Chris expresses appreciation for core contributors' work behind the scenes.[00:13:51] The panel discusses awards and Ruby Heroes. Robby talks about his contact with Rick Olson (technoweenie) and his contributions to Z shell and “Oh My ZSH!” and he talks about his band “The Mighty Missoula” and recording a new album.[00:19:24] William Kennedy is joining us now and they discuss his famous blog post on Single Page Applications (SPAs). SURPRISE!When we announced Parents' Rights In Education Month a few weeks ago, we were not aware an Oregon County Board of Commissioners was taking it into consideration!PRIE extends a hearty "Thank you!" to the Yamhill County Board Of Commissioners for recognizing November, Parents' Rights In Education Month! We extend our appreciation to Commissioner Mary Starrett, VICE CHAIR for bringing the PROCLAMATION to the Agenda, and for  Casey Culla, Chair and Rick Olson for passing it!NOT for SCHOOL BOARDS ONLY!The Yamhill County Proclamation was a pleasant surprise as PRIE members approached many local school boards over the last two years. In 2019, after the first reading at a work session, one district heartily endorsed it, only to face attack from the local teachers union. See story below.Another Oregon district followed suit, only to change the verbiage significantly altering the meaning replacing "board" with "teachers."Twice, parents in Austin, Texas made attempts by presenting the Proclamation at public meetings.Recently, Ft. Worth ISD parents gathered 200 signatures on a petition calling for PRIE MONTH adoption. The Board administrator promised a board vote, which was recanted on the day of the meeting, claiming need for more community input.  No problem. We have all year to work on this!OREGON KANGAROO COURT Teachers' Union Applied Pressure to Rescind and ReplaceWe wonder about the Texas board's experience in relation to a similar experience with our OREGON group. In October, 2019 Molalla, Oregon School Board passed a Resolution declaring November, Parents' Partnership In Education Month, affirming "the constitutional right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children." At the following November 21 Work Session, after receiving pressure from the teachers union,  the Molalla School Board voted to Rescind the Resolution and replace it with one acceptable to the Oregon Education Association. The new RESOLUTION affirms parents' partnership with teachers, not their elected school board, and acknowledges anti-discrimination laws, not parents' rights. The OEA school representative pressured MOLALLA School Board to usurp PARENTS' RIGHTS!The replacement Resolution was not published for the public to review prior to the vote.  This statement was found at the bottom of the document written prior to the meeting:  "ADOPTED this 21st day of November, 2019." In other words, the board proclaimed victory before the vote. The board voted to rescind the previous Resolution and replace it in a single vote, without ANY opportunity for public comment.Anyone with minimal understanding of Roberts Rules knows neither of these actions are lawful proper procedure.ALL City, County, and Sate Boards are welcome to recognize Parents' Rights in Education, Month! Support the show (https://www.parentsrightsined.com/support-the-cause.html)

Jay Timmons and Rick Olson, a Virginia-based couple, started their family with the help of surrogacy. They had two amazing daughters and thought their family was complete when a friend asked if they would be willing to consider an embryo donation. For their third child, the dads were matched with a surrogate in Wisconsin. However, just weeks before the birth of their son, a new judge was appointed to their case, for what they thought were routine judicial proceedings. The judge’s extreme views lead their family to experience a nightmare of epic proportions. Listen to Jay and Rick’s remarkable story of perseverance through unimaginable hardship, and their dedication to ensure that no other parent experience the same pain. They discuss with Ellen and Jenn: • Their background and the start of their journey in Virginia. • Exploring adoption but being told they would have to lie about their sexuality. • Turning to surrogacy and having two baby girls. • Receiving two embryos from a friend and conceiving a baby boy. • A new judge taking their case in Wisconsin and appointing a guardian ad litem. • The judge’s ruling characterizing them as human traffickers(!) and denying them parental rights of their son. • The judge (fortunately) resigning. • Being assigned a new judge who overturned the nightmare judge’s ruling. • Working to change the laws in Virginia and elsewhere to make sure this doesn’t happen to others. • The passing of Jacob’s Law. • Their advice to hopeful parents. What does it really mean to pivot and stay connected and relevant to your existing customers while developing strategies to market to new ones? Jake Smith, Entertainment Sales Lead at Olson Visual boldly states that the reason they’ve been successful over the years has been by placing huge value in the quality of the product. And during this challenging transition- that has not changed. Through that level of care, customers can rely on feeling safe during a time that is so uncertain in every other aspect.  