Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week in our final #herstory in our 2022 March series, I'm happy to welcome Black feminist researcher, writer, and curator Nydia Swaby. Nydia is a Jamaican-American and have called London home for the past decade. She has a PhD in Gender Studies (SOAS (https://www.soas.ac.uk)), an MA in Women's History [Sarah Lawrence College], and a BA in Anthropology and African American Studies [Rollins College]. Her practice builds on theories of racial, gendered, diasporic, and queer formation, Black feminism, Black studies, and my previous experience working at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. In her creative approach to knowledge production, she uses archives, ethnography, photography, film, and the imagination to curate programs and visual narratives, write essays and performance pieces exploring the gendered and diasporic dimensions of Black being and becoming. She also creates ancestral altars using family pictures and memorabilia, found photographs and archival images, West African textiles and wood carvings, crystals, fossils, stones, shells, and other curios. These practices converge in her forthcoming monograph, Amy Ashwood Garvey and the Future of Back Feminist Archives (Lawrence Wishart, Summer 2022 (https://www.nydiaswaby.com/amy-ashwood-garvey-and-the-future-of-black-feminist-archives)) and Caird Research Fellowship at The National Maritime Museum, ‘Curating Archives of Affect: Black Feminist Pasts, Presents, and Futures' (December 2021 - September 2020), and my ongoing visual series, ‘Becoming with Archive: Blackness, Gender, Diaspora (https://www.nydiaswaby.com/becoming-with-archive)' (2010 - Present). Alongside her practice-based research, Nydia work as the Curator of Learning at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, where she collaborates with academics, curators, artists, and writers to develop a multi-disciplinary, practice-based research and learning program. She is also a member of Feminist Review's Editorial Collective and the Curator of Programmes, and co-edited a recent issue on queer, feminist, diasporic, and decolonial archives. Please read on and explore the topics of interest below for a thoughtfully curated account of the many individuals discussed in the episode. Today on Sojourner Truth: Protests broke out across the United States as a secret grand jury in Louisville, Kentucky, did not charge any police officers for the March 13, 2020, killing of Breonna Taylor. Breonna was shot and killed in her own home as police officers were attempting to serve a no-knock warrant. Breonna's boyfriend thought someone was breaking into their home and fired, hitting one police officer. Officers responded with a barrage of bullets that killed Breonna and entered another apartment. Only one officer, Brett Hankison, was charged on three counts of wanted endangerment. Not for killing Breonna, but for threatening the lives of three people by firing bullets that entered their apartment during the operation. The other two officers involved, Johnathan Mattingly and Miles Cosgrove, were not charged. Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, a Black Republican praised by Donald Trump, claimed the officers were justified in their use of force. There were over 100 arrests on Wednesday night in Louisville, Kentucky, in response to this shocking ruling. Two police officers were shot, neither receiving life-threatening wounds and police have said an arrest was made. Our guests are Jody David Armour and Stephon Barbour. Jody David Armour is the Roy P. Crocker Professor of Law at the University of Southern California. Stephon Barbour is a videographer, editor, director and activist based in Louisville, Kentucky. For our weekly Earth Watch, we speak with BJ McManama about genetically engineered trees and Indigenous peoples. BJ has been involved with Indigenous and environmental issues for over 25 years. Beginning in the early 1990s working with WV State agencies on NAGPRA, opposition to mountaintop/strip coal mining & public education. Also, Sojourners Ballot Box Quiz with S. Today on Sojourner Truth: As fires continue to ravage Western U.S. states (in particular California, Oregon and Washington), smoke from the fires have traveled across the country, including to New York City. Also, as far North as Canada and as far East as Europe. The pollutants and fine particles in the air are hazardous to those exposed to it. In particular, those with underlying conditions, children and the elderly. Western states now have the worst air quality in the world. Meanwhile, Donald Trump visited California where he yet again denied global warming, including its relationship to the fires. Our guest is Dr. Robert M. Gould, a medical doctor with Physicians for Social Responsibility. As polls in swing states tighten, including in Florida, Biden and Trump are now neck-to-neck in Florida. The right of prisoners and former felons to vote has taken on new focus. In Florida, voters had approved the right of former felons to vote, but the voters' decision has been undermined again in a series of court rulings that have the impact of blocking people who have already served their time from voting. The Democratic Governor of Kentucky announced that former felons will be allowed to vote in that state, but in California, that right is still being fought for. There is a proposition on the ballot in California that would afford the right of those on parole to vote. Our guest is Dorsey Nunn, Executive Director of Legal Services for Prisoners with Children. Dorsey has over twenty-five years experience working on prison related issues. For our ongoing Campaigners for Black Lives series, we discuss gangs in the Los Angeles Sheriffs units. A federal investigation may be underway, but Black and Brown communities have known for quite some time that violent gangs exist in Sheriff's units in Black and Latinx communities. The LA Sheriff's Department is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the country. We speak with Mark Anthony, an organizer with Black Lives Matter Los Angeles. Also, our weekly Earth Minute and a brand new series, Sojourner's Ballot Box Quiz, with S. Pearl Sharp.

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! 1. Rebroadcast of March 7, 2018 show featuring: Tomye Neal-Madison, visual artist, presenting in "22nd Annual: The Art of Living Black" at the Richmond Art Center & Joshua Whitaker's (guest) Spirithaus Gallery's "Bold As Love 2018" at the West Oakland gallery through the end of the month; S.
