From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here. The River Connects Us Jim Voegeli of Rochester visited to Winona Arts Center recently to see the opening of a photography and poetry exhibition entitled “The River Connects Us.” Retired environmental engineer Pete Mutschler spent six years taking photographs along the full length of the Mississippi River, and for the past two years retired state demographer and poet Tom Gillaspy has written poems to pair with the photographs. The resulting 26 images and poems are on display through March 2 at the Winona Arts Center, which is open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. Voegeli appreciated both artistic halves of the exhibit. He says the enlarged photographs, encompassing all types of transportation along the river, “looked almost like paintings.” The title has a dual meaning.Jim says: The river does just physically connect all of these photos together and poems. But as Peter said in the reception, the people that he met along the way, all the way up and down the Mississippi were such nice, friendly people that the meaning also has to do with all the people that live along the river, that we're all connected together.— Jim VoegeliIn June, the exhibit will be on view at the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center (also known as Freedom Park) in Prescott, Wis. View the ongoing project at theriverconnectsus.org. A daughter sings her love for her father Delta Rae Giordano is an actor and teaching artist based in Falcon Heights. She recommends the show “Loudly, Clearly, Beautifully.” Elena Glass wrote and performs this show about her father, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when she was 14. The show includes original music by Twin Cities duet The Champagne Drops. It runs Jan. 24 through Jan. 31 at the Hive Collaborative in St. Paul. Delta says: I'm really interested to see how Elena is going to talk about this, present it to an audience, and create art out of something that's, you know, a really sad personal loss. But from the description that she has on her event information, it sounds like she really wanted to let people know about this wonderful relationship she had with her dad, and probably some wisdom that he imparted. It's directed by Allison Vincent, who is a very well known local performer and theater maker. She actually did a show about [losing] her own father that was just performed at the fringe last summer.— Delta Rae GiordanoHigh school thespians' 35 minutes to shine Georgette Jones is an arts educator and advocate in Watson and she is excited to enter the competition season for the Minnesota State High School League one-act plays. From Pipestone to Mora, Detroit Lakes to Mountain Lake, each competing school has 35 minutes or less to shine with a play of their choosing, and Jones says the styles of show vary from comedy to drama to everything in between. The subsection tournaments begin today across the state. Find your nearest host school here. They competition culminates in a state festival held at the O'Shaughnessy at St Catherine University in St. Paul on Feb. 6 and Feb. 7. Georgette says: Some of these schools are coming from well-funded programs with huge, wonderful facilities. And some of these schools have a stage at the end of a gym and a volunteer director. And yet, the quality of student acting and performance and different theater making criteria is just amazing. Every year, I never cease to be surprised by what I see on a stage at a one act play festival.— Georgette Jones

Simultaneously, Peter, a devoted Jew, has a vision that challenges his deeply held beliefs about purity and the Gentile world. When these two men meet, it is more than a clash of cultures; it's a divine appointment that redefines the scope of God's kingdom. Peter proclaims the gospel, and the Holy Spirit falls upon Cornelius and his household, erasing all distinctions between Jew and Gentile.Study NotesOverview:Introduction to Cornelius:Cornelius is a centurion in the Italian Regiment, living in Caesarea, a Gentile city. Despite being a Gentile, he is described as devout and God-fearing, known for his generosity and regular prayers.Cornelius receives a vision from an angel of God instructing him to send for Peter, who is staying in Joppa.Cornelius Calls for Peter:Cornelius obeys the vision and sends two of his servants and a devout soldier to Joppa to find Peter.Peter's Vision:As Cornelius's men are on their way to Joppa, Peter has a vision of a sheet descending from heaven, filled with all kinds of animals, both clean and unclean according to Jewish dietary laws.A voice tells Peter to kill and eat the animals, but Peter objects, having never eaten anything impure or unclean. The voice responds, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean." This happens three times, emphasizing the importance of the message. Peter is left wondering about the vision's meaning when Cornelius's men arrive.Peter's Obedience:The Holy Spirit instructs Peter to go with the men without hesitation. Peter meets them and learns about Cornelius's vision.Key Themes:God's Impartial Love: The visions given to Cornelius and Peter illustrate that God's love and salvation are available to all people, regardless of their cultural or religious background.Breaking Barriers: Peter's vision challenges the deeply entrenched Jewish beliefs about purity and the separation from Gentiles. God is making it clear that the old divisions are no longer valid in the new covenant.Application:Inclusiveness of the Gospel: We are reminded that the gospel is for everyone, and we should not let cultural or societal barriers prevent us from sharing God's love.Obedience to God's Call: Both Cornelius and Peter show obedience to God's direction, even when it challenges their understanding. We, too, should be open to God's leading, even when it takes us out of our comfort zones.Seeking God: Cornelius is an example of a true seeker of God, illustrating that God will make Himself known to those who earnestly seek Him.For further reflection, download our study notes and questions from our website or the Patreon Page.Support the showJeremy McCandless is creating podcasts and devotional resources | PatreonHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

