Jessica Stuart is a multi-instrumentalist and an acclaimed songwriter with an international fan base. Not only taking the lead on stage, she's also a skilled producer and in-demand side person working across genres. I've known Jessica for over a decade and have been inspired by her since our collaborations on stage as performing songwriters. I was especially moved when I saw  a documentary she both stars in and composed the soundtrack for. The CBC documentary, spearheaded by Oscar winning director Daniel Roher, follows Jessica's decades-later return to Japan to look for her childhood friend who had mysteriously disappeared. In our chat, she talks about the shock of the film's viral, worldwide reach with millions watching the most intimate moments in her search for someone she thought she'd lost forever. We had so much to catch up on and I was eager to ask Jessica about what she has learned on her way to becoming a top-tier musician, touring internationally and earning big stage opportunities with major musical theatre productions. We talk about what is worth working towards- like better conditions for musicians to be appreciated.  Beyond her creative projects, Jessica opens up about going to therapy and changing her perspective on making confident choices. She told me about how deepening her focus by refusing to compromise on quality has led to both better work life balance and more exciting career opportunities.  We dive into an ongoing success first born from a rejection: her songwriters' residency “JS Presents”, held monthly at Toronto's treasured haven for musicians, the Tranzac Club. She has created a reflective space of her own for her and other songwriters to perform in an intimate “listening room” setting, where artists are given the respect and compensation they deserve- along with the opportunity to world debut a new composition!  Jessica's dedication to building spaces for musicians to feel safe in experimenting and creating shines through wherever she goes. This episode brought back so many music making memories for me, and even if you aren't a musician yourself, I know you'll connect with Jessica's story. - - - When Vancouver-born, guitarist, koto player, vocalist and songwriter Jessica Stuart moved to Toronto, quitting work as vintage clothing buyer for a career in music, her goals were simple – release an album of original songs, hear her music on the radio, and satisfy her wanderlust on tour around the world. Stuart's trio The Jessica Stuart Few checked the final box with their first Asian tour (and Top 40 single in Japan) in 2013, and since then, have played music festivals and been heard on airwaves from Australia to Germany and beyond. Having made a name for herself through signature rhythmic and harmonically adventurous jazzy art pop, Jessica has tapped into a new creative stream under artist name, JESSA, smashing layers of playful guitars, koto and vocals into an indie-jazz-pop package, singing about trying to keep the joy in everyday life while navigating this weird world and all of its curve-balls. Also an in-demand side player, Stuart can be found on stage supporting original artists' projects (i.e. Fefe Dobson; Wild Black; WiztheMC), as member of popular tribute acts (i.e. Idioteque; UK Calling), and as sub guitarist for Mirvish Productions' production of SIX. If you hadn't yet heard Jessica's music through her Best Album win at the Independent Music Awards, her five songs in the finals of the Canadian Songwriting Competition, or the record crushing, tear-jerking CBC documentary about her time living in Japan as a child directed by Academy Award winner Daniel Roher (Finding Fukue, Nov 2018, 14 million + views, featuring Stuart's musical score), then you'll get to know her through her latest full-length album, Simple Songs and newest single, Give It Back, It's Mine. - - - www.jessicastuartmusic.com www.joanbeckowlegacy.com http://www.idioteque.ca/ https://instagram.com/jessicastuartmusic https://www.youtube.com/@JESSAakaJessicaStuartMusic https://www.facebook.com/jessicastuartmusic - - -  Lauren's Best invites you to curiously consider art and life as host, Lauren Best, illuminates the creative process as an entrepreneur, mother and interdisciplinary artist. In She's a Badass, music journalist Katherine Yeske Taylor interviews twenty significant and compelling women in rock, devoting an entire chapter to each one, taking an in-depth look at the incredible talent, determination—and, often, humor—they needed to succeed in their careers (and life). Interviewees range from legendary artists through notable up-and-comers: Suzi Quatro, Ann Wilson (Heart), Exene Cervenka (X), Gina Schock (The Go-Go's), Lydia Lunch, Suzanne Vega, Cherie Currie (The Runaways), Joan Osborne, Donita Sparks (L7), Amy Ray (Indigo Girls), Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses/The Breeders/Belly), Paula Cole, Tobi Vail (Bikini Kill), Laura Veirs, Catherine Popper, Amanda Palmer, Bonnie Bloomgarden (Death Valley Girls), Orianthi, Fefe Dobson, and Sade Sanchez (L.A. Witch). Their experiences reveal the varied and unique challenges these women have faced, how they overcame them, and what they think still needs to be done to continue making progress on the equality front. Their stories prove that promoting feminism—either through activism or by living example—is undeniably badass. A very special Afterword is included from Susan Rogers, the longtime in-house recording engineer for Prince. Feminism has always been a complex and controversial topic, as female rock musicians know especially well. Over the course of the twenty conversations artists such as Ann Wilson share their experience and views on how women are still treated differently than their male counterparts and that it still happens "...constantly. All the time,” Wilson tells Yeske Taylor, adding, "By standing up and being bold and not being submissive, do females go against the very basis of their gender, as it applies to culture? If they do, then that's called being rebellious.” And, as Tobi Vail of Bikini Kill notes in her chapter, that element of rebellion remains necessary to this day: “If you look at history, you can see that progress is not linear; it goes back and forth, You never know when [progress] is going to go backwards, so you always have to be fighting. You have to be aware that rights we do have were achieved through political struggle. You can't take them for granted.”

