Today I talked to Mark Neocleous about his new book Pacification: Social War and the Power of Police (Verso, 2025). For more than two decades, Neocleous has been a pioneer in the radical critique of policing, security, and warfare. Today we will discuss his newest work on the theory and practice of pacification, which, he argues, is “social warfare carried out through the ideology of peace.” Pacification not only aims to counter resistance to capitalist exploitation, dispossession, and displacement, but it aims to prevent such resistance from emerging in the first place by constructing social institutions and the built environment. Pacification is a totalizing process by which states deploy social policies, symbolic practices, and coercive operations in order to produce cooperative – or at least acquiescent – subjects. However, pacification never succeeds in obscuring the antagonistic nature of capitalist social relations. Consequently, pacification becomes an endless social war for peace. Mark Neocleous is Professor of the Critique of Political Economy at Brunel University in London. His previous books include A Critical Theory of Police Power (reissued by Verso in 2021), The Politics of Immunity (Verso, 2022), and War Power, Police Power (Edinburgh 2014). As a member of the Anti-Security Collective, he co-authored the Security Abolition Manifesto, which is available at anti-security.org. Learn more about your ad choices. Dan only played 9 matches for London Welsh when he was 18 and we were playing in London North West 2, which was at Level 8 in the English rugby pyramid. Brought up in Wales, having played club rugby for Llandovery and Brecon as a Mins/Youth player; he was then was part of the Ospreys Academy and capped at Wales at u16. Ospreys didn't sign him at 18 and Dan decided to join Ealing Trailfinders academy and their Brunel University programme. It was during this programme that he came on loan to London Welsh in his first term and then went to Blackheath in that same season. He subsequently went back to Blackheath after Covid and was also sent on loan to Rosslyn Park. He now play rugby in the Championship for Cornish Pirates and loving life in Cornwall. A really interesting chat with a very mature man, who is very ambitious about his rugby. Enjoy

Anne explains how writing is dynamic and how it changes from the starting out phase to writing up; and why your literature is not a fixed entity that won't change. We also discuss the challenges of academic writing for neurodivergent scholars. In closing, Anne offers a wealth of top tips including how to find your academic voice and how to ask for the feedback that you need. In this episode, we catch up with Prof Trevor Hoey, a hydrologist based at Brunel University, London. He tells us about the various climate mechanisms driving these extreme weather events, how counterintuitively severe droughts are being caused by the same processes and he also details some of the measures we can take to minimise the damage these events cause. Dr. Tara McCormack discusses international politics and how she believes America remains the hegemonic power with it's control becoming ever more direct and overt, especially militarily. We are entering a more multipolar world, for which Syria was a watershed moment, but it will take some time. She comments on what it's like going against the narrative in academia and how many peers have "learned to stop worrying and love NATO". Post-WWII the two tracks of American hegemony were the EEC (EU) and NATO. The media is so tightly controlled preventing discussion of the true architecture of globalist power. The Western political class feel most at home in Davos and seek to remove voters from decision-making. Western elites are pushing us toward WW3. Anmol is a renowned consultant in the Trading and Investing Industry, having achieved great success through his firm, LiveTraders, established in 2015. Under his leadership, LiveTraders has earned the #1 spot in Trading Education for three consecutive years. With a rich history of leadership and appearances in Forbes and the International Business Times, Anmol continues to educate and inspire traders worldwide. In this episode, we're discussing... Start Young and Stay Curious: Anmol began his trading journey at 18, driven by curiosity about the stock market. His early start allowed him to accumulate knowledge and experience, emphasizing the importance of starting early and staying curious. Importance of a Trading Plan: Anmol stresses the need for a well-defined trading plan, including entry and exit points. Trading without a plan often leads to emotional decisions and losses. Understanding Market Volatility: Recognize that market volatility is normal and driven by human emotions of fear and greed. Long-term investors should avoid reacting to daily market fluctuations. Diversification and Risk Management: Allocate the majority of your investments to stable, long-term options like the S&P 500, and keep a smaller portion for speculative ventures. This strategy balances potential high returns with safety. Avoiding Emotional Trading: Emotional trading is a common pitfall. Having a predefined plan helps mitigate emotional decisions and keeps you on track with your investment goals. Live Trading Transparency: Live Traders offers a unique educational experience by trading live, allowing