----------------------------- RAPPEL !!!!!!

Episode 11 features 2 awesome guests.  First, fellow ultra-runner, adventure racer, and college professor of all things engineering, Ron Eaglin talks about his project to create software and eventual application to help with runner safety.  In light of the recent kidnapping and murder of Eliza Fletcher, Ron was inspired to make this his class project this year, so he and a team of intelligent engineering students will be working on a program to make existing applications like Strava, Garmin Connect, etc. more effective in making our fellow runners  safer on their early morning and night time runs.  Also, ultra-runner, coach, and writer, Henry Howard shares a bit of his running story, talks about his online ultra-running newsletter/blog, Runspirited, and answers a listener's training question.Links mentioned in the show:(2) Ron Eaglin | Facebook(2) Runspirited | FacebookUltra Running | RunspiritedSelf defense seminarFacebookFlorida Trail Runners Podcast Episode 56https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fopen.spotify.com%2Fepisode%2F7tV2devDP0A445ztganlUA%3Fsi%3DIF1or0XtR1e48U_1c-gxHA%26fbclid%3DIwAR1vcjfT3fwkYouig3hjvR8Wg1oKp-mBXUN-DQI8qjLCkS2Opu0XfVdVrdA&h=AT1105BmpmvJIOHvsDtEsKaV-IxPe0YrdoKKdVhKMBhOi6MYL0T76-cUbI2W2dh0XsWXC5Ef8fv45hTnOqOecvQz28HiiRIGhI2Q3gnAX21t6Yd0GpNTg2-Ddx55bK4kq1wzjLE-U9wxZhcyhg&__tn__=-UK-R&c[0]=AT2zG2OfOrHx3Gv8ujiqVuQ1KBxc78dklZqTY2xtnDLQihirnEVGdorjTyK9t8yts98A6omV1a50_Kls49PGmu5StLHi0s13F41g0wFT6lAyvB_TK00KSrEwloXNHt2ropz_9xmXrPaOw1mYW26wKZ0G4f4rtDPBxMD1fLiplrzCpJJH5DgVoK2qeHvAv3CTA6JnEya7https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fpodcasts.apple.com%2Fus%2Fpodcast%2Fflorida-trail-runners-podcast%2Fid1605158267%3Fi%3D1000579230223%26fbclid%3DIwAR3poA2ZZ8tsXfRtxoTIa9Cwr46MlxrfPHM07lKStQLSX-HKwSmbyxW97F8&h=AT0tbcfEQmzCi6oD3yvpVhgdJgYiovhDzz9HfB_pOsqVgEJ0VcvoUOEGoBpPNxNVbl1vc3-3WmT6IoqTRUQALjO4P-WqXQQW03oNTuEZNXmDuGGStdXaTyJP-61icjQF24-dTm9-5ex0nLczGg&__tn__=-UK-R&c[0]=AT2zG2OfOrHx3Gv8ujiqVuQ1KBxc78dklZqTY2xtnDLQihirnEVGdorjTyK9t8yts98A6omV1a50_Kls49PGmu5StLHi0s13F41g0wFT6lAyvB_TK00KSrEwloXNHt2ropz_9xmXrPaOw1mYW26wKZ0G4f4rtDPBxMD1fLiplrzCpJJH5DgVoK2qeHvAv3CTA6JnEya7

David Richman is an author, public speaker, philanthropist, and endurance athlete whose mission is to form more meaningful human connections through storytelling. His first book, Winning in the Middle of the Pack, discussed how to get more out of ourselves than ever imagined. David's newest book, Cycle of Lives, shares the interconnected stories of people overcoming trauma and delves deeply into their emotional journeys with cancer. We can all point to so many people and so many things in our life where you could say just be real. Just tell me what you're feeling. Yet you say one thing and you're acting a different way. I think the connection to our emotion and our connection to other people through our emotions is really the most powerful thing we have between us as humans. For me, being mindful of my emotions and being comfortable with them and allowing myself to have self-compassion when I'm not the best emotional person I can be; I'll try to get better at that. Thoughts on Breathing Running is all about controlling your breath and swimming too. Breath work is important. It is an area I am exploring right now in my life. I'm being very direct and deliberate about breathing. Suggested Resources Book: Cycle of Lives by David Richman Book: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle App: I have a Garmin Connect watch. I always look at my stress level and sleep info, and resting heart rate. I think that's important because it lets you know when you're stressed out. I suggest you use any app that allows you to understand your physiology and how those things will affect your moods, your biorhythms, your ability to stay healthy, your ability to be present and calm Bullying Story I had a rough childhood and one of the things I went through and how I dealt with some of my issues was to be a bully. I was bullied and I vividly remember some instances that still scar me to this day, but I also know I did the same to other people. I can understand how being more mindful while being bullied is important, but I think if I had been more mindful at the time, that would have prevented me from being a bully. If somebody would have said to me that you can deal with the difficult time that you're going through in a different way, if I'd had a safe space where I could be myself or to have somebody give me some guidance on how to come to terms on issues that weren't perfect, then maybe I wouldn't have lashed out at others. Find Your Edge
Common Mistakes Triathletes Make (and how to keep it fun!)

