Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings saga! Join them for their FIRST TIME Reaction, Commentary, Analysis, Breakdown, & Full Movie Spoiler Review of The Return of the King—the epic conclusion that brings the journey of Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, Gandalf, and the fellowship to its heart-stopping finale. Elijah Wood returns as Frodo Baggins, Ian McKellen as Gandalf the White, Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, Sean Astin as Samwise Gamgee, Andy Serkis as Gollum / Smeagol, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, John Rhys-Davies as Gimli, Billy Boyd & Dominic Monaghan as Pippin & Merry, Liv Tyler as Arwen, Miranda Otto as Éowyn, Karl Urban as Éomer, Bernard Hill as Théoden, David Wenham as Faramir, and Sean Bean as Boromir in flashbacks—with unforgettable scenes featuring the ultimate battle for Middle-earth! Let's not forget the movie quotes Aragorn's inspiring battle cry, “The day may come when the courage of men fails… but it is not this day,” and his reverent words to the hobbits, “My friends, you bow to no one.” Éowyn's defiant triumph shines with “I am no man!”, while Sam's hopeful reminder, “There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for,” resonates deeply. Gandalf offers wisdom with “I will not say, do not weep, for not all tears are an evil,” and celebrates victory with “A great shadow has departed.” Frodo's chilling, “The Ring is mine,” marks his moment of succumbing to temptation, while Aragorn's quiet resolve in “For Frodo,” before charging into battle, leaves a lasting impression.  Roxy & Tara REACT to the Best Scenes & Most EPIC Moments, including The Lighting of the Beacons, Sam vs. Shelob, Pippin Sings for Denethor, The Ride of the Rohirrim, Aragorn's Speech at the Black Gate, Éowyn vs. The Witch King, Frodo & Sam in Mount Doom, The Eagles Arrive, The Destruction of the Ring, Aragorn's Coronation, and Beyond!! Månadens tips: böckerna Babel, or the Necessity of Violence av R.F. Kuang, Sandra Newmans The Western Lit Survival Kit och How Not to Write a Novel (den senare tillsammans med Howard Mittelmark), samt adventskalendrar med pussel skapade utifrån egna motiv.

Welcome to the forty-fourth episode of The Daily Rings of Power Podcast! Today's episode is a very rough and ready reaction to Bear McCreary's soundtrack album for Season 2, which was released at the end of last week. This will be a similar episode to the two-parter I did for the Season 1 album, in that it won't be a detailed analysis of the individual tracks and all the musical nuances contained within. I just made it through Shelob's lair in Cirith Ungol. It seemed like the quest to destroy the ring had died with a stab in the neck to Frodo by Shelob, the huge spider that haunts this dark passage and has lived there time out of mind in malice and death. It was a near thing but that is just the beginning of the trouble of Frodo and Sam. I am almost through my annual trek through Middle Earth and perhaps the hardest part of the whole quest is the thirteen days Frodo and Sam face in Mordor after Sam finds Frodo. It is a test of endurance. Small folk in a hostile environment, with the weight of the ring so heavy Sam must carry Frodo. Nothing is easy, nothing is safe, terror is around them and also in them. They are physically beat, emotionally exhausted, harassed by Gollum and plagued with doubt—doubt that almost undoes the whole quest in the end—and yet they endured. To put yourself inside the story is almost too much to bear. Our text in Hebrews reminded me a lot of that this morning. We start a new sermon series this week called A Better Country and will be looking at faith that endures. Basically, we have Israel's story told through individuals that—by faith in the promise of a better country, a better home—endured, no matter the cost or circumstance. This week, however, we will be content to merely define what enduring faith is and then look at the tapestry of the lives of God's people, a great cloud of witnesses to the faithfulness of God to his promises. Teri and I are just back from the Bahamas and, let me tell you, it is something! And yet, as glorious as it was, I started to long for home, and I can't wait to be with you on Sunday.

