Most of you will resonate with the fact that we are looking for perfect health. And living in an imperfect world doesn't make it very easy...However, Perfection is what we always aim for but progress is really what we are after in this imperfect world. And today I'm talking to someone who pretty much got me started on the pro-metabolic, logical common sense approach to nutrition, even before my nutrition schooling, and that someone is Paul Jaminet.... To me this man embodies alot of Dr Ray Peat's philosophies with regard to Both perspectives oppose omega-6 fats, support saturated fats, favor eating sufficient carbs to normalize metabolism, support eating nourishing foods like bone broth, and opposes eating inflammatory foods like wheat. Paul Jaminet is a brilliant astrophysicist with a PhD in physics from the University of California at Berkley, but I'm actually a much bigger fan of his other PHD which is the fact that he is the author of PHD - the Perfect Health Diet, (a book that changed my life and helped me get results with my clients from day 1 of implementing his knowledge into my practice.....and it was Paul's experience overcoming a chronic illness led the him to develop the views of aging and disease presented in Perfect Health Diet. He also regularly blogs at http://perfecthealthdiet.com and is currently serving as COO at a company called Angiex. Angiex is developing a novel drug class, Nuclear-Delivered Antibody-Drug Conjugates™, with the potential to generate curative therapies for malignant solid cancers of any site of origin. So I am eager to dive into that with Paul, as well as breaks down the perfect health diet philosophy so that you and I can aim for logical, common sense nutrition at a cellular level to achieve weight loss, cancer prevention, disease prevention, and really dial into that perfection we are looking for, even if we can't achive perfection. We might also discuss some trends in the pro-metabolic world that might not work for all, and why Paul takes a different approach. Enjoy this enlightening conversation. Today I’m here with Paul Jaminet, who had a very strong early influence on me with his “Perfect Health Diet.” As a key leader in the health and wellness world, he also influenced people like Chris Kresser and Mark Sisson. If you aren’t familiar with Paul, he’s MIT-educated in both physics and philosophy and has a Ph.D. in physics. After working in astrophysics, Paul became an entrepreneur and then transitioned into the natural health world after he experienced his own health problems. Paul’s also the founder and president of Angiex, a biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapies for solid cancers. It’s built on discoveries made by his wife and co-founder, Shou-Ching. They created a new class of cancer drugs, and so far the results are absolutely astounding! Normally I am not a big proponent of pharmaceuticals, but I actually invested in this company because of its potential. We talk about a wide range of topics from diet and natural health, circadian biology, and these novel cancer treatments. And without further ado, let’s jump into this fascinating episode. Episode Highlights With Paul Jaminet What the Perfect Health Diet is and how Paul created it How the work of Art DeVany impacted his work and what he learned in his own experimentation The reason he thinks carbohydrates are important (within a certain ratio) Paul's own health struggles that led to his research and experimentation for the Perfect Health Diet The gut, carb, thyroid connection and how to understand carb needs How cycling fits into an evolutionary approach and how to use it effectively Key lifestyle and nutrition interventions for health and how circadian biology plays a pivotal role How he shifted into cancer research Paul and his wife Shou-Ching's work on effective cancer treatments and what sets them apart The innovative way they are taking a two-prong approach to cancer treatment that is much less toxic and appears to be much more effective in initial trials Natural vs pharmaceutical approaches to cancer and how they work best together The things people don't know or understand about his areas of expertise And more! Fat Absorption [10:56] Matt says: Robb, Long time listener, love the content. Keep it up! My question is about fat absorption. I’ve  been dealing with some health issues the past few years and have tried several things from dirty keto to AIP keto to AIP paleo. For the past ten weeks or so I have been in the world of nose to tail carnivore and am having some success. I haven’t checked my ketones but I expect I’m in a decent level of ketosis most the time as I’m not doing any carnivore carbs like milk or honey. My meals (usually 3 per day) are around 8-10oz meat/organs plus added fat. The meat is usually a leaner cut for cost efficiency; sirloin tip roast is a go to. All this said, I’m having trouble with fat absorption. I have realized that my body has a tough time with rendered fat as it triggers an almost immediate trip to the can. I’ve adjusted by grilling all my meat and organs rather than using the skillet and supplementing raw suet, 2-3 ounces per meal. This has improved the situation but I’m still pretty loose and end up with pieces of what appears to be fully formed undigested suet. It almost reminds me of my days eating mounds of kale.  It seems my body is having a tough time emulsifying/absorbing the fat but I’m not sure what else to do to improve the situation.  