It's Friday, March 21st, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus 1,300 people killed in Syria last week More than 1,300 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the past week in Syria, reports Open Doors. The BBC reported that a UK-based monitor has identified that “830 civilians were killed in ‘massacres' targeting Alawites on the west coast on Friday and Saturday.” Based in the Middle East, the Alawites are a sect of Islam that venerates a Muslim imam known as Ali. Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, known for his brutal dictatorship, is an Alawite himself, as was his father. The recent violence began with pro-Assad forces who attacked soldiers associated with the new government of Syria. Isaiah 59:7 says, “Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. They pursue evil schemes; acts of violence mark their ways.” Although the violence doesn't seem to be targeting Syrian Christians, followers of Jesus are scared in the midst of the violence. That's why on Sunday, March 9, many churches did not hold their Sunday services. Trump dismantles Department of Education President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to start dismantling the Department of Education. TRUMP: “Today we take a very historic action that was 45 years in the making. In a few moments, I will sign an Executive Order to begin eliminating the Federal Department of Education once and for all. (applause) Everybody knows it's right.” Immediately after the signing, Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, the chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said in a post on X that he will “submit legislation” to accomplish Trump's goal of shutting down the Department of Education “as soon as possible.” Attorney General Pam Bondi investigating Tesla attacks as terrorism On Tuesday morning, five Tesla vehicles were set on fire in Las Vegas with Molotov cocktails and shot with a gun at a Tesla Collision Center.  That was the tenth such attack on Teslas since Trump's inauguration on January 20th, reports Fox News.  The Left has also violently targeted Teslas or Tesla dealerships in Salem, Oregon, Loveland, Colorado, Owings Mills, Maryland, Littleton, Massachusetts, Tigard, Oregon, North Charlston, South Carolina, Seattle, Washington, Dedham, Massachusetts, and Kansas City, Missouri. Attorney General Pam Bondi called the recent spate of arson attacks and vandalism against Tesla vehicles "nothing short of domestic terrorism" and promised harsh punishments for perpetrators if they are caught, reports ABC News. There's been a clear uptick in attacks on Teslas and Tesla dealerships since President Donald Trump took office and empowered Elon Musk to oversee a new Department of Government Efficiency that's slashing government spending. Appearing on Fox News, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was direct. LEAVITT: “President Trump condemns this violence. He is determined to restore law and order in our country, and he will ensure that the harshest penalties are pursued for those who are engaging in this vicious violence that we have seen targeted at this American company, Tesla, dealerships, Tesla employees and also innocent Americans who have chosen to drive these vehicles, many of them, ironically, are likely Democrats. “There is a major double standard here. The Democrats used to be the greatest cheerleaders for electric vehicles and for Tesla, the company, until Elon Musk decided to support and vote for Donald Trump. “So, the Trump Derangement Syndrome from the Left is on true display with these attacks. It is getting dangerous, and the White House wholeheartedly condemns it, and we applaud Attorney General Pam Bondi for investigating these acts as domestic terrorism, because that is what they are.” Will Dr. Oz support abortion and transgenderism now? Senate confirmation proceedings are underway for Dr. Mehmet Oz, President Donald Trump's choice for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services administrator. Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri is seeking answers about the TV personality's past liberal stances on abortion and transgender issues, reports LifeSiteNews.com. As recently as 2019, Oz had attacked abortion bans because he disputed that the heartbeat begins at six weeks gestation despite scientific proof. Appearing on The Breakfast Club radio show, Oz also indicated that fetal viability was the only reasonable benchmark for gestational protection. OZ: “If the child was viable outside the womb, then you don't want to kill that child. If the child was not going to be able to survive outside the mom, then the mom runs the show. This is a hard issue for everybody. I get it. But just being logical about it, if you think that the moment of conception, you've got a life, then why would you even wait six weeks?” Later, Dr. Oz made this remark. OZ: “If someone, deep in their heart, feels that the moment of conception is a human life, and they just can't deal with that life being harmed, they got to be heard. They can't get ignored. But that doesn't mean that's what the rule of the land is.” Plus, in 2010, Oz emerged as a critical, early backer of “transitioning” gender-confused minors, running an hour-long special about “transgender children” that promoted a 15-year-old girl who had undergone a double mastectomy at age 14 and an eight-year-old boy being raised as a girl named “Josie.” Over the course of his 2022 Senatorial campaign, Oz backtracked on both issues, declaring himself “100% Pro-Life” and denying that he supported transitioning minors, claiming that his hosting of the opposite position did not constitute endorsement. Steve Lawson: “I have sinned grievously.” And finally, former Pastor Steven Lawson, age 73, a prominent figure in the Reformed/Calvinist movement, has acknowledged that he has “sinned grievously,” speaking out for the first time about the September 20th scandal that removed him from ministry, reports The Christian Post.  