IF WOMEN HAD JUST KEPT SILENT IN THE CHURCH… THERE WOULDN'T BE A CHURCH. STRONG STATEMENT… BUT THAT'S THE FACT, JACK!!! SEASON 3 EPISODE 10 PREQUEL TO MOTHER'S DAY PODCAST THE TRUE STORY OF THE REVEREND MRS. ADA CASTON SLATON BONDS OF THE CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (A MOVIE ON THE SILVER SCREEN SCRIPT ALMOST COMPLETE... WATCH FOR IT IN THEATERS IN 2023) In yellowed and dogeared Red Chief notebooks dating from 1914 to the 1960s, she told a part of her memoirs of the difficulties of being accepted as a woman in the church. One Sunday, a man walked out of her church, the Progress Cumberland Presbyterian Church, outside the small town of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana. Having not researched the congregation before visiting, he was apparently appalled to discover the pastor of this tiny house of worship was a woman. Yep, that's right… a woman preaching the Word of God. Can you imagine that? He wrote to her later to explain that if she would just go and STUDY THE BIBLE, then she would come to the understanding that women were not allowed to teach men about Christ. This was in 1918 when the Progress Cumberland Presbyterian Church was celebrating its 8th Birthday. This same woman applied for ordination with the Presbyterian Church in 1914 at this same church when it was only four years old. According to her writings, it didn't bother her as she had dealt with this kind of mentality for the last 6 years. In her own words, she said, "That's how long it took for the Cumberland Presbyterian Church to give me my ordination as a minister in the church after my first application. That's how long it took for me to pass every known obstacle they threw at me. How did the stranger put it, "GO AND STUDY MY BIBLE." The full true story can be found in FAITH - SEVENTY TIMES SEVEN. Caution must be exercised because some of Ada's struggles are quite graphical and in some cases, violence will break your heart! This story is true! One that ends with the Ku Klux Klan No. 60 taking matters into their own hands to protect who they called the Mother of All Presbyteries... the woman they said reflected PURE WOMANHOOD! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sidneystjames/message

Sam and Bill think they have figured out the perfect plan to come up with an easy two thousand dollars: they will kidnap a little boy and force his parents to pay a lot of money to get him back. But when they lure little Johnny Dorset into their buggy with the promise of a bagful of candy, they soon find out they've taken on a lot more than they can handle. If you've ever had to take care of a wild and rambunctious child, this story will certainly make you laugh! Now sit back, relax, and listen to this story come to life.

Two small-time criminals, Bill and Sam, kidnap Johnny, the 10-year-old red-haired son of Ebenezer Dorset, an important citizen, and hold him for ransom. But the moment that they arrive at their hideout with the boy, the plan begins to unravel, as the boy actually starts to enjoy his kidnappers. Calling himself "Red Chief", the boy proceeds to drive his captors to distraction with his unrelenting chatter, malicious pranks, and demands that they play wearying games with him, such as riding 90 miles on Bill's back pretending to be an Indian scout. The criminals write a ransom letter to the boy's father, lowering the ransom from $2,000 to $1,500, believing that the father won't pay much money for his return. The father, who knows his son well and realizes how intolerable he will be to his captors and how eager they will soon be to rid themselves of the delinquent child, rejects their demand and offers to take the boy off their hands if they pay him $250. The men hand over the money and the howling boy – who had actually been happier being away from his strict father – and flee while the father restrains his son from following them. The ironic situation is where the kidnappers have to pay the father to get his son back (or in truth, to actually agree to even accept him back) instead of the father's paying the kidnappers for the return of his son. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hmphaudiobooks/support

O. Henry was the nom de plume of William Sydney Porter, a gem of an American writer active around the turn of the 20th century. Very active, in fact: over 300 short stories, and most of them containing his signature feature - the plot twist. The Ransom of the Red Chief is a particular gem. No spoilers. Enjoy.

Here's the hilarious "The Ransom of Red Chief" by O.Henry- Ever wonder what inspired the movie "Home Alone"?. It was probably this story by O.Henry, in which two bungling small-time crooks decide to kidnap a precocious ten-year-old boy and hold him for ransom, only to find that the boy is far more than they can handle. The story is well-written and will keep you smiling from the start. Enjoy all three of our shows at www.1001storiespodcast.com, or anywhere great podcasts are found. Karen M. Chan, an actor, director and producer is merging old-time radio dramatic techniques with modern podcasting to bring a new, fresh approach to storytelling for public media. Chan, a veteran of theater, television and film, has lately been concentrating her efforts on dramatizing works of literature for digital distribution by WOUB Public Media. She uses unabridged works of literature and brings them to life using actors from Ohio University and the surrounding communities. She marries their dramatic dialogue with original music produced and played by regional musicians and original artwork to accompany the audio stories. Her youngest actor has been 8 years old and the oldest in her mid-eighties. Over 150 different actors have been used to produce eight different works, to date. Partnerships also have been established within Ohio University such as an ongoing alliance with the School of Media Arts and Studies in the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University. The stories are not only being shared publically but they have been used in classrooms and as vehicles for people to learn English as a second language. Chan recently was contacted by a Brazilian man who asked her to produce more stories so he can learn to speak English better. Chan has had a lifelong love affair with radio dramas and the art of telling stories with one’s voice. She says her passion started as a young child as she would listen to radio dramas with her mother. So far, Chan and WOUB Public Media have digitally produced: The Sleeping Beauty, Through the Looking Glass, Peter and Wendy, Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery, and O Henry’s The Ransom of Red Chief. The Holiday favorites A Christmas Carol, The Gift of the Magi, and Twas the Night Before Christmas have also been created and are available to wide audiences. New works are in progress including an original work about the Underground Railroad featuring an African-American cast. Additional stories are in various stages of development and production. The existing stories can be heard at http://woub.org/ecousticalchemy/
