SiriusXM's folk radio programmer Mary Sue Twohy has not had a straight career path, but it's certainly been adventurous. Mary Sue, who is about to be inducted into the Folk DJ Hall of Fame, has held many different jobs over her life, most notably as a touring singer songwriter and as a beloved folk radio programmer, host and active community member. It all began in a vibrant musical and creative home in Aberdeen, New Jersey. With fond memories of family gatherings filled with guitars (and banjos!), laughter, and a distinctive 70s aesthetic, Mary Sue reflects on how her father's love for folk music has shaped her own artistic journey. We dive into how his favorite music, from Joan Baez to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, have resonated throughout her life.As a seasoned musician and now a prominent figure in the radio world, Mary Sue discusses her transition from performing artist to radio programmer at SiriusXM (she currently manages The Village, the folk channel along with several other channels). She emphasizes the importance of connection in radio, both with the audience and the artists she showcases, highlighting how her background as a musician allows her to curate a unique listening experience. Her passion for folk music and her commitment to uplifting diverse voices within the genre shine through as she shares insights on compassion, community, and the healing power of music.Throughout our conversation, Mary Sue's authenticity and warmth are evident as she navigates topics like her hobbies outside of music, the significance of compassion in her work, and her recent induction into the Folk DJ Hall of Fame. We also touch on her thoughts about the Bob Dylan movie and engage in a fun lightning round where she shares her favorite songs and memorable moments from her career.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/  Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews  Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? The conversation highlights the festival's return after a hiatus and dives into the event's rich history, logistics, and lineup. Dave shares the festival's origin story, starting at Watermelon Park and its evolution over two decades, including challenges like almost canceling due to rain in 2018. He emphasizes the sense of community and the fun of taking a break and coming back refreshed and inspired. The festival offers a diverse array of bluegrass acts and other activities. This year's headliner is Peter Rowan, along with other notable performers like Wyatt Ellis, Della Mae, and John McEuen. The event also features workshops, kids' activities, vendor stalls, and, of course, plenty of opportunities for impromptu jam sessions. Dave talks about the detailed schedule for both days, starting in the evening on September 5, with early arrival music camps with the official kickoff on September 6 with yoga, workshops, and dance sessions, and continuing with performances and other activities. Campers are encouraged to arrive on the 5th to grab prime camping spots - there is no additional fee to camp.  For families, the festival offers a great environment with various kids' activities like recycled instrument making, a parachute and pinata event, and even a festival parade. Besides music, there will be craft vendors and a variety of food stalls. Janet and Dave also discuss the practical aspects such as ticket prices, camping options, and additional amenities like showers. They assure listeners that the festival is designed to be family-friendly and inclusive, with special half-price tickets for teens and free admission for kids under 12. Send us a Text Message. There are some who still think of multi-instrumentalist John McEuen as the lively multi-instrumentalist who helped found the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in the mid ‘60s and then remained at the band's helm for some 50 years. Nevertheless, after parting ways with the group in 2017 due to various personal and professional disagreements, he's managed to carve out a vigorous and varied solo career — one which includes an autobiography, a role as host of the Acoustic Traveller radio program on Sirius/XM, a notable contribution to pal Steve Martin's number one, Grammy-winning album The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo, and his own series of solo albums. His allegiance to tradition and the music bred in America's heartland has always been foremost in his efforts, a fact that's never been more obvious than on his latest LP, The Newsman, a series of striking spoken word narratives with instrumental accompaniment. McEuen shares his thoughts on the project -- and his career in general -- with Lee and Billy courtesy of My Backstage Pass. Send us a Text Message. From an early age, Harry Tuft was involved in piano and clarinet lessons. Through a summer camp counselor, he learned about the ukulele and became interested in playing that instrument. From there, he moved to a baritone ukulele, and then a six-string guitar. His father loved classical music and opera and would often play traditional classical during dinner. After dinner, Tuft would listen to the pop and R&B stations of the day and sing along with the likes of Nat King Cole, Jo Stafford, and Perry Como. From John McEuen: "With the airing of Ken Burns Country Music, [John] McEuen has brought acoustic music to many new fans, taking part in 4 episodes of the series. Episode 6 is called Will The Circle Be Unbroken and John closes that one. A co-founding member of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (1966, with a dream ‘to be on the radio').  