomething not only drew viewers into the lives of its characters and tested the boundaries of conventional storytelling, it thrived with a multi-hyphenate cast, many of whom stepped into the role of director during the series run -- then stayed there for the next 30 years. ATX reunites these dynamic creatives as they look back at the series that re-wrote the book on TV dramas, and paved the way for a new direction in their careers.Episode Guests: Marshall Herskovitz, Edward Zwick, Timothy Busfield, Melanie Mayron, Peter Horton, David Clennon, Polly DraperModerator: Bill Keith (Entertainment Weekly)ATX Season 8 | June 6-9, 2019 | atxfestival.comWHERE TO FIND USFOLLOW us at @ATXFestival on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and let us know your thoughts on this episode (or any episode!) using #TheTVCampfire!WATCH full panels and Q&As from past seasons of ATX at atvxp.com and on our YouTube channel.BUY A BADGE at atxfestival.com and join us next June for ATX Season 8!-----Get 20% off your new favorite pair of jeans @ DSTLD.com with promo code: TVCAMPFIRE

All the actors are stuck in traffic coming back from the beach or standing in long lines at the airport while we remain cool, calm and collected for another dip into the archives. This time we're going back to the Gulf War...the first Gulf War. At the time, I was one of the writers of thirtysomething and I took the opportunity to write about the disturbing trend toward lockstep patriotism the first Bush administration was pushing down our throats at the time.thirtysomething was a series about the lives of two friends who worked in an advertising agency. In an episode I called A Stop at Willoughby, in an unsubtle tribute to Rod Serling, Michael Steadman is at odds with agency head Miles Drentell over a client's demand to fire an actor from an endorsement contract because of his temerity to appear at an anti-war rally. It was a way for me to articulate the very queasy feeling I was getting about the right-wing shift the country was experiencing. At the time, we thought it couldn't get any worse. Yikes.I'd like to say the episode now feels like a quaint artifact of another period in American history, something we've all gotten over. But I realize this scene is more relevant now than it was when it was first broadcast on May 14, 1991.