Find Your Edge

In today's Find Your Edge podcast, we welcome Coach Marty and hear about his extensive experience in track and field as well as triathlon. We talk about common mistakes triathletes make and how to keep the sport fun.Training Too Hard, Too MuchThe first mistake is that triathletes commonly train too hard, too much. We talk about potential reasons why certain athletes can train a lot and improve, while the rest of us need additional rest and recovery to absorb their training effects. We also talk about the importance of coaching and zone training. One way or the other, we encourage people to methodically use a plan and take plenty of time to get to your race. Picking Races “Willy-Nilly”Many people pick races because they sound fancy (like Ironman), or are in exotic locations, or even close to home. Oftentimes, they don't do their research on the logistics of the course, the skill or fitness required to do that race, or weather. We talk about why it's important to take a more step-wise approach to increasing fitness, gaining confidence, and being adequately prepared for races. Thinking that Triathlon is all about IronmanIronman branded events are intriguing to people, especially those who haven't been in the sport before. But there's a lot more to triathlon that just Ironman (who, incidentally, have been in the news a lot lately based on their debt). We definitely encourage athletes to explore pool swim races for anyone who's not comfortable with open water swimming. There are a lot of great local races too, which are great stepping stones to training for longer distance events. Check out our episode on why you should race locally with Set Up Events owner Bill Scott here. Don't Be that Tri-GeekThere are plenty of goofy things that triathletes do (trust me, we know as we've done them!). We talk about why walking around in your race kit might not be the cutest thing ever or why you look a little silly wearing your aero helmet when you're not riding your bike. Getting Data ObsessedAs coaches, we LOVE data. But sometimes people get too data obsessed. We talk about why it's important to get the “feel” for certain paces and effort levels as well as enjoying the ride (literally) instead of training like a robot. We also touch on how people can “data-dope” to make themselves “look” better on platforms like Garmin Connect and Strava. Plus, data collection is not a perfect process with watches not working perfectly. It's also important to watch where you're going instead of staring at your watch or power meter! Our take home messages:Don't take yourself too seriously and be sure to keep it fun early. Also, to be a triathlete, you don't have to do an Ironman. Know that fitness takes time to build and that getting a coach can help you work through that process in a smart and fun way. Find a community so you can learn, have fun, and build your fitness. Want to work with us?Book your free consult here.

Canale Telegram: https://t.me/da0a42Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/da0a42/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/da0a42/Profilo Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/37970087Club Strava: https://www.strava.com/clubs/da0a42Sito: https://da0a42.home.blogOppure contattami!https://da0a42.home.blog/contatti/----------------------Music credits: Feeling of Sunlight by Danosongs - https://danosongs.com

Low Tide Boyz
GPS Wearables for Swimrun

Welcome to Gear Talk with Annie and Brooke from Swimrun Labs.On this episode, we answer a question that we got from several of our listeners: what GPS Wearable should I get for swimrun? We discuss everything that should be considered in choosing a GPS watch and share our personal favorites. But first…Gear Updates/First ImpressionsAnnie ordered the  Aquasphere Classic Pullbuoy that was mentioned on the Budget Swimrun Kit episode for $6 and free shipping. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as giant as advertised. It’s the size of a regular swim pull buoy. That being said, for $6 you can buy two of them and glue them together.Ark Sports KORPBrooke has continued to have water infiltration issues with her Ark Sports KORP wetsuit. She contacted Ark and they mentioned that she should have sized down…but didn’t offer to replace it for the right size since she had already used it in open water. While the KORP might run big, Chris mentioned that his VIGG suit might run small. So make sure that you are super confident about your size.Ark Sports Keel+ Swimrun Pull Bouy Finally, Chris and Chipper have started testing with Ark Sports Keel+ Pull Buoy (this item is sold out online). Chipper did a “scientific” test of 100 yard swims with nothing, a regular pool pull buoy, a Keel, and the Keel+. The Keel+ was definitely the fastest. Chipper also used the Keel+ in a swimrun practice and was a lot faster in a full kit. Chris did a longer non-scientific test of 500s with paddles alternating between the Keel and the Keel+ and his gut told him that the Keel+ was faster. It took some getting used to swimming with the Keel+ given the size and extra buoyancy in a pool without a full kit on. We’ll have a full review