Once a teaching fellow at Ligonier Ministries and the dean of Doctor of Ministry Studies at The Master's Seminary, Lawson, a married man, allegedly had a 5-year affair with a woman in her late 20s. In a series of now-deleted X posts, Phil Johnson, Director of Grace to You with John MacArthur, said last September that Lawson only informed the elders at Trinity Bible Church after "the girl's father had confronted Steve and threatened exposure. This was not a noble confession.” In an X post this past Wednesday, Lawson wrote: “I have sinned grievously against the Lord, against my wife, my family, and against countless numbers of you by having a sinful relationship with a woman not my wife. I am deeply broken that I have betrayed and deceived my wife, devastated my children, brought shame to the name of Christ, reproach upon His church, and harm to many ministries.” Lawson added, “I have been undergoing extensive counseling for the last five months to face the hard questions I need to address. I have dealt with sin issues that have been painfully exposed in my heart. I have submitted myself in weekly accountability to two pastors and to the elders of a local congregation, who have shepherded my soul.” 1 Timothy 3:1-2 says, “Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, March 21st, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate   Thank you for your continued support!Description:  What is being left out of the conversation when it comes to Jimmy Carter, and why are many of his significant achievements under attack today? He created a national energy policy that married conservation with developing alternatives and getting off oil, passed the Superfund Act, created the Federal Department of Education and negotiated the Panama Canal treaty — a deal that Trump slammed earlier this week as he threatened to regain control of Panama. In this episode, Laura is on the ground in Georgia for Carter's funeral events, and speaks with people who came from all around the country to pay their respects. How are Americans remembering the 39th president? Many obituaries have excluded the October Surprise by which the release of US hostages held in Iran was delayed until Ronald Reagan's election day, and Carter's critiques of Israeli violations of international law and his warning that cutting off non-violent options for Palestinians under Israel's occupation would inevitably explode, making both Israel and the Palestinians less secure. What should we make of the notion that he “failed” during his presidency? Join us as we explore why Carter's legacy is so relevant today. All that, plus a commentary from Laura.“Carter had established the US-China relationship and this year is the 45th anniversary of US-China relationship normalization. Over the past 40 years, he had the great policy to help the Chinese people, help China to develop, and that changed millions of people's life.” - Richard Li“[Jimmy Carter] was accused of being antisemitic. Imagine the president who removed Israel's largest enemy from the battlefield, Egypt, could be considered antisemitic is so beyond the pale. He was so committed to Israel's security, which he knew could only happen when the Palestinian people would have their state.” - Karin Ryan“There's different philosophies on how private sector and public sector labor unions are viewed, and each one of them is unique in how they work for their contracts. But overall, collective bargaining is an important thing. And I think the general consensus of everybody historically is that President Carter supported collective bargaining, and collective bargaining is what this country was founded on.” - Greg WaddlePeople Featured in This Episode:• Karin Ryan, the Senior Policy Advisor on Human Rights and Special Representative on Women and Girls at The Carter Center• Richard Li, Vice President, Chinese American Business Association of Atlanta • Greg Waddle, President, IATSE Local 479 Watch the broadcast episode cut for time at our YouTube channel and airing on PBS stations across the country Subscribe to episode notes via Patreon Music In the Middle:  flashback to the Jimmy Carter Campaign Song “Why Not the Best” from 1976.  