Ensuring that everyone has healthy food options available to them is the impetus for Gwenna Hunter, the founder of the Vegans of LA Food Bank, to launch the venture. Gwenna explains, “Food worthiness is a human right. In providing plant-based foods to communities in need we empower them with new food choices and in turn we create a more sustainable world.” Gwenna speaks about “food worthiness” from her heart. Growing up in a food desert herself in Cleveland, she knows what it's like not to have a grocery store for miles. “Without knowing why, coupled with the lack of education provided, I now know that I was experiencing poor nutrition, not by choice, but by scarcity of accessibility to healthy foods.” With the rising costs of groceries, families are struggling even more to regularly provide nutritious meals. Drawing on her experience working with a non-profit organization managing a vegan food aid program that provided WFPB (Whole Food Plant Based) products and produce for social justice and community organizations, such as the LGBT Center South, Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, Black Women Farmers of LA, Black Women for Wellness, KRST Unity Center, and Downtown Crenshaw, Gwenna her experience and understanding of the dearth of healthy, plant-based options in many areas of Los Angeles to provide food equality to those who do not have accessibility, in partnership with Hope On Union Food Bank. The food bank is collaborating with several well-known plant-based companies, such as Hodo Foods, Good Catch, Hilary's, OMNI Foods, Unreal Deli and more, to make their products available to people who live in these “food deserts” where access to healthy, nutritious food is extremely limited. In addition, fresh fruits and vegetables are offered as part of the program. The response from local residents has been overwhelming since launching the program in May, 2022. During episode nine of The Mothers Podcast we hear from Lisa Simpson whose 18-year-old son, Richard Risher, was killed in 2016 by Los Angeles Police Officer Francisco Zaragoza in the Nickerson Gardens Housing Development. Police fired 70 shots at Risher, 35 hitting his body. Simpson said the police and media created a narrative to demonize her son and spoke about abolition of the police forces over police reform. She spoke candidly about how she was "robbed" by Black Lives Matter Los Angeles in the form of them fundraising in her son's name and never giving her any of the funds and how orgs are supported over moms who are left struggling. The Mothers Podcast is a 10-episode series that puts a spotlight on mothers from across the U.S. whose children have been killed by police violence. Becoming members of a club that NO ONE would wish to join, these mothers' stories go beyond the headlines of each case, dissecting the pain, aftermath and the struggle for accountability for the killing of their child. This exploration unveils mothers supporting mothers to overcome grief and create change within their communities all across the country. The Mothers Podcast features the work of Unicorn Riot interviews going back to 2018 and is a precursor to Unicorn Riot's full-length documentary film, ‘The Mothers.' The podcast series is hosted by independent journalist Georgia Fort and Niko Georgiades of Unicorn Riot. Each episode is edited and mixed by DJ Skizz who provides original music along with original songs by MC Longshot and recorded and engineered by Malcolm Wells, along with editing and producing by Tarik Thornton (Different Worlds Music Group). Jussie Smollett was found guilty on five of six counts of disorderly conduct pertaining to filing a false police report. This trial was in relation to a set-up in which Smollet paid two brothers to pose as Trump supporters, stage an “attack” on him, use racial slurs and non-politically correct terms for homosexuals. All in an effort to boost his career. Even after the evidence had proven a hoax, Melina Abdullah, co-founder of Black Lives Matter Los Angeles defended Smollett criticizing the trial as being a “white supremacist charade” claiming that the judicial system is corrupt working to “devalue their lives.” “Their” meaning black Americans. Ironically, Smollett's case proved how obsolete the Black Lives Matter movement is. If systemic racism was as widespread as BLM claims, the Chicago PD would have chalked this incident up to another hate crime, wrote a report and filed it in the circular filing cabinet. Instead, it was Smollett's star-power which propelled the police to dig deeper, ultimately exposing the hoax. One could call that privilege. What Black Lives Matter fails to understand is that True Justice is not about reparations. A jury should not render a verdict based on claims that the justice system is slanted against a specific people group. True justice is not about revenge. True justice is about truth and restitution based on equity in the eyes of God. Those who are saying that Smollett should be found innocent because of past inequities committed by unrelated parties against minorities are not seeking justice; they are asking for injustice. The very thing against which they say they are fighting.More at www.breakdradio.comFollow on all the socials: https://breakdradio.contactin.bio/

Today on Sojourner Truth: As fires continue to ravage Western U.S. states (in particular California, Oregon and Washington), smoke from the fires have traveled across the country, including to New York City. Also, as far North as Canada and as far East as Europe. The pollutants and fine particles in the air are hazardous to those exposed to it. In particular, those with underlying conditions, children and the elderly. Western states now have the worst air quality in the world. Meanwhile, Donald Trump visited California where he yet again denied global warming, including its relationship to the fires. Our guest is Dr. Robert M. Gould, a medical doctor with Physicians for Social Responsibility. As polls in swing states tighten, including in Florida, Biden and Trump are now neck-to-neck in Florida. The right of prisoners and former felons to vote has taken on new focus. In Florida, voters had approved the right of former felons to vote, but the voters' decision has been undermined again in a series of court rulings that have the impact of blocking people who have already served their time from voting. The Democratic Governor of Kentucky announced that former felons will be allowed to vote in that state, but in California, that right is still being fought for. There is a proposition on the ballot in California that would afford the right of those on parole to vote. Our guest is Dorsey Nunn, Executive Director of Legal Services for Prisoners with Children. Dorsey has over twenty-five years experience working on prison related issues. For our ongoing Campaigners for Black Lives series, we discuss gangs in the Los Angeles Sheriffs units. A federal investigation may be underway, but Black and Brown communities have known for quite some time that violent gangs exist in Sheriff's units in Black and Latinx communities. The LA Sheriff's Department is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the country. We speak with Mark Anthony, an organizer with Black Lives Matter Los Angeles. He made no mention of the name of Jacob Blake, the man shot seven times in the back by Kenosha Police. Instead, he focused on his law and order message, blaming the uprising following Blake's shooting not on community outrage at systemic racism in law enforcement, but instead he blamed the community itself for destroying property, which he calls violence. In terms of policing in the U.S., he said there were a few bad apples, sidestepping the charge of systemic racism. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles on Monday August 31, sheriff deputies killed a 29-year-old Black man Dijon Kizzee, who was shot in the back reportedly 20 times.
