Our hosts reveal a rare moment of cross-party solidarity, where even New Democratic and Conservative voices grudgingly acknowledge Trudeau's strategic tariff negotiations.

This week Robert and Jazmin talked about the Democrats electing three new leaders in the House and delivered a final word of analysis on the 2024 election.
American voters have elected a President with broadly, overtly authoritarian aims. It's hardly the first time that the democratic process has brought an anti-democratic leader to power. The political scientists Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt, who both teach at Harvard, assert that we shouldn't be shocked by the Presidential result. “It's not up to voters to defend a democracy,” Levitsky says. “That's asking far, far too much of voters, to cast their ballot on the basis of some set of abstract principles or procedures.” He adds, “With the exception of a handful of cases, voters never, ever—in any society, in any culture—prioritize democracy over all else. Individual voters worry about much more mundane things, as is their right. It is up to élites and institutions to protect democracy—not voters.” Levitsky and Ziblatt published “How Democracies Die” during Donald Trump's first Administration, but they argue that what's ailing our democracy runs much deeper—and that it didn't start with Trump. “We're the only advanced, old, rich democracy that has faced the level of democratic backsliding that we've experienced. . . . So we need to kind of step back and say, ‘What has gone wrong here?' If we don't ask those kinds of hard questions, we're going to continue to be in this roiling crisis,” Ziblatt says.

SERIES 3 EPISODE 68: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:00) SPECIAL COMMENT: If you're wondering who's the boss here it ain't Trump. Putin refused to call him first and instead had Russian State Television "celebrate" his becoming the 21st Century Grover Cleveland by showing nude photos of Melania. Russian TV - which has figured out Trump is a lame duck - also reported Nikki Haley and Mike Pompeo would not be in the new administration long before Trump announced it. Putin also seems to have soured on RFK Jr, leaving Sideshow Bobby to aspire only to becoming Secretary of Masturbation. MEANWHILE, NO, THE ELECTION WAS NOT STOLEN - not in the sense you're thinking. It WAS stolen in the sense that the fascists and the anti-democracy billionaires have been running a series of illicit, hidden, disguised pro-Republican advertisements 24/7/365, for at least thirty years. They have been bombarding the underachievers of this nation, the incels, the morons, the idiots, the bros, and now the social media addicts of America, with a series of easy-to-digest, sweet-tasting conspiracy theories on a thousand streaming networks and podcasts and the Democrats have...MSNBC. The Left not only doesn't compete in the new Marketplace of Ideas it doesn't know where the shops are. It has to change this or you can forget '26 and '28 as well. On the other hand, this circular firing squad? Utterly ludicrous. It looks like Kamala Harris will have ultimately lost by 1.5% which would make Trump's the fifth SMALLEST popular vote win all time. You do not burn it all down after that. You rebuild. B-BLOCK (32:15) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Corey Lewandowski and Chris LaCivita show us what winning means: you get to try to kill your rival on the winning team. Finally we figure out what's really behind the deportation scam: the companies that will make billions building the private prisons to turn into concentration camps for deportees. Nevermind the future of NATO. Will its members ever trust us with intel again? And the Dallas Cowboys honor founding coach Tom Landry on Veterans' Day by...misspelling his name. But it'll all come out in the wash. C-BLOCK (40:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: With only 7% of the city believing he didn't commit a crime, New York Mayor Eric Adams has reached out to...Trump. The Massachusetts congressman has the New Democratic rallying cry: Transphobia! And the White House "correspondent" so stupid she publicly accused the Democrats of trying to fix the Kari Lake/Ruben Gallego race so they can "steal" Congress. Except Lake and Gallego were running for the Senate! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In the wake of the Democratic National Convention, Nick and Goldy take a close look at how middle-out economics has become the new center of the Democratic Party's economic policies, championing a new era of economic thinking that puts workers, families and taking on corporate power at the center, and breaking away from decades of top-down, trickle-down approaches. With echoes of President Joe Biden's—and now former President Bill Clinton's—call to build the economy from the bottom up and the middle out, Vice President Harris is seizing the middle-out mantle by declaring that building the middle class will be a defining goal of her presidency because in her words, “When our middle class is strong, America is strong.” Join us as we discuss how invigorating it was to see the Democratic Party coalescing around the idea that their economic policies should benefit the vast majority of working people in order to grow the economy. Is it even possible to succeed in politics without being nasty? Thomas Lukaszuk and Brian Mason locked horns at the Alberta Legislature for years. In one well-publicized exchange, after Mason described the PC deputy premier as a "decorative hood ornament" in Premier Alison Redford's government, Lukaszuk suggested the NDP leader was more like the "Legislature's tail pipe". Despite significant ideological differences, the two always shared a friendship outside the political arena. Is such a relationship even realistic anymore? 