Critters, creatures, and things that crawl -- part of the fun of building a new world is getting to populate it with not just sapient characters, but all the flora and fauna. And sometimes, that means the things you find in the smallest corners and crevices. Guest Premee Mohamed joins us to talk about the role of bugs and other biology in worldbuilding! Bugs are a critical part of our world, performing so many essential functions that we never think about and that writers often neglect -- so, why is that? Where does our tendency towards squeamishness about bugs overlap with fears of body horror -- and how have SFF stories magnified those fears to create memorable antagonists like Xenomorphs and monsters like Shelob? How can a worldbuilder think about the health of their whole ecosystem, from those itsy-bitsy bugs all the way up to the apex predators -- and if the health of the ecosystem reflects the health of the world, how can that provide some good plot hooks for characters? All this and many, many scientific factoids are packed into this episode! [Transcript TK] Our Guest: Premee Mohamed is a Nebula, World Fantasy, and Aurora award-winning Indo-Caribbean scientist and speculative fiction author based in Edmonton, Alberta. Jared, Oriana and Ned discuss their collective choice of topic: Peter Jackson's version of The Return of the King. It's been twenty years since the conclusion of Jackson's three-film effort to adapt the entire Lord of the Rings was released, and it was easily the biggest profile release of the series, coming in with massive interest and attention, setting a variety of box office records in the process along with gaining widespread critical acclaim. It all resulted in a series of worldwide film awards and honors culminating with a famed clean sweep of Oscar wins including best picture, resulting in a tie with Titanic and Ben-Hur with eleven Oscars total but also the only one of those three films to literally win every category it was nominated for, a combined record that still stands. The film's general impact and that of the series as a whole is at this point undeniable, but how it holds up in a look back, caught somewhat between Fellowship's own unquestionable triumph and Two Towers's more stop-and-go successes, warrants its own discussion. What are the many changes made to the tangled relationship between Frodo, Sam and Gollum, and how does that play out as a result for both the film and the wider themes? How does the use of practical models and actual landscapes feed into the feeling of how the film both landed in the moment and held up upon later rewatching, even while it was also the biggest demonstration yet of the possibilities for CGI with massive military clashes and the like? Is it possible to actually lose count of just how many remarkable moments on a grand scale exist throughout the film, even as there are various “well, but…” caveats and questions to raise along the way? How has the whole series of film changed both the perceptions of Tolkien and the film industry in general? And how many endings are there, after all? (Surprise! It never ended, it's running somewhere in a theater right now, maybe.)Show Notes.Jared's doodle. And that's another epic trilogy down. (The earlier entries here and here.)Hurrah for the SAG-AFTRA strike ending and better (not perfect!) terms won.Our episode on evil. Evil!TheOneRing.net report on the return of the Eagle & Child pub. Jason Horowitz's New York Times story about that Italian Tolkien exhibition encouraged by Italy's favorite fascists. Sorry, did we say the quiet part out loud? (In the Guardian, Jamie Mackey with more context.)Our episodes on Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, with lots of notes about the series as a whole so we won't repeat everything here…The sole trailer for The Return of the King. But that's all they needed.Trilogy Tuesday! It was a crazy time and it was great. Here's a photo of the all-day pass given out, and here's an example of that film frame memento given out as well. The opening scene is really something, no lie. Friendly little worm there. The screenwriting guru Ned mentions is Robert McKee – per Brian Sibley's Peter Jackson biography, McKee had come to Wellington, New Zealand to give one of his lectures in 1988, and the New Zealand Film Commission invited Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and future contributing screenwriter for The Two Towers Stephen Sinclair to it and they all apparently took it very much to heart. So a long term impact but even so.The opening exchange between Sam, Frodo and Gollum. Really are some beautifully shot moments in this sequence.Oh did Christopher Lee have things to say in the run-up to the theatrical release. Our episode on the Rankin-Bass Return of the King. It is NOT very good.Yeah yeah the Arwen vision and Arwen dying and…well whatever. But boy that introduction to Minas Tirith. THAT'S how to make an entrance. And the beacons sequence, wow, still. Time zone issues aside. For examples of the Gondor theme earlier on in the series, skip ahead to about a minute into this clip.Ride the Empire Builder! If you like.Hurrah for John Noble (and hurrah for Fringe). Skip ahead three minutes for “The rule of Gondor is MINE!” moment, and the parting between Denethor and Faramir, phew.Minas Morgul, a triumph of John Howe design, glowing and clamped. (The skybeam is the skybeam but the sonic buildup rules.)The Holdo maneuver (it really was great, like the film itself)When Theoden and Eowyn part at Dunharrow, boy that'll ruin ya. That's two good actors very much in the moment. When Aragorn and Eowyn part at Dunharrow, it is very…shippy.“...and Rohan will answer!” Perfect.“The stars are veiled.” Are they, Legolas?Oh you know the Shelob scene. You know. “The Edge of Night” sequence is unnerving, beautiful and horribly sad.The Nazgul as the angels of death, in essence. However petty.Grond! It is great design for sure, plus armored trolls.Gothmog isn't bothered with your petty trebuchets. The Ride of the Rohirrim. No notes. But here come the mumakil…“I am no man!” Yeah, it rules.Air Bud, the lingua franca of us all. That crazy Witch-king mace. Gotta love it.And indeed skip ahead to the end of the clip for that mumak takedown by the scrubbing bubbles. Plus Tracy Jordan with the wisdom. It still only counts as one, we guess.Sam finds Frodo in Cirith Ungol – it's a good moment!“On this good earth!” (Well, maybe not GREAT earth.)“I can carry you!” A beautiful sequence, no doubt. The Crack of Doom. Great acting moments, wonderful moment for Gollum, but not over the cliff again…And yeah when Mount Doom completely explodes…Will they? Won't they?A great way to do individual bows via a movie.“You bow to NO one.” (Cue big emotions.)A wordless toast indeed. And a pumpkin. (And a case of the not gays.)The Grey Havens sends us off. It really is a great Turner-inspired scene.“Into the West” and the end credit portraits. Great job Annie. (The young filmmaker who passed was Cameron Duncan, to correct Ned there.)The Triplets of Belleville is a real treat, see it when you can.Enjoy all the Oscar wins!Ah yes the Eragon movie. Welp. And the Chronicles of Narnia tried. But. (Good luck Greta!)This ran after the episode was recorded but the LA Times had a piece on the movie anniversary and its impact, especially in New Zealand itself. Our Rings of Power and Hobbit films episodes have more about our general qualms there.Want to hear those exclusive podcasts we're talking about on Megaphonic? “A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we foresake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day!”There and Back AgainWith the success of Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy in 2003, he proved that epic fantasy storytelling could not only work, but that it could be worth the risk to film them all at once. It could be argued that the biggest downside to this production method – filming all three movies at once then releasing them separately over the course of three years – is that many awards voters didn't feel each film deserved to be recognized individually. This film won all 11 Oscars for which it was nominated, but should the previous efforts also fared better? Regardless, Jackson delivers an epic trilogy, and this film's extended edition certainly gives us a lot to enjoy. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our conversations about the Lord of the Rings trilogy with a conversation about Jackson's 2003 film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Here's a hint at what we talk about. The opening's fantastic, but why does Smeagol talk the way he does when he's morphed into Gollum? Andy has a bit of a quibble with that. We look at a number of the added scenes in the extended edition, focusing on the death of Saruman, the mouth of Sauron, and the relationship between Faramir and Eowen. How does the mad steward Denethor work for us? What about the massive armies and the battle at the end? Does it go a bit too far? We talk about a few of our favorite sequences – the lighting of the beacons, Shelob's lair and Sam rescuing Frodo from the Orc tower, Sam picking Frodo up to carry him up Mount Doom. We continue looking at the roles of women in the films and how Jackson and his writing team handled expanding their roles. And then, of course, we ponder the plight of the cave trolls. The olyphaunts aren't treated very well either, but we've seen cave troll abuse from the start. No matter how many points we have to poke at in this film, it's an easy one to love. We are excited to have you join us today as we jump into the final installment of The Lord of the Rings film series and emphasize the major differences between Part 2 of the extended edition of The Return of the King in comparison to the corresponding scenes found in its novel counterpart. Please note that the changing of character perspectives as seen on screen does not evenly line up with the sequence of events in the novel in a chronological order.   Follow along while we highlight the key differences found between the movie and the books such as; Frodo's entry into Shelob's Lair, the death of Denethor, the assistance of the dead army, the last council before marching on the Black Gate, and the aftermath of the Second Great War.   With Chase and Josh discussing the irregularities, highlighting problems affecting plot lines, providing evidence through passages found in the novel, and presenting Part 2 of the film with a numeric grade, don't miss out.   "Well, good luck on your road, and good luck to your homecoming!" said Mr. Butterbur. "Should have warned you before that all's not well in the Shire neither, if what we hear is true. Funny goings on, they say. But one thing drives out another, and I was full of my own troubles. But if I may be so bold, you've come back changed from your travels, and you look now like folk as can deal with troubles out of hand. I don't doubt you'll soon set all to rights. Good luck to you! And the oftener you come back the better I'll be pleased."

