Greetings Glocal Citizens! Every March since launching the podcast, we dedicate the month to women - it's our Women's Herstory Month series. Closing out this year's series are excerpts from conversations over the years with Glocal Citizens working to empower, develop, support and uplift women in Africa and beyond. We'll hear social development scholar, author and facilitator, Yaliwe Clarke discussing her craft and how feminism has always been native to her being. Nana Eyeson-Akiwowo shares how her NGO, African Health Now inspired the innovative fourthphase box solving for the unspoken and overlooked needs of women postpartum. Daisry Obal tells us how her work in policy informed and inspired her to build the Oyayone Foundation dedicated to transforming Namibia one mother at a time. With a passion for building solutions that matter, Tiambi Simms, co-founder of social enterprise, SheFarms shares what her guiding question, “How are we going to feed 9.7 billion people by 2050?” means in practice. And Aissata Sidibé N'dia, president and founding member of Yelenba-Women in Action shares how their concrete actions approach has been impactful in supporting African women and girls to help themselves to improve their daily lives. Arohi Kumar has been a HERstories participant for the past several years, and in that time, Lauren has seen her confidence and happiness grow exponentially! Arohi (whose identifiers include transfemme, poly, and "bi enough") is a child of Indian immigrants, and the prevalence of male/female separation when she was growing up led to her feeling ostracized on both ends. When it came to attraction, Arohi knew she was attracted to girls, but describes the experience as wanting to be "attracted to girls in the way lesbians are attracted to girls, which is like a very specific, different thing." We debate gender roles vs. gender, and muse on why so many people (including Arohi!) came to terms with their queerness during lockdown. Plus, we talk anxiety, dissociative identity disorder, and OCD...but in a fun, quirky way, like the fun, quirky girls we are!(TW: discussion of suicidal ideation in childhood, but nothing descriptive)Speaking of fun and quirky, Arohi made a fun, quirky board game! Closing out our season 4 with Elsie Escobar from She Podcast and Libsyn's "The Feed" podcast! Elsie is a podcasting pioneer with 17 plus years as a podcaster, El Salvadoran immigrant, Co-Founder of She Podcasts with 20K members and the Director of Community and Content at Libsyn- a hosting, distribution, and monetization podcasting platform. However, she did not start out in podcasting, it came to her after being denied multiple times in Hollywood for not looking like what should be a “traditional stereotypical Latina.” Why are we deemed to all look like Jo-Lo, Selma Hayek or a ganster chola, with various degrees of accents in Hollywood! This is the lens we are still perceived in throughout many roles in our careers or have encountered here in the US, whether you're an immigrant, 1st Gen, 2nd Gen or a 3rd generation Californian-Aztlan Mexican American, like myself.  Podcasting has accelerated tremendously with the influx of technology, specifically for our community narratives and the technology that is leveraging our voices. We break down the numbers, within the Latino community of listening and to recognize the opportunity to invest in our platforms. The Latino Edison Podcasting Report shows the data, and all the receipts of what our community is listening to our podcasting.  Podcasting is leveraging many voices and narratives, but it's our own narratives, not AI, as an uninterrupted 1:1 dialoge. As Elise states in this podcast, “it's unbelievably freeing to me, to not be judged by who I DON'T look like.” More POC/women of color podcasting and our LGTBQ+ communities are moving into podcasting, to share HerStories, our ancestral narratives, and our legacy that will not be erased by AI, but will give power to new and stronger generations.  Elsie can be found on ShePodcasts, The Feed from Libsyn and her website ElsieEscobar.com. Lauren is joined by her friend and co-facilitator, Maggie Tielker (Episode 165), for an in-depth conversation with Lane Willis, whom Lauren and Maggie both know from the L.A. LGBT Center's HERstories group! Lane (they/them) is a *phenomenal* kindergarten teacher, who hopes their students will always remember them as "that one that wore the rainbow shoes." Lane knew that they "adored girls" as early as five years old, and also strongly identified with both Twiggy and Elton John. But a rushed marriage to a man at only nineteen years old quashed any chance of Lane exploring either their sexuality or their gender identity for many years. Lane shares how their involvement in an underground swinging community confirmed their long-suppressed attraction to women, and discusses how non-binary YouTubers guided them to their eventual gender epiphany at the age of fifty-two. Plus, Lane tells a story about running into a former student at Pride that will pull on even the sturdiest of heartstrings! If you're interested in any of the groups or workshops discussed during this episode, check out the L.A. Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week on the podcast, rather than one last guest rounding out our March 2023 herstories series, I went into our archives with a specific goal of putting together a salon of sorts about craft. I think of craft as how vocation, location, persistence and passion fulfill us. According to Merriam-Webster, it is skill in planning, making, or executing. I always ask this question because I feel it allows my guest to share more than what they do on a day-to-day basis for economic returns i.e. work, and gets closer to the heart of who they are and how they go about manifesting a new world. So, this week we're re-visiting with: Jamaican-American, Nydia Swaby (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/nydia-swaby) a Black feminist researcher, writer, and curator based in London about Archives, Art and Freedom Dreams; Filipino-Jamaican-American, Zee Clarke (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/zee-clarke) an author, mindfulness practitioner and racial healing professional about Healing in Breathing; Ghanaian-Afro-German, Ekua Yankah (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/ekua-yankah) a thought leader in international development on being a Polyglot, Professor, Policy Advisor and Art Patron; Ghanaian-Brit, Esther Armah (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/esther-armah) an author, journalist and entrepreneur on storytelling for structural change; Nigerian, Sarah Adeyinka (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/sarah-adeyinka) a humanitarian researcher and author on Humanitarian CoCreating; and and Detroit Native, Dereca Blackmon (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/dereca-blackmon) an inclusion innovator, speaker and spiritual activist about Uncommon Conversations. Be sure to check out full episodes using the links above, there's a wealth of valuable, craft-inspired insights from each of these audacious women! In this week's episode I talk to Ceryn Rowntree about rekindling HER stories. This episode is a fascinating consideration about the male narrative we hear throughout history. We discuss the stories we hear as young girls and the impact they have on us and how they can often be unhelpful. We discuss the HERstories that Ceryn is retelling of powerful women that have often been painted in a negative light, forgotten or stripped of their true meaning. We discuss Lilith and her powerful place in the world and Ceryn introduces us to Scota, who was introduced to me for the first time in this podcast! Everyday HERstory: Turning Pain Into Purpose with Jessica McCallop-McClellan

The celebration of Women's History Month continues, sis! While we may recognize the “big” names of women who have made their mark, everyday women are making history in the spaces they occupy. With some, it's familial history - the reversing of generational patterns or building new bridges between loved ones. For others, it's the contributions in their workplaces or in their own business. The HERstories are vast and although we may not know each one, all of them matter. Our stories emerge as we go through life's ups and downs. We have both victories and challenges. We experience the mountaintops and the valleys. But it's often in the down times where we discover our resilience and are transformed. The painful seasons help us grow; pain is part of the process, my friend. We don't look for it. We don't welcome it. Yet, it's a contributing factor to our story. If you think back to when you were in those puberty years, you likely experienced some type of growing pains. Now, I didn't ever reach a magnificent growth spurt. (I topped out at five feet by middle school.) But I recall the various pains in my body as I developed into a young woman. And as adults, pain is a part of our life and continued growth process. We can't avoid it, but we can thrive in spite of it. We can also use the pain we face as fuel to fulfill our God-given purpose. Today's guest is the prime example. Jessica McCallop-McClellan is the founder and President of Giving Hope & Help, Incorporated. Giving Hope & Help is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that supports domestic violence survivors, provides essential resources to end period poverty, offers scholarship opportunities for college bound and non-traditional students and helps cancer patients. But it was Jessica's personal experiences with sexual assault, domestic violence, academic goals and heavy menstrual cycles that led her to create Giving Hope & Help. This conversation is inspiring as Jessica shares her testimony from her past abuse, her exact “a-ha” moment, how a spiral notebook in her closet birthed her vision and more. So listen in to this Everyday HERstory and get ready to be encouraged to turn your pain into purpose, sis.

