Welcome to the inaugural episode of Grape Expectations, an immersive, 5-week-long, Rashomon-style series about the amazing band Moby Grape, featuring all three living band members and their biographer. There is no crazier story in the history of music than that of The Grape. It includes disastrous tours, lawsuits, police busts, horribly nefarious managers, a fake touring version of the band, mysterious black magic witches, drug-induced madness, insane asylums, and attempted murder with an axe. And, no joke—that's just within the band's first two years. The first episode features Moby Grape and Skip Spence biographer Cam Cobb talking about Skip's dizzying years leading up to the formation of Moby Grape! Here's just a few of the many things that Cam discusses with Discograffiti in Part 1 of this podcast:Skip's wandering childhood;Coming up with Billy Dean Andrus in the South Bay folk scene; His first (little-known) acid trip; The truth behind the wild legend of Skip passing through both Quicksilver and Jefferson Airplane in literally one afternoon;Skip's initial songwriting efforts; And his whirlwind 10-month tenure in The Airplane!Listen: linktr.ee/discograffitiI support a wife and a six-year-old son with Discograffiti as my sole source of income. Editor - Peggy Tachdjian, ACE MONSTERS editor Peggy Tachdjian will tell you that, in the world of television, few things are more daunting than delivering a true crime story that is both gripping and respectful. Her work on the second season of the Netflix series delves deep into the infamous tale of the Menendez brothers, weaving in elements of humor, trauma, and the complexities of the human condition. Peggy gives us an insider's perspective on this challenging editing journey, her working relationship with co-creator Ryan Murphy, and the emotional landscape navigated throughout the project. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is the second season of the American biographical crime drama anthology television series Monster, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan for Netflix. The season centers on the 1989 parricides of José (Javier Bardem) and Kitty Menendez (Chloë Sevigny), who were killed by their sons, Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch). It incorporates the Rashomon effect by presenting the story from multiple perspectives, with the brothers' viewpoint serving as the central narrative. PEGGY TACHDJIAN, ACE An Emmy Award-winning Lebanese-American film and television editor, most recently Peggy was nominated for an Emmy for her work on the Hulu comedy series Only Murders in the Building. With over 20 years' experience editing across multiple formats and genres, Peggy began her career in documentary and unscripted before transitioning to scripted television and film. Some of her recent credits include Shrinking on Apple TV+, FX's American Horror Story, the Netflix hit Ratched, and the musical feature The Prom, starring Meryl Streep. She has also worked on many beloved reality shows like Project Runway, RuPaul's Drag Race, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and Born This Way, for which she earned four Primetime Emmy nominations for editing. In 2006 she won a Daytime Emmy for her work on NBC's Starting Over. “Why We Tell Stories” is a discussion between Greg Hurwitz & Jonathan Pageau which took place on January 31, 2025. Over the course of their discussion with each other and with the students, they field questions about the artistic process; about the public attention they've received for their work; about the lessons they've learned; and about their impression of Ralston College and its place in a broader context of cultural and educational renewal.

You may know Scott Derrickson as one of the best genre directors around, thanks to “The Black Phone,” “Doctor Strange,” and “Sinister”; what you might not know is that he's a literal Akira Kurosawa scholar. So this week, he joins us to discuss one of the master's most influential films, “Rashomon” — as well as Scott's new movie “The Gorge,” which is out Friday on Apple TV+.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Welcome to an At The Flicks pop up review show. Listeners will know that the best way to annoy Jeff is to make him watch a subtitled film. And that's exactly what we do here. While there were legitimate reasons for picking this feature, upsetting Jeff is always an added bonus. The film in question, Declan's suggestion. Is director Hirokazu Koreeda's follow up to Shoplifters called Monster. No, this is not a horror film (at least not in the conventional sense), it's a powerful study of prejudice, abuse and misunderstanding. In our discussion we cover: - The Rashomon film making style employed - How the different perspectives of the characters fit together to a cohesive whole - Ryuichi Sakamoto's wonderful music score (his final one). We use a very brief selection from it for our intro and outro music to the show. - What the ending means (so it is advisable to watch the film before listening to the show) - Why Dec believes this is a film we all should be watching One final comment. The film deals with domestic abuse, so it is important that you are aware of that fact before deciding to watch Monster (in part where the title comes from). If you have seen Monster please let us know what you think. As always, we are look forward to your comments. Until next time, see you At The Flicks.
