ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has urged supporters to remain loyal to the party even when it disappoints them, in the same way Kaizer Chiefs fans stand by their team through defeats. “Kaizer Chiefs supporters don't abandon their team when it is beaten,” Mbalula said during a door-to-door campaign in ward 24 at Freedom Park in Soweto before a by-election set for May 14. “Even if they lost yesterday, the fans still have hope. What I love about Chiefs supporters is their loyalty. They're resolute. You [ANC supporters] must be the same. We will fix it [ANC].” Mbalula, known for controversial speeches, told residents the ANC is committed to rebuilding and delivering change where it governs. “We must work for the people. Where we govern, things must change. It must be visible that the ANC is in charge and we are making progress.” The campaign comes at a crucial time for the party, which lost its majority in the 2024 general elections after three decades of dominance. Warning about what he called external threats to its survival, Mbalula rallied supporters to defend the ANC at the polls. “We must defend this freedom. It's tough out there, the enemy is after us. If there is no ANC, who will defend us? The enemy wants to destroy the ANC. Let's show them on May 14 we're not going anywhere.” The by-election is one of several tests of the ANC's grassroots support as it battles to reclaim lost ground in municipalities in Gauteng.

From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here. The River Connects Us Jim Voegeli of Rochester visited to Winona Arts Center recently to see the opening of a photography and poetry exhibition entitled “The River Connects Us.” Retired environmental engineer Pete Mutschler spent six years taking photographs along the full length of the Mississippi River, and for the past two years retired state demographer and poet Tom Gillaspy has written poems to pair with the photographs. The resulting 26 images and poems are on display through March 2 at the Winona Arts Center, which is open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. Voegeli appreciated both artistic halves of the exhibit. He says the enlarged photographs, encompassing all types of transportation along the river, “looked almost like paintings.” The title has a dual meaning.Jim says: The river does just physically connect all of these photos together and poems. But as Peter said in the reception, the people that he met along the way, all the way up and down the Mississippi were such nice, friendly people that the meaning also has to do with all the people that live along the river, that we're all connected together.— Jim VoegeliIn June, the exhibit will be on view at the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center (also known as Freedom Park) in Prescott, Wis. The show includes original music by Twin Cities duet The Champagne Drops. It runs Jan. 24 through Jan. 31 at the Hive Collaborative in St. Paul. Delta says: I'm really interested to see how Elena is going to talk about this, present it to an audience, and create art out of something that's, you know, a really sad personal loss. But from the description that she has on her event information, it sounds like she really wanted to let people know about this wonderful relationship she had with her dad, and probably some wisdom that he imparted. FlingGolf is described as a blend of lacrosse and golf that offers “a fresh and engaging experience for players of all levels.” FlingGolf is played on a golf course and can be played alongside those playing traditional golf. Those passing through might think she's the town character, but in fact, Carolyn Rader is the mayor. Finishing out her fifth—and final—term as mayor, Rader calls herself “unapologetically patriotic.” The city's motto is “Ripley Believes,” and Rader believes Ripley is the most patriotic small city in America. Their oldest and largest parade has made Ripley home to “America's Largest Small Town Independence Day.” The patriotic small town is also home to Cedar Lakes Conference Center, which hosts the annual Mountain State Art and Crafts Fair. The city also is in the process of developing a new city park which will be called, of course, Freedom Park. America's most patriotic small town has always gracefully balanced tradition with change. Located on the Ohio River along main interstate arteries, the 192-year-old city has had no choice but to welcome new people, new industries, and new ideas. The subject of where to get the best pie in Minnesota is controversial. There's a squabble between those who love Betty's Pies on the north shore and the pies made by The Rustic Inn. The Aroma Pie Shop in Whalen along the Root River Trail has a lot of fans. But perhaps the city of Braham has everyone beat. Back in 1990, former Minnesota Governor Rudy Perpich weighed in when he named the town of Braham, an hour north of St. Paul, the Homemade Pie Capital of Minnesota. Braham Pie Day began that year and it's the latest in our series highlighting summer festivals around the state. This Friday, volunteers will serve somewhere around 700 pies in Freedom Park along Main Street. There are other events planned too — a car show, a quilt show, and a performance by the Pie-Alluia chorus — to name a few. Pie Day entertainment coordinator Marie Grundberg joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer with more on how you can celebrate.
