#82 All Learning Is Social: Jered Borup on Social Presence in K-12 Online Learning (Part 2)

In this episode of Why Distance Learning, your hosts continue their conversation with Jered Borup — professor at George Mason University and one of the most-cited researchers in K-12 online learning — about what AI in education is actually doing to relationships, what social presence requires when "build a video lecture" can be done by a chatbot, and why teacher burnout is the real bottleneck the field doesn't want to talk about. Borup connects his earliest 2012 work on asynchronous video to his 2025 Open Praxis research on combining AI-generated text with human-created video, and argues that AI used to offload feedback erodes the very thing online learners need: the felt sense that the teacher is real and knows them.Together, the hosts and Jered explore the conflation of social media, video games, and ed tech in the parental imagination after the pandemic; how to use AI without replacing the relational core of teaching; why one-on-one asynchronous video may build social presence more reliably than synchronous Zoom classes; the DLAC Phase 2 research agenda Borup co-authored with Michael Barbour and Kristen DeBruler; the mental-health gap between teachers and other professionals with comparable education; and Borup's one-line answer to the show's title question — that personalization and Universal Design for Learning are easier to do online than off. This is Part 2 of a two-part conversation. Outside of pregnancy, guidelines emphasize diabetes self-management education and support to facilitate informed decision making, self-care behaviors, problem solving, and active collaboration with health care professionals. This includes, in those with good health literacy, the concept of patient-led self-titration of basal insulin results which has data that it improves glycemic management compared with clinician-led titration for type 2 diabetes among nonpregnant adults. But what about for GDM? Can patient's self manage their BASAL insulin? In this episode, we will review a new RCT published in April 2026 in the Green Journal on this very subject. As novel as this is, it is not the first to report on this as it was also published (retrospective study in the UK) in 2022. This is a novel approach to insulin in GDM but there are some questions that remain. Listen in for details.1. Boonpattharatthiti K, Wechkunanukul K, Mayang N, et al . In this episode of the Dyslexia Explored Podcast, hosts Darius Namdaran and Jo Lee speak with Ellie Barbour, a candlemaker and content creator who recently left her job as a high school PE teacher to pursue her business full time. Ellie shares being identified as dyslexic in primary school, receiving a formal diagnosis in later primary, and the impact of confidence, stigma, and support such as Touch Type Read and Spell. She describes a difficult first year of high school with missed support, followed by a pivotal move to Morrison's Academy where small classes, learning support, and mind mapping transformed her study strategies, including using a scribe in exams. The conversation explores dyslexia strengths, teaching as a role model, possible ADHD, and how her all-in focus helped grow her taper-candle business from a lockdown hobby to markets and beyond. This podcast is sponsored by ivvi. This is the second of a two-part conversation with Michael Barbour, one of the most cited researchers in K-12 distance and online learning. Michael is assistant dean for academic innovation and integration at Touro University California, and has spent nearly three decades studying the design, delivery, and support of K-12 distance, online, and blended learning — as well as the policy and governance structures that shape it. If you haven't listened to part one yet, start there. In this episode, we examine an assumption that surfaced repeatedly during the pandemic: that because distance learning has been around for decades, schools should have been ready. Michael has the data on why they weren't — and why, despite a global wake-up call, most still aren't. The numbers are striking: less than 10% of teacher preparation programs included any meaningful content on K-12 online learning even after COVID. And as Michael makes clear, the next disruption — whether pandemic, weather event, or political unrest — is not a question of if, but when. From there, the conversation takes a surprising turn. Michael shares a counterintuitive research finding: students who had K-12 online learning experience actually performed worse as online learners at the university level — and he unpacks exactly why that happened and what it reveals about the difference between synchronous and asynchronous program design. He also walks through one of the most compelling real-world models of synchronous distance learning in K-12 — the Center for Distance Learning and Innovation in Newfoundland — and what it would actually take to replicate that kind of intentional design at scale."Every single one of your listeners, unless they plan on retiring in the next year or two, will likely experience another regional or global pandemic. This is the first of a two-part conversation with Michael Barbour, one of the most cited researchers in K-12 distance and online learning. Michael is assistant dean for academic innovation and integration at Touro University California, and has spent nearly three decades studying the design, delivery, and support of K-12 distance, online, and blended learning — as well as the policy and governance structures that shape it. His work has brought him before legislatures and policymakers around the world. In this episode, we put a foundational assumption on the table: that research gives teachers answers. Michael makes a clear and generous case that it doesn't — and that both researchers and classroom teachers share responsibility for that misunderstanding. The distinction he draws between best practices and promising practices isn't semantic. It has real consequences for how leaders build cultures of evidence-informed decision-making, and how teachers are trained to