The Toby Gribben Show

Born and bred amidst the vibrant pulse of Chicago, Kingsley's journey through music began before she could even form words, her melodies echoing through the halls of her childhood home. As the third eldest daughter in a bustling household of eight, her passion for performance and song burned brightly. From Disney tunes to impromptu concerts for friends and family, Kingsley's voice was her earliest instrument, an instrument she honed alongside her self-taught skills on guitar and piano. At the tender age of 10, Kingsley, along with two of her sisters, ignited the stage as the heart and soul of the family band, Heartfilled, drawing inspiration from the infectious pop melodies of The Jonas Brothers. Fuelled by her love for creating music, she ventured into self-production, birthing her debut single "Lie Detector" in the cosy confines of her parent's basement studio.Driven by her unwavering passion, Kingsley embarked on a dual journey, pursuing degrees in Vocal Performance and Business Administration during her college years. It was here that she not only fine-tuned her musical prowess but also nurtured her entrepreneurial spirit, laying the groundwork for her future endeavours.Upon graduating, Kingsley set her sights on the fertile grounds of Portland, Oregon, where she quickly immersed herself in the local music scene. Kingsley's ascent within the industry was swift and resolute from her humble beginnings as a marketing intern at The Old Church to her pivotal role as Head of Marketing at The Roseland Theater.Yet, the allure of the stage beckoned, and Kingsley heeded its call, stepping into the limelight as a beacon of Portland's dynamic underground music scene. With a sound that defied convention and a spirit that soared beyond boundaries, she captivated audiences far and wide, from sold-out shows to legendary recording sessions at Abbey Road.Kingsley's musical odyssey reached new heights with the release of her latest album, "Crying on Holidays" (2021), a testament to her evolution as an artist and storyteller. In the wake of the global pandemic, she reinvented herself, transcending geographical borders to emerge as a beacon of resilience and empowerment.Beyond her musical pursuits, Kingsley's influence extends into the realms of beauty and wellness, where she has carved out a niche as an entrepreneur and thought leader. Through her lipstick line, meditation retreats, and unwavering commitment to authenticity, she has cultivated a community that celebrates self-love and inner strength. As she embarks on releasing her third studio album, Kingsley remains steadfast in her dedication to crafting music that resonates deeply with her audience. With each note and lyric, she invites listeners into a world where vulnerability is embraced, and authenticity reigns supreme. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

One of my favorite insights from Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch in episode #75: “Maybe 1994 or 1995, a switch came on, and I started writing better songs. There's no doubt about that. I remember writing a song called ‘Dog on Wheels' at the start of 1995, and then quickly after that, I wrote a song called ‘The State I Am In,' a song called ‘Lord Anthony,' ‘Sleep The Clock Around,' and it suddenly started flowing. There was a moment when I been in my favorite cafe, which I practically lived in — the Grosvenor Cafe — and I started getting the idea for ‘The State I Am In.' I had a little tune and I took it outside because it was too noisy in the cafe, and the words started to flow. It started coming easily, riding on top of the tune. And I didn't have to ponder the words. And actually I kind of didn't know where the ideas were coming from, I didn't know what I was saying — it all tumbled out.” Belle & Sebastian's awesome new album, A Bit Of Previous, is out now. Rhiannon Rodriguez-Betts is one of the most talented lighting directors that there is around. As a multi-specialist, Rhiannon is equally comfortable building a stage, setting up equipment, sending out rigging points or setting up artist hospitality. A multipotentialite and a creative genius, she sheds some light on the vital mindset of following your passions and sustaining joy and energy in a demanding industry. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ The importance of enjoying what you do. Rhiannon shares that the nature of her job can be highly stressful, but she lives by the idea of why work in the entertainment industry if you don't find it entertaining?  ✔️ Find possibilities in the mundane of daily life. "We uncover something else to do with our time besides being upset and finding entertainment in whatever it is that we're doing." ✔️ To handle different and difficult personalities at work can be very challenging for Rhiannon over the years. Still, she considers opportunities to grow and figure out how to communicate with fellow people. It is essential to listen to what it is that they're saying and hopefully not react poorly.  ✔️Why not get into this exciting profession? There is an international alliance of theatrical and stage employees all over the United States and Canada. You can connect with a local one nearby, see if they accept applications, and give them a shot. There are lots of opportunities all over the world as well to try.   ✔️Show up in the world with your spiritual integrity, your authority, and quit playing small. Be a lighthouse and shine your light from the inside out.  Rhiannon Rodriguez-Betts is regarded as one of the most sought-after lighting directors and stage crew members in the city of Portland. She takes an artistic approach each time she designs a show with strong attention to the details laid out by each artist. Rhiannon's artistry can be seen at all of Portland's major concert facilities, including the Roseland Theater, Crystal Ballroom, and sporting events at the Moda Center. As a multi-specialist, Rhiannon is equally as comfortable building a stage, setting up equipment, sending out rigging points or setting up artist hospitality as a lighting director.  Rhiannon has a solid commitment to her community and often answers calls to activism. One such answer brought her to serve a term as President of her union International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 28; another saw her serving in the Oregon Employment Department Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance Benefit Workgroup. She is dedicated to assisting others wherever she can. THIS IS A MASSIVE ONE! For me at least. Teppei is one of my favorite guitar players from my favorite band, Thrice. Jeston Porter and I were able to sit down in the basement of the Roseland Theater in Portland and nerd out a few weeks ago. It was a wonderful experience and Teppei was fantastic to talk to. We explored a lot of areas, but one thing of particular importance was the theft of their gear from their storage unit. We want to try to get Teppei's Les Paul back to him, and give you the chance to win a rad fuzz pedal! We are giving away a Fender The Trapper Fuzz and some signed Thrice gear. All you have to do is navigate over to Instagram, and share THIS POST with the hashtag #FindTeppeisLesPaul. On Februray 17, 2020 I will scroll through the posts using that hashtag and randomly select a winner for the pedal. It is a long shot, but lets give it a go folks!