October 2017, after [the] 50th anniversary tour, John left the band to pursue his own tour dates and projects, and stepped off the bus." From a very young age, inspired by a piano inherited from his grandparents, Howard Dlugasch took piano lessons of his own volition. By his early teens, he started playing a multitude of instruments, such as guitar, drums, bass, and vocals. He jokes that he is mediocre at all of them, but only because he is a musician who wants to focus on a multitude of instruments at once rather than completely on one specific instrument.  Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear podcast featuring the news and culture from peak to peak. John McEuen was born in 1945 and spent his high school years in California's Orange County. He and lifelong high-school friend Steve Martin both got a job in 1963 in the magic shop at Disneyland when they were just 16. When John saw Missouri bluegrass group The Dillards in an Orange County club a couple of years later, his life changed forever. He knew he wanted to be “a traveling music man”. As a multi-instrumentalist (banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle) John has been recognised as a founding member and award-winning outstanding performer of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. He left the group at the end of the 50th year anniversary tour in 2017 due to demands for his solo work and the desire to do new things. In addition to John's numerous solo accolades, NGDB was inducted in to Colorado Music Hall of Fame 2015. It's all covered in his book 'The Life I've Picked' from 2018. In 1971 John initiated the now landmark Will the Circle be Unbroken* album, hooking Nitty Gritty Dirt Band up with his musical mentors Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson. The now multi-platinum “Circle” is in both the Library of Congress and the Grammy Hall of Fame. Radio Host, author, television show producer, writer, concert promoter, multi-instrumental musician, performer and magician. His second book – Will the Circle Be Unbroken – 50th anniversary Year – The Making of a Landmark Album captures 145 of his brother's (record producer/manager) ‘masterpiece' photos and tells the stories behind each one. John has made over 46 albums (7 solo) that have earned four platinum and five gold records, multiple Grammy Awards and nominations, CMA and ACM awards, an Emmy film score nomination, IBMA record of the year award, and performed on another 25 albums as guest artist. John's production of Steve Martin – The Crow won the 2010 Best Bluegrass Album Grammy. Other accolades include: Grammy nomination for String Wizards II, the Uncle Dave Macon Award (for excellence in preservation and performance of historic music). He is a producer/composer of film scores and has produced award-winning projects of his own and for several other artists. John has continually performed since 1963 – doing over 11,000 concerts, 300 television shows, 10,000 interviews and flown more than 4 million miles. John's rich history of creating, producing and preserving original and traditional folk music earned him the 2013 Charlie Poole Lifetime Achievement Award. John was inducted in 2017 to the American Banjo Museum Hall of Fame In this episode, John shares the stories from his musical life and tells us how excited he is to have recently released something entirely different. It's a spoken word album called "The Newsman: A Man of Record" which is a collection of poems and stories set to music. GEORGIA RADIO - Grammy winner John McEuen will released his new album, TheNewsman, on March 22nd viaCompass Records. And he joined us to talk about it, plus his incredible music career to date.In an unprecedented move for McEuen, the album is 11 spoken word tracks, all mini movies with his unique style ofmusic behind each one. From the opening title track, which is a true storyabout a man who sold newspapers and was a tremendous influence on the youngmusician in Los Angeles, to the final cut, “Julie's Theme,” inspired by JulesVerne telling a friend, in a French cemetery, about his recently deceased youngwife, McEuen presents an album filled with stories that will inspire andperhaps bring a tear to your eye.The different tracks on the album rage from “Killed at theFord,” a Civil War-era poem that tells of the death of a young soldier as heand friends go to meet a picket-guard by a ford. Although no trouble is expected, a shot isfired from the woods and the young man is dead. Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellowdoesn't end the poem there, but relates how it affects the young man's familyat home.“The Cremation of Sam McGee,” one of the most famous poemswritten by Robert Service, was published in 1907. It is told from theperspective of the man who cremates the prospector who froze to death in theYukon while searching for gold. The Stephen Vincent Benét poem “The Mountain Whippoorwill”was published in 1925. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band released it on their album“Stars & Striped Forever” in 1974.“Fly Trouble” is a Hank Williams Sr. classic from 1949, and oneof “talking blues” numbers that McEuen has recited many times over the pastyears.