David Richman is an author, public speaker, philanthropist, and endurance athlete whose mission is to form more meaningful human connections through storytelling. His first book, Winning in the Middle of the Pack, discussed how to get more out of ourselves than ever imagined. David's newest book, Cycle of Lives, shares the interconnected stories of people overcoming trauma and delves deeply into their emotional journeys with cancer. We can all point to so many people and so many things in our life where you could say just be real. Just tell me what you're feeling. Yet you say one thing and you're acting a different way. I think the connection to our emotion and our connection to other people through our emotions is really the most powerful thing we have between us as humans. For me, being mindful of my emotions and being comfortable with them and allowing myself to have self-compassion when I'm not the best emotional person I can be; I'll try to get better at that. Thoughts on Breathing Running is all about controlling your breath and swimming too. Breath work is important. It is an area I am exploring right now in my life. I'm being very direct and deliberate about breathing. Suggested Resources Book: Cycle of Lives by David Richman Book: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle App: I have a Garmin Connect watch. I always look at my stress level and sleep info, and resting heart rate. I think that's important because it lets you know when you're stressed out. I suggest you use any app that allows you to understand your physiology and how those things will affect your moods, your biorhythms, your ability to stay healthy, your ability to be present and calm Bullying Story I had a rough childhood and one of the things I went through and how I dealt with some of my issues was to be a bully. I was bullied and I vividly remember some instances that still scar me to this day, but I also know I did the same to other people. I can understand how being more mindful while being bullied is important, but I think if I had been more mindful at the time, that would have prevented me from being a bully. If somebody would have said to me that you can deal with the difficult time that you're going through in a different way, if I'd had a safe space where I could be myself or to have somebody give me some guidance on how to come to terms on issues that weren't perfect, then maybe I wouldn't have lashed out at others. Mindfulness has made me take a step back and ask, what is feeling bad? Are you sad, are you disappointed, do you feel abandoned? What do you feel? Once you know what you feel you can take the steps to address it. Thoughts on Breathing Every single morning I count [as part of my breathing]. I believe there's so much power in something so simple. I do it every morning. Suggested Resources Book: Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell Book: Get Off The Cycle and Run by Rodney C. Burris App: Calm Bullying Story I worked in schools in Baltimore and schools around the country. What I realized was that being with kids in various socio-economic levels, regardless of public or private, the better schools were never based on funding, on the type of technology they had. It seemed to be based on two factors. 1/ Parent involvement 2/ Systemic support. The Principals, Guidance Counselors, and teachers can only do so much. If the system supported the school, the schools seemed to thrive, even if they didn't have a lot of money. Burris 00:20 - Today we’re introduced to Rodney C. Burris, the author of Get off the Cycle and Run. Rodney was inspired to write this book after a conversation with his mother. She was frustrated with the “bad” decisions people were making and she said, “Somebody needs to break the cycle, who’s going to do, who’s just going get off this cycle and run.” This started the vision of using the cycling metaphor to illustrate how we all have a choice to make positive changes in our lives. Rodney talks about how if you take the same effort you’re expending to “cycle in place” you can start to make great improvements in your life. Real life inspiration 04:34 - Rodney used his real life experiences as the background for the book and used those for illustrate the different metaphors in the book. Rodney said, “Every single story in here, is personal.” At 36 years old he has had a lot of unique life experiences, he’s been homeless, has a masters degree from John’s Hopkins University, lived in Florence Italy, visited South Africa, held “light weight” elected office in Baltimore, and homeowner. As a result he had a tremendous story to pull from when writing the “Get off the Cycle and Run”. Rodney and Duane discuss how sometimes you have to change your approach and realize you have to try something different. He also talks about the different cycles relate to where you are in life. For instance the “big wheel” is what you need when you’re young. But as you grow sometimes you struggle to give up a cycle or pattern which you have outgrown. The book talks bout ways to identify when you need to “get off” and “let things go” so that you can continue to grow. Recognize when the cycle has run its course 10:59 - Rodney talks about how important it is to recognize when a cycle has run its course and it’s time to make a change. One of the positive things you can do is to make that realization that it’s time to do something different. The mistake a person can make is to think an “exercise bike”, although helping to make us healthy, is going to get you where you want to go. You have to recognize the people and situations in your life for what they are and have realistic expectations on what they are brining into your life. You have to ask ourself, “Am I getting from this what I want” and be aware of what is really going on. The book focuses on helping people identify the good positive cycles as well as the ones you need to move on from. The feedback on the book 14:30 - Rodney talks about the feedback he’s received since publishing the book. It has been well received and the feedback has been good. Rodney share’s his very first review where the response was it is “bookshelf quality” and something that can be reviewed over and over again. He also talks about how he has been brought into different environments such as education and corporate to talk about the book. Rodney admits this has been a very humbling experience since the release of the book. Give them a head start in life 17:51 - Duane and Rodney discuss the potential for this material to be made available for children. Originally Rodney felt the book and ideas are more adult orientated for their experiences. They discuss the importance of empowering young people and students to be able to recognize their own signs. Rodney is working on a companion workbook to be an accompaniment to the book or work standalone. I didn’t create “The David” he was already there… 20:13 - Rodney talks about how the source material for the book and companion workbook came from. He shares a story from his time living in Florence Italy. While there he visited “The David” created by Michelangelo and he was struck by the level of detail of the sculpture. He was struck by a quote from Michelangelo that said, “I didn’t create the David, he was already there, I simply liberated him.” This is how Rodney feels about how the book was “downloaded” to him. Looking for like minded people 22:53 - Rodney talks about how he’s looking to team and collaborate with like minded people to help spread the message of empowerment. He is wanting to share with people doing similar type of work. It is important to continue to encourage people to seek out good and positive. Duane and Rodney talk about how technology has opened up the possibilities for people to share their message without the restrictions of corporate. Rodney refers back to the string of lights around a Christmas tress and how in the old if one light fails the entire string fails. His goal is to help each other keep each other going and keeping the lights going. It comes down the the one person 26:09 - Duane and Rodney talk about how important the one single person. The power of these messages is that individual person can be touched and empowered to reevaluate their lives and start to make those positive changes. Previously the messages would be limited to the local area but now we’re able to communicate these message to a more global audiences. Consistently look for the simple things to make your life better 28:45 - Rodney talks about another quote from Einstein, “If you can’t explain it simply you don’t really get it.” The idea of riding a bike and peddling is such an easy simple concept. It is important to connect with people who can help you simply grasp the content that is going to make our lives better. Look consistently for those simple things that we can share to make the world a better place. End of show wrap up 30:26 - We wrap up the show with some final words from Rodney and links to find out more about him on social media.