I would like to avoid cutting the fat back since otherwise I would have a tough time hitting my calorie goals. I’m also right at or slightly above 1 grams / pound of total body weight of protein so I don’t want to increase that any more. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks for your help! Matt https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3402009/ 2. Covid-19 Cholesterol [18:18] Holly says: Hi Robb - love your work. I saw a recent paper come out of China that indicated that a majority of those hospitalized with Covid-19 had low serum blood cholesterol. Can you comment on what you think the significance of this is and why higher cholesterol might be protective?   Thanks for any and all info. Holly 3. Starch for Mucous Membranes? [21:54] Kat says: It would be awesome if Robb could address the issue of Paul Jaminet of the Perfect Health Diet saying that some people need to have some starch to not have their mucous membranes dry out. More details on that theory here: https://perfecthealthdiet.com/2011/10/jimmy-moore%E2%80%99s-seminar-on-%E2%80%9Csafe-starches%E2%80%9D-my-reply/ 4. Life Long Vegetarian [30:03] Colleen says: Hi Robb, I’ve just completed the audio version of Wired to Eat.  I was a captive audience and grateful for the of terrific information.  My mom has Alzheimer’s  and although I’ve been extremely healthy, preventing this and other neuro-degenerative diseases is important to me. I just googled Robb Wolf and vegetarian hoping for some guidance.  Instead I found a million reasons why I shouldn’t be vegetarian.  I’m fourth generation vegetarian and eating meat is not an option.  It isn’t about morals or the planet (not that those things are unimportant - your rationales would let me off the hook), but a burger to me would be like a bowl of fisheye balls might be to you (maybe you like those too).  I’m not willing to eat meat.   I would love your advice on how I can aim for your results without the meat, chicken and fish. I will eat eggs (if I load them with veggies and salsa), whey and plant based protein powders and tempeh.  I’m anxious to start your seven day test to see how I respond to beans and lentils. I’m not making judgements for the world, just looking for a way to be my healthiest and still be vegetarian. Many thanks for your time. Warmly, Colleen 5. Alcoholic Kombucha [36:36] Jared says: Hi Robb and Nicki, Have been following you since your days with Crossfit and have always been impressed with your level of experience and your well-reasoned way of condensing your experience into effective generalizations. Back in the olden days you had good advice about alcoholic bevarages with the norcal margarita so you seem a good person to ask this question to. Over the last year or so I've been very-much enjoying alcoholic kombucha (e.g. Boochcraft, boochcraft.com). It's better tasting than regular kombucha, doesn't have the glutens, and doesn't seem to have the sugar of ciders and things like that. It has replaced gluten-free beer for my weekend imbibing. So, is this a health drink I should turn into a daily habit or should I be more worried about daily alcohol intake? Thanks -Jared   Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by our friends at Paleovalley. (0:41) Welcome Welcome back listeners to episode 363 of The Paleo View! Stacy is joining in from Austin, Texas will solid WiFi Also known as rant quality WiFi After taking a peek at the show outline, Stacy is feeling pretty excited about this week's episode Sarah had a great camping trip, but they were rained out the second night What started as scattered thunderstorms quickly evolved into strong storms with a wind advisory and severe weather water This was going to last 12 hours So they decided to have dinner, pack up and head home at 9:00 p.m. After traveling so late, Sarah had to spend an entire day resting up to offset the lack of sleep from the night before The time that they did have to camp was wonderful They hiked up to a mountain, down to a waterfall and they savored their time together in full-on nature mode Stacy is grateful that she has never had to experience a major storm while camping Matt, Stacy and the boys are excited to explore Austin and to eat at some of their favorite spots They went from cool temperatures at their last stop in Santa Fe to warm temperatures in Texas Before Santa Fe, they were able to visit the Petrified Forest and it was an incredible experience Listeners, add this spot to your bucket list of places to visit This week Stacy and Sarah will be talking about fad diets The question that kicked this all off Stacy received from a friend and had to do with phytonutrients in vegetables as being problematic This friend follows a ketogenic diet Phytonutrients in vegetables are one of the 'why' points that people in the ketogenic community mention when defending their dietary choices (14:06) Phytonutrients Sarah finds this 'why' point to be interesting It is looking at things like phytates and oxalates as being somehow problematic when it comes to mineral and nutrient absorption This isn't true, they don't stop you from absorbing nutrients and they don't leach nutrients or minerals from your body You have bacteria in your gut that actually processes oxalates and phytates and liberate the minerals that are bound Having a healthy gut microbiome is key for being able to absorb the minerals that are bound with phytic