“Old Rivers” was written by Cliff Crofford andreleased by Walter Brennan in 1963, while Thomas Monroe wrote “Nui Ba Den”while he was in Vietnam in 1968. More recent writings are “Pineapple John” byJohn Carter Cash, Hans Olson's “I'll Be Glad When I Run Out Of Gas” andThaddeus Bryant's “Red Clay.”“I have been around the world playing music and collectingstories for… a long time,” McEuen acknowledges. “As a teenager, well beforeNitty Gritty Dirt Band, I loved Meredith Wilson's The Music Man.Before I started playing I must have recited “Ya Got Trouble”2,000times! Later, when performing became part of the life I picked, every now andthen I would do one of these ‘stories' (often a Hank Williams talking blues) onstage, always happy about how well they went over.“I did The Mountain Whippoorwill for many years with theearly Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Then, another story would come along, be learned, and ‘filed away' for a future date. ‘The stories' soon tired of waiting to ‘getdone'.“So, I did them.”McEuen credits work he has done on film scores as a majorinfluence on this album. He especially credits Tommy Lee Jones, who along with SissySpacek starred in “Good Ole Boys,” for which he did the soundtrack.“At this point of my career, film score work (14 cool scores)gave me the experience of putting background music with words and picture, without getting ‘in the way' with music,” McEuen says. “I learned from TommyLee Jones, while I was doing a score for him, that when someone says ‘Hey,that's a great score going on there,' the music person has failed to supportthe picture. You can't let the music dominate, it has to support what'shappening.' So it sometimes is with spoken word. This album is a soundtrack forfilms not yet made.”McEuen says that watching the Tom Hanks film News of theWorld made him finish this album. “I feel like that character, having toread the news to people who have not yet heard it. And, my first ‘song', thetitle cut, was about that type of fellow in a way, and hisstory had tobe told.“I find in this final year of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this albumcomes in a good space. That was a great 50-year run for me, and now that it hasrun its course, it's time for The Newsman!“I look forward to going out and telling people about those 50years that impacted so many, especially me, playing some new music, andthrowing a few of these stories in along the way.”McEuen believes these spoken word offerings can fit on radio.“It is my suggestion that programmers add one of these cuts in between othermusic they are playing, finding styles that fit each – as they are eachdifferent. Listening to The Newsman from top to bottom is a lot to askof anyone! I look forward to seeing what people program with various cuts.”QUICK LINK: https://store.compassrecords.com/products/the-newsman-a-man-of-recordAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Grammy winner John McEuen will release his new album, The Newsman, on April 12 on Compass Records. An unprecedented move for McEuen, the album is 10 spoken word tracks (and one instrumental), all mini-movies, with John's unique style of music behind each. From the opening title track, a true story about a man who sold newspapers and was a tremendous influence on the young musician in Los Angeles, to the final cut, “Julie's Theme,” inspired by Julies Verne telling a friend, in a French cemetery, about his recently deceased young wife, McEuen presents an album filled with stories that will inspire and perhaps bring a tear to your eye. The different tracks on the album range from “Killed at the Ford,” a Civil War-era poem that tells of the death of a young soldier as he and friends go to meet a picket-guard by a ford,  not expecting trouble. A shot is fired from the woods, and the young man is dead. Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow doesn't end the poem there, but relates how it affects the young man's family at home. “The Cremation of Sam McGee,” one of the most famous poems written by Robert Service, was published in 1907, told from the perspective of the man who cremates the prospector who died in the Yukon, while searching for gold. The Stephen Vincent Benét poem “The Mountain Whippoorwill” (published in 1925). “FlyTrouble” is a Hank Williams Sr. classic from 1949, and one of “talking blues”numbers that McEuen has recited many times over the past years.“OldRivers” was released by Walter Brennann1963,  Thomas Monroe wrote “Nui Ba Den” while he was in Vietnam in 1968.More recent writings are “Pineapple John” by John Carter Cash, Hans Olson's“I'll Be Glad When I Run Out Of Gas” and Thaddeus Bryant's “Red Clay.” This album is a soundtrack for films not yet made.” McEuen says that watching the Tom Hanks film News of the World made him finish this album. “I feel like that character, having to read the news to people who have not yet heard it. And, my first ‘song', the title cut, was about that type of fellow, in a way, and his story had to be told.I find in this final year of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this album comes in a good space. That was a great 50-year run for me, and now that it has run its course, it's time for The Newsman. I look forward to going out and telling people about those 50 years that impacted so many, especially me, playing some new music, and throwing a few of these stories in along the way.” McEuen believes these spoken word offerings can fit on radio. “It is my suggestion to add one of these cuts in between other music you are playing, finding styles that fit each – as they are each different. Listening to from top to bottom is a lot to ask of anyone! I look forward to seeing what people program with various cuts.” #nittygrittydirtband #spokenword #newalbum #newmusic #stevemartin #music #poetry #poems #tommyleejones #sissyspacek