Samwise returns to where he left Frodo in the pass of Cirith Ungol, only to discover his master already defeated and being dragged away by Shelob. Acting on instinct, Sam leaps into action, armed with his guts, the elven-blade, and the Phial of Galadriel — which proves to be a valuable weapon for bringing actual starlight into the darkness of Shelob's Lair. We see Sam go through his darkest moment yet, discuss how spiders are not like dragons, and power through lots of talk of spider-stench (and spider droppings, because of course we did). [Trigger Warning: this episode includes discussion of suicide.]

Rohan survived the Battle of Helms Deep, Isengard's power is broken and the palantír is now in it's rightful place, while Frodo has been stung by Shelob and presumed dead and Sam makes the choice to continue the journey with the Ring alone, until he learns Frodo is in fact, not dead. Today we move forward into the third and final novel in the acclaimed Lord of the Rings series where we are covering Chapter 1 through Chapter 5 (Minas Tirith-The Ride of the Rohirrim).   Stick around as we get a look at Gondor preparing for war, Denethor having a power struggle with Gandalf, the appearance of Aragorn's old friends from the North, a secret revealed to the Enemy, a path that none living should take, the beginning of the battle at Gondor, Théoden's fateful decision, and a face to face with the Black Captain and the White Wizard.   With Chase & Josh moving into the final installment of the book series, highlighting a few foreshadowed and full circle moments, providing major key takeaways of each chapter, producing evidence of certain opinions, and closing out with intricate debates, you don't want to miss this.   "Farewell, Peregrin son of Paladin! Your service has been short, and now it is drawing to an end. I release you from the little that remains. Go now, and die in what way seems best to you."

The appearance of the biggest cobwebs he's ever seen gives Sam some hope that he's at least dealing with something he understands, and fortunately cutting through them is easy enough with the right tools (such as an ancient Elvish sword from Gondolin). But soon Frodo is wild with (false) hope of his own, and rushes headlong into what Sam knows can only be more danger. We dig deeper into Shelob's history and her mutual understanding with Sauron, learn how much of an arachnophile Gollum really is, and discuss how the One Ring is — and is not — like a palantír.