And additional music included- "Steppin"  and "All The Ways" by Podington Bear. Related Laura Flanders Show Episodes:•  Angela Davis: A Revolutionary Roadmap for Building a Better Future, Watch / Listen-Podcast- Episode, Full Conversation•  Israel, Hamas & Universal Human Rights: Former UN Official Craig Mokhiber Describes Path Forward, Watch / Listen-Podcast- Episode, Full Conversation• How to Fortify Democracy in 2024, Watch / Listen-Podcast- Episode Related Articles and Resources:•  Jimmy Carter Presidential Library video archives•  Carterland, a documentary by Jim & Will Pattiz released in 2021, Learn More• Jimmy Carter Tribute website, Learn More  Laura Flanders and Friends Crew: Laura Flanders, along with Sabrina Artel, Jeremiah Cothren, Veronica Delgado, Janet Hernandez, Jeannie Hopper, Sarah Miller, Nat Needham, David Neuman, and Rory O'Conner. Among the points: return school prayer, make hiring and firing decisions based on political loyalty, and funnel public school money to private schools through vouchers. Oh, and eliminate the Federal Department of Education. What will that mean, and how can we be prepared? Tim and Producer Jess break it down. Project 2025 would fundamentally change public education, experts sayThe Hill, By Lexi Lonas, on July 12, 2024https://thehill.com/homenews/education/4766919-project-2025-trump-campaign-biden-heritage-foundation-public-education/ Project 2025 represents a significant conservative push to radically transform U.S. public education, primarily aimed at dismantling existing structures and reorienting educational content and funding. This initiative, developed by the Heritage Foundation and supported by Trump allies, proposes several sweeping changes that could dramatically affect the quality and equity of education. The plan includes the elimination of the Federal Department of Education, which would remove the primary federal oversight body responsible for setting educational standards and ensuring equity across states. Critics argue that this move could lead to a severe reduction in federal support for public schools, especially those serving low-income communities, as it plans to dismantle Title I funding, which is crucial for under-resourced schools.Additionally, Project 2025 advocates for the privatization of student loans, a move that could limit access to higher education for many students and expose them to predatory lending practices. The restructuring of K-12 funding and curriculum under Project 2025 is seen as an effort to undermine civil rights protections and diversity initiatives, potentially transforming public schools into ideological spaces aligned with specific political or religious viewpoints. The initiative's potential impact includes skewed educational content, which might prioritize certain ideologies over a comprehensive and diverse curriculum. This shift could erode academic freedom and limit students' exposure to a broad range of perspectives, potentially stifling critical thinking and intellectual growth.Key Points:Elimination of the Federal Department of Education: This would remove oversight and support for public education, potentially leading to inequities in funding and educational quality.Privatization of Student Loans: This could restrict access to higher education and expose students to harmful lending practices.Dismantling Title I Funding: Targeted funding for low-income schools could be cut, exacerbating educational disparities.Changes in Curriculum: The plan suggests a shift towards ideologically-driven content, potentially diminishing academic diversity and freedom.Criticism: The proposal is viewed by many as a threat to public education, with concerns about increasing division and undermining the foundational principles of equal and comprehensive education. The discussion highlights the broader implications of Project 2025, emphasizing how these proposed changes could reshape the U.S. educational landscape and the potential risks involved in such a radical reorientation. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.30.4 featuring Cynthia McDonald, Scott Dickie, "Eli" (Eli Slack) and Jonathan RoudabushBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

The data package published on the darknet comprised around 1.3 million files. Once the data had been downloaded, the NCSC took the lead in systematically categorising and triaging all documents relevant to the Federal Administration. The results showed that the volume of data relevant to the Federal Administration comprised around 65,000 documents, or approximately 5% of the total published data set. The majority of these files belonged to Xplain (47,413) with a share of over 70%; around 14% (9,040) belonged to the Federal Administration. Around 95% of the Federal Administration’s files belonged to the administrative units of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP): the Federal Office of Justice, Federal Office of Police, State Secretariat for Migration and the internal IT service centre ISC-FDJP. With just over 3% of the data, the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) is slightly affected and the other departments are only marginally affected in terms of volume. Proportion of sensitive data. Sensitive content such as personal data, technical information, classified information and passwords was found in around half of the Federal Administration's files (5,182). Personal data such as names, email addresses, telephone numbers and postal addresses were found in 4,779 of these files. In addition, 278 files contained technical information such as documentation on IT systems, software requirement documents or architectural descriptions, 121 objects were classified in accordance with the Information Protection Ordinance and 4 objects contained readable passwords. A threat actor is creating fake Skype, Google Meet, and Zoom meetings, mimicking these popular collaboration applications to spread various commodity malware that can steal sensitive data