Welcome to a special new podcast episode from The Film Stage. Here at the site we've long been fans of the work of Bill Morrison, who you may best know from his astounding 2016 archival documentary Dawson City: Frozen Time. The New York-based filmmaker received his first-ever Oscar nomination this year for his short film Incident, which reconstructs a 2018 police shooting in Chicago, reassembling the event and its immediate aftermath from a variety of sources, including surveillance, CCTV, dashboard, and body-worn cameras, as a synchronized split-screen montage. With the film now available to watch for free at The New Yorker, The Film Stage co-founder and host of The B-Side podcast, Dan Mecca, spoke with Morrison about the nomination, the Rashomon-influenced inception of the project, how we grasp memory over time as a series of images, and much more. Enjoy the conversation. Watch Incident here: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-new-yorker-documentary/incident-shows-how-officers-react-when-a-police-killing-is-caught-on-tape
Today, we look at watershed movies: movies that changed the culture. That became juggernauts. Where cinema was clearly changed/different AFTER the movies. These movies aren't always enjoyable still to watch. OR. . .they were so big, it's hard to enjoy them as movies. They have become markers on the road of cinema. Yet some still offer up endless joys. While others have not aged well at all. We look at everything from 1915's Birth of a Nation to Citizen Kane, Rashomon, Star Wars, Pulp Fiction, Barbie, and many in between. Founder.programmer Craig Hammill riffs across these movies trying to figure out what it means to be a watershed movie. And if such movies can ever be made again in today's fractured, niche, scattered entertainment landscape.

Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of She's A Small Wonder: A Small Wonder Podcast. It's 2025 and I'm hitting the ground running with the first four episodes of Season 4. Today I covered S4E1: Divided We Stand, which aired on September 17, 1989. In this episode The men and women camp separately, who has the better survival odds? Listen to find out. Bland start to a new Season especially with it being the final Season of the show. The last two season openers gave us Season 2 Chewed Out and Season 3 Woodward and Bernstein, gave us don't miss this episode vibes, this one was major weak sauce, middle of the season filler episode. S4E2: Double Date, which aired on September 24, 1988. In this episode Jamie, Vicki and Harriet have double dates. Typical being into two places at once double date scenario. It was funny and more going on. S4E3: The Gang's All Here, which aired on October 1, 1988. In this episode, Jamie and Vicki join a gang. Speaking of the episode Chewed Out, we get Adam Rich (Eight Is Enough fame) playing a bully of the Screaming Skulls gang instead of Pete, the guy who introduces Jamie and Reggie to chewing tobacco two Seasons ago, the only different is Adam Rich's mullet has gotten longer and stringier. Gross! and the last episode S4E4: Rashomon, which aired on October 15, 1988. In this episode the Lawson's along with Brandon and Harriet are invented by the Robotics Company president to this health spa and the kids and Brandon encounter a bugler. Then we are treated to 3 different versions of what happened and then we see what really happened, thanks to Vicki. I hope you enjoy the four episodes and I'll be back in February with the next four. Have a great rest of January everyone!

Mita goes for the trifecta (foreign language, old, black and white), when tasked with picking a movie that starts with "R" and chooses Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon" for the next movie review. It's also Golden Globe night and Mita and Nadeem have some opinions.
Send us a textJUROR #2 It's late-December and, foregoing our usual Christmas-adjacent movie watch, this year TGTPTU has a very special treat for the holidays. That's right, listener, we bring to you our hot takes on what may prove to be Clint Eastwood's final film--and even more likely his final theatrically-released film--JUROR #2 (2024) in time for its MAX streaming release so that you might celebrate with us and have yourself a very Merry Clint-mas. Eastwood's latest film with Warner Brothers continues what was a trend (excepting Cry Macho and The Mule) of not starring the star of the 70's ape comedies and the Dirty Harry series, instead keeping Eastwood off camera and bringing in a murderer's row (some pun intended) of character actors, including Nicholas Hoult from multiple Bryan Singer flicks as the titular Juror #2; Toni Collette from The Sixth Sense as Assistant DA Faith Killebrew who may put her career on the line to explore whether the person she put away for murder is guilty; J.K. Simmons from Postal (and likely some other films) as a former detective on the jury who also has suspicions of innocence; Cedric Yarbrough from Reno 911! as juror out for justice; Kiefer Sutherland from multiple Joel Schumacher flicks as Juror #2's AA sponsor and lawyer confidant; and even one of Eastwood's many children--Francesca Eastwood--giving the double bird in multiple, retold scenes Rashomon-style playing the once-and-future corpse. From The Mule & Richard Jewell, cinematographer Yves Bélanger is back with Mark Mancina