students to learn from real-time successes and mistakes, fostering a realistic understanding of trading. Airing Pain 144: Dilemmas in Pain Research This episode of Airing Pain focuses on the challenges that researchers must overcome when researching pain and developing new treatment approaches. Many questions remain unanswered in the field of pain research. For example, we might know that a treatment works for some people living with pain, but we might not know how it works or why some people benefit and some do not. So, there is a lot of research being done to try to better understand pain. This leads to another problem: how to cope with the amount of new information emerging from research and trials? It is important that new research data is made more accessible for clinicians, healthcare workers, patients, and researchers. Data is no use unless it can be assessed and summarized so that doctors can understand how to use it to benefit their patients. Our contributors for this edition are leaders in this field and they discuss some of the issues they have encountered whilst conducting their research into pain and how to treat it. The interviews were recorded at the British Pain Society's Annual Scientific Meeting, 2023. Contributors: Professor Robert Brownstone, Brain Research UK Chair of Neurosurgery, Department of Neuromuscular Diseases, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. Dr Neil O'Connell, Reader in Physiotherapy, Brunel University, Chair of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) Methods, Evidence Synthesis and Implementation Special Interest Group. He is an advisor to Pain Concern. Dr Kirsty Bannister, Neuroscientist and Associate Professor at King's College London. Time Stamps: 1:22 Paul introduces Professor Robert Brownstone, Brain Research UK Chair of Neurosurgery at University College London. 1:32 Prof. Brownstone explains what a spinal cord stimulator is, the lack of progress made with this form of treatment, the varied results the treatment gets, and why some people experience long-term pain following back surgery. 7:40 Paul talks about Cochrane, a global independent network of health practitioners, researchers, and patient advocates who review research findings to provide a more precise estimate of the effects of a treatment. 7:54 Paul introduces Dr Neil O'Connell, a Reader at Brunel University who was the Co-ordinating editor of the Cochrane Pain, Palliative and Supportive Care (PaPaS) group. 8:35 Dr O'Connell discusses how Cochrane reviews research and clinical trials, and the complexities involved in gathering and interpreting evidence when developing interventions. 17:04 Paul introduces Dr Kirsty Bannister, a neuroscientist and Associate Professor at King's College London who specialises in neuropharmacology and runs a research group that uses animals to examine the mechanisms of pain processing. 17:22 Dr Bannister talks about why animal models are useful for researching the responses people may have to different pain processes and researching chronic pain by measuring neuronal responses to pain. 21:44 Paul and Dr Bannister discuss the limitations of using animals to research chronic pain. 23:48 Paul and Dr Bannister explore why looking at a patient's experience of pain first can better inform lab research on animal models for understanding and researching pain. 30:03 Prof. Brownstone gives some advice for those considering a spinal cord stimulator as an intervention they want to try. It's often said we must understand the past to build the future, and that sentiment sits at the very heart of this episode. This week on The Internal Comms Podcast we welcome professors Michael Heller and Joe Chick, of Brunel University. Michael and Joe were recently awarded a considerable grant from the UK government to write an institutional history of the internal comms function in the UK – and they join host Katie Macaulay to discuss IC's humble beginnings and its evolution over time. Internal communications is nothing new, of course. As you'll hear, it has a rich and vibrant history, dating all the way back to the 1800s. So why this research? And why now? Through their work, Michael and Joe hope to give us IC practitioners a clearer sense of our occupational history, and in turn enhance our professional identity. For too long internal communicators have been seen as lesser than other comms professionals, and legitimising our journey to the present day is just one way we can secure our seat at the top table. Join us on a fascinating journey through the history of the profession, one we think will inspire and energise you to build the new era of IC. As always, share your thoughts of this or any other episode of The Internal Comms Podcast using the hashtag #TheICPodcast. And thanks for listening.
In this episode, we talk to Dr. Hayleigh Bosher, Associate Dean and Reader in intellectual property law at Brunel University and host of the podcast Whose Song is it Anyway?, a podcast on the intersections of IP [intellectual property] and the music industry. Hayleigh gives us some great insight into tomorrow's legal disputes over AI and music copyright. She tells us why AI can never create an original song, what it takes to sue a generative AI company for creating music in the style of someone, and why generative AI risks missing the point about what creativity is.