Join Lesley and her guest Jennifer Aks-Newman for a poignantly unique and empowering look at the lives of womxn. After 16 years of empowering inner-city kids through artistic expression in the NYC school system, COVID struck. Unable to be in the rooms with her kids in the way she had been for so long, Jen shares how she was filled with a longing to get back to her empowerment work, but had to find a new way. Jen tells the story of how her love of womxn and her own talents as a photographer, dancer, producer, film editor, director and coach came together to create herStories. Over the past 18 months Jen has created over 100, 3-5 min films of profound impact. Jen reveals to the listener how she works with womxn to learn their story, then leads them through the creation of a body of raw film. From there Jen applies her poignant and provocative approach to editing and synthesizes the footage into a short film that tells the subject's entire story. By helping womxn share their stories in such a vulnerable, creative, inspiring and celebratory way, they are able to walk the path of deep healing from innocence to devastation and ultimately the emancipation of Radical Self-Acceptance. Through her art, her vision, her love of womxn and her commitment to humanity, Jen is walking womxn through the abyss to a level of freedom they have never imagined. Through she and Lesley's conversation Jen shares how each of the womxn, upon viewing their personal story in its completed form, are rendered into a state of awe. Their ability to love, appreciate and revere themselves is fully restored. Jen's completely individual and inspired approach to this artistic expression is producing transformation for the womxn, the viewer, and for the people connected to the ones watching. An impact that begins with a single womxn, spreads to have impact on a global level. Due to our not being completely past the pandemic, Jen has started with virtual Gallery Viewings for small audiences. Ultimately, her vision is to create a way and means of her work becoming a traveling show, hopefully presented as uniquely as the work itself.      Jennifer Aks-Neuman, Story Producer and Embodiment Coach founded herStories in response to the pandemic as a way to help Womxn tell their stories of resilience. Jen has combined her 30+ years of movement, photography, editing, speaking and directing to curate the herStories collection. These videos are meant to educate, inspire, empower and open our hearts and minds to what is possible. Jen's mission is to shift the mindset of humanity, 1 story at a time. Brené Brown, author of Atlas of the Heart (a book we are obsessed with), stated that:“The heart of compassion is really acceptance. The better we are at accepting ourselves and others, the more compassionate we become.”In today's times, women of all ages and backgrounds are speaking up and taking the lead. This newfound power leads to great strides in both our personal and professional lives, but it doesn't come easy. For many women, self-acceptance is an ongoing journey that requires resilience in the face of countless setbacks. Women often feel like they're not good enough, whether it's their appearance, intelligence, or ability to do things "right." This can lead to a lot of self-judgment and anxiety. For our guest, Jen Aks-Neuman, it is time for women to break the mold and achieve radical acceptance of themselves.Jen is a documentarian and embodiment coach who founded herStories in response to the pandemic as a way to help Womxn tell their stories of resilience. Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week in our final #herstory in our 2022 March series, I'm happy to welcome Black feminist researcher, writer, and curator Nydia Swaby. Nydia is a Jamaican-American and have called London home for the past decade. She has a PhD in Gender Studies (SOAS (https://www.soas.ac.uk)), an MA in Women's History [Sarah Lawrence College], and a BA in Anthropology and African American Studies [Rollins College]. Her practice builds on theories of racial, gendered, diasporic, and queer formation, Black feminism, Black studies, and my previous experience working at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. In her creative approach to knowledge production, she uses archives, ethnography, photography, film, and the imagination to curate programs and visual narratives, write essays and performance pieces exploring the gendered and diasporic dimensions of Black being and becoming. She also creates ancestral altars using family pictures and memorabilia, found photographs and archival images, West African textiles and wood carvings, crystals, fossils, stones, shells, and other curios. These practices converge in her forthcoming monograph, Amy Ashwood Garvey and the Future of Back Feminist Archives (Lawrence Wishart, Summer 2022 (https://www.nydiaswaby.com/amy-ashwood-garvey-and-the-future-of-black-feminist-archives)) and Caird Research Fellowship at The National Maritime Museum, ‘Curating Archives of Affect: Black