Blogger and NYT Bestselling author Russ Crandall comes on to talk about how he created his Domestic Man blog and grew it to big heights. Russ went from someone who had massive autoimmune issues in his 20s that doctors couldn't figure out, to figuring out how diet affected his health. After a while of learning to cook foods that didn't cause inflammation, Russ started posting his recipes and over time his blog grew and he accidentally became an influencer himself and has since written several books. You can check him out on Instagram @thedomesticman or his new book The Heritage Cookbook.

The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 340: The Paleo Mom Workshop (0:00) Intro Sarah still has a voice after her epic Workshop and Retreat at 1440 Multiversity! Sarah says it was an incredible experience. The location, 1440 Multiversity, was amazing. They were steps from a redwood forest! The food was incredible - tons of vegetables, delicious coffee, plenty to eat. The presentation stage was gorgeous. Good news! Sarah will be doing another retreat next year so if you missed out, stay tuned for more on that. Participants were able to take advantage of free classes like yoga and tai chi between Sarah's lectures. And Sarah says the people were the best part. It's so special to connect with her community and see them connecting with each other. Attendees had 3 major highlights: 1. The new info Sarah presented (a lot of which isn't even on her blog) 2. Being able to go somewhere and eat 100% AIP food 3. The community and connections that were made Sarah can sum it up in one word: "Profound" (14:50) Sarah's top 3 picks for information nuggets If you wished you were there, Sarah had a film crew record all the sessions which means a virtual version of the workshop will be available for purchase on her website! Keep an eye out for that in the next couple weeks. 1. Sarah did a deep dive into gut microbiome health. Most of this info hasn't been shared anywhere yet. The one that got the cheers was dark chocolate! The polyphenols in cacao support the growth of good bacteria and inhibit the bad. 2. Sarah did a presentation on healthy weight loss and maintenance. Here are the major takeaways: Eat at a modest caloric deficit Get 30% of calories from protein, 30-40% carbs, and 30-40% healthy fats Lots of vegetables and fiber Lots of sleep Hydration Dial in Vitamin D status Exercise - even just get a getting a walk is one of the best appetite regulators Distracted eating: if you eat while in front of a screen, you'll eat more and you'll eat more later in the day. Family meals or eating socially don't qualify as distracted eating. 3. The overall arch of the presentations: History of nutrition science Impact of scientific studies and how to understand them Foundations of health (diet and lifestyle) Modifying the foundations for different chronic diseases Microbiome Healthy weight loss The problem with fad diets and how to troubleshoot How our health choices translate to the environment and global sustainability (25:20) Wrap up Stacy reunited with her local paleo community this weekend! Russ Crandall, from The Domestic Man, has a new book coming out which Stacy is very excited for! Keep an eye out for that! Regarding chocolate, the benefits are in the cacao so the higher the chocolate percentage the better. Get your questions in! We want to hear from you! And the family of Russ Crandall, The Domestic Man, will be joining as well! Stacy is hosting not one, but two Thanksgiving parties cause she's just an overachiever like that ;) Sarah doesn't have a circular pie dish so she's going to make a rectangular pumpkin pie! She's using the crust recipe from Paleo Principles, not the one from the blog. Sarah's The Best Paleo Pumpkin Pie recipe is Stacy's favorite! She loves the pumpkin custard filling. Happy birthday to Sarah! She celebrated her birthday on Saturday. (12:40) This is a check in show! Since Sarah and Stacy are getting together in person this week, you can be sure something fun will come out of it! Be on the look out for Facebook Lives, video recording, and who knows what else! Stacy shares a lesson she's learned in the past couple years: gifting experiences over things. The boys have really gotten into this and look forward to it. Currently they're talking about gifting their next vacation! (Last year the experience gift was a cruise) They've also been doing a lot of crafting together and want to gift that to their grandmother because they've learned to recognize the value in spending time together. Click here to listen in iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 263: Asking Us Everything Part 2 Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:41) We're back for more AMA! We think this is a lot of fun. Paleo Principles update: We're at 688 pages. It's WAY TOO MANY! How did you write such a long book? No one knows. Maybe we'll do