Born Justin Brownlee Tolley in Central VA April 6, 1974, Justin took in a variety of early music influences from an early age including classic rock, R&B, funk and classic country and Americana genres to eventually learn piano, trombone & bass guitar and navigate his unique path and career in music. He has arranged & written in Virginia original bands including RedLightGo 97-99 (Lexington), Mafia Track Suit 09-12 (Roanoke), while hustling the cover band circuit for 13 years with the Worx. When not booked with the Worx, always eager to meet players and play with Roanoke valley bands. With the Worx, he opened for bands including: Keith Urban, Tracy Lawrence, Trace Adkins, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, to name a few. Always a proponent of moving the Roanoke scene forward, he spent the early 2000s at downtown haunts like Green Dolphin's open mic, Martin's, Blue5, 202, Awfuls - always up to hang and support members of the Roanoke music scene.  His move to Nashville in early 2015 continued an ever-changing career path, connecting with Jon Wysocki former drummer of Staind to make music together. Lower Broadway & midtown became the grind and networking hub amidst one of the richest musician pools on the planet. Writing, recording and touring with Jon behind Natalie Brady Band (see FB and YouTube), then following the restart of the Covid lockdown, bassist of original rock act River Ghost. (found on all streaming platforms) During his 7+ years in Nashville, he primarily toured the midwest from the Gulf up to Minneapolis, Kansas City to Key West from 2015-2019 with multiple bands. One of his favorite tours as bass player for upcoming artist Kasey Tyndall, opening for Whiskey Myers & Jamey Johnson - both huge musical influences. Moving on from the Natalie Brady Band post Covid shutdown, he headed back to Nashville and through a shared reference met up with River Ghost, all original bluesy/ swampy-rock band akin to Crowes/ Allman/ Sabbath ..  The remaining two years in Nashville was spent writing, showcasing and recording River Ghost material, while juggling steady shifts with “Loud & Co”, bending the rules with tired setlist at a time in and around Nashville, mostly in the Lower Broadway scene. Upon meeting Belgium native Kathleen Ongena in Nashville, they formed 369 Music, a Rock cover band putting hand-selected players together to gig around Nashville.  Eventually the need to relocate to Virginia came to bear since losing his father to a stroke in 2019. The decision was made in fall 2022 to return home to take care of the home place in Natural Bridge Station. Justin and Kat set up 369 Music gigs in Virginia, enlisting players in the area to round out the lineup.  Follow on FB at 369 Music. Now residing in Natural Bridge Station, Justin still pursues music when the gigs present themselves, as well as aviation - working toward his pilot license. And like the Nashville scene, willing to jump in when bands are in need of bass in the area. ‘369 Music', is currently putting together a press kit to promote bookings, also dates on his books playing for local Kid Rock tribute act “Cowboy”.

What could possibly happen to make a music festival be tagged as "3 Days of Sodom and Gomorrah?" How about toilets on fire? Drugs being sold as openly as sex? Young rock fans strolling naked through the streets of Sedalia, Missouri as they ditched their clothing to cope with the summer heat? Yes, all this and more descended on this small Missouri town in a festival that was marketed, in part, to town officials as a method of showcasing bluegrass music. There was a little bluegrass but there was a whole lot more of rock. As bad as the behavior of many of the fans was, that was how great the music was. Twenty-seven bands in all, including The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Eagles, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, REO Speedwagon, and more performed for hot, thirsty, and high rock fans in an epic and unforgettable weekend of rock (mostly) music.

THE ARWEN LEWIS SHOW Today, Arwen welcomes the prolific music artist Jonathan McEuen to the show! Jonathan McEuen is a guitar virtuoso with a voice that sings directly to one's soul. He's spent his life on the stage and in recording studios, creating and performing music in country rock, bluegrass, Americana, rock and roll, and more. By age six, Jonathan was on stage with his father at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, performing for sold-out crowds. Jonathan has recorded a vast array of solo materials, collaborated and toured with his father, John McEuen, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Dave Mason, and many more. You could compare Jonathan to Elvis Presley with a shimmer of Jimmy Hendrix, but he is most certainly unique and in some ways, incomparable in his masterful talents as a musician.
