NEUSEELANDs Nordinsel — Glüh(cks)würmchen, Wildwasser und Sternenzauber Manchmal fühlt sich Reisen so episch und surreal an wie ein Traum. In Auckland gelandet, gings gleich rauf auf den Fernsehturm und auf einer (gerade erst entstandenen) Vulkaninsel runter in eine Höhle. Wir mussten durch einen Tunnel im Felsen, um den vielleicht schönsten Strand mit schwarzem, glitzernden Sand zu erreichen. Die Kulisse, die sich uns geboten hat, war mehr Film als Realität. Und für Filmkulissen ist Neuseeland ja ohnehin bekannt. Das haben wir dann auch gleich überprüft und uns in den Weta-Workshops mit den Bösewichtern aus Mittelerde angelegt und sind in Hobbiton auf Bilbos und Frodos Pfaden gewandelt. Und wir haben im grünen Drachen opulent geschmaust. In Waitomo gibt es Höhlen mit Glühwürmchen. Dort haben wir jedes Zeitgefühl verloren und sind überzeugt, die sollten eigentlich Glückswürmchen heißen. Neuseeland liegt auf dem pazifischen Feuerring und südlich vom Lake Taupo blubbert und zischt es aus dem Boden als würde ein alter Drache darunter den alten Jonny Cash Song „Ring of Fire“ vor sich hin murmeln. Doch dort gibt's nicht nur kochend heißes Wasser. Gerade mal 8 Grad kalt war das Wildwasser beim Rafting! Wir erzählen euch, warum kalt und wild so entspannend sein kann. Nachts dann der Blick nach oben: Das Weltall in voller Pracht, so klar und hell, dass wir immer noch staunen, wenn wir an diesen Moment denken. Wir freuen uns, wenn ihr wieder mit uns reist. Diesmal gibt's keine gefährlichen Tiere. Versprochen. Dafür eine "echte" Regenbogenbrücke und einen Gänsehaut-Haka am Schluß.

(0:05:31) Codey: But what have you been up to? Like what in your life, like recently, what have you been playing? (0:05:36) Codey: Have you been doing anything super fun? (0:05:39) Aislinn: As of recently, I have been playing a lot more indie games. (0:05:44) Aislinn: I mean I’m still doing like, first stream, I’m still doing a Pokémon Crystal playthrough, (0:05:49) Aislinn: but like I’ve been playing a lot of indie games ever since PAX because I had the opportunity to meet some developers of some games at different companies and whatnot, and it’s been such a wonderful pleasure. (0:06:01) Aislinn: So that’s how I like got the opportunity to play Botany Manor, and I played like a little while ago unpacking and (0:06:09) Aislinn: another game that I’m excited about is Kamayaru, so like all these games that I never really played before, I’m now finally starting to play beyond just Pokemon. And even on the side too, I’m playing Spiderman, which is not anything indie, cozy, anything of that sort. (0:06:27) Aislinn: But it’s been fun to have the balance of the chaos and the cozy indie vibes as well. So it’s primarily what I’ve been up to is just kind of playing. And I think I’ve been playing (0:06:39) Aislinn: more like cozy indie games, also just to be less stressed because work life in general is a lot of stress recently. (0:06:48) Codey: yeah it do me that way um so you need that cozy cozy in your life (0:06:49) Aislinn: Exactly, but what about you? (0:06:58) Codey: well i’m right there with you I need that cozy cozy so I am playing so I most days um every day I play both my um coloring app so I have a cross stitch world is this like app that my grandma got me into years ago and then I deleted it on my app my phone because I was like this is taking way way too much in my life. (0:07:18) Codey: But now I’m using it again, but this time, like as a vehicle to help me overcome ADHD, like in social situations and like keeping me, keeping the part of my brain that wanders, like distracted so that I can focus on what’s going on in front of me. (0:07:24) Aislinn: Hmm. Yeah. (0:07:34) Codey: Um, so I play that every day. (0:07:37) Codey: And then I also have been playing Disney Dreamlight Valley every day. (0:07:40) Codey: I’ve been trying, I finished the main game and now I’m trying to like finish all the questlines for all of the characters and (0:07:48) Codey: level up all the characters to level 10 and then (0:07:52) Codey: Like just kind of have everything. I’m I also started thinking about (0:07:58) Codey: creating rooms in my house for each of the characters like having it having there be like a little mermaid room and (0:08:04) Aislinn: That’s so cute! (0:20:17) Codey: Previously, I just kind of like dropped– (0:20:18) Codey: you in the world and you figured stuff out which is chill but also I like completing quests and getting like a little gold star whenever I finish the smallest of tasks. I’m not gonna complain. Also the camera orbiting is kind of cool so like you can just 100% 360 like orbit around your person now. I guess not 360 but like you can orbit around your person now and like that’s cool. Just kidding but I am very tired and we will need some rest before tackling the first patch. So this update allows you to use a new crafting station called the jewelry station or jewelry table. I can’t remember. But you use that