Feminist Pasts, Presents, and Futures' (December 2021 - September 2020), and my ongoing visual series, ‘Becoming with Archive: Blackness, Gender, Diaspora (https://www.nydiaswaby.com/becoming-with-archive)' (2010 - Present). Alongside her practice-based research, Nydia work as the Curator of Learning at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, where she collaborates with academics, curators, artists, and writers to develop a multi-disciplinary, practice-based research and learning program. She is also a member of Feminist Review's Editorial Collective and the Curator of Programmes, and co-edited a recent issue on queer, feminist, diasporic, and decolonial archives. Please read on and explore the topics of interest below for a thoughtfully curated account of the many individuals discussed in the episode. And there you have it, just a taste of the Dirty Poetry yet to come.Stay with me for all the rest of this episode of Dirty Poetry, usingthe word poetry very loosely. Our first story is about a group of oldfriends who have known each other for years and years. They'vetraveled together and had adventures and have been a part of eachothers lives for a long time. They know each other well. They havefor a long time, had a monthly card game. Everything was alwaysfriendly and normal... until tonight... when things got strange.Let's take a listen. That was Heads-Up Poker. Written bySusan Di Placido. Ms Di Placido is a prolific author. She has, todate, published ten novels and one collection of short stories. Herstories almost always involve gambling and card playing and many ofthem are set in Las Vegas. But regardless of the setting, Ms DiPlacido always manages to work in a lot of steamy spicy sex scenes. Her work has been recognized and awarded in the literary world. Hershort story, “I, Candy” won the Spirit Award at the 2005 MoonDance International Film Festival. Her short story collection,American Cool won the bronze medal in the 2008 IPPY Awards and it wasa finalist for the 2008 Indie Book Awards. Her novel Shuffle Up andDeal was nominated for the Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award forBest Erotic Fiction in 2010. Susan Di Placido's work has beenpublished in many places. Among them, Maxim Jakubowski's MammothBook Of Best New Erotica in both volume six and volume seven, Zane'sCaramel Flava, Run Devil Run, Slow Trains Literary Review, Rebellion:New Voices Of Fiction, Clean Sheets and Susie Bright's BestAmerican Erotica 2007, which is where we found our story, Heads-UpPoker. Let's take a moment and address theelephant in the room. Okay, one of the elephants in the room. Youmight notice that both of our stories in this episode of Dirty Poetryare written by women, one of them decidedly lesbian, but both storiesare told from the perspective of heterosexual men. This kind ofgender bending perspective shift is, and always has been, commonamong the authors of erotic literature. As readers and listeners, these stories allow us to walk a mile in someone else's panties. And our authors also take an equally joyful turn at that switch. Infact, part of the beauty of both erotic literature and our own eroticimagination is, that in the privacy of our own minds, we can allallow our imaginations, our desires and hungers, to roam freely, toventure into places that we would never allow to happen in our reallives. With all of our real life expressions of sexuality that are sotender, loving, comforting, well... okay, even with the ass slapping, hair pulling excitement that we want in our real life sexuality, still there are places, many places that our imagination goes that wewould never allow to see the light of day. Good writers take us tothese forbidden places and bring us safely back again from theadventures of foreign travel in exotic lands. With our own eroticfantasies encouraged to take wing, our sexual imaginations are nowallowed to travel to places that are unlikely, improbable. Placesthat stretch the boundaries of what sexuality is, and occasionallyeven jump the fence into the impossible. Stories that can arousepossibilities that we would have never imagined. But somehow theybecome real for us for just a few brilliant moments in the privacy ofour own minds. It is there, in the privacy of our imagination that wecan begin to discover our own most primal sexual arousals. It isgreat writers with their wild tales, with their exotic erotic...

Z autorytetami z różnych dziedzin rozmawia o odwadze, pewności siebie i pięknie. W drugiej odsłonie programu „Z kobietami o odwadze” towarzyszy jej Marta Majchrzak, psycholożka, badaczka społeczna, założycielka butikowej firmy badawczej Herstories. Majchrzak współtworzyła raporty na temat polskich kobiet i młodzieży (Kids Power, Świat Młodych, Women Power), pomaga też markom i NGO-som, które kierują swoje produkty, usługi i działania do kobiet. Z Grażyną Torbicką Majchrzak dyskutuje o siostrzeństwie. – My, kobiety, potrzebujemy wzajemnego wsparcia. I walką – o wolność, pozycję kobiet w społeczeństwie, równouprawnienie.