From writing about her angsty rebellious teenage years to performing those songs on tour with Justin Timberlake, Fefe walks me through what it was like to be a female in the early 2000s breaking into the male-dominated pop-punk scene. Besides her goal of leaving the boys in the dust, what she really cared about was writing music that reflected what she felt on the inside.Fefe is still taking the music scene by storm with her latest single “Recharge My Heart,” and is inspiring the next generation of powerful female artists such as Olivia Rodrigo and WILLOW.I can't help but fan-girl about this badass. When the music industry tries to put you in a box, what do you do? For Fefe Dobson, “Brandy Spears'' was the box industry executives tried to force her into. Referring to a black girl like Brandy with a pop voice like Britney, Dobson knew she would never be successful playing a role that wasn't true to herself. Instead, she made her mark in music history with her 2003 rock-infused debut album at the age of 18. In this week's episode of Name 3 Songs, we sit down with Dobson herself to hear about the challenges she faced over the years in an industry that didn't know how to handle her. Despite the ups and downs, Dobson remains clear in her passion for creating authentic music. In our exclusive interview, she tells us about the importance of empowering women in music and lets us in on some of the many “blessings” she received over the years like seeing Miley Cyrus perform her song “Start All Over.”  Enjoy this episode? Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Tyler Shaw over Zoom video! From a soothing ballad to an exhilarating electronic dance track, Tyler Shaw and Dzeko join forces to remix Shaw’s latest single “When You’re Home.” The world renowned Canadian DJ and producer took Tyler's most romantic song to date and transformed it into an infectious club beat, proving Shaw’s sounds are bound to no genre.“When I first heard ‘When You’re Home’ I instantly had an idea to do a remix to it.” says Dzeko on its inspiration, “This remix will give you a completely different take on the song with a more melodic house feel to it.” Tyler Shaw adds, “Dzeko is such an immense talent and I love his vibe so I knew he would bring the right energy to this. I knew I could trust him with remixing it.”The remix comes after an already impressive start to the year. “When You’re Home” was Tyler’s first release in 2021 and originally produced by Grammy-award nominated Jon Levine (Dua Lipa, Alessia Cara, Bebe Rexha, Drake), and written by Tyler Shaw, Alex Beitzke (James Arthur), and Henry Brill (Jack Garrat). Garnering praise from publications including 1883 Magazine, American Songwriter, Marie Claire, Parade, Euphoria, and a wealth of international playlists including  Spotify’s 'New Music Friday', Apple Music's 'New Music Daily' and the cover of Amazon Music's 'Fresh Pop', the world is taking note of Shaw's talents. With the release of “When You’re Home” and this latest version, Tyler’s momentum continues to rapidly rise as he breaks into both the US and UK.A multi-platinum selling artist with a seasoned history in the music industry, Tyler Shaw is no stranger to collaborations as he has worked with some of the biggest artists across the globe such as Avril Lavigne, Fefe Dobson, Justin Bieber, Michael Bublé, Sarah McLachlan, Walk Off The Earth, toured with Selena Gomez and opened for massive international acts like Alessia Cara and Shawn Mendes. The “When You’re Home” remix with Dzeko adds more excitement for Tyler’s future as he keeps us guessing for what’s coming next.Dzeko is a platinum-certified electronic music DJ from Toronto, Canada. Dzeko uncovered a passion for producing and DJing at the age of 14. By the age of 17, Dzeko had caught the eye of countless global superstars, including direct support from the likes of Tiësto, Steve Aoki, to name a few. His dream had started young, and no ceiling was in sight for what this prodigal producer was set to create. This pedigree quickly thrust Dzeko to global stardom on the stages of Tomorrowland, TomorrowWorld, Creamfields, Ultra Music Festival, and Coachella. In 2018 Dzeko joined his Grammy-winning compatriot Tiësto in the platinum circle with their instant hit "Jackie Chan" featuring Preme and Post Malone. Skyrocketing to success as the