on the Keel+ in a future show. In the meantime, you can listen to our complete review of the Keel Pull Buoy on Gear Talk.GPS Wearables for SwimrunBefore getting into the details about the best GPS wearables and watches for Swimrun, we wanted to make some global statements about GPS watches. First, having a GPS watch is not a necessity to participate in Swimrun or have fun out there so don’t let the lack of a GPS watch stop you from training and signing up for a race. Second, there are a lot of considerations about the technical features of the different watches. There is a better source for that type of analysis: DC Rainmaker is the gold standard for super in-depth reviews about specific watches. Finally, while most GPS watches have some form of heart rate monitoring and use different methods, either with a chest strap or wrist-based optical readers. Chest strap is the most accurate so if you’re looking for something for heart rate training and optical tracking is more for folks that aren’t totally devoted to zone training. Annie had some more thoughts on the matter that you can read below:Optical HR sensor accuracy can vary from individual to individual. Aspects such as skin color, hair density, and position can impact accuracy. The band should be snug.  It doesn’t need to leave marks, but you shouldn’t be able to slide a finger under the band (at least during workouts). Chest strap will always be more accurate than optical. If you do a lot of steady state training, using a wrist based HRM is generally pretty reliable because there’s not much HR variation it needs to pick up. Still can be 2-10 BPM off though, which is a lot.If your training is based on shorter intervals and you rely on HR to guide effort frequently, as in tightly zone-based training, opt for chest strap over optical HRM and save some bucks on your watch as you won’t need this feature. Wrist based HR can have a delay in presenting changes in HR, so if for example you are doing a 30 sec interval at higher intensity, you may be done with the interval before your watch picks up the effort increase. One last note- 24x7 HR monitoring (am resting HR, avg resting HR) can be helpful for gaining a lens into when you may be over-fatigued, having trouble recovering from your training, or responding to other stressors in life. Fatigue and cumulative stress is an important metric to monitor for any athlete. Optical wrist HR does well with this application. Some general recommendations that we have are the following:Make sure that the watch is a GPS watch and doesn’t require you to run/swim with your phone.Make sure that it has good battery life if you’re going to be doing longer events.Make sure it’s waterproof.Make sure that the watch has some form of multisport setting. (Either built-in like Garmin or able to add like Coros, Suunto, etc.)Make sure that the watch can capture the metrics that you care about.GPS Wearables and Watches that We’ve UsedChris and Chipper both use the Garmin Fēnix 5 and would recommend it. It works well, has swimrun-specific settings, good battery life and it’s tough. Chris has used Suunto watches in the past but would always come back to Garmin. Chipper has always used Garmin watches for multisport events but hasn’t seen any reason to change.Brooke uses the Garmin Forerunner 735xt and has had it for three years. She loves it because it calculates open water and pool swim metrics like SWOL score and stuff like that. The battery life lasts about 9 hours for her which is less than advertised but still pretty long life. (This watch is currently on sale on Amazon for $229.95!)Annie also uses that Forerunner 735xt but first used the Suunto Ambit 3 Vertical for a long time. She had initially got the watch for its superior altimeter data collection (and because of the color: Bright Turquoise Blue) but she was disappointed with it when using it for Swimrun. The watch wasn’t easy to set up custom multisport settings. It did what it needed to do but it wasn’t ideal. Annie is super happy with her 735xt and recommends that people do not choose a watch based on the color. NOTE: it’s easy to change the color of the Garmin watch bands if you want to bedazzle your GPS watch look with one of these color bands kits. Here’s a handy list of the GPS wearables and watches that we know of that have Swimrun-specific or Multisport settings:GarminForerunner 735xtDescent MK1tactixFēnix 5, Fēnix 5s, and Fēnix 5xFēnix 6SuuntoAmbit 3SpartanSunnto 5Suunto 7Suunto 9CorosVertexApex ProApexPolarVantageGritOverall ImpressionsIn closing, we all agree that while having a GPS watch is totally optional for Swimrun, we would recommend making your life easy and make sure that whatever watch you use collects and sends your data to your preferred method of recording, e.g., Strava, Training Peaks, Garmin Connect, etc. We’re obviously fans of Garmin but they are by no means the only way to go.That’s it for this week’s Gear Talk show. Legile Tehnologiei. Un podcast despre tendințele în tehnologie

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2020 38:55

Trump o vrea banata in SUA, dar ar accepta si sa fie cumparata, chiar si in parte, de Microsoft.

