Sean Houle is a former police officer and K9 handler who served in North Carolina for nearly a decade. In 2021, he was critically wounded in the line of duty—shot twice at point-blank range with his own service weapon. Since medically retiring, Sean has become a sought-after speaker on faith, resilience, and the lifelong commitment to service.. In this unforgettable episode of Zone 7, Crime Scene Investigator Sheryl McCollum welcomes retired Officer Sean Houle for a powerful firsthand account of survival and purpose. Sean recounts the harrowing night he was ambushed by a suspect from an earlier call—an encounter that would change his life forever. He shares the moments of chaos, the struggle to stay conscious, and the clarity that surfaced as his life hung in the balance. Together, he and Sheryl discuss the split-second decisions officers face, how department policy shapes those choices, and the unbreakable bond between handler and K9 partner. But Sean’s story doesn’t end on the pavement. During recovery, a surprising moment on a family beach trip reminds him that his calling to serve wasn’t finished—it was just taking a new shape. Lisa Renee Triggs was a 15-year-old girl from Dale City, Virginia, who was last seen on May 21 outside the Giant food store at Center Plaza. After a haircut with her mother, she asked to walk home alone so she could meet her boyfriend but that evening, she never made it back. Three days later, on May 24, her body was found in the woods behind the Dale City Recreation Center. An autopsy showed she died from blunt force trauma. Police had a main suspect but not enough evidence to make an arrest. Three years later on August 14, 1989, Diana Lynn Houle's decomposed body was discovered inside her apartment in Dale City, Va. An autopsy revealed blunt force trauma as her cause of death as well. Are these cases connected? Could it be just a coincidence they had similar details in their cases? Either way, Lisa and Diana's cases remain unsolved and they need JUSTICE. This episode is sponsored by Allen & Heath and RCF.Houle, a 2025 USITT Rising Star winner for sound design, works as a designer and associate across the U.S. Last year, she launched a website, NMH Spatial, aimed at introducing folks to the benefits of spatial audio, in addition to shedding light on a number of common myths and misconceptions about the technology and how it can enable and impact your art.Episode Links:Nat Houle WebsiteNMH SpatialNat's Blog On SoundGirls.orgQ&A: Natalie “Nat” Margaret Houle, 2025 USITT Rising Star WinnerTheatrical Sound Designers and Composers Association (TSDCA)Pat MacKay Scholarships For Diversity In DesignUSITTEpisode 289 TranscriptSpatial Resources:TiMaxL-Acoustics L-ISAMeyer Sound Spacemap God&b audiotechnik SoundscapeFLUX:: SPATConnect with the community on the Signal To Noise Facebook Group and Discord Server. Mary Louise Day, born in 1968 in Little Falls, New York, grew up in a turbulent household with her sisters Kathy and Sherrie, marked by instability, foster care, and abuse. After her parents' divorce, her mother Charlotte married William Houle, a military man whose relocations added to the family's isolation. By 1980, living in Seaside, California, 13-year-old Mary faced severe abuse from William. In July 1981, following a violent incident where William beat her—allegedly over a sick dog—Mary vanished. Her mother claimed she ran away, and the family never reported her missing, silencing any mention of her. Nine years later, in 1992, Sherrie, haunted by her sister's disappearance, filed a missing person's report. The case went cold until 2002, when Seaside police reopened it. Investigations revealed William and Charlotte had cashed Mary's Social Security checks after her disappearance, suggesting foul play. In 2003, a search of their former home uncovered a child's shoe and soil indicating decomposition, backed by cadaver dogs, but no body was found. Interviews with Charlotte and William were chilling—William admitted to beating Mary and hinted at a “demon” killing her, yet lacked sufficient evidence for arrest. Then, in November 2003, a woman claiming to be Mary surfaced in Phoenix, Arizona, during a traffic stop. “Phoenix Mary” matched Charlotte's DNA, closing the case, but inconsistencies—like her accent, vague memories, and sudden ID acquisition—raised doubts. She lived with Sherrie briefly, but tensions and her erratic behavior fueled skepticism, especially from Kathy, who doubted her identity over forgotten childhood details. In 2008, cadaver dogs again hit on a former Houle residence, yet no remains were found. By 2017, as Phoenix Mary battled cancer, new Police Chief Judy Veloz re-examined the case. Further DNA tests confirmed Charles Day as her father, and a photo from the 1980s, verified by facial recognition, supported her identity. Her memory gaps were attributed to trauma and alcoholism. She died in 2017, leaving unresolved questions: Was she truly Mary? If so, where was she for 22 years? If not, who was she, and what happened to the real Mary? The cadaver dog hits remain unexplained, deepening the mystery of this dark, perplexing case. I've covered numerous stigmatists in my few years hosting this podcast: St. Francis, Padre Pio, Gemma Galgani... however, none are as unique as the Stigmata of Irving Houle.Irving was a grandfather and former plant manager out of Michigan. A totally normal guy, until ... he received the wounds of Christ in the stigmata.Unlike other stigmatists, Irving was called to a healing ministry, which may have cemented his future canonization. Please consider supporting my podcast through joining myPatreon here.
