Sunfest 2025 is Saturday September 13th at the Beerwah Community Hall. This is a new location closer to public transport. The address is 25 Peachester Rd Beerwah. Here is your chance to grab a bargain, catch-up with folks you haven't seen for a while for an off-air rag chew, or just enjoy the atmosphere. Tickets this year are cheaper than last year at just $5 for general entry and $10 for a traders ticket that includes 1 general admission. There will be raffles and door prizes and a mega auction with some great items on offer. It's Sunday 3rd of August and this is QNEWS from the Darling Downs Radio Club. Hi, I'm John VK4JPM Club Secretary. And... it's been a very exciting week. We will be able to circulate a proposed update to the Club's rules, and get comment ahead of the packet going out; and tidy up some of the documentation. We don't have a locked in date yet for the rescheduled AGM, but holding 2 September. Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. Just one month to Spring and all the thorough bred horses have had another official birthday so punters check your bets. If you follow the news you at times find gems that show the way forward but they aren't necessarily obvious. During the past week the magical fairy that controls artificial intelligence was caught out. It seems that the AI with the prehistoric name, Groc, made a very obvious mistake in answering a query. The question related to a “who was” question and this dinosaur managed to reverse the birth year and the death years so that the subject would have been a minus quantity, never alive. Lots of people like to be early adopters of technology and trends and that is fine. You can't really come to much harm following fashion trends or decorating with the latest home furnishings. The limit for most of us is the budget. One area that is being increasingly integrated into modern systems is a reliance on AI to complete multitudes of different tasks. Until recently, higher education was trying to solve the issue of students copying material from the internet or having paid writers complete necessary assignments. Today the concern is that AI is fulfilling those tasks and their guarantee that the work submitted reflects any learning and for that matter, whether it has been checked for accuracy against known sources of material. So this might seem the price of innovation but who would want to be taught by a teacher who only knows how to get ChatGPT to do the work? Who would prefer to be treated by a healthcare professional whose CV is littered with anonymous studies done on their laptop? There can be dangers in rushing adoption of new things and the more sophisticated the harder they may be to control. On the other hand, the news was filled by the story of the latest attempted rocket launch from near Bowen. It was almost an anticlimax that the launch took place at all after many events had caused numerous delays previously. The fact that the rocket rose off the launch pad but descended to Earth in under a minute has not been greeted as failure by the company involved. We might remember when the Space-X rockets had multiple failures, their CEO, Elon Musk, also expressed the same sentiment. For those seeking progress it is not the fact that the first or 100 th attempt was not successful but the lessons to be learned to progress development are the important factors. When we look back to an inventor and innovator called Thomas Alva Edison, he was known for his process of re-iteration, in proving an idea could be made to work the way he imagined it. I believe we can take these lessons to heart in our own activities. Don't blindly trust all that is new or available on the internet and be prepared to think over what stopped our last experiment from succeeding. I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that's what I think, how about you?
“We will carve our place into time and space.” —Wild Things, Alessia Cara It's powerful outcry, a protest and empowerment song by Alessia, as sister/co-host Kerry loves music that's unapologetic - Things are heating up during July's Disability Pride Month (DPM). This week on Outlook we're continuing the Pride talk on another mixed bag with brother/co-host Brian's baseball adventures, reading image descriptions of the stadium, and then Kerry shares about her memories of seeing the Toronto Bluejay's Sky Dome (roof open and sky exposed or closed). Accessibility - how he and BF Barry asked at Guest Services for accessible ways to follow the game and a giant company like Rogers doing very little even with all their resources. Advocacy - summer being a time people love to attend festivals and a recent CBC London Morning segment speaking with an accessibility consultant in a wheelchair about how to make something like London's Sunfest more inclusive. And equality - describing the colours of the Disability Pride Flag as July's DPM continues. While Kerry and guide dog Oyster recently had a girl's day, watching Friends, sleeping on the couch, and going out in the back yard for which Kerry is writing an essay about in a July writing class: Oyster's Secret Garden, Brian and Barry had a good time out socialising in London and spending a lot of time on patios and at local spots across town. He shares about transportation issues and talking with Uber drivers, and. Kerry shares, while describing the need for colours and vivid imagery on a flag like that of DPM along with the grief she's now receiving peer support for when she misses seeing the colours she has always loved and once could make out. When Kerry was in Ireland and went forest bathing, she was encouraged to take her power back and she finds that works better through song lyrics than through cursing. It's a summer of Pride, a lifetime of advocacy, and demanding equality along the way with cross-community support so be one of the Wild Ones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5vUBQBykJ4

(SEASON 3. EP 44) In this episode, I sat down with Canadian country music star Steven Lee Olsen, fresh off the release of his latest single, "Never Not Care", a heartfelt duet with Grammy-nominated artist Mickey Guyton. Steven opens up about the inspiration behind this powerful track, and how collaborating with Mickey brought a new depth to the song. He also opens up about how he taps into the mindset needed to write a song about a past relationship, despite being happily married with a child now. The conversation also dives into one of Steven's past hits, "Blue Ain't Your Color," which he wrote and Keith Urban recorded, becoming a massive success! Steven shares the story behind that song and what it was like to see his words come to life through Keith's iconic voice. In the summer Steven shared a special moment with Keith on stage at SunFest in BC, listen to find out what happened. In addition, Steven talks about hitting the road with fellow Canadian country artist JoJo Mason on the "Country Night in Canada" tour, where they're bringing their music to fans across the country and spills what you can expect! Throughout the episode, Steven touches on a core belief: everything happens when it's supposed to. He talks about how patience, persistence, and trusting the journey have been key to his success and how that mindset has shaped his career. This is a murder mystery. This is a real life story set in a vast land, the San Luis Valley of Colorado. It's a huge flat prairie flanked by mountains, and it's far off the beaten path. Author Ted Conover takes us there in this Desideratum. A desideratum is an essential thing and this story got me thinking about lots of essential things - like wide open spaces, what to do with a rattlesnake, the peace you find in silence, and the need for connection. Ted Conover is perhaps best known for spending a year as a prison guard at the maximum security prison Sing Sing in New York. The book he wrote about that experience was called Newjack and it earned a National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction and made Ted a Pulitzer Prize Finalist. His work expands and deepens what we think of as Journalism. He submerges himself in often uncomfortable situations and then takes readers along with him. Today we're talking about his latest immersive experience and book called Cheap Land Colorado. In his observation of small details side by side with his big picture perspectives, he paints a very complete picture with his own voice as narrator in your ear. I hope you enjoy getting to know Ted Conover as much as I have. I want to thank The Colorado Sun for shining their light on Ted's work. I listen to the Sun's podcast called The Daily Sun-Up, and every Sunday I check out their SunLit feature for author spotlights. Sunlit editor Kevin Simpson often talks to authors on The Daily Sun-ups Friday podcast. Check it out at coloradosun.com or wherever you're listening to this podcast.