Canale Telegram: https://t.me/da0a42Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/da0a42/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/da0a42/Profilo Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/37970087Club Strava: https://www.strava.com/clubs/da0a42Sito: https://da0a42.home.blogOppure contattami!https://da0a42.home.blog/contatti/----------------------Music credits: Feeling of Sunlight by Danosongs - https://danosongs.com

By now you have probably heard that the 2020 Ironman World Championship that was originally rescheduled from October 2020 to February 2021 has now been cancelled.  I have been thinking about how much I am going to miss going there with Bill and Khem and the 303 team.  I'm going to miss seeing and being in the presence of the heroes and legends of the sport.  Some of you are going to miss racing in February. One of my favorite memories of my visits was the first time when Bill and I sat at Huggo's watching the Bob Babbitt show and the plan was to interview Mike Reilly after he (Mike) was finished with his interview with Bob.  We also asked Bob to sit down with us and talk about the history of Ironman.  Also in Today's Show: Feature Interviews Endurance News - Kona and STRAVA ransomware outage What's New in the 303 - TTSC, Epic Tri Video of the week   Announcements: We have a new 303 Site sponsor - Buddy Insurance - more on that later Please subscribe to 303 Endurance on the website on the podcast   Sponsor UCAN: I got my new UCAN Hydrate formula and this time I'm trying the Orange Citrus.  When we had Matt Bach on for an interview, he told us there were a couple of flavors that had a lower flavor profile and Orange Citrus was one.  The reason that's important to me is that I have a high sweat rate and a high-average sodium content.  I like to double up on the sodium in the bottle without making the flavor overwhelming.  I need to order another tub of the Orange Energy formula.   UCAN gives you steady energy so you can finish stronger. (July 21, 2020) – IRONMAN today announced that, due to the continued impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic, the 2020 editions of the IRONMAN® World Championship and IRONMAN®70.3® World Championship have been cancelled. The IRONMAN World Championship will return to Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i on October 9, 2021 and the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship will return on September 17 and 18, 2021 and take place in St. George, Utah, United States. IRONMAN is working to secure Taupō, New Zealand as the host destination for the 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.   “It is with a heavy heart that we have made the decision to cancel the 2020 editions of the IRONMAN World Championship and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. While we were hopeful that we could welcome our athletes, their families, and supporters to these events in early 2021, the continued impact of the pandemic makes this impossible. It is tough to make this decision in July, but it will provide the necessary clarity for our athletes, host cities and partners,” said Andrew Messick, President & Chief Executive Officer for The IRONMAN Group. “It is disappointing not to be able to provide our racing community with the opportunity to compete in the IRONMAN World Championship for the first time in our 43 year history and our IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship for the first time since inception in 2006. We will endure, however, and look forward to the day when we will again assemble the greatest professional and age-group triathletes in the world and crown world champions.” Athletes who qualified for the 2020 editions of the IRONMAN World Championship and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship event will be contacted directly. They will have the opportunity to race in the 2021 or 2022 editions of the respective World Championships.   Garmin services and production go down after ransomware attack Smartwatch and wearables maker Garmin has shut down several of its services on July 23 to deal with a ransomware attack that has encrypted its internal network and some production systems.  The company is currently planning a multi-day maintenance window to deal with the attack's aftermath, which includes shutting down its official website, the Garmin Connect user data-syncing service, Garmin's aviation database services, and even some production lines in Asia. In messages shared on its website and Twitter, Garmin said the same outage also impacted its call centers, leaving the company in the situation of being unable to answer calls, emails, and online chats sent by users. The incident didn't go unnoticed and has caused lots of headaches for the company's customers, most of which rely on the Garmin Connect service to sync data about runs and bike rides to Garmin's servers, all of which went down on Thursday.     What's New in the 303: State Time Trial, A Hot, Good and Safe Turnout The athletes at the Colorado State Time Trial Championship endured a hot, fierce wind leaving from Keenesburg and completing either a 10k, 20k or 40k course. 255 athletes spread over many categories of ages including para categories and non-TT bikes competed on Saturday. Many triathletes attended as well and took advantage of a special invitation from the Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado (BRAC).  Results.   Ft. Collins Epic Warrior Triathlon, First Front Range Triathlon Went Well About 150 athletes participated in the past weekends, Epic Warrior triathlon in Ft. Collins. Complete with small wave starts in the pool as athletes lined up in social distant cues and finishing with athletes waiting in spaced out lines for freshly made vegan hotcakes and hash, the Epic Warrior triathlon seemingly was a huge success. And a welcome chance to re-connect with the triathlon community in a safe and responsible way.  