acid and oxalic acid There are plenty of other nutrients in even the highest phytate and highest oxalate vegetables that will be absorbed without our gut bacteria there to help So you can't say that you have poor gut health, so it is better for you to avoid these high phytate and oxalate vegetables The way that you grow those bacteria that help to break those down is by eating those foods High oxalate foods include organic radishes, turnips, spinach, and arugula We eat these foods raw and organic, and then we will expose our gut to basically nurture the colony There is no science that would point to any kind of risk associated with eating these vegetables This myth has been busted so many times, and yet it keeps coming back There is a lot of confusion around Phyto versus anti Phytonutrients and antinutrients are not the same things There is a huge body of scientific  literature showing us that a high phytonutrient diet is one of the most important aspects of reducing cancer risks and cardiovascular disease risk Most phytonutrients are incredibly potent antioxidants They are anti-aging They are anti-inflammatory They stop DNA from mutating They can protect against depression and dementia The range of phytonutrients and their effects is spectacular We know that there are two things in vegetables that are responsible for all of the benefits that come with a high vegetable consumption diet One is fiber because fiber regulates our digestive system and feeds our gut microbiome And the second is phytonutrients because of the huge range of benefits that phytonutrients have Sure there is a very very tiny percent of phytonutrients that in isolation could have a negative effect However, they are packaged in this package with so very many more positive effects Vegetables are really really really important Stacy is reminded that this is an exercise in being an educated consumer of information Evaluate the sources of your information Know where these sources are getting their information and look into those sources yourself Sarah and Stacy strive when preparing The Paleo View to provide listeners with the base knowledge to evaluate whether or not something makes sense Sarah has been working to educate people on how to evaluate science and how to value science This podcast should be a place where listeners can ask questions when the information they are seeing is too confusing and to give you the base knowledge that you need to see something in all of the scientific research (29:53) Q & A Jackie says, "what do you think of the Paleo Green diet, Keto Green diet, or the Pegan diet? I have heard Dr. Hyman and Dr. Perlmutter talk about them as it relates to keeping the microbiome healthy by getting tons of low-carb veggies & prebiotic fiber in the diet. This is a few different variations of recognizing limitations within keto Stacy and Sarah have talked about the problems with a keto diet in two previous podcast episodes (hereand here) There were two papers published in 2019 on the ketogenic diet that showed very undesirable shifts in the gut microbiome Sarah has written blog posts on this research, which you can find using the links below: https://www.thepaleomom.com/how-ketogenic-diet-wreaks-havoc-on-your-gut/ https://www.thepaleomom.com/adverse-reactions-to-ketogenic-diets-caution-advised/ https://www.thepaleomom.com/the-case-for-more-carbs/ https://www.thepaleomom.com/how-many-carbs-should-you-eat/ https://www.thepaleomom.com/importance-of-vegetables/ https://www.thepaleomom.com/the-amazing-world-of-plant-phytochemicals/ Sarah has been talking about this for five or six years now, that her deep concern about keto is that it simply doesn't provide enough fiber It's so low carb that it is extremely difficult to get sufficient fiber to support a healthy gut microbiome It is also low fiber diversity Yes, there is a therapeutic benefit to incorporate a ketogenic diet when treating a neurological and neurodegenerative disease People in these situations are taking on a keto diet under medical supervision When we discuss people using a keto diet to support weight loss, this is a different conversation What is happening now that this research is out showing that keto has all these problems: 1) Some people are dismissing every paper that shows that keto might not be great 2) Other people are looking at the information and trying to figure out how to get the benefits of keto while mitigating the detriments Dr. Anna Cabeca is one of the leaders of the Green Keto movement This dietary approach basically combines keto with the alkaline diet The alkaline diet is rich in veggies, low meat, which has also been well busted in the scientific literature The idea is that by eating a lot of vegetables that it is healthy for the kidneys because  the kidneys control the Ph of the body and the phytonutrients in vegetables provide the raw materials for the kidneys to effectively do their job However, there is no scientific evidence supporting the low-meat part of this diet High meat consumption is not strenuous on the kidneys Dr. Cabeca has combined that philosophy of consuming tons of vegetables (especially green vegetables to keep the carbs low) and has basically created a more plant-focused version of keto She recommends using supplements to maintain ketosis on this plan The thought process in this is overall good because you are getting a larger diversity of vegetables and you are getting a lot of fiber