We premiere a track from techno legend today, Paul Birken. Birken has put together an analogue techno bomb for Gombocs first release on wax. Paul Birken has been putting out wonky techno classic's for the best part of 25 years. Release's such as ‘Speaker Freakin” & ‘Surfin' Superior' helped launch his 12 inches into the hands of some of techno's most coveted and technical DJ's. Paul still receives heavy support from the likes of Sunil Sharpe, Jerome Hill & Bas Mooy. More recent releases on ‘Mord', ‘Earwiggle' & ‘Don't' have helped solidify Birken's name to a newer generation. Birken still holds down his classic style of hectic, machine driven style of bleep techno. This release marks the first release on 12 inch, for Argentinian label, Gomboc. The label have been throwing out, high octane techno since 2017 and have been home to artists such as Lars Huismann, Nico Moreno, Umwelt, D. Carbone, Joe Farr, Takaaki Itoh, Lag & more. Birken shares the release with some of techno's most influential names for the Gombocs first vinyl release. The release will be home to Thomas P. Heckmann, Jerome Hill, Martyn Hare & Paul Birken himself. “Four legendary artists that influenced not only us but probably thousands of people. With their own signature sound, each track resembles a unique style. From Acid, to Rave and just pure machinery communication.” Birken's track, Poaching Pickled Parcels, is a distorted piece of machine paradise. Screaming synths lye at the forefront of the track while a pounding a kick drum does its damage. The track is complete with shuffling analogue percussion that simmers in and out of sections of the track. A true hectic piece of hectic dance music, from the king of mayhem. To coincide with the 500th episode of Canadian radio host and dedicated vinyl collector Trevor Wilkes has compiled a 15 track compilation in respect of the artists who feed his inspiration to broadcast weekly and relentlessly for the last 17 years. Since 2003 Trevor Wilkes has been committedly streaming weekly from his techno bunker in Canada - connecting with the European techno scene through mixing his collection of gritty four four. Taking lead from the school of techno set out by Cristian Vogel, Neil Landstrumm and their peers Bleep Radio has been a foundational stronghold for supporting and celebrating wonky techno and its diverging parts with a clear focus on off-kilter, ruff around the edges and hard hitting records. His support for this sound has brought him over to the UK frequently appearing on lineups for Jerome Hill’s institutional 'Don’t' parties. “This release isn't just a milestone, it’s an open love letter to all of you whose music I play and will continue to play and support.” - Trevor Wilkes. Sane, Jerome Hill, Johan Platt, Ben Pest, Norman Müller, Luke’s Anger, Tobias Schmidt, Neil Landstrumm, TSR Feat. Kosmonaut J, JoeFarr, Paul Birken, SES, Tobias Schmidt, Joseph Garber and World News all form the line up for this release sharing previously unreleased tracks. Today, however, we're delighted to to premiere a track from one of the UK's finest producers and mostly highly regarded sound engineers, Joe Farr. The User Experience head honcho contributes his mysterious, dark and thumping track 'To See Her' to this really special Various Artist compilation. Fans of VCV Rack and Voltage Modular will be all over the name VULT, but it's also making its name known for both hardware modular gear as well as nifty DSP trickery. Created by Leonardo Laguna Ruiz, Vult produces some of the best virtual modules I've tried, and is branching out into hardware modules and even DSP programming languages. And, of course, this amazing body of work is coming from an equally amazing guy. Leonardo is one of those pan-continental, pan-discipline people that will make you love the modern world. Leveraging a love of recording technology with an education in electrical engineering, he is one of those guys that thinks in differential equations. His passion is in modeling, and his work shows it: the filters, oscillators and other devices that he's created are fabulous examples of math-in-audio at its best. In our chat, we talk about the modules, the language, hardware developments and Leonardo's beginning story. The whole thing is inspiring, and it'll make you want to crack those books again. Enjoy! In the introduction of the podcast, I mention the opportunity to support Paul Birken's upcoming 'zine release. If you are interested, you can check out the first edition here, find out more on Facebook, or touch base with him at tonewrecker@gmail.com. Support the 'zine cause!

The campaign runs through December 11th - please help out the podcast: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/823319547/mic-pre-update-for-art-music-technology Paul Birken's name has come up in a few previous podcasts - he was one of the people pushing the techno envelope in the widespread and influential Midwest techno scene. He's still working his ass off; according to him, music remains an 'everyday practice' for him. And his output would back that up, between the massive amount of work available on his Bandcamp site and all of the live tracks he has on the Tonewrecker Soundcloud site, he remains one of the hardest working guys in electronic music. But the interesting thing is that he balances this all with a job and a family - he's been vocal about not needing (or even necessarily wanting) to be a full-time musician. How can this be? Well, he's got some unique insights about musicianship that are quite interesting and inspiring, and I'll have to say that I now have a broader vision of what a creative life can look like. We also took the chance to stroll down Vintage Gear Lane, covering everything from old Kawai sequencers to Sequential Circuits samples. And how you travel to gigs when you are hardware focused. And how you don't take crazily-valuable vintage gear on the road. The reality of life for a techno performan (not DJ) means some compromise - while still maintaining a purity of purpose. Enjoy!
