This episode started as a simple Q&A, but it turned into something a little more real.We talk about workouts, macros, and what actually works as our bodies change through different seasons of life, especially for women navigating their 40s, 50s, and beyond. But underneath all of that, this conversation is really about something else.Momentum.I share why so many of us feel stuck even when we know what to do, why motivation isn't something you go out and find, and how the smallest actions are often the thing that changes everything. We also get into how life gets busy, how we slowly stop showing up for ourselves, and why the seasons where you feel like you don't have time are usually the ones where it matters most. There's some practicality here, workouts, splits, macros, all the things, but also a lot of real life. Because the truth is, this isn't just about fitness. It's about learning how to come back to yourself, again and again. We talk about:Why motivation isn't something you find and what actually works insteadHow to rebuild momentum when life feels overwhelmingRealistic workout expectations as your body changes with ageSimple workout structures for busy womenThe truth about calorie deficits, macros, and sustainable fat lossWhy the scale doesn't always tell the full storyLearning to work with your body instead of against itThis one is part Q&A, part life check-in, and part reminder that you don't need to overhaul your entire life to start feeling better again. You just need to start. If you've been feeling stuck, inconsistent, or like you've lost your rhythm, this is for you.And if you're in a season where everything else feels more important than taking care of yourself, consider this your gentle nudge. You matter too.Need help in perimenopause? Check out the Evolve Community at http://evolve.geekpsychology.comI've lived in Japan for 20 years. Been married for 10.And I only applied for permanent residency last year. Not because I didn't care. Because it felt annoying. Paperwork. Essays. Multiple city offices that don't talk to each other. It was easier to just… not deal with it.Until the price went up a hundred-fold. And the process ballooned from months to two years.Avoidance always feels harmless. Until it doesn't.Here's what I've learned: when we say "I just don't care enough to try," we're usually lying to ourselves. What we really mean is, "I'm afraid of failing at this — and if I fail, that means I am a failure."That's the trap. We think not trying keeps us safe. But it doesn't. It just keeps us stuck.I used to wait for motivation to arrive before I'd start something. I thought alignment should come first. Meaning should come first. But life doesn't work that way. Most meaningful things start out feeling neutral. Or inconvenient. Or a little annoying. The motivation comes after you start. You see progress. You see it's working. And the energy builds on itself. So how do you actually take action?Stop trying to eliminate the discomfort. You can't. Instead, stack the other side of the scale.Write down what matters to you. Then write 10 to 25 reasons succeeding would improve your life emotionally, relationally, practically. Then write 10 to 25 consequences of not doing it. What disappears? What freedom do you lose? Now imagine both futures. Really see them. You're not eliminating fear. You're just making the pull of the future stronger than the weight of the discomfort. And here's the thing: once you start moving, new possibilities show up. Doors you couldn't see before. Connections. Ideas. You teach yourself that you can do hard things even when you don't feel like it.Especially when you don't feel like it.The real tragedy isn't failure. Failure's just feedback. The real tragedy is reaching the end and realizing you never tried.I'd rather fail gloriously than spend my whole life wondering what could have happened if I actually played the game.00:00 Why You Feel Detached01:06 Motivation Follows Action03:28 Avoidance and INFP Weak Spots06:07 Reconnect Action to Values08:53 Align Your Inner Characters

She is also the New York Times bestselling author of Dopamine Nation and the upcoming Radical SurrenderShe has served on the boards of several state and national addiction-focused organizations, and has testified before the United States House of Representatives and Senate. But even with all of her knowledge, she will share with you: she also falls into the same traps you do!In this episode, Dr. Lembke explains the truth most people don't understand: Modern life has trained your brain to chase constant dopamine hits, and that's why motivation, focus, and joy feel harder than ever. But here's the good news: you can reset your brain. Dr. Lembke walks you through the science of dopamine, pain, pleasure, and motivation, and shares a practical protocol for rebuilding focus, energy, and self-control in a world designed to hijack your attention. In this episode, you'll learn: -The “pleasure–pain seesaw” that explains why you keep reaching for the thing you swear you're done with -How dopamine really works (and why chasing pleasure backfires) -The hidden reason scrolling, snacking, and multitasking make you feel worse, not better -The simple but powerful way to rebalance pleasure and pain -What to do when you feel stuck in compulsive habits you “can't quit”  This is not a conversation about shame, addiction labels, or self-control. It's about taking your brain back. If you want more energy, clarity, and motivation, and if you're ready to stop fighting yourself and start working with your brain, this episode is for you. For more resources related to today's episode, click here for the podcast episode page.   