However, there are still other concerns that Sarah has about why this dietary approach is not ideal There are things that keto triggers in a low insulin environment We do need to make some insulin because it is important for thyroid health, muscle and bone health, hormone health, and memory There are a lot of things that this super hormone does in the body Low carb diets have this fundamental flaw of not providing us with nutrient sufficiency and missing out on some nutrients that our body really needs It's an interesting thought to try to get the best of keto, but the best of keto is not great There have been a couple of studies that have shown that when you lose weight on a ketogenic diet that you lose more muscle per pound of fat than you do when you are just counting calories It is a fad diet that doesn't live up to its promises Even though Green Keto is a really good thought, it's still not enough Stacy feels that any lifestyle or diet that requires the purchasing of anything to add to your diet means you are missing something If you are being told you need supplements or you need this thing to test your ketones, it means that it's not complete in an of itself It also means that it is not sustainable longterm Both Stacy and Sarah choose to take supplements because they aren't getting all that they need of certain nutrients (like vitamin D) from diet alone But Stacy and Sarah are not here to tell people that they need to take certain supplements because it is missing from the lifestyle they advocate Stacy pointed out the way in which fad diets tend to get hung up in labels She loves the way Sarah describes the way she eats as a low-inflammatory, high nutrient-dense diet It is super important for people to understand This description is a nuance that doesn't sell well as a fad diet book However, it does really help health as it relates to a longterm lifestyle for people to figure out individually what works for them (44:20) The Pegan Diet Jackie also asked about the Pegan Diet which is the terminology spearheaded by Dr. Hyman Dr. Hyman saw limitations in both a vegan and Paleo approach He wanted to take the best of both and combined them into a Pegan approach It's plant-based Paleo, but not in the way that Stacy and Sarah talk about it Sarah wants to preface this part of the conversation about what Pegan is by talking a little bit about what her upcoming book, The Gut Microbiome is all about It is not available for preorder just yet, but she is working really hard on it This will not be a Paleo book She is going through the gut microbiome research and writing about what the research says There is no branded diet in it whatsoever She is building the principles of a healthy diet from the ground up based on our microbiome health When you build this diet from the ground up it looks like a very veggie-rich Paleo diet with that Mediterranean, olive oil type, healthy fat focus Moderate fat Moderate protein High vegetable consumption, including fruit and root vegetables So it is moderate carbohydrate There is room for non-Paleo foods that actually may be very beneficial for us This includes lentils, chickpeas, split peas, gluten-free oats, rice, and A2 dairy This book has no diet dogma behind it and simply reflects the research Dr. Hyman's recommendations include: No sugar Nothing that has pesticides, hormones or GMOs Nothing that is refined or manufactured High vegetable consumption Not too much fruit Healthy fats Limiting or avoiding dairy (goat or sheep instead of cow) Always organic and grass-fed 4 to 6 oz. serving of meat per meal He has a strong focus on food quality Recommends avoiding all gluten Gluten-free whole grains sparingly Lentils are the best Only eat starchy beans every once in a while Functional medicine is also another point that he highly recommends Sarah thinks that this is the best of the trademarked version of a plant-based diet combined with Paleo This might potentially still be a little carb phobic However, it does increase Phyto content consumption Overall Sarah thinks that there is a lot of confusion within the Paleo community, which is why she wrote the Paleo Approach As new research emerges, there are no prominent figures within the community who shares on these findings This means that there are people within the community who are not highly informed individuals who are making recommendations that are not based on scientific evidence There are still people who are following a very high meat consumption version of Paleo There is still a high level of people who follow Paleo as a meme instead of a way of life Stacy and Sarah's approach is to try to correct the record about what Paleo is so that people coming into the community understand the importance of vegetables, eating snout to tail, nutrient density, seafood, toxin concerns, etc. They are trying to create an evidence-led robust scientific foundation for Paleo to stand on So that people coming into the community are not adopting a fad version of Paleo where they are just eating a ton of meat and bacon and dark chocolate Where people instead are eating a low-inflammatory, nutrient-density diet Dr. Hyman has looked at those communication challenges within the Paleo community and has decided to rebrand and create a new thing with a new name that can fall under his umbrella It's a different solution to the challenges that Paleo has right now as it grows and absorbs different alternative health communities