Of note, the transition area looked a lot different than normal with half the bikes per bike rack, port-o-potties spread out differently and athletes wore masks setting up their transition spot and waiting in spaced out lines to enter the pool for their wave start. Each wave was fairly small and athletes entered the water about 10 seconds apart to minimize being near each other. As one group would get about halfway into their swim, the next wave would be brought in and cued up.   Video of the Week: We Need To Talk About WTF Ironman is Doing Buddy   Upcoming Interviews: Mark Allen to talk to us about the advice he's giving his athletes during COVID, how to use virtual racing, but not overdo it, and more. Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week.  Please be sure to follow us on social media including @303endurance and @triathlon and of course go to iTunes and give us a rating and a comment.  We'd really appreciate it! With the current lockdown in the UK we are creating two Podcasts a month, rather than our usual one to hopefully keep you entertained. In this month's podcast we – Have a chat about the Garmin Explore appRaster and Vector maps, what are the differencesWe then will look at monitoring your daily activity with a GPS watchIan's FAQ, the frequently asked question Ian gets asked whilst supporting our customers. The first thing we are going to look at on this month's podcast is the Garmin explore app So, Ian, what is the Garmin Explore app? What Garmin GPS units does it work alongside? How do we get it to work? 2. The next thing on this month's podcast is to look at the differences between Raster and Vector maps I wrote a short piece for the GPS Training website looking at this subject and received lots of feedback. Differences between Raster v Vector maps? Vector mapping data SatMap call this type of mapping an Adventure map, whilst Garmin call it Topo Active mapping, but really it is just open sourced map data. These maps (open sourced map data) has come from an open data project that creates and distributes geographical data for the world. It is consistently updated as people around the world update the map data in their local area. These are proper ‘digital maps', as you zoom in you get more information, as you zoom out you get less. The key thing is as you move in and out on the map the clarity stays the same. The only problem with this map type is that as it is not Ordnance Survey based it sadly does not show paths as Footpaths or Bridleways, it just shows everything as a path or track. Often these paths and tracks could be a private drive or something similar. Raster mapping data Raster data can be thought of as being similar to a digital photograph. The reality is in the UK raster maps are just a scanned image of the Ordnance Survey map. Therefore, as you zoom in the map just gets pixelated. But as most outdoor enthusiasts in the UK want to use Ordnance Survey maps on their Outdoor GPS unit the raster maps are used the most. To watch a video comparing each of these map types please just go to our website – gpstraining.co.uk – click on reviews – and then click on the article - Raster v Vector maps for the UK GPS user 3. Ian's FAQ's Garmin I'm unable to sync with or connect my watch or GPS to my smartphone Solution I find that the pairing process can be a little 'troublesome' from time to time. I think that a lot of the problems arise from the Garmin Connect app keeping up with smartphone updates and vice versa. It appears there is no real 'solution' to sorting the pairing problems out other than I'm afraid a little bit of perseverance. I have found recently that should your GPS be paired with an iPad/tablet, disable the Bluetooth on it and then the phone and GPS connect/sync (you should be able to have both connected at the same time but I have found that this doesn't appear to be the case at present). Inizio a superare i 10km, ma vorrei acquistare uno sportwatch. Ovviamente senza investire somme importanti. Puoi fare un nome? Marca? Secondo: pensate a cosa dovete fare. Canale Telegram: https://t.me/da0a42Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/da0a42/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/da0a42/Sito: https://da0a42.home.blogOppure contattami!Telegram: https://t.me/lorenzomaggianiE-Mail: dazeroaquarantadue@gmail.com----------------------Music credits: Feeling of Sunlight by Danosongs - https://danosongs.com

A couple notes about last week's show.  I said Buddy was 14, which was technically correct, but he turned 15 this week.  The old dog.  He doesn't like getting up in the morning now, especially when he has to troop outside in the freezing cold.  The other thing I forgot to add was that I got so flustered by the karmic peeing - pooping incident at the pet store that I forgot to use the coupon that I went home to get originally that started the whole thing. Ce'st la vie. I'm making some progress with my nutrition.  I'm going on over 30 days of pretty clean eating and starting to see some results.  My strategy was to start early and not wait until after the holiday.  This way even if I could only battle to a tie, I won't be starting my spring training cycle in a hole.  If I look at data from previous years, I typically lose it big time in December and it costs me 5-10 pounds. If I have any chance of re-qualifying this year with the new standards, I'm going to have to be 10 pounds lighter going into the race. My legs and pacing continue to give me trouble.  Coach says it's a hangover from the 100 miler.  I just can't seem to find my easy zone 2 pace on the roads.  I'm working it.  Trying to be patient.  On today's show we have our friend David Foss who took an adventure to the Dead Sea to run a trail marathon.  In section one I'll probably give you a brief recap of my Mill Cities race. In section 2 I'll talk about a book I've been reading.  I read a lot of books.  Reading is my go-to vehicle for absorbing content.  I have to be careful because I can be influenced by books as well.  I'll read the latest book on XYZ and find myself all of a sudden trying to put XYZ into full blown practice.  My filter is not the best sometimes.  … This time of year is hard for a lot of people.  I don't know why.  