engage with research in the first place. From there, the conversation moves into some of the most persistent misconceptions in the field — including the idea that distance learning only works for certain types of students, and the often-overlooked role that local support plays in whether any online program succeeds or fails. Michael also challenges the assumption that face-to-face teachers have a natural engagement advantage over their online counterparts, and makes a compelling case for why the distance environment may actually offer more tools for meaningful connection — not fewer."The best that we can hope for in all honesty is that research might lead us to a promising practice as a starting point." — Michael BarbourTopics covered:00:00 — Michael's origin story in K-12 distance learning~04:00 — Why teachers don't engage with research, and why researchers share the blame~10:00 — Best practices vs. promising practices: why the distinction matters~17:00 — Who distance learning actually works for~21:00 — The role of local support in online program design~24:00 — Engagement, belonging, and the myth of the visual cue~30:00 — What "personalized learning" actually looks like in K-12 online contextsLinks and resources:DLAC Research Agenda Summary — referenced early in the conversationNEPC Newsletter: AI and Personalization in K-12 Online Learning — Michael's recent piece on what personalized learning actually means in practiceDiscover more virtual learning opportunities at CILC.org with hosts Tami Moehring and Allyson Mitchell.Seth Fleischauer's Banyan Global Learning combines live virtual field trips with international student collaborations for a unique K12 global learning experience.

This episode takes a wider view of strategy as something shaped by people, culture, and context rather than documents and declarations.Rather than offering quick fixes or surface-level advice, this conversation encourages listeners to rethink how organizations approach foresight, decision-making, and long-term alignment. This series definitely reinvented the vampire sub-genre of horror; it's a superb drama, fantasy, horror series by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. I loved its adamant vibe and atmosphere, its gruesome screenplay, its outstanding expansion and acting. One of the few series that truly combines science fiction and horror with a hell of a cast. It was an absolute pleasure to sit down and speak to Nikolai about his role as Ansel as he described from his point of view what it was like to act as a Strigoi in this riveting and thrilling series. I love how we get to witness his character slowly decline into the madness and watching the transformation process after one is infected. Every little detail he described is pure gold and that is me being honest; I mean, this show has grasped the essence of not being a traditional vampire story, but more into the deep history and lore of a different type of “vampire” I must admit that I love this version better. The Strain is STILL streaming on Hulu and I am certainly glad that it is… I cannot get enough of this show as I am about to watch the entire series again for the tenth time

In this episode of The Clay Edwards Show, recorded on FAFO Friday, August 29, 2025, host Clay Edwards kicks off with a safety reminder amid flash flooding in Central Mississippi, sharing a personal close call on the road.   The show dives into local crime news, covering a double murder in Brandon over two days. Clay details the targeted homicide on Highway 80 and the subsequent killing of Christopher Story, noting the suspect, Matthew Brian Kidd, was apprehended after being on the run. He discusses the case as involving white suspects with face tattoos, critiquing "white thuggery" and cultural appropriation, emphasizing that he calls out bad behavior in his own community without excuses like systemic issues. Clay addresses backlash over a photo of the sheriff smiling post-arrest, defending it as relief over removing a threat from the streets. He offers condolences to the victims' families and speculates on motives like drugs or disputes, while touching on stereotypes and profiling based on appearance and records.   Shifting to national news, Clay reacts to reports of Donald Trump revoking Kamala Harris's Secret Service detail, questioning if it's pettiness or tied to potential legal actions related to the 2020 election, and notes that former vice presidents typically receive lifelong protection unless declined or revoked.   Marking the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Clay shares his survival story: riding out the storm in downtown Jackson with his dad during Category 1 winds, witnessing flooding and debris, and later helping evacuees by cooking and donating food to the Coliseum shelter. He discusses the influx of people from New Orleans' 9th Ward contributing to cultural shifts and crime in Jackson. Clay harshly critiques a recent Netflix Katrina documentary as a "dumpster fire" focused on New Orleans' systemic racism narrative, ignoring Mississippi's self-reliant response and the Gulf Coast's predominantly white communities that rebuilt without heavy federal aid. He praises Mississippi's handling under Governor Haley Barbour as a model of boots-on-the-ground action, contrasting it with Louisiana's issues.   Listeners call in with their Katrina experiences, including a military veteran deployed for relief efforts who describes convoying from Texas, sitting idle on a Louisiana airfield despite resources like FEMA plywood going unused, and the inefficiencies in search-and-rescue operations. Another caller explains DMORT (Disaster Mortuary Recovery Team) activations, body recovery protocols (including autopsies to rule out murders disguised as storm deaths), and Mississippi's proactive response without waiting for federal direction.   The episode wraps with reflections on judging modern governors by Barbour's Katrina standard, emergency management successes like MEMA, and ironic parallels between Katrina complaints about government inaction and current debates over federal involvement in urban crime.