from both Android and Windows users. Additional Information. What is a "Data Breach"? A data breach is a security violation, in which sensitive, protected or confidential data is copied, transmitted, viewed, stolen, altered or used by an individual unauthorized to do so. What is "Malware"? Malware (a portmanteau for malicious software) is any software intentionally designed to cause disruption to a computer, server, client, or computer network, leak private information, gain unauthorized access to information or systems, deprive access to information, or which unknowingly interferes with the user's computer security and privacy. What is a "Payload"? In the context of a computer virus or worm, the payload is the portion of the malware which performs malicious action; deleting data, sending spam or encrypting data. In addition to the payload, such malware also typically has overhead code aimed at simply spreading itself, or avoiding detection. What is "Phishing"? Phishing is a form of social engineering where attackers deceive people into revealing sensitive information or installing malware such as ransomware. Phishing attacks have become increasingly sophisticated and often transparently mirror the site being targeted, allowing the attacker to observe everything while the victim is navigating the site, and transverse any additional security boundaries with the victim. Social engineering (security) In the context of information security, social engineering is the psychological manipulation of people into performing actions or divulging confidential information. A type of confidence trick for the purpose of information gathering, fraud, or system access, it differs from a traditional "con" in that it is often one of many steps in a more complex fraud scheme. What is "Information Security" (InfoSec)? Information security, sometimes shortened to InfoSec, is the practice of protecting information by mitigating information risks. It is part of information risk management. Information Security Attributes: Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability (C.I.A.). Information Systems are composed in three main portions, hardware, software and communications with the purpose to help identify and apply information security industry standards, as mechanisms of protection and prevention, at three levels or layers: physical, personal and organizational. Essentially, procedures or policies are implemented to tell administrators, users and operators how to use products to ensure information security within the organizations. What is "Risk management"? Risk management is the identification, evaluation, and prioritization of risks followed by coordinated and economical application of resources to minimize, monitor, and control the probability or impact of unfortunate events or to maximize the realization of opportunities. What is a "Vulnerability" (computing)? Vulnerabilities are flaws in a computer system that weaken the overall security of the device/system. Vulnerabilities can be weaknesses in either the hardware itself, or the software that runs on the hardware. What is an "Attack Surface"? The attack surface of a software environment is the sum of the different points (for "attack vectors") where an unauthorized user (the "attacker") can try to enter data to or extract data from an environment. Keeping the attack surface as small as possible is a basic security measure. What is an "Attack Vector"? In computer security, an attack vector is a specific path, method, or scenario that can be exploited to break into an IT system, thus compromising its security. The term was derived from the corresponding notion of vector in biology. An attack vector may be exploited manually, automatically, or through a combination of manual and automatic activity. What is "Standardization"? Standardization is the process of implementing and developing technical standards based on the consensus of different parties that include firms, users, interest groups, standards organizations and governments. Standardization can help maximize compatibility, interoperability, safety, repeatability, or quality. It can also facilitate a normalization of formerly custom processes. List of computer standards. List of technical standard organizations. What is a "Replay attack"? A replay attack is a form of network attack in which valid data transmission is maliciously or fraudulently repeated or delayed. Another way of describing such an attack is: "an attack on a security protocol using a replay of messages from a different context into the intended (or original and expected) context, thereby fooling the honest participant(s) into thinking they have successfully completed the protocol run." What is a "Man-in-the-middle attack"? In cryptography and computer security, a man-in-the-middle, ..., attack is a cyberattack where the attacker secretly relays and possibly alters the communications between two parties who believe that they are directly communicating with each other, as the attacker has inserted themselves between the two parties. What is "Transport Layer Security" (TLS)? Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a cryptographic protocol designed to provide communications security over a computer network. The protocol is widely used in applications such as email, instant messaging, and voice over IP, but its use in securing HTTPS remains the most publicly visible. What is a "Handshake" (computing)?. In computing, a handshake is a signal between two devices or programs, used to, e.g., authenticate, coordinate. An example is the handshaking between a hypervisor and an application in a guest virtual machine. What is Security theater? The practice of taking security measures that are considered to provide the feeling of improved security while doing little or nothing to achieve it. Speaking to Blick, Markus Sporndli, who is a spokesman for the Federal Department of Finance, explained that the rate for fines on a daily basis could start at 30 Swiss Francs (£26). He added that the maximum fine could be up to 3,000 Swiss Francs (£2,667). And companies who deliberately go over their gas quotas could face punishment. (Click Here for Full Article)

