Right now in the U.S. the Trump administration is working hard to change not only what their country is, but what it has been, and who gets to take part in it. Government records are being deleted or heavily edited. In many cases, references to women or Black men in leadership positions, and references to trans people have been deleted. What's more, the non-government organizations that collected these histories are being defunded, and that has historians worried.Guests: Head of MUN's folklore department and Associate Professor of Folklore, Identity, Religion and Politics Mariya Lesiv, Assistant professer at MUN's history department specialising in LGBTQIA-plus history and women's studies Alessio Ponzio, Assistant Professor in Communications and Media Studies specializing in Feminist Media Studies Julia Polyk-O'Neil
The message was delivered on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Randy Lewis, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION What does it mean to remember? And what does it mean to forget? In a world where history is being rewritten, censored, and erased, we must ask: Who holds the pen? From the echoes of prayers at the Western Wall to the solemn silence of Dachau, this journey confronts the uncomfortable truths that shape our present. What happens when one nation chooses to reckon with its past while another buries it? As history teeters on the edge of repetition, will we stand as witnesses to truth, or let power dictate what remains? History was written down for the very first time in the ancient region of Mesopotamia. In Between Two Rivers, Moudhy Al-Rashid tells the story of the civilisations that rose and fell, through the details left on cuneiform tablets from 4000 years ago – from diplomatic letters to receipts for beer. And the drive that led ancient scribes to record the events and legends of the past.Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus was probably born in AD69, and although little is known about his own life, his biography of the twelve Caesars vividly captured what it was like to be at the centre of power in the Roman Empire. The historian Tom Holland pays homage to his fellow history-writer, Suetonius, in a new translation of The Lives of the Caesars.Archaeologists at the ancient Sumerian city-state of Ur believe they found evidence of a museum in the ruins, which suggests that the desire to display and preserve artefacts, and tell stories from the past, is nothing new. Gus Casely-Hayford is the curator of the V&A East which opens in the Spring, and is expected to offer a new way of viewing the past, and a chance to see behind the scenes of a museum.Producer: Katy Hickman
What are the legal implications of the unprecedented mass pardoning of the January 6th rioters? What does it say about American rule of law? President Biden's DOJ prosecuted nearly 1,600 of the January 6, 2021, rioters—many for acts of shocking violence against police and government offices. On January 20, newly sworn-in President Trump, in one of his first official acts, issued a sweeping grant of clemency to all of the rioters charged in connection with the attack on the Capitol attack. He pardoned most defendants and commuted the sentences of 14 members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers militia, most of whom had been convicted of seditious conspiracy. The response from some of these violent rioters since the pardons has been alarming.“The people who did this, they need to feel the heat. We need to find and put them behind bars for what they did,” said Enrique Tarrio, the former national Proud Boys leader, sentenced to a 22-year sentence on seditious conspiracy charges, on Alex Jones' podcast soon after his pardon. Our guests today are Stanford Law Professor Shirin Sinnar and former DOJ prosecutor Brendan Ballou.Sinnar's scholarship, including a recent study of hate groups, focuses on the legal treatment of political violence, the procedural dimensions of civil rights litigation, and the role of institutions in protecting individual rights and democratic values in the national security contextBallou was a lawyer at the Department of Justice for five years. He resigned on January 23 soon after President Trump's pardons. In a New York Times opinion essay, he wrote: “For while some convicted rioters seem genuinely remorseful, and others appear simply ready to put politics behind them, many others are emboldened by the termination of what they see as unjust prosecutions. Freed by the president, they have never been more dangerous.” He graduated from Stanford Law in 2016.Links:Shirin Sinnar >>> Stanford Law pageNew York Times piece by Brendan Ballou >>> I Prosecuted the Capitol Rioters. We'll relive Lynn's historic ascent and explore what it meant to be at the cutting edge of climbing during a time when sponsorship was rare, the sport was still developing in the U.S., and women in climbing were a minority. Lynn didn't just ascend rock faces—she broke through cultural and gender barriers in a male-dominated sport. But this conversation isn't just about Lynn's remarkable climbs. As we dig deeper, we uncover the mindset, the discipline, and the sheer determination that made her one of the most influential climbers of all time. The conversation revolves around the analysis and critique of the recent presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Brian and the guys discuss the poor performance of both candidates, with Biden struggling to articulate his thoughts and Trump resorting to lies and rewriting history. They also criticize the moderation of the debate, noting that the moderators failed to keep the candidates on track and hold them accountable for their statements. The conversation touches on the calls for Biden to step down and the belief that Trump is an existential threat to democracy. Overall, the debate is seen as an embarrassment and a missed opportunity for meaningful discussion. In this conversation, the hosts discuss the possibility of Joe Biden dropping out of the presidential race and the potential consequences for the Democratic Party. They also touch on the Supreme Court's decision to uphold an Oregon law banning homeless people from sleeping in public spaces.