We kick off the Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series at the very beginning…it's Chuck's conversation with one of Brian Wilson's most towering influences, Ross Barbour of The Four Freshmen!  His father Murry took Brian to see the legendary harmony group when he was 14, and he got the opportunity to meet them. The concert and that meeting had a profound effect on young Brian, who said, “My voice was shivering as I was talking to them…I was so in awe of them. It was one of the biggest moments in my life. [Their song] ‘It's a Blue World' made me cry. I learned to make four-part harmonies from the Four Freshmen.” Russ passed away back in 2011, which makes this posthumously released interview a particularly priceless buried treasure.  Here's just a few of the many things that Ross discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:The genetic uniquenesses that combine to make family harmony an inimitable feat;Ross's fantasy of developing a barbershop harmony supercomputer; How Brian Wilson built upon The Four Freshmen sound for The Beach Boys; How the group achieved the sparkling sound of their Capitol recordings; From where Ross feels the melancholy in Brian's music originated; And what it felt like to ultimately be passed over in favor of groups like The Beach Boys who wouldn't even exist without The Four Freshmen. There'll be a short sneak peak running publicly for free, but the entirety of this podcast will only be accessible on the Major Tier of Discograffiti's Patreon. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss John Barbour's epic poem The Brus, or Bruce, which he wrote c1375. The Brus is the earliest surviving poem in Older Scots and the only source of many of the stories of King Robert I of Scotland (1274-1329), popularly known as Robert the Bruce, and his victory over the English at Bannockburn in 1314. In almost 14,000 lines of rhyming couplets, Barbour distilled the aspects of the Bruce's history most relevant for his own time under Robert II (1316-1390), the Bruce's grandson and the first of the Stewart kings, when the mood was for a new war against England after decades of military disasters. Barbour's battle scenes are meant to stir in the name of freedom, and the effect of the whole is to assert Scotland as the rightful equal of any power in Europe.WithRhiannon Purdie Professor of English and Older Scots at the University of St AndrewsSteve Boardman Professor of Medieval Scottish History at the University of EdinburghAndMichael Brown Professor of Scottish History at the University of St AndrewsProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:John Barbour (ed. Guest: Karen Barbour   Guest Bio: With nearly 40 years of surety experience, Karen Barbour founded The Barbour Group in 2002, a nationally licensed surety agency focused on construction bonding and advocacy, with offices in Maryland and Tennessee. TBG is a certified DBE, WBE, WOSB, and WBENC firm. Her advocacy sparked in the late 1990s when achieving a Federal Acquisition Regulation change permitting annual bond forms to support five-year contracts instead of one bond for five years, giving small and minority 8(a) firms the capability of bonding such projects. Karen serves on the U.S. SBA's National SBDC Advisory Board, MAA (BWI) Small & Minority Business Advisory Council, as Vice Chair for AMAC's Government Affairs Committee, and on boards such as Women Construction Owners & Executives and Girl Scouts of Central MD for over 10 years. Karen co-founded the Alliance for Hispanic Commercial Contractors, Party For A Cure, and the National Small Business Party. She continues to manage an exclusive surety bond program with Hensel Phelps Construction Co. that to date has bonded over $170,000,000 in subcontracts with no losses.   Key Points: Early Career and Challenges as a Woman Started in the insurance and surety industry in the 1980s as one of the few women in a male-dominated field. She faced pay inequality and a lack of mentorship or grooming for leadership. Despite working 80-hour weeks, she wasn't offered ownership opportunities.   Founding the Barbour Group After a successful career as a bond producer, she left to start her firm in 2002. Her motivation included economic independence, work-life flexibility, and family care (as a single mom and caretaker for her father with Alzheimer's).   Passion for Cold Calling Loved the challenge and directness of cold calling. Used it to differentiate herself and prove her value in a field where women were not readily accepted. Emphasized understanding of construction and surety underwriting, which made her uniquely effective.   Advocacy for Minority and Women-Owned Businesses A pivotal moment came in her 20s when she unintentionally walked into a minority contractors' meeting. Shocked by the industry's bias (her company directed underwriters to flat-out decline minority applicants), she left and began actively advocating for diversity. Worked to bond minority and women-owned firms, growing underwriting from $250,000 to $2.5 million in a year without losses.   