Episode 63 : A Clockwork Orange with John Bates Today's guest is John Bates, he has worked in various jobs at Brunel University over the last 50 or so years. To Kubrick fans, Brunel University has a special resonance. It was of course the location of the Ludovico Medical Facility where Malcolm McDowell playing Alex, had his treatment. There were in fact four areas at the University used by Kubrick; Alex's apartment ground floor lobby, where he comes home to his flat block, The Ludovico facility check-in, Alex's bedroom at the Ludovico facility, and the now iconic Ludovico Therapy Screening Room, where we see Alex bound to a chair wearing lid-locks and forced to watch violence on the big screen. John as a 16 year old school leaver at his first job at Brunel was witness to Stanley Kubrick and his team filming ‘A Clockwork Orange', and was even employed to work with Kubrick's crew. According to recycling charity Wrap, an estimated three billion nappies are thrown away every year in the UK. Concerns over plastic waste and a want to save money have been driving a rise in the popularity of reusable nappies but, as listener Amy asks, are they really better for the planet, and your pocket? Me and the team speak to Wendy Richards, also known as The Nappy Lady. She runs one of the biggest nappy advice and sales websites specialising in reusables. Crunching the numbers with her we look at the complete financial costs of both reusable and disposable nappies, even taking into consideration the extra washing costs needed to clean reusables. But what about the environmental impacts of reusable nappies. Are they really better than disposables when you factor in the energy and water used to clean them? That's what we ask Professor Rob Holdway from Brunel University and Giraffe Innovation. Giraffe Innovation recently completed a thorough study - commissioned by DEFRA, the government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs - looking at exactly this. Once again this series we're testing and investigating your suggested wonder-products, so if you've seen an ad, trend or fad, and wonder if there's any evidence to back up a claim, drop us an email to sliced.bread@bbc.co.uk or you can send us a voice note to our WhatsApp number: 07543 306807.
Welcome to Season 7 of Savvy Talk, I am excited to bring you leading voices from those shaping Dubai's cultural scene. Today we are joined by Mohanad Al Hattab, one of the most prominent and talented comic influencers in the Arab world. He finds joy and fulfillment from making people laugh, including myself. I can't count how many times he made me laugh with his characters and stories. Let's learn with someone that mastered comic timing, cultural relevance, digital platforms and storytelling. Mohanad is Syrian, but he was born and raised in the United Arab Emirates. He completed his undergraduate in marketing and management at American University of Sharjah. He then earned his master's in marketing at Brunel University. But was telling funny stories that captivated him. He began on social media by making humorous short films in English, but once he published a video in Arabic and was culturally relevant to the Middle East region, his rapid growth started. Which helped him establish his brand. More than 747,000 followers on each of the platforms, Instagram and Tiktok, consume his innovative sketches. This success made him manage to land deals with big brands such as Lay's potato chips, Deliveroo, Chiclets gum and more. He develops identities and back stories for each character, and periodically releases highly-anticipated new updates in their individual sagas. You can follow Mohanad Al Hattab on Instagram, Tiktok and Facebook. A passionate interest in personal and spiritual growth spanning many years has inspired Iona's exploration of Eastern and Western spiritual philosophies and practices, the idea of a language of angels, as a stream of inspiration, creative wisdom, and beauty, flowing through everything, the energies of sacred sites both at home and abroad, and labyrinth walking. After meditating with Tibetan Buddhists in London, then studying mindfulness with Samye Ling Wales and the Mindfulness Association, Iona finally found her spiritual home with the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids. She is also a Companion of Chalice Well, supporting the Trust's ethos of "Many Paths One Source." Exploring growth and change through her creativity, Iona's path of art and soul is inspired by angels, wisdom, nature, land, and legend, living by the sea on the south coast of magical Wales. Her beautiful poetic book “To Sing with Bards and Angels” is an invitation to travel through landscapes evoked by beautiful language, into the heart of nature and imagination. Researchers from London's Francis Crick Institute have found a type of artificial sweetener is able to dampen down immune system responses - at least in mice. Karen Vousden and Fabio Zani tell us about the implications. And Ronan McCarthy from Brunel University has found a range of different artificial sweeteners have antibacterial properties. We discuss the connections between these two areas of research and the prospect of developing drug treatments from artificial sweeteners. Penny Johnes from Bristol University discusses the use of phosphorus in agriculture, it's a key component of fertilisers, but global supplies may run out in a few years, despite this overuse of phosphorus in agriculture is also creating problems. And Chat GPT has had a makeover, a new version of the chatbot was rolled out this week. Chatbots seem to be getting a lot of press at the moment, but are they really something we will all be using in the future? Technologist and composer LJ Rich who works with the UN on artificial intelligence gives us her analysis. BBC Inside Science is produced in collaboration with the Open University.