a workout video with it. Meanwhile, Stacy's kids are going to three different schools and one of them took the bus to middle school at 6:30! It's been exhausting! More AMA questions! Fun questions we love and haven't been asked before! Are either of you superstitious? (8:21) Stacy believes that people can find themselves in advantageous or disadvantageous situations, but there's not some force in the world that notices when you follow superstitions Sarah does do some superstitions out of habit, but doesn't think she actually believes that they have power. Sarah does say she believes in karma and also believes that people are meant to do things, but also believes in the chaos and randomness in the universe. There is some cognitive dissonance there. Stacy doesn't know why she does some superstitions, and catches herself doing them despite not really believing in them. They're fun for kids too. Which character from The Walking Dead do you most identify with? (12:36) Stacy definitely identifies with Maggie because she's kind and a leader who is into family. Sarah doesn't watch the show. Stacy modifies it to which character from Game of Thrones do you identify with? (13:03) Stacy identifies with Sansa and Dany Sarah took an online test that said she was a Robb Stark because of her leadership and strong moral compass. But Sarah also really loves Dany for similar reasons. Sarah also identifies with Samwell Tarly because she too would be in the back as a craven. Stacy and Matt love Tormund Giantsbane and Samwell Tarly as well. If you had to live in a house with other bloggers for a reality TV show, who would you choose? (16:18) Number one for both is Russ Crandall, The Domestic Man. Stacy also mentions Bill and Hayley from Primal Palate, Stacy wonders what kind of show this is? Are we casting for a competition? Because we're not naming our bad guys! Really, check out who we tag all the time on social media Stacy: RealFoodLiz Liz Wolfe, That Paleo Couple, and A Tribe Beyond Blessed, Kaitlyn from Grassfed Girl Sarah: Mickey and Angie from Autoimmune Wellness, Charissa Talbot from No Cook Paleo, Kirsten Peterson from Vibrant Life Army Wife, and Denise Minger. Check out our Live from Paleo FX House show for more! Is once a week for dessert too much? (19:48) Sarah: it depends. Is it going to satisfy you so you won't crave it anymore or will it just trigger more cravings? Stacy and Sarah both tend to be "fall off the wagon" types. In that case, maybe best to avoid it. What is your most hated activity in Strongman or Crossfit? Stacy: Running. It's why I started Strongman. Sarah: Weighted lunges or running with a weight. Stacy loved the feeling of being too sore to do normal activities. She always said "Bring it on!" What is the most often cooked meal in your house? (26:06) Stacy: Meatloaf and Chicken thighs. Sarah: roast chicken or liver burgers. Is there anyone in the paleo world you still get nervous talking to? (26:30) Stacy: No, not in the paleo world Sarah got giggly when talking to Mark (Definitely go back and listen to that one!) Sarah gets excited when people know who she is. Like Art Devany and Dr. David Perlmutter Stacy has learned that people are just people and are just like everyone else. Stacy says only a few people would intimidate her or make her squee. One of them is a baby sloth. Kristen Bell's sloth spatula is on backorder, but it is here. How tall are you? (33:23) Stacy: 5'7". People always think she's taller though. Sarah is 5'5 3/4", but she always says she's 5'6". Can you do a foreign accent? (36:33) Stacy: It would be terrible. However, Stacy and her stepsister would go to the beach and pretend to be French with the names "Ginger Bread" and "Carry-on Bag". Sarah: I do bad American versions of foreign accents and uses them to play with her kids. Which is your favorite of your books (38:54) That's like asking which is your favorite kid! They're all our favorites But if pressed, Stacy likes Real Life Paleo because it's how we really eat, but Matt likes Beyond Bacon because its a more sophisticated foodie book. Sarah: I really like my new one, Paleo Principles. It's like my previous books put together and made better! Rate and review us. Goodbye! "Food is what you are, and you are what you eat. Food serves multiple purposes. On one hand, it's to nourish your body with physical things that it needs, but you can also use food to soothe emotions, avoid emotions, as entertainment, or when you feel sad. It allows for a certain degree of emotional manipulation." - Tony Federico Food is an important part of our everyday life, but sometimes we allow unhealthy, processed foods to manipulate our bodies' health and emotions. Unfortunately, eating healthy is not always an easy switch to make with big multinational corporations selling and promoting foods everywhere we look. However, we have the ultimate power to make the decision to decide