About Olson Visual: Bob and Jeannette Olson moved to Los Angeles in the late 1940’s. After working at a photo store and a short-run partnership, Bob Olson founded the Photo Blow-Up Lab on April 1, 1954. They specialized in black and white enlargements in the professional photography industry. They gained wide success by installing photographs for well-known hotels and commercial buildings in Hawaii. The lab became nationally known with orders from Alaska to Arizona. Jeannette Olson began to work for the firm. Their partnership launched a very prosperous business that reached a wider audience including: interior decorators, advertising agencies, trade show exhibit builders, and Hollywood celebrities. Dennis Hopper was an early customer asking Bob to enlarge his work. Bob and Jeannette Olson retired in 1984 and passed on the business to their sons: Rick, Dan, and Tom. The brothers changed the name to Olson Color Expansions and expanded the business to museums, events, and trade shows. They continued to work with well-known celebrities including: Arnold Swartzenegger, Barbara Streisand, John Baldessari, Helmut Newton and Michael Jackson. In the 1990’s Olson Color Expansions stopped providing fiber-based paper and relayed fully on machine-processed (with a resin coating). Their clientele changed from walk-ins to larger businesses in museum, retail, and entertainment sectors.  Next, the company was propelled into the digital era and they acquired new state-of-the-art machines. The first digital printer purchased was a 36-inch wide ink jet. Their next printer allowed them to print sixteen feet wide with unlimited length.  With the constant change in graphics and displays, their name became Olson Visual. They are now a full-service digital printing and installation firm encompassing all forms of visuals. “It took three of my boys to take my place.” – Bob Olson More From Olson Visual: Contact: info@olsonvisual.com Visit the website: https://olsonvisual.com/ Connect with Rick Olson on LinkedIn *If there is a specific resource you would like to see on covid19biztools.com you can reach us HERE. *If you would like to be featured in our Q&A segments of the show, email us your business questions info@covid19businesstools.com *Thank you for listening and please share the show or an episode you love with someone who might need it during this challenging time. In a lot of web applications, you need to control who can access your data. Authentication is the key to this type of security. Ruby on Rails has some plugins and gems that make authentication pretty easy. Here are a few: restful-authentication authlogic devise When putting authentication together, make sure that your authentication schema provides encryption for your passwords and a salt to make it more difficult for hackers to figure out which users are using the same password. Also make sure that your failed authentication messages read "Your username or password is incorrect." rather than pointing out which specific field is incorrect. This will prevent hackers from mining your usernames and trying to guess their passwords. Lost password messages should also report success every time. Since you won't be able to decrypt the passwords, you should always give a message like "An email message has been sent to you to reset your password" even if the username or email isn't in your system. Finally, to avoid problems where people are sniffing networks with tools like firesheep to get usernames, passwords, and session cookies. Make sure that you're encrypting your logins and sessions with SSL. Use the ssl_requirement plugin to take care of this for you. Here's the video: And the transcript: Rails Coach Podcast episode 6. Hey everybody and welcome back to the Rails Coach Podcast with Charles Max Wood, that’s me. This week we’re going to be talking about authentication. But before we get started I really want to talk about where things have been going with this podcast. It’s kind of been an exploratory mission for me to kind of figure out how I want to talk about Rails. The thing is that I’ve had the Teach me to Code podcast for awhile, and I really didn’t feel like once I moved it from the Rails Coach podcast to the Teach Me to Code Podcast that I could talk as deeply about Rails, and so I wanted to talk about that there. The problem is that I’ve been talking about things that I feel like are better explained through demonstration as opposed t o actually talking about principles that people should know when they’re programming in Rails. So what I’m going to do is I’m going to kind of change tactics a little bit. So I’m not going to go into as much things like; you should use this tool, you should use that tool. Well, I am, but I’m not going to go into how they’re used, I’m not going to go into what they are. What I’m going to try and do instead is I’m going to talk about general principles around certain things that are relevant to Rails. So, for example, this week I’m going to be talking about authentication, so I’ll probably bring up a few plugins or gems that you can use for authentication and I’ll talk about a few of the principles that define good practices for these different things. So in this case I'm going to be talking about authentication, and there are things that I see that people generally get right, and there a few things that I see that generally people don’t get right. I see these things, some of these things, done on these huge sites that have thousands and thousands of users and I’m flabbergasted that this is there because it’s so simple to just write a script that takes advantage of some of this stuff. And so I'm just going to jump right in on the authentication stuff. First off, I just want to talk a bit about the history of authentication with Rails. It all kind of started, as far as I can tell, with the restful-authentication plugin that was written by Rick Olson. This was probably four or five years ago. And restful-authentication took advantage of the RESTful approach that Rails had implemented at the time and proved an authentication scheme where it used the RESTful paths like GET and POST and PUT and DELETE, to manage sessions, and so sessions were the resources that the restful-authentication handled.