table and add gems to your tools. And the gems do different things. So like if you add, you know, a diamond or something, it’ll boost your your pickaxe in a different way than adding like a ruby would. And there’s eight different gems. And that’s just like, I love that. I love when a game allows you it’s not just like, oh, get the magical upgrade that does the thing like it actually kind of like takes your feedback and you’re like, I want more range on it or like, oh, I’m already pretty good at getting the, you know, the fish line out there. I don’t need that, but I want it to be more stable, you know, something like that. Like, I think that’s cool. And maybe eventually you’ll be able to add different facets so that you can just have a completely gem studded fishing pole that just has all the buffs on it. Very cute. (0:23:34) Aislinn: - Mm-hmm. So how they did so when you first start there’s Mickey Merlin goofy and think that’s it Donald’s not even you have to like rescue Donald from something and then you get him. (0:30:38) Aislinn: And the fact that she’s not is confusing. (0:30:54) Codey: But then like Mickey starts like seeing what seems to be Minnie’s ghost. And then you end up like pulling her out of the in between area. It’s there’s a lot. (0:31:01) Aislinn: Oh? (laughs) (0:31:08) Codey: And the other thing about this story is there’s a lot to the story that explains, I don’t want to spoil it for you, you need to play it. So, so, so there’s a couple times where you see what seems to be Daisy duck, like, you’ll see like maybe her little ghost or you find her ribbon I think at one point, or her bow. And so you know that she’s going to be added eventually and like Donald is just kind of like man I wish she was here and it’s just like (0:31:17) Aislinn: Fair enough, fair enough. And so when she jumps in, she starts she has a new shop called the boutique, and in it you can design your own clothing, dude the clothing in this game is immaculate. So with Daisy, you’re going to be able to do these weekly design challenges and have a whole new quest line to build the boutique super cool. Oh, no, actually, now that I think about it, you don’t get the Valley visit, like the thing that lets you visit valleys until until you’ve unlocked the last area. And so I thought it said something about how there was going to be a certain lucky character released or whatever in the ruins. And I was like, it’s going to be Milo thatch. But it ends up being Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, which makes sense. I wanted it to be my I know Milo thatch. (0:34:38) Codey: So yeah, it’s Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. So this is like one of the first film noir like Disney characters also knew Mickey. And he has this really like film noir like feel to him like he’s in black and white. (0:34:56) Codey: And apparently, like as he goes through the island through eternity isle if he like touches anything, it also becomes black and white. Yeah, so you can kind of see like (0:35:08) Codey: as he, you know, interacts with the environment, the environment changes a little bit. (0:37:30) Codey: Okay, last two things. Oh my gosh. These are so exciting. Research Story. This is a game that I covered on a pod with Bev. So Research Story has a point 0.8 coming out in early May. In this you get something called the dormancy barn. So this this is another game where the developer is really working with the community and like taking their feedback and then incorporating it in a really (0:38:00) Codey: so they added this thing called the dormancy barn because people people were like whoa we’re playing this there are so many creatures that we’ve like tamed or or are researching or whatever and they’re on our farm and we have to like say hi to them every day or else they get mad and it’s just like kind of a lot to do. So you can put them in the dormancy barn and it’s just a place where they can eat and they can just like they just kind of like go dormant and they sleep and the barn has (0:38:30) Codey: to be cleaned so you don’t have to feed them and your you don’t lose your friendship with the animals at all while they’re in the dormancy barn which I think is so less stressful so if you have all these (0:38:39) Aislinn: That sounds incredibly less stressful. (0:47:33) Aislinn: So, I finished the game, I played it in one sitting, which took me, I think it was a nine hour VOD up on my Twitch, but it came down to like a seven hour, like somewhat edited YouTube VOD, so I would say it approximately took me about seven hours to finish the game, (0:47:56) Aislinn: but that’s just me being mean, being slow and everything with it. (0:47:59) Aislinn: I would say approximately you could finish it in probably five hours, give or take. We return to Hobbiton just as preparations for a massive party are underway: we're reminded of how important the postal service is, and get a glimpse of hobbit birthday traditions.