If you liked the episode, check out this one next: How to Create a Successful Mindset: The Science of Passion and PerseveranceConnect with Mel:   Order Mel's new product, Pure Genius ProteinGet Mel's newsletter, packed with tools, coaching, and inspiration.Get Mel's #1 bestselling book, The Let Them TheoryWatch the episodes on YouTubeFollow Mel on Instagram The Mel Robbins Podcast InstagramMel's TikTok Subscribe to SiriusXM Podcasts+ to listen to new episodes ad-freeDisclaimer Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Have you ever had one of those days where you're doing everything you're “supposed” to do to get motivated… and you still end up frozen, spiraling, or pushing yourself so hard you're exhausted before you even begin? If you're an ADHD woman, that isn't a character flaw. It's conditioning. It's survival mode. And honestly? It's one of the biggest reasons so many of us stay stuck in overwhelm and burnout. In this episode, we'll unpack why traditional motivation strategies — willpower, urgency, shame, fear, or trying to be “consistent” — backfire for ADHD brains. These approaches don't support our wiring; they fight against it. Then I walk you through four ADHD-friendly ways to actually get motivated without relying on panic, pressure, or self-judgment. You'll learn how to work with your natural tendencies, match tasks to your energy, make things interesting, and regulate your nervous system so you can start from a place of safety instead of stress. By the end, you'll understand the real science behind ADHD motivation and have simple, doable tools to support yourself with more compassion and far fewer consequences. Mentioned in the episode:

Ever notice how you can get excited about something in the beginning, but then totally lose steam? You start a new meditation practice, promise yourself you'll speak more kindly to your partner, or commit to exercising. At first, you feel that spark. But then life gets busy, the excitement fades, and suddenly your motivation's gone. Here's the problem: what you do to get motivated isn't what you do to stay motivated. It's like lighting a campfire. You use kindling to get it going, but you need bigger and bigger sticks and finally logs to keep it burning. If you just keep tossing kindling on, the fire fizzles out. But if you toss a log on too soon, you'll smash those tiny embers. Today I'm going to show you what the research says about how to get motivated in the first place and, just as importantly, how to stay motivated over the long haul in all areas of your life, from your personal growth to your relationships.____________________________ Full blog and show notes: https://abbymedcalf.com/get-and-stay-motivatedDownload the Motivation Map Now: https://abbymedcalf.com/motivation-map Join my online community, One Love Collective, on Substack: https://abbymedcalf.com/substack. Send us a textWhat happens when you're a leader but you've lost your motivation? It's hard to get momentum back when you've taken time off, or things are tough in your business. Suddenly, the challenges of moving your business forward seem insurmountable; what if you stay stuck? What happens to your company? Your family? Seriously though, how do you find your mojo again so you can be the leader you were meant to be? Any ideas? I have a few. If I can get unstuck, you can too. Let's find our mojo together. In this episode, I shareHow to spot “productive hiding” (inbox zero, busywork, perfecting tasks) vs. real restThe two WHYs: why you're stuck (not helpful) vs. why your work matters (the one that moves you)A simple motivation reset: declare it → reconnect to your big WHY → take one tiny, brave action“Future You” tactics for energy: sleep, food, movement, hydration, and support that match your next-level selfFast ways to create upward momentum: micro-steps, accountability, collaboration, celebrating small winsThis episode at a glance:[00:04:41] This conversation is not about go, fight, win, get it done, make it happen, crush it, hustle. It's about clearing the path for yourself when you have big dreams and desires and, for whatever reason, you're not moving. [00:06:29] If you have discovered that you're stuck. It's okay. You're stuck. Good. Now we can do something about it.[00:11:03] It's coming from past history and fear. And it's difficult to create, much less get moving when you're in that head space. You're stuck in the past.[00:15:15]  So just do something.  Taking rapid messy action is what starts the wheels of motivation and momentum turning again for me.Resources and Links:Watch my all-time favorite series, Parks and RecreationMurakami ExhibitIsraelmore AyivorJekyll and HydeDowntown AbbeyWant to increase revenue and impact? And so has Jordan Syatt, my guest on today's episode of Goals, Grit & Some Woo Woo Shit. Jordan's one of the realest, no-BS voices in the fitness world—he's trained Gary Vee, competed as a powerlifter, and is currently parenting two toddlers while running his business and still finding time to deadlift and draw penises on whiteboards (for educational purposes, obviously). In this episode, we dive headfirst into the real reason people don't stick with their fitness goals. Spoiler alert: it's not seed oils. It's not the government. It's not even your metabolism. It's your mindset…and Jordan calls us out in the best possible way.We also unpack how fear can actually be a super underrated motivator. I even pushed back on this at first… until I realized I've literally written an exercise in my book that's all about visualizing your worst-case scenario to spark change. Touché, Jordan. We also talk aboutWhy you don't need to love exercise (or be perfect at it!) to do it anywayHow the menopause “wellness” industry is profiting off your confusionThe real difference between training for health vs. training for a six-packThe bullshit of “your body is your business card” and how we can be honest about body fluctuations, even in the spotlightAnd honestly? This convo made me want to throw my kid in the air (safely), get some fresh air, and re-evaluate the fitness fear-based stories I still carry. What's Inside:The single biggest mindset block that sabotages most people's health goalsHow fear can kickstart motivation (and why that's not a bad thing!)Why the menopause fitness industry is full of expensive nonsenseThe difference between training for health and chasing an Instagram bodySo tell me—what's been keeping you stuck lately? Is it that all-or-nothing mindset? Perfectionism in disguise? Waiting to “want to” move your body? You're not alone…and this episode might be the kick you need. Come tell me what resonated most over on Instagram. The power of low anchoring in negotiations helps uncover seller motivation quickly, allowing for better pricing discussions and more efficient deal-making. Building trust and rapport with sellers is more important than price. Sellers will often choose a lower offer from someone they trust over a higher offer from an unknown buyer.