summer's undisputed hit track, the song was endowed with a Best Dance Recording nomination at the Billboard Music Awards, a JUNO nomination, and labelled as SOCAN best pop song.We want to hear from you! They say that laughter is the best medicine, but for Canadian guitarist and songwriter Darren Michael Boyd, music has been the ultimate cure. After a life-altering car accident, the Ottawa and Toronto-based musician created his debut album, “Lifting The Curse,” as a therapy for the physical and psychological complications that followed the accident. Painstakingly writing, recording, and producing the 9-track album himself, Boyd only called upon outside help for one track, “Was It Something I Said,” which features drums by Emily Dolan Davies (The Darkness, Kim Wilde.) Mastering was done by Harry Hess at H-Bomb Mastering (Barenaked Ladies, Danko Jones, Monster Truck.) He was invited multiple occasions to privately audition for platinum-selling artist Fefe Dobson, and asked to write songs for Alice Cooper’s daughter Calico Cooper, and long time bassist Chuck Garric’s band Beasto Blanco. Darren received a scholarship to Guitar Workshop Plus in Toronto, with some of the best players in the business as instructors (Paul Gilbert/Billy Sheehan/Sue Foley). He has shared the stage with such acts as One-Eyed Doll, Wednesday 13, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stryper, Beasto Blanco, and Lee Aaron. In the spring of 2019 he joined the Mississippi Mudds Theatre Group to play guitar for a sold-out run of Queen’s We Will Rock You. The Mississippi Mudds won the Ottawa Faces Magazine Award for Favourite Theatre Group for that year. In the spring of 2020, Boyd was voted best local musician, and best guitar teacher, in the Ottawa Valley/North Grenville Readers Choice Awards. Title: Fefe Dobson is Back Swinging and On Fire   Description: Bunnie’s got a lot to cover today, so strap in and get ready. Singer-songwriter and rocker Fefe Dobson joins the show to talk with Bunnie about life in Nashville, cursing on network TV, crazy interview questions, opening for Justin Timberlake, and the story behind how she met her now fiancé Yelawolf. Fefe also talks about what we can expect in terms of some new music and how to cop her dope style including those iconic leather pants.   Takeaways: Fefe is originally from Canada, but calls Nashville home these days. Fefe realized at a young age that she loved performing and self taught herself guitar and piano. Judy Garland, Michael Jackson and Guns n’ Roses were huge influences on Fefe’s love of expressing emotion through music. When she was a teenager and Jive Records offered her an artist development deal, Fefe turned it down because she didn’t want to be boxed in as just a pop artist. She needed the freedom to rock and really be her full self as an artist. Fefe constantly had comparisons to Avril Lavigne, but the two actually get along and have a ton of respect for each other. Fefe signed to Def Jam in 2002, but then went back to Toronto after her album didn’t come out. She took time off to refocus and found success as a writer for singers like Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. As a huge NSync fan it was pretty crazy for Fefe when she got to open (not in that way, unfortunately) for Justin Timberlake on his European tour. Fefe also has written for Cyndi Lauper and Joan Jett, and gotten some killer advice from the powerhouse babe Courtney Love. Fefe met Yelawolf in 2011 at the Fantasy Factory and it was kinda love at first sight despite her literally running the other direction from him. There may even be an album together one day, be sure to stay tuned. Yes, there will be new music soon! Fefe rounded up some amazing people and will be back in the studio in June and July.   Quotes: “I realized that if I could make people happy and laugh, then I was doing okay.” - Fefe “I won’t let J play R Kelly, but I will bump the shit outta Michael Jackson.” - Bunnie “I need guitars. I need rock n’ roll. I need to be free.” - Fefe “To me, Avril is Mandy Moore on her period.” - Bunnie “It’s how I trap people though. Once I f*ck you, you are never leaving.” - Bunnie   Mentioned: Jelly Roll The Weeknd @iamfefemusic Fefe Dobson Fefe Dobson YouTube Fantasy Factory LaMarque   Check out Bunnie: @xomgitsbunnie YouTube @officialdumbblonde