and the different priorities that different health communities bring to the Paleo community The Pegan approach is interesting to Sarah because it's basically giving up Paleo has become this unmanageable giant thing, and its a ship now that is getting really hard to steer Let's just create a new thing and rebrand In general, Sarah thinks that Pegan is standard Paleo with room for self-experimentation This generally seems like a thing about branding Sarah just isn't sure what she thinks about that She sees the Paleo community as this really amazing group of people who are really invested in their health and she doesn't want to just jump ship on that to simply have a different framework to say the exact same thing She would rather stay rooted and embedded in this community and help to continue to provide that scientific foundation for her choices and call out where influences from other alternative health communities come into Paleo are misled or nuanced Sarah wants to make sure that this community is really well informed and understands why one food is great, why one food isn't, and all the world of gray in between where foods can have pros and cons and might work for you and might not To be able to approach Paleo in not just a balanced way, or a science-led way, but in a non-dogmatic, non-rule based way Stacy says that it makes so much sense to live in a non-dogmatic way, but use principles This is consistent with what Stacy and Sarah have been talking about on the show for years If you look at the way the Paleo community has gone with Chris Kresser's Paleo Code, Rob Wolff's Wired to Eat, and The Perfect Health Diet, you can find countless resources that show the ways in which the Paleo template has evolved as science has evolved Stacy thinks that it is a lot more difficult for people to wrap their mind around the idea of these are guiding rules about food But they are guiding, and they are not hard and fast You will have to figure out what works for you For Stacy personally, she thinks about food and asks is this nourishing me? Or is it not? And there is the additional factor of, is this detrimental to my health? Stacy and Sarah both shared how they personalize based on the years of experimentation they have done Stacy is baffled that we are still trying to put labels and rules around what everyone can or can't eat She feels like we are all individual people who come from different genetic backgrounds And because of these differences, we tolerate different foods differently It's as simple as getting back to basics Eating real food that supports health The more that we really have this mantra with ourselves, "is it helping me get healthier?" And if it's not, is it harming my health? Am I using it in a way that develops social or emotional development for myself It's not just a vacuum (1:08:37) Closing Thoughts Sarah has to share one really exciting thing before they wrap up with is week's show Next week is The Paleo View's seven-year anniversary! Stacy feels that seven years is a very long time And yet it is interesting, that here they are revisiting the principles that brought them here, to begin with It changed both Stacy's and Sarah's lives in terms of their energy, their health, their weight loss, and so much more The science is still pointing to the guiding principles that got us there, to begin with Sarah finds it amazing that even after recording for seven years, they are not running out of topics to discuss Which is a testament to how important it is to approach diet and lifestyle as an education rather than a sound bite Sarah is so grateful for not just this platform, but The Paleo View listeners Stacy shared on the level of deep connection that she feels towards this community of listeners Stacy would love to meet listeners at her final events Be sure to check out the details here Thank you so much listeners for being here for seven years For showing up at events or each week to download and be with Stacy and Sarah They adore you and hope to share something clever to celebrate the monumental milestone Thank you again so much listeners - Stacy and Sarah will be back again next week!

There, I said it- bread can actually be good for you! I can scarcely believe that I actually said that, but there it is. Properly prepared bread, meaning a true, made from sour dough starter, can be a worthwhile addition to your paleo diet, but it needs to be a true sour dough bread. This means a bread that is risen without commercial yeast, and without any other addititives such as sugar, oils, ‘bread conditioners’, and the like! One theory is that the use of conventional, GMO grains (that are heavily sprayed with glyphosate), along with the sugars, vegetable oils, and many dough additives and preservatives are why modern breads are so very unhealthy.Do, you need to seek out (or else bake your own) loaf; one that has only non-GMO grain (I think rye is the best, both flavor-wise and health-wise), is naturally leavened with wild yeasts, and is free of all other additives other than water and the milled grain itself. Anything else and it is not really sour dough, and is something that will only hurt your health, not enhance it!If you an find such a loaf, get it! (It will not be cheap, nor should it be, since such bread is labor intensive and time consuming to make properly- it is a labor of love)! The vast majority of ‘sour dough’ breads in the grocery store are not really sour dough