How many times do I have to tell WKXL NOT to leave me alone in the studio? Oh well. We are fast approaching the end of June and that means that theaters are gearing up for opening nights!!! And so I take a look at some of the plays that just opened or will be opening shortly like Jersey Boys at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse, A Night of One Acts and Opera at the Pittsfield Players. I also talk about my disappointment with the recent Frankie Valli concert that my wife and I attended at Mohegan Sun as well as give a (somewhat) review of tKapow's recent show “Paradise Now” at the Bank of NH Stage and Concord's Market Days comes up and I may have veered somewhat off track at a point or two as I fell into a couple of rabbit holes, but, hey, that's just the way we roll!!!

Oftentimes, God loves to work with small people, small starts, and tiny encounters. Join Sharon and Nicole as they discuss Philip's one encounter with one man that led, eventually, to Christianity flourishing in Ethiopia. We don't have to have a whole lot to do a whole lot for the living God who works within us. He enjoys working with small. And He can turn small into HUGE anytime He chooses! Let's finish our series on the early church with a look at how God did exactly that and be challenged to go and do the same, today. In the second episode, hosts David Rigano and Mark-Eugene Garcia introduce the latest work of a favorite playwright and friend, Matthew McLachlan. Matthew's newest publication, "Another Collection of One Acts and More Things You May or May Not Enjoy," explores a wide range of tones and topics, from the lighthearted to the profound. The anthology presents candid theater material that delves into issues like toxic masculinity, explores the anxieties of the mind, and humorously tackles themes of love and friendships. Whether evoking tears or laughter, these brief one-acts and monologues capture the things we often hesitate to express but must confront. The episode includes an interview with Matthew, who brings along some of his favorite actors to perform excerpts from the book. Christ loves the Church! Think about that. And if Jesus loves the Church, we are to LOVE the church and actively be part of it! In this beginning message of 2024, Pastor Joey discusses the launch of the Church at Pentecost and how Acts 1:8 fits into the expansion of the Church. The Gospel and The Church are intricately linked. At the conclusion of this message, we talk about the future of ParkerDC as we expand missions, small groups, and explore the building of a Community Park to outreach more to this community. Message preached on Sunday, January 7, 2024.

"If you don't know history, then you don't know anything. You are a leaf that doesn't know it is part of a tree." - Michael Crichton When we read the disciples' first encounter of the Holy Spirit in Act 2 we might be tempted to think that this is the first time the Spirit shows up. We would be mistaken. Today on the podcast, Chris takes us through a brief history of the Holy Spirit to show His actions and the images used to describe the Spirit from the very beginning up until today. What are you going to do with the good news of Jesus? The Book of Acts, Chapter 28 fcc-online.org/messages
Aaron Cochrell | Missions Emphasis (AM)
Part of following Jesus involves living a life that withstands persecution. In chapter 12 of Acts, Peter is imprisoned and we see the church begin to earnestly pray. That begs the question...what is earnest prayer? As we investigate the church's response to Peter's imprisonment we see an important lesson about earnest prayer and resisting God. ACTS: What Makes Us Who We Are? In 2022 we began a verse-by-verse study through the New Testament Book of Acts. This book records for us the acts of the apostles after the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the formation of the first church. Going through the Book of Acts will help us identify what makes us who we are and helps us chart our course forward.

If you're interested in the intersection of art and politics… consider these one-act plays! In Restless Night, two college students debate the virtues of creating art or abandoning it all to become a political activist -– both coming close to understanding each other, though not seeing eye to eye. A Hell of Her Own delves into similar questions: is rebellion more virtuous than being… well, virtuous? Women are at the center of these two beautiful, thoughtful slices of life – and both have the exact same breakdown of actors to make doubling easy.ExpandTheCanon.combit.ly/HedgepigMembershipsThis episode is hosted by Emily Lyon and Skye Pagon, and the scene is performed by Dorothea Gloria and Elizabeth Roberts.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/this-is-a-classic-the-expand-the-canon-theatre-podcast/donations