Maybe it's the holidays force you to deal with family stuff.  Maybe it's the cold and dark.  Maybe it's something seasonal with our species.  I was reading an emotional outpouring from a woman on the social media site where she was really struggling.  She had abusive relationships, she was injured and she couldn't shake the feelings of desperation and depression.  The walls closing in.  I suppose that's one positive thing about social media is that people can use it to reach out to the community for help.  Sure enough there were a long trail of positive responses.  People trying to help.  It was a positive response to a cry for help.  111 responses as of last viewing.  I happened to notice a post that our friend who is in a related profession shared.  So I copied it and reposted it.  “Did you know that if you text "Home" to 741741 when you are feeling depressed, sad, or going through any kind of emotional crisis, a crisis worker will text you back immediately and continue to text with you? Many people, especially younger ones, prefer text to talking on the phone. It's a free service to anyone-- teens, adults, etc.-- who lives in the US. Depression is real, you are not alone.” 741741 I have not tried it, but I trust Greg – it's in the show notes if you need it. I also responded that “We are all basket cases. Some of us just hide it better. And to Keep running.” Because on social media people only share their perfect worlds with their perfect relationships and perfect children and perfect race times!  Life's not like FaceBook.  Life is rusty and lumpy.  Don't get caught comparing yourself to someone else's best day ever.  On with the show. … I'll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported.  What does that mean? Section two – Fear – You can handle it - Outro Well, my friends you have spurred your camel through the eye pf the needle that is the the RunRunLive Podcast episode 4-400.  I'm sure it was a biblical, real old testament, experience. Next up for me is the Groton Marathon.  It's a made up race in the town I grew up in.  I've got a handful of people coming out to run with me.  Hopefully the weather won't be so dreadful this year.  There's construction at the place we start and finish so I'm going to have to figure out how to put in another couple hundred feet somewhere! Or just cut the course short.  I mean who really cares, right? If you want to swing by Groton Massachusetts, we have all sorts of distances, not just the marathon.  I usually get 15 -20 knuckleheads from my running club to show.  I think David Foss is going to come up.  The dates work out well this year in that the marathon will be on the 30th so I get a day to recover for the Hangover Classic on the 1st.  Then I jump into some serious training for Boston.  January and February are the big months.  I'm going to talk to coach and see if we can't load it up and get some good miles in.  I'd like to be over-confident going in.  Because, as we all know by now, you never know what the weather is going to be.  If you want to follow my training I use the Daily FitBook platform.  My Garmin data also updates Garmin Connect, Strava and Myfitness Pal – as far as I know.  … I love adventures.  I've been traveling most of my career and I always enjoy the spaciousness and freedom of business travel.  I haven't been getting out as much as I like to in my last couple roles.  Which gives me less fodder for storytelling.  Thanks to David for sharing his travel adventure with us.  I felt like I was there.  I could feel the dry heat and smell the dust.  The dust of centuries.  The dust of civilizations. The dust of history. The first crusade went through where he was.  It was the only recorded time the Europeans used knights in full armor on heavy horse for a frontal charge.  It worked well the first time.  You can imagine how surprising it would have been to have these characters show up in your back yard.   A couple hundred of these guys in heavy armor charging down on you.  As far as historians know it was only used that once in the beginning of the first crusade. Turns out riding a giant horse around the desert in a full metal jacket wasn't the most effective or flexible means of desert warfare.  I understand.  I get uncomfortable in phoenix riding around in a full suit of clothing.  Last week I was in the glorious Holiday Inn at the Cincinnati airport.  I was out at dinner with the client and say myself next to their marketing person who I will be working with.  Come to find out she's running her first 50K that weekend!  You can bet she regretted broaching the topic of endurance running with me! You see, our tribe is everywhere, wandering over in deserts of Negev and over deserts in Hebron KY.  Groan all you want.  I own the Dad jokes. and I'll see you out there. Our interview this week is with Coach Matt Fitzgerald is co-author of 80/20 Triathlon with David Warden. This book packages what professional endurance athletes and their coaches have been practicing for years.  You've heard this concept in dozens of interviews on this podcast starting as far back as former Olympic Nordic Skier Jim Galanes, Dr. Inigo San Milan, and many more. Welcome to Episode #144 of the Mile High Endurance podcast.  Mile High Endurance is your weekly connection to coaches, experts and pro athletes to help you reach your endurance and triathlon goals. We're your hosts coaches Rich Soares and Khem Suthiwan and 303 Chief Bill Plock.  Thanks for joining us for another week of endurance interviews and discussion. Today's show is supported by iKOR Labs.  iKOR is a clean, natural source of recovery enhancing CBD that protects your body from the stresses of training, improves recovery from intense efforts and helps you maintain a positive mental state. The most bio-available CBD product on the market, iKOR is a highly protective anti-oxidant and effective anti-inflammatory.  WADA and USADA legal.  Used by world class professional athletes.  Save 20% by using the code "endurance" at checkout. Go to www.ikorlabs.com for more details.  Thanks to last week's guest, pro triathlete Andrew Talansky.  