This week on my podcast, “About Art” I spoke with the British contemporary artist Robert Montgomery. Montgomery is well known for his work in public space. He makes light works, billboard poems, fire poems, paintings and watercolors. His work brings text art closer to the language of poetry. He represented the UK in the 2012 Kochi Biennale and the 2016 Yinchuan Biennale. His work is in museum collections across the world including the Albright Knox in New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. He has had solo museum projects at the Aspen Art Museum in Colorado, Oklahoma Contemporary in Oklahoma City, and the Cer Modern Museum in Ankara. His work was recently included in the Musée du Louvre exhibition “La Suite de l'Histoire” in Paris. His work is hugely popular on the internet, the piece “The People You Love Become Ghosts Inside of You” has been shared online more than 200 million times.   He and Zuckerman discuss the gentle 90 percent, kindness, grief, love outlasting death, the temporary nature of power and wealth, modernist poetry, how to be a painter and poet at the same time, devotional reflection, having conversations with people across time, the magic in the mundane, light, and mentorship!

Avery Cannon grew up in Edmond and attended Edmond North. He spent a lot of his free time watching movies, making movies with his friends, and listening to music. His love of film and music has been informing his creativity since the beginning.    He bounced around after high school and along the way discovered his creative spirit through food and restaurants. After learning to roll sushi in Norman, he moved to Denver and joined the chef team at Investco Field. About 10 years ago, Avery moved back to Oklahoma City and started Pachinko Parlor with his cousin, Eric Smith.    From there, Cannon's take on groundbreaking food concepts and appreciation for finely selected ingredients has translated into a series of innovative restaurants in Oklahoma City, such as Empire Slice House and Wheeze the Juice. This past July, Cannon embarked on a new project that was a year in the making:  Café Contemporary. The restaurant is located inside Oklahoma Contemporary and is a place where people can enjoy art in its many forms, including gastronomy.    Please welcome Avery to Action City!

Six Degrees of Silvis

Erwin Redl is based in Bowling Green, OH and New York City. He states that: “Since 1997, I have investigated the process of “reverse engineering” by (re-)translating the abstract aesthetic language of virtual reality and 3‑D computer modeling, back into architectural environments by means of large-scale light installations. Space is experienced as a second skin, our social skin, which is transformed through my artistic intervention. Due to the very nature of its architectural dimension, participating by simply being “present” is an integral part of the installation. Visual perception works in conjunction with corporeal motion, and the subsequent passage of time.” The formal aspect of his work becomes easily accessible through conscious aesthetic reduction to a minimalist vocabulary. Interpretation and understanding of this characteristic is dependent upon the viewer’s subjective references. Equally, the various interactions between the visitors within the context of the installation re-shape each viewer’s subjective references and reveal a complex social phenomenon. Redl’s large scale light installations have been featured in major museums, as well as in the public space around the world. Recent projects include “White Out,” which as installed in Madison Square Park, New York City and at the Oklahoma Contemporary, Oklahoma City and “Circles Unity” presented the winter in the tunnel below the Tampa Convention Center, Tampa, Florida.

Climate of the Hunter director Mickey Reece never considered a move to Hollywood. A musician-turned-indie filmmaker, he started making at least two low-budget films a year, on average, with a cadre of friends from around Oklahoma City."I'm just hanging out with people who are into the same things as me," he says. "It's like playing in a band."Reece has a wonderful way with understatement. His hangouts have produced a catalogue of films now gaining attention from revered film festivals like Fantasia Fest, Fantastic Fest, and Nashville — as well as TIFF Midnight Madness.ce has done everything outside of the Hollywood system since starting as a filmmaker in 2008, he hasn't encountered anyone along the way to reject him. Family responsibilities kept him in Oklahoma City, so he never considered a move to Los Angeles or New York. Instead, he relies on a loyal, talented cadre of actors, none of them big names, who gather together to make movies on a shoestring. They showed their movies at music venues, then at the Oklahoma Contemporary. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode, Jeff sits down with Jeremiah Davis-Artistic Director and Jennifer Scanlan-Exhibitions & Curatorial Director at Oklahoma Contemporary. We begin the conversation with information about Oklahoma Contemporary and what their mission is and what they offer the public. Oklahoma Contemporary encourages artistic expression in all its forms through education and exhibitions, and their vision is to endeavor to instill in the public a lifetime appreciation of the arts and enthusiasm for creative practice. Throughout the year, Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center enriches the lives of tens of thousands of people, young and old.......from budding artists to seasoned creators, many of whom might not otherwise receive this exposure. They offer a variety of classes and workshops for adults and children six days a week in the arts of painting, pottery, weaving and more. We continue as they both emphasize the fact that they see themselves as a "crossroads of art, expression, and creativity." After that, Jennifer and Jeremiah both share information about their new facility at 11th and Broadway and that they plan to open the new building fully in the Fall of 2019, and Jennifer speaks about the fact that they do have some exhibitions in place at the new facility and have done so for some time. We hear from them that they are very excited to bring all of their exhibits and programs closer to the downtown area as there is so much growth and so many exciting things happening in the downtown area. We then transition into hearing from them about their upcoming exhibit, which opens on Thursday, October 5th and is called Not For Sale: Graffiti Culture in Oklahoma. This will be a group art show and will feature 10 artists who have been an integral part of the Oklahoma graffiti scene. Artists will paint their pieces directly on the walls of the gallery, transforming Oklahoma Contemporary into an amazing display of styles. These artists are part of a culture that promotes creative expression to individuals who have not always had access to the art world. Jeremiah and Jennifer both share an overview of how the idea of this exhibit came into being and also give us a very detailed overview about the exhibit itself. They both speak to the importance of how this exhibit gave them an opportunity to do a lot of outreach to various community organizations to get their input and how that will hopefully lead to more collaboration between all of them for the good of all. After that, we then discuss the evolution of graffiti throughout history and over the last 40 years and how they are really focusing on the aspects of this art form and the values that bring people together and help people change their lives for the better. They explain that graffiti is one of the four elements of hip-hop culture and speak to how their programming associated with this exhibit will be focused on the other three elements as well. We talk briefly about examples of other outdoor areas in OKC that are featuring similar types of this art form. We then hear from them about how all of the artists featured in this exhibit are all from Oklahoma originally and how this particular exhibit may very well be the first one with graffiti-based art being painted directly on the indoor walls to be exhibited in this particular manner. We wrap up this segment hearing about all of the various programs that are planned around this exhibit over the next couple of months.