at all, just being flavored to seem to be sour dough, without actually being real at all- avoid these! Just as most pickles and sauer kraut are not really actually fermented and healthy at all, the same is true of most so-called sour dough breads. They are loaded up with vinegar, which while adding a certain sour tang, kills any beneficial organisms that might be in the product. OK. In my little town, an authentic French sour dough bakery opened a week ago. Very impressive products, totally true to the sour dough tradition- they even make pastries and a quiche made with the tangy dough- all are wonderful indeed! It is called the French-tastic bakery, and is not to be missed if in southwest Wisconsin.Just as we all avoided beans in all forms in early paleo, so too did we avoid all grains, if we were paying attention. Even potatoes were not to be eaten! This was all good advice in the beginning, say 10 years ago, and we all had wonderful health benefits from eliminating all grains, beans, and nightshades. But, that was before we knew all about the great importance of the microbiome, or the health of the gut. And it now appears that, by including a small amount of carbohydrates within our diets (keto be damned!), that our gut microbiome benefits, and so thereby do we. I believe it is Paul Jaminet who says in his excellent Perfect Health Diet that ideally we all need approximately 1/3 of our diet to be carbohydrates. But, he does specify that it needs to be safe starches, includiing white and sweet potatoes, and even small amounts of properly prepared beans and grains!!This adds diversity to our gut microbiome, with many beneficial species helping us out as they live within us. And, I am here to tell you- an addition of properly prepared sour dough bread does not distress my digestion at all, and only seems to make me healthier. The fermentation in sour dough neutralizes the phytic acid, and the glycemic response of blood sugar also seems to be vastly reduced, along with the resulting insulin spike. And the minerals in the grains are also rendered usable by the body, unlike in standard breads where the nutrients are unassimilable after being consumed. So, enjoy adding bread back into your life- and wonderful bread! The best you’ve ever had, guarantee

#25 Nutrition Myths to Stop Believing Now, Bonus Fitness & Weight-loss MythsShort Summary This episode is all about myth busting. Nutrition myths are everywhere. Mainly due to the fact that nutrition is a beyond complicated and fairly new science. What happens in a lab does not always translate into real-world recommendations. For example, mice were less depressed after they were fed probiotics. That doesn't mean probiotics are suddenly promising treatments for anxiety and depression. There may be a million other factors when it comes to humans. What else are you eating with that probiotic? What other habits do you have that affect depression? It's seriously so complicated. On top on that, science is constantly changing. We used to think low fat was what we wanted when purchasing things like yogurt or dressing. Now, we drink bulletproof coffee, we favor eggs and bacon over oatmeal and berries for breakfast and we dip our veggies in guacamole. It's a complete 180. It's overwhelming. We know! That's why we are here to bust these nutrition myths for you. Are you ready to myth bust? Of course you are. Let's do this! Ep. 201, Schools of Paleo Thought In this episode, Stacy and Sarah discuss all the competing, yet similar versions of paleo that fall into the larger paleo tent. What do they have in common, and what separates them?   If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 201: Schools of Paleo ThoughtIntro (0:00) News and Views (1:18)Happy Longest Day of the Year! Sarah and Stacy talk about their kids on the swim team. Go kids! Swimming daily has helped our kids build their confidence in the water Stacy and Sarah both are taking the summer off from big projects to play with the kids. Our Topic: The Schools of Paleo Thought (10:58)There is no central organization of Paleo, so there's room to develop different ideas from different thought leaders. We thought it would be interesting to go over the different ideas All paleo leaders agree: we're trying to eat the diet that makes us feel the best. People are individual: Stacy eats some heavy cream, but no popcorn, for example, but Sarah is the exact opposite! The similarities between philosophies are greater than the differences. Standard PaleoRobb Wolf and Loren Cordain: Grain-Free, Legume-Free, Dairy-Free, Refined sugar-free, Refined oil-free Chris Kresser and Sarah add: find the most nutrient dense foods to add to your diet Loren Cordain is also very low carb and low fat as well. His anti-green bean and anti-potato stances and anti-salt are not generally accepted The Cordain stance on lean meats is due to the idea that most meat isn't grass fed or game meats, thus not what humans are designed to eat, but he's simplified to lean meats to try to be more understood. Check out Episode 88 on balancing Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats for informations of fat types PrimalMark Sisson created Primal It includes dairy and also includes a lot of lifestyle factors, including the 80/20 rule. 80/20 rule has been widely adopted, including in the second edition of The Paleo Diet Mark came into the paleo seen from the side when paleo and primal followers realized they