An Irish teacher has been jailed for refusing to call a boy a girl, Queen Elizabeth II has died, and jail time is being threatened in Europe for turning the heat up too high this winter. … and more on today’s CrossPolitic Daily News Brief. My name is Toby Sumpter and today is Friday, September 9, 2022. https://nypost.com/2022/09/06/teacher-enoch-burke-jailed-over-trans-pronouns-flap/ A teacher in Ireland has been suspended from work and then jailed for contempt of court after he refused to use the correct pronouns to address a transgender student. Enoch Burke was arrested on Monday for violating a court order barring him from teaching at Wilson’s Hospital School in Westmeath, or even being present there, the news site RTE.ie reported. Judge Michael Quinn found Burke guilty of violating an order made by the High Court last week and sent him to Mountjoy Prison, where he will remain until either he purges his contempt or the court gives further orders. The teacher remained defiant in the face of jail time, telling the judge that “it is insanity” that he would be led out of the courtroom and taken to prison for refusing to give up his Christian beliefs. “I love my school, with its motto Res Non Verba, ‘Actions not words,’ but I am here today because I said I would not call a boy a girl,” Burke told the court. The scandal surrounding Burke began unfolding after the educator, who teaches history, politics and German at the school in Multyfarnham, County Westmeath, refused to address a transitioning student as “they” instead of “he.” Burke’s stance prompted school officials to place him on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a disciplinary process. But the teacher refused to stay away from campus, despite an injunction that was issued barring him from going to the school, or attempting to teach. On Friday, the judge issued an order to arrest Burke after he was found sitting in an empty classroom at the school. Burke was taken into custody at the school on Monday and taken directly to court, where he told the judge he could not comply with the injunction because it would violate his conscience. “I am a teacher and I don’t want to go to prison,” Burke told the court. “I want to be in my classroom today, that’s where I was this morning when I was arrested.” He added: “Transgenderism is against my Christian belief. It is contrary to the scriptures, contrary to the ethos of the Church of Ireland and of my school.” FLF Conference Plug Do you like Jesus & beer? She died peacefully on Thursday afternoon at her Scottish estate, where she had spent much of the summer. The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change. Her son King Charles III said the death of his beloved mother was a "moment of great sadness" for him and his family and that her loss would be "deeply felt" around the world. He said: "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. "I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world." During the coming period of mourning, he said he and his family would be "comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held". The King and his wife, Camilla, now Queen Consort, will return to London on Friday, Buckingham Palace said. Senior royals had gathered at Balmoral after the Queen's doctors became concerned about her health earlier in the day. All the Queen's children travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision. Her grandson and now heir to the throne, Prince William, and his brother, Prince Harry, also gathered there. Prime Minister Liz Truss, who was appointed by the Queen on Tuesday, said the monarch was the rock on which modern Britain was built, who had "provided us with the stability and strength that we needed". Speaking about the new King, she said: "We offer him our loyalty and devotion, just as his mother devoted so much, to so many, for so long. "And with the passing of the second Elizabethan age, we usher in a new era in the magnificent history of our great country, exactly as Her Majesty would have wished, by saying the words 'God save the King'." https://twitter.com/realchrisrufo/status/1567928907411910656?s=20&t=jRqdyIeyvfjUj4nDBZFGsg Meanwhile, earlier this morning Uju Anya, Critical Race Theorist at Carnegie Mellon University tweeted: “I heard the chief monarch of a thieving raping genocidl empire is finally dying. May her pain be excruciating.” Twitter did delete the Tweet as violating its rules, but i a follow up tweet she wrote: “If anyone expects me to express anything but disdain for the monarch who supervised a government that sponsored the genocide