This week on the podcast we have the busiest touring band that we are aware of in Canada ... the country duo Nice Horse. Brandi and Katie, otherwise known as Nice Horse, joined us ahead of the release of their self-titled album. We started with talking about our morning routines ... and teetered on the edge of becoming a beverage podcast. But once we were all well caffeinated (except for Katie ... she somehow doesn't drink caffeine) we dug in to the music. Katie and Brandi have been friends for years.Bonded through their love for music and writing, these two exude passion and it remains the pillar in the band. This band has gone through a couple of evolutions, but it all led them to this point. The release of their album. We hope you love this episode as much as we loved recording it. Multiple award-winning Alberta-based country band Nice Horse recently received a Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) award nomination for Video of the Year for their music video for "High School". In addition to being nominated as a band, the members of Nice Horse were also all individually nominated for CCMA Awards. Brandi Sidoryk (vocals/bass) was nominated for Bass Player of the Year, Tara McLeod (electric guitar) was nominated for Guitar Player of the Year, Katie Rox (vocals/banjo/acoustic guitar) was nominated for Specialty Instrument Player of the Year, and Krista Wodelet (vocals/drums) made history as the first-ever nominee for Drummer of the Year. “We are beyond thrilled, and honoured to have received these nominations. As a band, it truly means a lot to be recognized for our musicianship. We love playing together and we love that other artists give us a chance to play for them too. We feel it is incredibly unique that we each got a nod for doing what we love to do, and really cool that Krista made history as the first female to be nominated in the Drummer of the Year category,” says Katie Rox of Nice Horse. “As for the Video of the Year nomination, it is particularly special to us because that is a video we made ourselves. We shot everything ourselves on our iPhones using green screens, did our own wardrobe, hair, makeup, collected all of the High School photos from fans and friends, and Brandi and Krista directed the entire video and put it all together. We are so proud of it, and it feels pretty great to see that hard work pay off in a nomination like this."

CCMAs have come and gone and much like a few years ago a got to go as media to cover the festivities. This episode is Part 1 of 2 for my CCMA interviews which includes Nice Horse, Kendra Kay & Jason Benoit, Manny Blu, Shawn Austin, The Prairie States and Cory Marks. Nice Horse, Shawn and Cory were all nominated for awards this year. Nice Horse, an all female band from Calgary, who were up for Interactive Artist of the year for a 4th time, and Brandi and Krista were up for Video Director of the year for the groups video “High School.” I got to talk with 3 of the 4 members Brandi, Katie and Krista as the fourth horse Tara is currently on the road performing with another act. They are hilarious as they are talented love getting to hear them perform as I did in London. Kendra Kay and Jason Beniot, two award winning singers who came together for a holiday song "How Great Thou Art" now available today (Dec 3rd) on streaming platforms. This was a very enjoyable interview that was hilarious and fun to be a part of. Country Punk ? Well that is Manny Blu, a former MMA fighter turned country musician is bringing his own blend and take on country music and even has a brand new EP “Country Punk” coming out New Years eve. Shawn Austin, a 2021 CCMA Rising Star Nominee is the flag ship artist for the Big Loud/ Dallas Smith venture Local Hay. His debut single for imprint Tailgate to Heaven with Chris Lane has done insanely well over the fall. Next I got to speak with 3 of the members of the Edmonton group The Prairie States. These guys have a great sound and were one of the first groups in Canada to get in NFTs. This group kills it at the Alberta Country Music Awards and looks to break in on the national award scene soon. Last but certainly not least in part one of CCMA interviews is someone I've been dying to interview. He was up for Alternative Country Album of the Year with Who I Am, and who is he ? well he is Cory Marks. The North Bay native has charted well in the US on both the rock and country charts with his blend of the 2 genres but somehow has only found success on the rock charts here in Canada, but that doesn't phase him. Next Week is Part 2 featuring Dustin Bird, Ty Baynton, UK artist Katy Hurt, Ty Hunter of the Hunter Brothers and Mallory Johnson

Katie Rox is the Banjo player and vocalist with all female Country Music group Nice Horse. Katie joins Country Music Made Me to discuss how her country inspired upbringing in the rural community of Airdrie Alberta helped lead her towards a career in Country Music, how playing guitar and singing took a backseat to her love of performing at a young age, and how poems about her beloved pony Jenny were early signs of songwriting. Katie and Brendan talk about the importance of College and hearing someone else other than her parents tell her she was good at music, what it was like getting a job at the world famous Warehouse Studios in Vancouver only a few months after moving there, and what it was like when Dave Ogilvie approached her and asked if she'd like to front the Indie pop/rock group Jakalope. Finally, Katie explains how a trip to Hawaii with a group of like minded female artists led to the formation of Nice Horse, how being surrounded by three other Type A musicians helped drive the group to places they had never expected, and what it's like to receive CCMA nominations and play big summer festivals after navigating their way through the pandemic.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