had a lot in common. Early paleo focused on the whys of paleo, but Mark was one of the pioneers who talked about building a sustainable lifestyle. People who think paleo, think challenge. Then people enter paleo with a strict challenge mind set Whole 9 Life/Whole 30Their approach is a very strict approach inside of the challenge, but outside of the challenge are much looser. For example, the Hartwigs will eat gluten. People tend to think the Whole 30 rules should apply all the time when they approach paleo from the Whole 30 Lots of different subgroups and controversies have stepped upLow Carb vs. Safe Starch Low Fat vs. High Fat Lacto-Paleo/Primal Perfect Health Diet (Primal + Rice #TeamWhiteRice) Weston A. Price (Grass fed Dairy plus Soaked, Sprouted, Cooked Grains and Legumes)You can ferment wheat to the point that it tests as gluten-free, though a celiac probably shouldn't touch it. But even the gluten-free labeling threshold (20 parts per million) can cause reactions in people with severe sensitivity Auto-immune Paleo (like Sarah) The Allergy peopleOften they need very specialized recipes. Sometimes you'll go to a site with a different philosophy and find recipes that don't align with your ideas.Russ Crandall, the Domestic Man, is a very talented cook, but he's Perfect Health Diet. His recipes include Dairy and Rice, often times. People are constantly telling him that he's "wrong" or "not paleo" Different paleo ideas don't make you wrong, they just make you different! Russ had open heart surgery and a stroke and his own diet gave him back his health! There are as many ways to implement paleo as their are people who do it! Figure out what the optimal version of this nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory, whole food-based diet is for you! And remember: We're all on the same team! Paul Jaminet, Ph.D was an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, became a software entrepreneur during the Internet boom, and now provides strategic advice to entrepreneurial companies while pursuing research in economics. Paul’s experience overcoming a chronic illness has been key to his views of aging and disease. Paul and I started by discussing the birth of their new baby Luke, and since I have a 15-month old daughter, I got sleep envy. I regularly use LED lighting to entrain circadian rhythm but I realise I could be doing more of the same for our daughter Ivy. Paul then announced that he's working on a cookbook. Next we talked about the Perfect Health Retreat, which frankly sounds awesome. The retreat caters for every aspect of diet and lifestyle including diet, rest, exercise and stress reduction. It's a learning experience woven into a beach holiday. I was interested in Paul's experience dealing with chronic infections because I too had the same problem. Now I see it everyday in our practice. My advice was if the diet and lifestyle described in the Perfect Health Diet are not working for you, find someone that can help you figure out the reasons why. Paul recommends getting most nutrients from food, but also has a recommended supplement list. Finally, we talked about my experience switching over to a low carb version of the Paleo diet. Paul's problems got much worse when he went low carb, whereas my performance improved markedly. It's important to point out that I went through the transition after fixing my chronic health complaints. Paul thinks that the healthier you are, the more likely you are to withstand a carbohydrate deficiency. I'm still not convinced that such a thing exists! Bryan McCrystal Im guessing you dont count calories. does this translate to race day?. was your fuel all carb?? was there any fat in your fuel? Peter Bandettini Did you hit a "wall" at any point? I noticed you slowed to 9+ minute pace at about 17 mi. Mike Davis What "under the radar" supplements did you take and what changes to that protocol will/would you adjust? Warren JT Did you cycle in carbs? And was it a window of time or just one meal a week ? Aimee Decaigny Was there any part of your nutrition/training that you feel better served you in Whistler vs Kona, and vice versa? Mike Russell At what level of "base" fitness should we begin minimal training? Or is it appropriate to go couch half/full marathon on minimal? Andrew Jones Some more info about extreme isometrics. I got a lot of chronic injuires/tightness going on... is it a good idea to do something like a 5 minute squat for this? Kurt Man Anthony How much Brick training did you do and how far? And was your brick training just bike/Run. Great job and thanks for all the help you give! Kevin Gossett What changes did you make to pre-race and in-race nutrition from Ironman Canada to Ironman Kona? What changes would you make now, if any, now that you have completed Ironman Kona? Jim Herman Do you think that ole school long training such as the hours put in by Dave Scott and Mark Allen would have put you at the top of your age group or even above, given your obvious physical abilities? Can you tell us your thoughts on it and is it something you'd take for every workout or just race day. Heidi Ray What are the top ten beginner mistakes during a triathlon? Should I try doing run only races, like half/full marathons, or open water swims, etc before training for all three at once? Brandon Lawrence On thermogenesis... Since you went from a sauna to a cooler area I would Assume that a bigger temp difference had better effects, say