4:20 | Lukaszuk and Mason reunite on Real Talk to discuss the past, present, and future of Alberta politics. EPISODE 105: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: The Taliban Caucus lights the Republican Party and the House of Representatives on fire, while on his first day, the New Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries perfectly whips his members to do literally do nothing more than bring their popcorn and watch everybody from Gaetz to McCarthy burn, baby, burn. It was a beautiful thing, and it left the full range of fascists from Tucker Carlson to Rep. Byron Donalds having to cobble together the nonsensical sophistry that their self-defenestration was actually democracy in action. If Jeffries can manage to keep the Democrats from reverting to their natural desire to do ill-timed good on behalf of the institution rather than let the Republicans shoot themselves again today, he will have won the 118th Congress no matter which Liz Truss the GOP eventually settles on in place of the wounded McCarthy. B-Block (15:15) SPECIAL COMMENT No. 2: There is the tragedy of Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills, and then there is the disgusting reality that the National Football League is now trying to gaslight us. OF COURSE the league intended to resume Monday night's game even after the stricken player fell. And now the NFL has lied about it and sleazily blamed Joe Buck, Suzy Kolber and all of ESPN, to cover up its own insensitivity and callousness. This is, of course, the history of the NFL, which did the wrong thing after JFK was assassinated, and after Mayor George Moscone and Councilman Harvey Milk were assassinated hours before a Monday Night Football game in San Francisco, and after it was told flights could not be guaranteed to get its players and media to games the weekend after 9/11. But this lie makes the Hamlin nightmare even worse - as does the rank exploitation of it by the anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists, who spit on the memories of Chuck Hughes and J.V. Cain and Hank Gathers and so many athletes who died on the field, from cardiac distress. We discuss the growing desire within the Republican party establishment to move away from Donald Trump toward someone like Governor Ron DeSantis. It's like we have returned to 2015/early 2016 when the "Never Trump" movement within the GOP was prominent, but now things have escalated, and even if the Trump cat is able to be put into the bag so to speak, the complete takeover of the American Conservative movement by the parties responsible for Trump becoming President (both domestic and foreign) is something that is not going away. We also discuss the new breed of Democratic party leadership who appear to be taking over from Nancy Pelosi, James Clyburn, and Steny Hoyer, and if this is another political example of Meet The New Boss, Same as the Old Boss. We close by discussing prominent Evangelical Zionist Michael Evans expressing buyer's remorse over Trump while basically expressing a refusal to support another Presidential run, and what this might mean. support us-https://www.patreon.com/Theantedote Show Links-https://www.patreon.com/posts/75033364?pr=true --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-antedote/support

Many of the world's most successful businesses began as someone's good idea. But the path from startup to conventional financial success typically involves going public, prioritizing shareholders' interests, and ultimately selling to a giant conglomerate whose intentions are far from the original mission of the business's founders. In this episode, Laura interviews guests who say this conventional path of success is desperately in need of an overhaul. Why must new and innovative ideas come to market through old and undemocratic platforms? What if rather than selling out, successful businesses became community assets that put ownership and governance in the hands of workers and even consumers? Could a startup become a means of building community wealth, economic justice, and accountability over our technology? Our guests explain how. Welcome back! This is a quick segment I wanted to do covering how Trump has changed the political landscape and what we might be able to expect going down the road into the mid-terms. Nothing too crazy, just my take on a few common themes I'm seeing and hearing when I talk to people. Enjoy! Transcript: Conversations about Trump are still just as common as they were in the height of his presidency. I've said this before - Trump is one of those people that I just can't see myself having a beer with but I certainly liked most of his policy, especially the way he handled himself with other world leaders. I had a conversation with a stranger the other day about this very thing and it became increasingly apparent that Trump lovers are not lost. People that believe the election was stolen haven't changed their opinion. Unlike other presidents and leaders from our past, the reasons are different. Trump was able to cultivate a cult like following for his presidency and it isn't something new to him. It's just a different industry he applied himself to. I say industry on purpose because at this point our Government is an industry in its own right…and it shouldn't be. Trump is made for politics like Klaus Schwab is made for The World Economic Forum. It started out when he was young. Already a business man and already making