what we eat every day. Take a moment look inside yourself and ask if your relationship with food is a healthy one. It's okay to admit that it's not a healthy relationship and that you're ready for a change in your life. On this week's podcast, host of the Paleo Magazine Radio podcast, Tony Federico, shares with us how he overcame an unhealthy relationship with food and how making a goal to live a more Paleolithic lifestyle has transformed his body and his life. How To Create A Healthy Relationship With Food As humans that operate from the reptilian brain, what do we ultimately need to thrive? We need real food. Take a moment to think about where our ancestors found their source of food. It wasn't from the processed food section from the grocery store, but from real foods like fruits, nits, seeds, vegetables and different meats. If you are what you eat, then your relationship with food can say a lot about whether you are tuned in with your body or not. Tony himself struggled for quite some time to create a healthy relationship with food. At one point, he found himself in a cycle of doing unhealthy amounts of exercise and eating processed foods that he believed to be healthy. In looking back on his lifestyle, Tony discusses on the show how his obsession of eating healthy food was called Orthorexia nervosa before it even existed. To create a healthy relationship with food, Tony shares how we first get to understand how it helps our body. How all of natural foods' nutrients, vitamins, and more give you the energy and strength to live a healthy life each day. Feeding Yourself From A Place of Love & Abundance "Maybe my body is not the enemy. Maybe I can work with this thing if I understand it."- Tony Federico on the Paleo Diet What does your life balance look like right now? Maybe the mix includes: Nutrition Relationships Career Health Friends Fitness But is everything balanced evenly? What areas do you dedicate your time to the most? Which areas are healthy and which are unhealthy? If your health and nutrition are not at the best place that they can be, you may have to change your daily nutrition. For Tony, going Paleo helped him to rethink the benefits of food and a healthy lifestyle. To give your body the love and abundance that it needs to stay healthy, real food can help give you the right mindset and positive energy that you need in your life. If you're eating unhealthy, it can throw you off balance in all six areas of your life. Reach Your Goals With Reverse Engineering One method to help you complete a goal is to do it via "reverse engineering." Reverse engineering goals is when you pick a specific goal and decide what types of systems, people, and environment you can put into place to help you reach that goal. As part of the goal, you need to have a base number, but it's very important that you have zero judgement towards that number. For example, if you want to lose 20 pounds and your base start number is 200 pounds. Don't judge that number because it will only lead to negative thinking. Instead, use it to help you see the results that you want. Next, do your homework to start planning and creating a strategy. Be responsible and have the will and commitment to do it. Even if your plan isn't working, think about what can you do to change it so that it does work? The slightest tweak can help you get to the goal that you want to complete if you have the willpower to complete it. More About Tony Federico Tony is the host of the Paleo Magazine Radio podcast, author of an eBook audio program deep dish, "Paleo Grilling: A Modern Caveman's Guide to Cooking with Fire", and Cofounder of Powerful PT, an innovative information resource for Fitness Professionals. Swimming daily has helped our kids build their confidence in the water Stacy and Sarah both are taking the summer off from big projects to play with the kids. Our Topic: The Schools of Paleo Thought (10:58)There is no central organization of Paleo, so there's room to develop different ideas from different thought leaders. We thought it would be interesting to go over the different ideas All paleo leaders agree: we're trying to eat the diet that makes us feel the best. People are individual: Stacy eats some heavy cream, but no popcorn, for example, but Sarah is the exact opposite! The similarities between philosophies are greater than the differences. Standard PaleoRobb Wolf and Loren Cordain: Grain-Free, Legume-Free, Dairy-Free, Refined sugar-free, Refined oil-free Chris Kresser and Sarah add: find the most nutrient dense foods to add to your diet Loren Cordain is also very low carb and low fat as well. His anti-green bean and anti-potato stances and anti-salt are not generally accepted The Cordain stance on lean meats is due to the idea that most meat isn't grass fed or game meats, thus not what humans are designed to eat, but he's simplified to lean meats to try to be more understood.