Andrew gave us the rare perspective of top pro cyclist who has a top 10 GC finish in the Tour de France and now competing as a professional triathlete at the 70.3 and 140.6 distance.  Andrew has a ton of respect for the pros he competes against and he is slowly earning respect as he has been climbing up the result ladder.  He will be competing at Ironman Louisville in a few short weeks and we are eager to see how he performs there and in 2019.  We hope to see him at the Ironman World Championship in 2019.  If you haven't heard the interview, go back and listen to episode #143. Speaking of previous guests.  We want to put out a "heal fast" wish to Benji Marshall from Today's Plan. Benji had a fall on his bike earlier this week and broke his collar bone.  His boss, Ben Bowley sent me an email.  Ben really appreciate the follow up and hope Benji heals up quick. Our interview is sponsored by Riplaces.  Riplaces are the no tie laces with custom tension for the perfect fit.  Pro triathlete proven and endorsed, most durable elastic bungee lace system available and they come in the super cool MHE logo package for $19.98  https://www.riplaces.com/collections/mile-high-endurance Cutting-edge research has proven that triathletes and other endurance athletes experience their greatest performance when they do 80 percent of their training at low intensity and the remaining 20 percent at moderate to high intensity. But the vast majority of recreational triathletes are caught in the so-called “moderate-intensity rut,” spending almost half of their time training too hard–harder than the pros. Training harder isn’t smarter; it actually results in low-grade chronic fatigue that prevents recreational athletes from getting the best results.  In 80/20 Triathlon, Matt Fitzgerald and David Warden lay out the real-world and scientific evidence, offering concrete tips and strategies, along with complete training plans for every distance–Sprint, Olympic, Half-Ironman, and Ironman–to help athletes implement the 80/20 rule of intensity balance. Benefits include reduced fatigue and injury risk, improved fitness, increased motivation, and better race results. Welcome back.  Our post interview discussion is sponsored by Halo Sport.  The Halo Sport from Halo Neuroscience will help you learn the technique and form to get faster.  20 minutes of neural priming with the Halo Headset gives you an hour of neural plasticity to work and lock in the muscle movement that leads to strength, power and endurance.  Use code MHE150 to save $150.

Living on the Edge. In section one I’ll give you my Boston Marathon 2016 walk through.  In section two I’ll give you a post I wrote on innovation that has a business slant but you folks are smart enough to tease out how it all applies to your personal lives as well.  Remember no Harry’s razors ads here, because then my kids don’t get to go to school. That’s right.  One of the companies I was on the leadership team of sold a good sized deal to Gillette who makes those expensive razor blades everyone is trying to disintermediate.  If we hadn’t sold that deal, I wouldn’t get my bonus and my kids would be street urchins now.  That’s why we’re Ad free and listener supported – to keep my kids off the street.  To keep the lights on we have created members’ only content. By signing up for a membership, you will get… Access To Exclusive Members Only audio Member only race reports, essays and other bits just for you! (I’m working on my Eastern States Race report this week, and something funny for Eric) Exclusive Access to Individual Audio Segments from all Shows Intro’s, Outro’s, Section One running tips, Section Two life hacks and Featured Interviews – all available as stand-alone MP3’s you can download and listen to at any time. (I’ve got episodes 4329 – 4335 up – in pieces - already) We will consider other benefits as they are requested by you, because when you’re a member it’s all about you! I’d like to welcome new members Ken, Rebecca, Foti and Greg for helping keep the kids off the street over here at RunRunLive. The Boston piece in this show is a bit long so I’ll keep my intro comments brief.  I’m in my taper for Boston.  I knocked out my last real workout on Sunday with a 9 mile pace run that was again right where I need to be.  The weather looks decent.  Now I just have to have a good day. I’m trying to eat clean and relatively lightly this week.  I’m locked down.  I’ve got no travel until next week and I’ve got enough projects to keep me busy.  It’s still very stressful to sit around and try to stay calm.  … So, It’s time to line up for Boston again.  When this episode drops it will be Friday before the Patriot’s Day.   20 years ago I started running again and ran my first Boston Marathon.  It had its way with me that first year.  It taught me a lesson about what the marathon distance expects from a runner.  Boston expects even more. When I first started running Boston it was still mostly a local affair.  We had our fans and acolytes among the serious runners of the world but it was a still a local race and a local tradition.  When the rest of the world didn’t really care much about city marathons we had a deeply embedded heroic culture and mythology that was already a century old.  We grew up with the marathon in our lives. Boston shaped the long distance road running culture in Boston and New England.  The spring and fall race calendar revolved around it.  You were either training for Boston or training to qualify for Boston.  Seasons of training and racing that had a nice and comfortable cadence. Some things have changed, but things always change in this world.  It’s still the greatest marathon in the world.  And it’s still our marathon. Over the last couple years Boston has become a bit of a white whale for me.  But I’m working on that.  I know I can’t keep doing it forever and the new standards and new qualification windows really force it uncomfortably into my life. I’m completely grateful to have had the privilege of this old race in my life.  I’m grateful to have been able to meet the great men and women who have written their stories there.  