that massacred and displaced half my family and the consequences of which those alive today are still trying to overcome, you can keep wishing upon a star.” Another tweet insists that Queen Elizabeth was not a remnant of colonial times but an active participant in colonialism, “she actively tried to stop independence movements & she tried to keep newly independent colonies form leaving the commonwealth. The evil she did was enough” and a video is linked to an elderly Kenyan woman who says she was tortured with axes during Kenya’s struggle for independence from British colonial rule. The woman in the video demands that Elizabeth pay her back for what was done to to her. Uju Anya writes so-called “anti-racist” curriculum for public schools as well as Diversity Equity and Inclusion training materials. I’m sure it’s doing a lot of good. Not really. The simple point I want to make here is that this is a great example of how CRT is not helping anyone at all. Let’s grant the possibility that the history is being presented accurately here. I suspect that there might be more to it than is being presented, but let’s just grant it for the sake of the argument. You cannot build families, cultures, or nations on this kind of exacting demand for justice. You cannot get it. It’s not possible. And it’s not possible for two reasons at least: first, you can’t quantify the damage and harm and hurt. Can you put that woman’s tears in a bottle and measure them out? When would it be enough? It would never be enough. And second, what standard would you use to measure anyway? By what standard? If you appeal to Darwin, you just threw away your standard. If you appeal to Marx, then you are only appealing to a momentary revolution and you’re condemned to eternal feuding, since once the oppressed class gets put in charge they will no doubt oppress the previously ruling class, and we will just play see-saw with revenge. The only way out of this is the blood of Jesus. The only way out of this tailspin of feuding bitterness and rage and spite and hate is through forgiveness in the blood of Christ. This is true for England, America, and Kenya, and all the nations of the earth. There will be blood. The only question is whose blood and will it be efficacious blood. The blood of Jesus is efficacious. It actually takes away sin and guilt. It actually allows you to lay down your arms, lay down your vengeance, and forgive. May Uju Anja, the people of Kenya, and all people find peace in the Cross of Christ. As the Queen herself once said, “History teaches us we… need saving from ourselves, from our recklessness or our greed. God sent into the world… neither a philosopher or a general… but a Saviour with the power to forgive.” Classical Conversations Classical Conversations supports homeschooling parents by cultivating the love of learning through a Christian worldview in fellowship with other families. The cost of natural gas in Europe has increased more than tenfoldamid the fallout from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while Russia severed natural gas shipments through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline last week. According to a report from Swiss news outlet Blick, the nation’s Federal Law on National Economic Supply permits authorities to fine and imprison residents who consume too much gas if energy rationing becomes necessary. Those who fail to comply with the temperature mandates could receive sanctions between 30 and 3,000 Swiss francs, the equivalent of $31 and $3,090, Federal Department of Finance spokesman Markus Spörndli told the outlet. Those found intentionally violating the statute would receive up to three years in prison, and those found with negligent violations could be forced to pay 180 days’ worth of fines. Beyond the temperature controls, residents will be unable to heat swimming pools, saunas, radiant heaters, or warm air tents, while hot water will not be allowed to reach temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius, or 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The member states of the Swiss Confederacy have until September 22 to voice concerns over the law. In the United States, a heatwave that has threatened power supplies in California led utility company Xcel Energy to lock the thermostats of 22,000 people in Colorado at 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the interest of protecting grid capacity. The residents had previously opted into an incentive program that let the firm “ease the strain on the electrical grid” during the “hottest summer days.” The European Union has adopted the official policy of becoming “a climate-neutral society” by 2050 in accordance with the European Green Deal and the Paris Agreement. Citing the failure of hydropower facilities amid drought conditions, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen likewise proposed a “mandatory target” for reducing usage in the European Union, of which Switzerland is not a member. “If you look at the costs of electricity, there are peak demands. And this is what is expensive, because, in these peak demands, the expensive gas comes into the market,” she commented on Wednesday. “So what we have to do is to flatten the curve and avoid the peak demands. We will propose a mandatory target for reducing electricity use at peak hours.” Flatten the curve. Where have we heard that language before?
