Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: The Montreal Canadiens got a taste of their own medicine against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night, losing 6-4 in a strange affair. The hosts break down the contest including a roller coaster of a game for Jordan Harris, and why despite the loss there isn't much reason to panic if you're the Habs. Then, because it's Friday, that means it's time for the mailbag! Scott and Laura dig into listener questions, mainly focused on the immediate future of the Montreal Canadiens young defensive group. What should the Habs do when Mike Matheson returns in the near future? Matheson is obviously going to play a huge role, but none of the young prospects have shown that they deserve to be sent to the AHL as well. At the same time, what do the Habs do with both Justin Barron and Mattias Norlinder playing well for the Laval Rocket? Also, what sort of food should the Bell Centre serve that they don't already? Who would lead a Habs Christmas album? What other colour snow should you never eat? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Oh boy, there are A LOT of changes that were made at Penguins practice on Tuesday. Hunter starts the show with some new-look lines and pairings as Mike Sullivan has had enough of the same old stuff. What did he do to the forward lines? Is Rakell back up with Crosby? Is Hallander getting the nod over Kapanen? He then looks at the defense and why Marcus Pettersson deserves this shot with Kris Letang. He looks at the numbers from MP28 so far to show the listeners just how good he's been at providing offense and limiting chances against. He then discusses why POJ also rightfully got a promotion while then discussing the logic for why Brian Dumoulin got moved down to the third pairing. Will he easily crush those minutes? Could it be a similar situation to how good Mike Matheson was in the last two seasons? After that, Hunter previews the game against the Washington Capitals, a team that has also struggled a lot this season. He looks at how banged up they are, especially at forward, and how the Penguins can exploit that on Wednesday. Hunter also gives some keys to victory for the Penguins as this rivalry is always must-watch on television. All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: The Montreal Canadiens played an extremely entertaining game on Monday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins, winning in overtime thanks to a huge game from a number of players, including Cole Caufield. Despite playing well the team still had to overcome a two-goal deficit and did so with aplomb, capping the comeback off with Kirby Dach's first goal as a Hab to seal the win in overtime. The hosts break it all down and more! Speaking of players stepping up, Kaiden Guhle dominated the game on Monday and looks like a 10 year NHL vet along the blue line. Scott and Laura take a peek at how Guhle played against the Penguins, and at his incredible metrics that back it all up as well! Finally, the defence of the Canadiens that was expected to get lit up night in and night out to start this season, has surprisingly put together a strong start despite four rookies playing heavy minutes. While Kaiden Guhle has been a standout, the play of Jordan Harris, Arber Xhekaj and Jonathan Kovacevic also shouldn't be overlooked. Scott and Laura take a look at how things can only get better once Joel Edmundson and Mike Matheson rejoin the team in the coming months as well. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: The opening night roster for the Montreal Canadiens is set for their game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday...Sort of. Before diving into some of the injury-related questions facing the Habs, the hosts take a look at who made the 23 man roster, and who was sent down to the Laval Rocket on Monday afternoon. What do the hosts expect from this lineup, and is there more flexibility than we initially expected? Injuries also continue to hamper the team, especially on defence with Joel Edmundson and Mike Matheson set to miss the start of the season. While neither host wants a repeat of last season's devastating injury issues, can the absurd depth across the Canadiens organization help keep the team moving in the right direction? Speaking of depth, Scott and Laura take a look at five young players whose fortunes changed on Monday afternoon. With Juraj Slafkovsky, Arber Xhekaj, Jordan Harris and Kaiden Guhle being told they will start the year in the NHL, while Justin Barron was sent down to the Laval Rocket. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: The regular season is just over a month away, so the hosts are doing an extremely early best guess at what they think the Montreal Canadiens opening night roster will look like. It's Jake Allen's net with Carey Price out, at least until the NHL Trade Deadline. However, can Cayden Primeau supplant Samuel Montembeault with a strong preseason performance after a dynamic playoff run with the Rocket? Or is the young netminder destined for the AHL regardless of his preseason play? On defence the Canadiens are heavy on left side defensive prospects, with Jordan Harris, Kaiden Guhle and Mattias Norlinder all pushing for one available starting spot. Who will slot in behind the veterans Joel Edmundson and Mike Matheson? Which of those two is the top left D on the team anyways? On the right side, can Justin Barron take another step forward in his development, or are Habs fans prepared for another season of David Savard as the top pairing option? Finally, there's almost too many forwards in the NHL right now what does that mean for the first overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky, or is the Slovak able to beat out some of the veteran options? Where do all the centres fit with the new additions of Kirby Dach and Sean Monahan? Are fan favourites Michael Pezzetta and Rem Pitlick going to hold their spots, or is there something special up the sleeves of Kent Hughes in terms of a trade to bring new bodies in? There was FINALLY some news regarding the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday. Hunter dives into the Todd Reirden extension and promotion and why it does make sense for the Penguins going forward. He looks at his track record with Kris Letang since he came back, plus what he did with Mike Matheson after Jim Rutherford acquired him just a couple of years ago. He looks at what he could do with Petry even though he's a bit older, plus how the entire organization respects him as he's continued to grow since he got fired from Washington. He finishes the segment up with the power play discussion and why there are numerous reasons that it'll get back to where it normally is next season. After that, Hunter analyzes the Sean Monahan salary dump trade and shows the fans how prices are sky-high to move out bad contracts. What does this mean for the Penguins? Could a depth D trade be their only way out of the logjam? Why are prices so high right now? Finally, he ends the show with some way-too-early trade candidates for next season when the team is likely looking for some forward help towards the deadline. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! After a long wait, the Montreal Canadiens have finally found a partner for a Jeff Petry trade, shipping the defenceman, and forward Ryan Poehling to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Mike Matheson and a draft pick. At first glance it feels like a loss for the Canadiens as their top right side defender is shipped out of town, leaving just David Savard in that role. However, as the hosts take a look at his microstats and development trend, did Kent Hughes pull off a sneaky good bit of work? At the very least, the Canadiens freed up more cap room, which allowed them to make more moves over the weekend as well. Namely, Montreal has re-signed Rem Pitlick to a two-year contract! After electing to not qualify the forward, thus avoiding arbitration, the Canadiens were able to bring him back on a very cheap $1.1million AAV contract for the next two years. Where does Pitlick slot into the lineup, and does his return slow the full-time NHL debuts of Jesse Ylönen and Rafaël Harvey-Pinard? The Habs weren't the only busy team though, as the Laval Rocket made a slew of moves to get themselves ready for next season. Scott takes a look at the return of Gabriel Bourque to the Rocket, in addition to the new prospects joining the goaltending posse. Who is Philippe Desrosiers and Joe Vrbetic and where do they fit in the Montreal goaltending pipeline? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The early busy offseason continue for Montreal Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes who continues to have a strong summer improving his team from top-to-bottom. The recent rumblings from Pierre-Luc Dubois and a potential exit from the Winnipeg Jets adds another layer of intrigue to the Canadiens' offseason as well the fantasy landscape. Speaking of which, some depth moves from both the Canadiens and New Jersey Devils with the additions of Mike Matheson and John Marino, respectively, improve the blue lines for both clubs and free up some space for their forward groups. Do not sleep on the potential of the New Jersey Devils and the likes of Dawson Mercer, Jesper Bratt, Jack Hughes, Ondrej Palat, Dougie Hamilton, and more. Finally, to wrap up the show, Steele and Flip take a look at some depth moves from the Toronto Maple Leafs and the additions of Jordie Benn, Victor Mete, and most impactfully, Calle Jarnkrok. In the right fantasy hockey league or situation, any one of those players could make the difference for your squad. Thanks for making Locked On Fantasy Hockey your 1st listen, every day.