a name for himself. Whether he created a business that completely bombed or an exclusive hotel, his name was out there…and in this country, that's really what counts…especially for winning an election. Once he had the fame (good and bad) he was off to the races. He isn't necessarily new to politics, but he hadn't really engrained himself in it like a budding campaign manager would. I mean if I were as successfully renowned as Trump I'm not sure I would either. Unless I needed something to change in Government policy. Even then it's hired hands and companies that lobby on your behalf. I can't say I know Trump did that type of cheat code for sure, but if he didn't I'm sure his dad did. Keep in mind that's a legal method of getting your way in America. Don't hate the player, hate the game. Trump was a name you heard in rap songs. A name you heard in real estate mogul conversations. A name prevalent in entrepreneur magazines and more recently podcasts. He was interviews time and time again about his bankruptcy woes only to be thrown to the wolves whenever politicians were involved. Politicians have a history with this because every relationship has strings. Politicians just pull these strings for the appropriate outcome. The more strings you have, the better your chances of succeeding and getting the outcome you desired. When it came to trump, these strings were clearly from D.C to the mainstream media. So clearly - that they showed up to the public for the first time since…well since cigarette ads told you they were good for you. We don't always talk about products on our show because that isn't the point for us, but when I love something, I talk about it. EveryPlate is just another meal delivery service but it's the most affordable one and it's actually super good quality. You cook it yourself, but the portioned are accurate. If you don't like meal planning and shopping for all sorts of ingredients you'll only use once, this is your answer. If you want $20 off just for listening to The Toasty Podcast, click here There have always been some similarities between a cult leader and a regular leader. The difference only lies in what they promise. They both have charisma for the job and for the most part know how to lead a crowd. They both offer solutions to common problems in order to gain your trust, but this is about where they stop. A cult will now require you to follow small, often odd rules just to maintain the idea that you're not the leader. Leading to punishment for certain small things like drinking all of the milk or whatever it is - you get the point. A normal leader will help you solve your problems while letting you know how you failed. Beyond that there's not normally a grand finale that's mentioned…right? Generals lead to war - the grand finale is winning the war Presidents lead a county - the grand finale is dystopia (a better future) which might be the furthest one from a real cult David Korean - the grand finale was an ascent to heaven - well known cults use something like this almost every time. You might be thinking what the heck is the difference between Trumpism and a cult then? The freedom. The last attribute that I didn't mention separating a cult from a normal hierarchy is free-will. Trump did not keep you from going about your daily life or punish you for taking the last bit of milk out of the household. He had enough charisma and fame to bring you in and his grand finale was draining the swamp. So why did that fail? This is speculation, but the swamp was a lot bigger than he was prepared to handle. Maybe the people he trusted couldn't handle the burden, maybe the agencies he thought were with him were lobbied, bribed or realized their own agency would really be changed forever. The only agency that I'm not questioning in my own research at this point is USPS, and even then I'm skeptical. The strings were pulled. Trump gave into the COVID narrative and overall lost his base and hadn't even tried to gain a new one. Trump was used to business, where you're swaying people one conference room at a time. Not a melting pot of a country. In order to please a whole country, it's now more apparent than ever - that you need to be an independent or center on the political spectrum. Since that's impossible for a human because that would require no bias or predisposition, we settled for Democracy. Anyway, the point is the GOP needs Trumpism, but they may not need Trump. What happens now? Business as usual. Roe v Wade being turned over would mark one of the first big legal precedents in history catering to the left changing in the right's favor. So far in America's short time being a free-semi democratic country, the political spectrum just keeps slowly moving to the left every time a New Democratic ideology or policy makes its way to the top and ultimately passes as a dumbed down version of the original proposal. This phenomenon is actually discarded by several big names, but even if it's not exactly moving, it's certainly changing in the lefts favor over time. Just look at the political spectrum from 1940, 1960, or even 1980 and compare it to now and you'll see that over time, the GOP's “tolerance” has been their downfall. If the GOP doesn't actually seize this opportunity to regain its presence when the red wave comes, it will just be another round of the pendulum striking twelve and back to the other side we go. Controlling the House and the Senate is all fine and dandy, but if you can't find a balance between Trumpism and Conservatism mixed with independent open mindedness, we will not progress past the woke gender ideologies we find ourselves in today.