Personal Motivation and Values Grew up in a polluted, working-class neighborhood in Maryland. Experienced loss and hardship early in life (lost her mother at 11). Driven by empathy, fairness, and a strong sense of justice. Discovered later in life that her biological father was a neurosurgeon, which helped her understand her innate compassion.   Diversity, Inclusion, and Economic Equity Emphasizes the importance of seeing and celebrating cultural differences, not ignoring them. Believes diversity brings better business outcomes and strengthens communities. Argues that systemic exclusion limits contributions from capable individuals and that access to capital and education are key.   Community and Social Impact Initiatives Founded the Alliance for Hispanic Commercial Contractors to support minority businesses with financial assistance, consulting, and sponsorships. Created Party for a Cure, a nonprofit supporting children with neurological diseases. Developed a political platform, the National Small Business Party, to give small businesses a stronger voice in policy.   Core Philosophy Step through fear—growth and purpose lie on the other side. Use business as a vehicle for empowerment, particularly for underrepresented groups. Diversity isn't just a value—it's a strategic imperative for societal and business success.     Guest Links: www.thebarbourgroup.com www.ahcc-midatlantic.org www.nsbpusa.org – National Small Business Party Home | Minority Business RoundTable | Washington, D.C. - Nonprofit for AHCC www.pfac-md.org Party For A Cure – Nonprofit that helps kids with Neuromuscular Diseases       About Salesology®: Conversations with Sales Leaders Download your free gift, The Salesology® Vault. Francis Scarcella - Miranda Barbour: Inside the Mind of a Teenage KillerJan 11, 2024The Satan worshiping teen charged with murdering a 42-year-old man she lured through Craigslist claims two other men responded to her ad but failed to show up.Miranda Barbour, 19, and her husband, Elytte Barbour, 22, are accused of stabbing and strangling Troy LaFerrara in Pennsylvania, after he responded to her ad for 'female companionship' in November. However Barbour now claims that two other unidentified men narrowly escaped death by failing to keep their appointments.'I tried it a few times but it never worked out,' Barbour told The Daily Item in her second jailhouse interview in six weeks.'I knew we (Elytte Barbour) were going to do this since the day we met, and we tried, but the others just didn't show up.'Barbour claimed in her first jailhouse interview on February 14 that she killed at least 22 other people over six years in a cross-country murder spree motivated by her satanic cult beliefs.During her second jailhouse interview at the State Correctional Institution in Muncy, a maximum security women's prison, Barbour repeated her claims and said the FBI have not questioned her.She said she was prepared to show authorities where she hid the bodies.'I said before I would talk to them (FBI) about all of this, but they never came to see me,' she told The Daily Item.'They are looking for full bodies. They won't find any. But they will find body parts.'The Daily Item reported that local investigators in three murder locations named by Barbour are taking the claims seriously, but said they have no unresolved homicides they know about.Barbour said she dumped some body parts in Big Lake, Alaska, and also in Mexico Beach, Florida where she worked as a 15-year-old go-go dancer. She also said she dumped a body off Interstate 95 near Raleigh, North Carolina.Barbour lived in Alaska, Florida and North Carolina before moving to Selinsgrove last fall with her husband.Sunbury police say the couple murdered LaFerrara the day of their three-week wedding anniversary and Elyette Babour's 22nd birthday.Elytte Barbour had allegedly told police he and his wife wanted to kill together. In her sensational first jailhouse interview in February, Barbour claimed she killed 22 people in the past six years in Alaska, Texas, North Carolina and California.Explaining that she adopted a murderous alter ego she dubbed 'Super Miranda' when she killed, Barbour said that she kept a favorite knife that had notches on - one for each of her victims.Speaking to TMZ about the horrifying admission from Barbour, Daily Item reporter, Francis Scarella said that he omitted the frightening and unsubstantiated number from his story. However, he confirmed that like the fictitious serial killer Dexter, Barbour said she only killed bad people - those who abused children or owed money and that her satanism controlled her murderous rages.Indeed, Scarella told TMZ he spoke with an ex-roomate of Barbour's who said that the abused teen possessed two vials of semen belonging to her husband and that she used them to masturbate in a satanic ritual.Claiming that she only killed 'bad people who do bad things' in her self-confessed nationwide murder-spree, Barbour has been compared to the fictitious 'moral' serial killer played by Michael C. Hall on the Showtime cable network.Amid these gruesome claims, the tiny Alaskan town of North Pole has become the center of the outlandish story about satanism and serial killers that Barbour claims began at the behest of a cult leader.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
