Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens
Inside today's Locked on Canadiens Scott and Laura take a look at the Canadiens big win over the Colorado Avalanche, and why it meant so much for the team in Martin St. Louis' return to the team. Not only did Samuel Montembeault bounce back with a huge performance, Nick Suzuki set a new career high in points with his 29th goal of the season. The Habs captain however found himself overshadowed by his linemate, as Juraj Slafkovsky set a new club record on the night as well. After that, it's on to Thursday's game against the Flyers, and neither host can seemingly make up their mind if the Flyers are actually good, or a disaster waiting to happen. Then, to wrap up the show it's time to take a look at the prospects in the AHL, and if quieter years than expected for Sean Farrell and Riley Kidney are any cause for concern. Also, Scott breaks down the watching schedule for the opening round of the NCAA Frozen Four! Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens
Inside today's Locked on Canadiens On Saturday night the Montreal Canadiens found the perfect remedy for some of their ailing players as they dismantled the New York Islanders in a 5-3 win. Joel Armia, Josh Anderson, Cole Caufield and Christian Dvorak all had goals in the impressive win, highlighted by a huge four-goal second period. Despite a nervous ending, it was a statement win from the Habs, and hopefully a building block for several of the goal scorers as well. Then, it's Monday and that means Three Up, and Three Down! On the up side of thing, the Habs offence is slowing waking up over the course of this week, and a big part of that is from two large players on the ice. Both Josh Anderson and Juraj Slafkovsky starred against the Islanders in a big way, and that should be some welcomed news for many Habs fans as the end of 2023 approaches. Also on the rise, rookie forward Riley Kidney with the Laval Rocket. While Joshua Roy is grabbing most of the attention, Kidney is slowing starting to find his own form and develop into a prospect worth following in the AHL. On the flipside of things, the Laval Rocket continue to lack any sort of consistency in their play, losing 7-1 after pulling off a stunning last-minute win the night before. Strauss Mann hasn't been able to hold the net, while the defence continues to struggle badly. Scott also has some issues with how the Montreal Canadiens are handling call ups, as valuable prospects sit in the pressbox instead of playing games at either level. Also struggling badly, the Pittsburgh Penguins...That's it, the hosts just wanted to point out that Pittsburgh might be on the cusp of an incredibly fraudulent season after losing 7-0. Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens
Inside today's Locked on Canadiens The Habs had a pair of games on Friday and on Sunday night as they completed their west coast trip. To put things lightly, it was a great weekend for fans of Conor Bedard and the Draft Lottery. Scott has your recaps, highlights and more! Then it's time for Three Up, Three Down! There is only one big down this week, and that ties in to the Canadiens medical staff. Scott has plenty of thoughts about how this season has gone, and especially how it's gone wrong for the Habs. With Kaiden Guhle being the latest player to play injured in a lost season, how much more can be allowed? In the up segment there's plenty of good wrapped up in a three game losing streak! Riley Kidney and Lane Hutson remain insanely good as they wrap up their regular seasons respectively. Also, Denis Gurianov has provided a lot of fun value since his arrival, and the Laval Rocket have plenty of names worth tuning in for as they push for the playoffs! Inside today's Locked on CanadiensFollowing the end of the World Juniors tournament the Montreal Canadiens saw two of their prospects traded in their respective junior leagues! Scott lays out the moves that sent Owen Beck to the Peterborough Petes in the OHL, and Riley Kidney to the Gatineau Olympiques in the QMJHL. Also out west, Jared Davidson and the Seattle Thunderbirds appear primed to receive a major boost as well! Then it's time for Three Up, Three Down!On the down list this week for Scott is Michael Pezzetta whose lack of discipline is endangering his lineup spot going forward, but also Martin St-Louis finds himself on the down list too as he continues to learn the nuances that come with NHL coaching jobs. Finally, while the hosts love Brendan Gallagher's efforts every night, is his injury history turning his contract into a total anchor, or can it be saved? On the up list though is of course the suddenly red-hot Joel Armia who is raising not only his trade value, but also the value of his linemate Evgenii Dadonov as well! Also on the rise is the unstoppable Small Goals Boy, Cole Caufield who continues to make history with his goal-scoring pace for the Habs. Also rounding out the three is Rafaël Harvey-Pinard, who has been at the forefront of the Laval Rocket's rebounding form to start the new year.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens
Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: The Habs and Flames game had to be decided in a shootout after a wild, hard-fought game at the Bell Centre. Juraj Slafkovsky had a standout performance including a primary assist on Josh Anderson's game-tying goal. Nick Suzuki and Kirby Dach wowed in the shootout to earn both points for Montreal. Things weren't all perfect though as both hosts are getting frustrated with the power play struggles, including Monday's effort. The Flames and Habs game was a wild one in a number of ways, but the biggest storyline at the end of it all was that star forward Cole Caufield was knocked out of the game after taking a big hit from Trevor Lewis. If he's out for anything length of time it's a massive issue for the Canadiens lineup and offence, so what can the team do to fill the void? The immediate answer might be sliding Juraj Slafkovsky up to that spot, but what about potential call up options from the AHL? Team Canada announced their final roster for the upcoming World Juniors tournament, and in good news Joshua Roy has officially made the team for a second straight year! In the bad news Habs prospects Owen Beck and Riley Kidney were among the cuts and will head back to their respective junior teams. While Kidney suffered an injury in one of the pre-tournament exhibition games, neither Scott or Laura is a fan of Beck being among the cuts. Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens
Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:The Habs and Flames game had to be decided in a shootout after a wild, hard-fought game at the Bell Centre. The immediate answer might be sliding Juraj Slafkovsky up to that spot, but what about potential call up options from the AHL?Team Canada announced their final roster for the upcoming World Juniors tournament, and in good news Joshua Roy has officially made the team for a second straight year! In the bad news Habs prospects Owen Beck and Riley Kidney were among the cuts and will head back to their respective junior teams. Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens
Inside today's Locked on CanadiensWith the Canadiens playing in back to back games, there was some concern if they would hold up well against a Canucks team looking for another win as well. Those concerns appeared to be unnecessary as Montreal romped to a 5-2 win thanks to another huge effort by the young core of the team. Nick Suzuki scored 55 seconds in to set the tone, and a pair of goals from Kirby Dach helped the Habs coast to a second straight win. Even with the advanced metrics looking ugly, Scott breaks down why this game was never even close and why it's okay to enjoy the wins when they happen. With the World Juniors tournament starting in just over a month there are early projections coming out for Team Canada and others. While Joshua Roy and Riley Kidney appear to be early favourites to make the team, Owen Beck looks to be a longshot right now. Is Beck being snubbed, or is this a case of Hockey Canada over thinking the roster again? To wrap up the show Scott takes some time to check in on the Laval Rocket, and examines their early season struggles. Is it the goaltending from Cayden Primeau and Kevin Poulin? How are the featured prospects in Xavier Simoneau, Jesse Ylönen and Rafaël Harvey-Pinard playing? Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens
Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: Scott has had enough of the nonsensical goaltending debates on Twitter over the last week and is laying down the gauntlet against Martin Brodeur. So the question becomes, who is the true best goalie of all-time? The hosts give their lists and their reasoning, with both agreeing in the end that Brodeur, while great isn't on the same level as Dominik Hasek or Patrick Roy. After that it's on to listener questions including the thought of the Habs using a second buyout window to clear cap space to get both Kirby Dach and Cayden Primeau signed. If they were to do so, who would Scott and Laura buy out, and who do they think would actually be the one to go? Is there a road for Paul Byron to join the Habs coaching staff if he were to retire this season? Would the hosts rather see the Habs do a Mothers trip or a Dads trip next season? There's plenty of World Junior questions to round out the show as well, including the expectations for Joshua Roy and Riley Kidney. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: Scott and Laura welcome Byron Bader(@ByronMBader) to the show to discuss all manner of things related to hockey prospect pools. The hosts ask Byron how his site hockeyprospecting.com works, and how his model helps to predict the futures of all 32 NHL franchises. They learn about how things as small as what league a player is drafted from can help form comparisons dating back 32 years! Naturally the next question is, how do prospects like Joshua Roy and and Riley Kidney stack up inside Bader's model and how they project in the future. Would a season like the one Roy just had in the QMJHL project even better in a league like the OHL or WHL? Finally, with 14 picks in the upcoming NHL Draft, how does adding a Shane Wright impact their ranking? Scott also wants to know, if you can overcome a lack of superstar talent, with a wealth of mid-tier NHL talent projections. The hosts also ask Bader about how his model projects the current top three in the draft rankings, and how Juraj Slafkovsky stacks up to Shane Wright. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! We discuss the Canadiens' decision to use their first round pick on Logan Mailloux, who asked not to be drafted by NHL teams this year after news of his conviction in Sweden was brought to light. Mailloux has admitted to distributing photos of a woman he had a sexual encounter with, and the photos were taken and shared without her consent. We talk about the idea of second chances and how the accountability work has to be done before a second chance can be deserved.