Our featured interview tonight is with Kevin the Hobbiton Piper. Kevin was originally on the show in August 2021. The Hobbiton Piper YouTube Channel has 9.24k subscribers and over 120 videos with pipe and tobacco reviews, box openings, food, drink, and more. Kevin's interview was one of our early novice pipe smoker features, so we'll check in and see how his pipe smoking and YouTube channel have progressed. At the top of the show, we'll have an "Ask the Pipemaker" segment with pipe artisan Jeff Gracik.

This week on Flightless Bird, David Farrier still finds himself stranded back in New Zealand, waiting for his new Visa to be issued so he can make more American Flightless Birds. Cut off from America, he decides to do one of the most touristy things he can imagine: he sets off for Matamata and the tiny sleepy village of Hobbiton. Left over from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, he goes to meet Hobbiton general manager Shayne Forrest, who takes Farrier around the most incredibly detailed living film set he's ever seen. Farrier discovers that Hobbiton has recently opened up a Hobbit house, so Farrier goes inside to experience it with an American man called Matt. The world is changed.I feel it in the water.I feel it in the earth.I smell it in the air.The opening words to the Lord of the Rings movies are a lot better than the opening words to the books. They prepare us for the changes brought on by a new age, to the rise of men and the fall of elves, and the shifting and forgetting of history, of great battles and small acts of bravery. It's all very Lord of the Rings. The book's opening lines are about Hobbiton getting excited for Bilbo's birthday party. Although they do introduce the "eleventy-first" to the english language, which makes it all a lot better. So this is Pat and I am sort of a Lord of the RIngs fan (see the shirt I wore during my bachelor party on our Discord, and the shape of my wedding ring). So I am incredibly excited to review the War of the Ring: The Card Game, a chrome-riddled card game by Ian Brody about the Free Peoples and Shadow Forces battling for the fate of Middle Earth. There's tableau building, deck destruction, hard trade-offs in the multi-use cards, and fitful moments of bluffing and bluster. It's quite a thing. We're looking at IP-based games, too, and the tension that they create against the design of the game. Fall too far into theme and you hit idiosyncracy and imbalance. Andrew and I were practicing daily on the South Mall of the university as the Brobdingnagian Bards. So we were there as a bunch of students ran through the school shouting and waving signs about the oppression of pants. The event resonated with me because, well, we wore kilts at all of our shows. We were “pantless” too. The event spread to other locations around the nation and eventually the world. But it took me four years before I wrote “A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day”, a parody of the traditional Scottish song “Jock Stuart”. Instead of “a man you don't meet every day”, my song was about a man who loved wearing kilts, like I did. I didn't stop there. Again, I felt like No Pants Day was a Scottish holiday. So I decided to create a backstory for my song. I wanted people to think that the origins of No Pants Day was actually a Scottish holiday called No Troosers Day. I researched Scottish history and learned about the Proscription Act of 1746. This act banned the Scots from wearing “highland clothing”. The goal of course was to assimilate the Scots into Great Britain, just like the Disarming Act banned the Scottish from wearing weapons. From that base, I wrote a fictional history of an uprising in Glasgow where the Scots removed their trousers and donned their kilts and rewrote “Jock Stuart” to celebrate their love of the kilt and their culture. The best thing about this fictional history was that a few years later, a newspaper in Canada quoted the blog where I shared this fake history saying that this was ACTUALLY the origins of No Pants Day. This should serve as a reminder to all of us. Check your sources! It also lasts pretty much forever. It is virtually impossible to remove it entirely from what I buy. But I have found a few items that I enjoy that are not that I thought I'd share. Did you know you can buy shampoo and conditioner in bar form? This was one of those weird rabbit holes I went down. Once upon a time, we didn't have liquid shampoo and conditioner. It certainly wasn't in a big plastic bottle. A day after I started researching this a few months back, Gwen came home with a Love Beauty and Planet shampoo conditioner bar from Target. I was starting to lament losing that when I just saw they have bar soap also. In this Real Estate News Brief for the week ending December 17th, 2022... the Fed's latest rate hike, a 2023 top market forecast, and where you can “live like a hobbit” on Airbnb.   