Time is a river and you can never step in the same water twice, but I’m happy to have gotten my feet wet when I had the chance.  On with the Show! Section one - Running Tips Boston 2016 Walkthrough - Voices of reason – the conversation Greg Millbourne – As a psychologist, a father, a husband, a runner, a former Army officer and a former country manager of an American business in Russia, I bring a varied and eclectic style to my work. Trained in marital, family and child therapy, I have worked with clients from childhood into retirement and enjoy the diversity of seeing people at all stages of their life and development. My goal is to maximize happiness and reduce anxiety and the impediments to truly enjoying your life. To do so, I am happy to see individuals, couples or families, and look forward to seeing you! Section two What is innovation - Outro That’s it my friends, let the credits roll as we gracefully taper our way out of Episode 4-337 of the RunRunLive Podcast.  With any luck this episode will drop on the Friday before Boston.  Remember, Boston, being the special, on-of-a-kind unicorn that it is, is held on Monday.  That’s Monday the 18th.  Then I have to turn my cranky old self around and pull off the Groton Road Race the following weekend.   I’m starting back into a fairly heavy travel schedule so that should keep me busy.  After Boston I’ve got my Grand Canyon adventure planned for the middle of May.  And I told Coach I’d run the Portland Marathon with him in the fall.  But, I really don’t have any athletic goals for the summer.  I’d consider a trail 50K if I could find an interesting one.  I want to get off the roads and I’ve never raced the 50K distance – so that would be something new for me.  I think that’s what my future agenda is going to skew towards – new and interesting stuff.  You can still support my Team Hoyt campaign for Boston.  The links are in the show notes.  April 24th is the Groton Road Race. You can runit virtually if you’re not in the area – or show up and say hi - just go to .  We took a crew out Saturday and cleaned all the trash up on one section of the 10k to make it pretty for you.  … I’m a bit stressed out this week, because, you know, beyond all of this I still have a job and a family and a home and an old dog to take care of!  I took Buddy to the vet and they thought he was fine.  I have a regularly scheduled appointment in June and we’ll decide whether we want to remove the big fatty tumor in the ‘armpit’ of his back leg that seems to be impinging on his range of motion.  He’s happy.  He still gets out.  Ironically this week as I’m laying low into Boston he’ll get plenty of walks around the neighborhood.  Hey, if all he can do is give hugs, that’s ok with us.    … Closing comments Who out there has seen the original Batman movie?  I’m not talking about Michael Keaton.  I’m talking about the campy one they made from the TV show in 1966.  In one of the scenes they have Batman (played by Adam West) trying to get rid of a bomb.  The bomb is one of those ones like in the cartoons.  A cannon ball shaped thing with a fuse burning.  Batman has the bomb in his hands and is running around the piers on the waterfront trying to get rid of it. The gag is that every time he goes to throw it in off the pier there is something in the way.  Like a boat or a flock of ducks.  So he’s running around with this smoking bomb that he can’t get rid of.  I had a workout like that last week.  Coach scheduled a little tune up workout of 3 sets of 3 X 200 meters all out with 20 second rest between reps and 3 minutes between sets.  It’s basically a lactic acid buffering workout.  Fine tuning for the race. Compared to what I have been doing it’s an easy workout, maybe 3-4 miles total even with the warm up and cool down.  I was working from home and of course the day got away from me and it was getting into the afternoon before I got ready to go.  I was coming off a delayed flight from Chicago the night before and was a bit jet lagged. I figured I’d head down to the track and knock it out.  I drove down to the track and much to my surprise and frustration there was a track meet in progress!  Who do these people think they are using my track! I had to go to plan B.  I figured I’d just knock them out in my neighborhood.  But, of course, my neighborhood doesn’t have the 200’s marked off.  I had to go back to my desk and program this workout into my Garmin.  It took a few minutes to do this, because the workout is a bit detailed in structure.  Then I synced it to my watch and headed out. I ran about a 2K warm up and hit the button to start the first 200.  I’m going all out on these, 99% effort, which for my neighbors I’m sure looked like I was having some sort of fit in the road.  Now, I’ve done enough track work to know how far approximately 200 meters is.  I got to that point and the watch didn’t go off.  Now I’m thinking, “Did I enter 200M into the watch or 300M?” Because there’s a big difference there for this workout. I turn around and do another one back to where I started and now I’m pretty sure the distance is wrong.  No problem I’ll check the watch and see what it says.  The only problem is that in order to do that I have to stop the workout in process.  Crap.  I stop the workout and start editing it on the watch and I still can’t tell what it says because the watch has converted everything to miles and even though I’m a smart guy I don’t know how to convert 200 or 300 meters to .19 blah blah miles.  So, I have to change the watch default to metric and then see that I indeed programmed 300m instead of 200m.  That’s not going to work. Back to the house.  Log back into Garmin Connect. Fix the workout.  Re-sync.  Back out the door. The actual workout really wasn’t that bad, but it fought me all day, it was a test of wills and I wasn’t going to let it win.  In the end this easy 30 -40 minute workout probably chewed up 2 hours of my afternoon. Just like Adam West trying to get rid of that smoking bomb. I’ll see you out there.   So, yeah, the universe is in balance… – and l’ll see you out there.