returning from Cry Macho for the score. And surprisingly and, as discussed, perhaps as a first for Eastwood as a director, the man who addressed an empty chair at the RNC and practices TM actually worked with the film's writer to GASP! rewrite the script, an act host Ken who has seen and reported back on every Eastwood film takes to mean Juror #2 is the 94-year-old director's swan song. And the song is good! While the hosts conflict on where the movie lands politically in its cynicism and realism, all four of the folx talking in your earholes believe the moving picture a solid mid-budget thriller that harkens back to a time/era of pre-streaming moviegoing. Speaking of an era ending, Warner Brothers appears to believe the Time of Eastwood is done, releasing this latest film from the long-time collaborator in under 50 theaters seven scheduled weeks before releasing it for streaming on MAX. So get your spoilers here, and listen to the end of the p for what starts as a rant against WB's treatment of Eastwood and becomes men complaining about previews and ads before films that eventually ends with the four hosts recapping their 2024 movie-going experiences before awarding their best films of the year. Also fun: Evidence is presented throughout by hosts Ken and Thomas for whether provisional cohost Ryan should be promoted to a full-time host. Congrats, newly fully-fledged host Ryan. Theatre, opera and film director Julie Taymor is regarded as one of the most imaginative directors and designers working today. Her stage version of the Lion King is the highest grossing show in Broadway history, having made nearly $2 billion, and it recently marked its 25th year in London. The Lion King Julie two Tony Awards, including for best director of a musical in 1997, making her the first woman to do so. Julie Taymor has told Shakespearean stories on stage and the big screen including Titus, starring Anthony Hopkins and The Tempest with Helen Mirren. Her film credits also include Frida, a biopic of painter Frida Kahlo, and the Beatles jukebox musical movie Across The Universe. She tells John Wilson how seeing Rashomon, Akira Kurosawa's 1950 film, as a teenager, was a formative cultural experience. Kurosawa's ingenious approach to narrative opened her eyes for the first time about the possibilities of innovative storytelling. She also recalls how her travels around Indonesia and Bali after graduation, and in particular, witnessing a ceremony in the isolated Balinese village of Trunyan have had a profound impact on her work as a designer and director. Julie reveals how she came up with the ground-breaking concept and some of the designs for the stage version of Disney's The Lion King. She also gives her opinion on some of the difficulties faced by the ill-fated Broadway musical Spider Man: Turn Off The Dark, on which she was co-writer and director until being replaced during its previews. The production, which featured music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge of U2, was ridden with technical and financial problems, and resulted in several legal disputes.Producer: Edwina Pitman

This week, Luke, Riley, and Chris talk news, sports, sports games, non-sports games, and geography. We start by discussing Wednesday's layoffs at Destiny developer Bungie, which saw 220 people lose their jobs and other people and teams shuffled into parent company Sony. But throughout all this upheaval, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons has managed to hang on to his classic car collection. Then, we talk about how, instead of getting a new Sonic & Mario Olympics game, we got a crummy mobile game with an NFT attached. This leads us to reflect on the Olympics games of our youths, and how bad the battery life on the Game Gear was. Next, Luke raves about Cataclismo, Riley raves about Thank Goodness You're Here, and everyone rants about why so many English town names get repeated across the world. Chris and Riley talk about their ice cream makers (ice cream showdown to come!). Last, we answer some reader questions, discussing what game genre we'd like to resurrect, how both we and our pets would do in the Olympics, fake cubes, a horrible new AI device we can't believe is real, and what the Rashomon of games would be. Bryan and Holly discuss the nuances of point of view in the totality of the Star Wars universe, from Obi-Wan's assertion that Vader killed Luke's father to the differing points of view of the Acolyte, they talk about it all. They even dive into the work of Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon and Luke in The Last Jedi.
One of the most prolific and exceptional filmmakers who ever lived, Akira Kurosawa has an anniversary for his best works. His 1954 film “Seven Samurai” has now hit its 70th anniversary this year, and its 4k restoration is soon to be in select theaters. It's a film that was voted the 20th best film of all time by prominent members of the film industry who took part in BFI's Top 225 list back in 2022. ‘Seven Samurai' followed hits in Kurosawa's filmography like “Rashomon” and “Yojimbo'... but what's led to that common sentiment? For this week's FilmWeek Feature, we reprise our retrospective for the film with LAist film critics Peter Rainer, Tim Cogshell, and Andy Klein about why Seven Samurai is essential viewing for cinephiles and all moviegoers.