Hi, I'm Kathy Fettke and this is Real Estate News for Investors. If you like our podcast, please subscribe and leave us a review.   Economic News   We begin with economic news from this past week. As I mentioned in an update a few days ago, the Fed hiked short-term rates once again. This time, it was a half point increase. The previous four increases were three quarters of a point. That brings the federal-funds rate up to a range of 4.25% to 4.5%. The Fed's effort to stop inflation is expected to go as high as 5.25%. Several Fed officials expect rates to go even higher. Fed Chief Jerome Powell says of the need for more rate hikes: “We're going into next year with higher inflation than we thought.” This is expected to increase the risk of a recession. (1)   The Fed's decision on rates came a day after the latest report on consumer prices. The Labor Department reported that the Consumer Price Index or CPI only rose .1% in November. That brings the annual rate of inflation down from 7.7% in October to 7.1% in November. When you omit prices for food and fuel, the core rate was up .2% to an annual rate of 6%. Digging in a little deeper, you'll see that some price categories are still seeing high inflation, such as rents. They were up .8% in November. The good news is that prices are not rising as fast as they were, but the Fed doesn't expect to get inflation down to pre-Covid levels of 2% until 2024 or 2025. (2)   CoreLogic released its latest report on home price growth, which shows that annual gains are down to 10.1%. That's the slowest annual gain since early 2021, although some metros are still seeing a high rate of growth. The states of Florida, South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina are seeing the biggest home price gains right now. The city of Miami is at the top of the metro list with an annual gain of 22.6%. Tampa is a close second at 20%. (3)   The job market is holding up. As MarketWatch reports: “Layoffs have increased, but job losses remain small.” Initial claims were 20,000 lower last week to an 11-week low of 211,000. They've slowly risen from a 54-year low of 166,000 last spring. Continuing claims are also slowly rising. They were up by 1,000 last week, to 1.67 million. (4)   Mortgage Rates   Mortgage rates have been coming down a bit as the rate of inflation weakens. Freddie Mac says the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage is down 2 basis points to 6.31%. The 15-year is down 13 points to 5.54%. It's not enough to boost demand however. Freddie says it remains “very weak.” (5)   In other news making headlines…   Where Are the Hot 2023 Housing Markets?   Realtor.com came out with a top ten list of housing markets for 2023, and it looks like the South to Southeast part of the country will be in the lead. Atlanta is at the top of the list. As the so-called “New York of the South, it has the highest potential for growth, according to the National Association of Realtors. It is also more affordable compared to similar cities. NAR says that 20% of Atlanta renters can afford to buy a median-priced home. That's higher than the national average. (6)   Raleigh, North Carolina is second on the list, followed by Dallas-Fort Worth, which is one of our preferred markets for single-family rentals. We also like Huntsville, Alabama; Jacksonville, Florida; and San Antonio, Texas which are 7th, 8th, and 9th on the list. We'll have a link to the complete list in the show notes.   The City where Building Permits Take Almost 2 Years!   If you've ever had to wait weeks or even months for a building permit, you probably weren't trying to build something in San Francisco. The Chronicle did a little research on permit-approval time and found that the typical waiting period was 627 days, or very close to “two years”! And that doesn't include the time it might take to deal with an earlier planning approval stage which can take up to a year or more.   According to Corey Smith of the Housing Action Coalition: “It just proves what we know: that San Francisco doesn't prioritize building new housing.” The report comes in the midst of a state review for the city's permitting process. The city's Department of Building Inspection also responded to the report saying that it is currently making changes that will speed up the process, but it won't be known for some time as to how much. (7)   The Airbnb That Lets You “Live Like a Hobbit”!   Airbnb is offering a unique stay at the original “Hobbiton” in New Zealand. That's where filming took place for “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings.” It's been open for tours for years, but the owner of the property is opening it up for 3-night stays next March to celebrate the 10th anniversary of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” Guests will be accommodated in one of 44 hobbit holes and experience life in The Shire. You must be at least 18 years of age, with a verified Airbnb profile, and lots of positive reviews to stay overnight.