a hot/cold shower vs. a warm/cold shower. Am I correct? Also, what is your reason for using cold adaption as you don't seem to have much fat to lose. Eduardo R. Lorenzana Congrats on Kona!! Will you be putting out a soup to nuts outline of your plan? Week by week, nutrition, exercises, etc? Christopher Allen Congrats on Kona!!! With a change to a high-fat diet, did you have before and after blood work completed to see if there were and positive or negative affects? I ask because I was on statins before and am afraid to go high-fat and have my cholesterol and triglyceride number go up. Kyle Parzich Do you think you could have seen noticeable improvement by adding just 1-2 extra longer sessions a week on top of the minimalist training you did? Also since you raced a late season IM to qualify, do you think you would have performed better at Kona if you qualified at, say IM Texas? Damien Teney Among all of the unconventional training techniques you used, which one do you think had the most (positive) impact on your performance ? Hard to know without repeating the experience many times, but I'm sure you can make some guesses! Kevin Gossett Any ideas or resources for maximizing swim training in an Endless Pool? I don't have the same feeling that I have in a lap pool. Paul Carroll I take it your 8-9 hrs training didn't include weight training? Kevin Gossett How far out from Ironman did you start the sauna/cold thermogenesis? Did you add the sauna because of Kona's hot conditions? I know you're a component of cold thermogenesis but not sure if you regularly include a sauna protocol. I'm assuming most of your training was interval/intensity based. Darcie Gurley What did you eat/drink the day of the race? How did you feel? And are you going to be going ketogenic for your next one? Thomas Howell Your minimalist training methods and hack combos helped you with your under 10hr finish. What do you think you could have changed as far as training and recovery/supps to place higher? Do you feel you would have placed higher with a larger training volume? Ahmad Fahmy What are some of the negatives of a ketogenic diet? Eric LafontaineWhat is the long term effect of such approach? Testimonial from Rayne @ 00:26:10I had a break through and wanted to say thank you! After listening to your pod cast I was inspired to get my act together. I've been transitioning to a lower carb eating style with increased fats and moderate protein. It's been going well - lost some weight and body fat %. I'm a relatively large guy, 6'2", 230 lbs, with approx 15%bf. But the true trial came this weekend when I ran the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim. it's 48 miles and 11000 feet of climbing. I've been running ultras for a number of years and have always used "hammer nutrition" products and consumed around 2-300 calories per hour. For this run I tried something I had never used before (Cardinal sin, I know) I used Ucan super starch, Vespa and a couple of Nut butter packets. I Felt Amazing the entire way. I began to feel sleepy in the final miles so I busted out some sport jelly beans that I had held in reserve and the glucose and caffeine woke me up and I flew out of the Canyon with a total run time of just over 13 hours. For the entire day I consumed just under 200 grams of carbs and approx 88 calories per hour! I never thought that it was possible. Thanks again for your insight and inspiration. Natural UTI Remedies Craig says @ 00:29:53He has a friend who is in her mid-70s who struggles with Urinary Tract Infections. She has tried all the stuff the docs suggested but they still come back. Do you have any ideas? He just went through a blood test and everything looks ok (except for elevated ALT, Liver Enzymes). Is there something specific he should be looking for or at? Is there a cleanse or detox he should use to minimize or heal the damage he has done to himself. In my reply, I mention the following: - - (use 10% discount code BEN) - - - Can you drink BulletProof Coffee every day? Allie says @ 00:52:12 Do you think it is a good idea to use everyday or should you take a few days off per week and save it for "big days"? Six Ways To Deal With Anxiety Michael says @ 00:58:34What would you recommend for someone with a General Anxiety Disorder and resulting chronic/adrenal fatigue. He is looking for a more natural approach to treating his disorder. He's been on meds and has weened himself off. Then he tried some natural remedies like valarian, st. john's wort, and 5-htp. They've been working pretty well but he is still feeling fatigued. He is looking for supplements, lifestyle advice, or other remedies. Proven Ways To Fix Muscle Cramps Christopher says @ 01:13:13He recently lost a lot of weight, started eating paleo and started racing Ironman. Since then he has been getting a lot of cramps in calves, hamstrings and thighs. Not necessarily while training or racing but when he is asleep. Testimonial from Chris @ 00:18:28In a period of 6 months every major aspect of my life - professional, personal and mental - hit complete failure. In a dark place, in incredibly bad health, recovering from a second lower spine surgery, scrambling after my startup company closed shop, spiraling from an incredibly bad (like Manti T'eo meets Catfish bad) relationship breakup, following a two week whiskey bender in Vegas, my older brother (Michael) answered my social network plea to help me hit the life reset button. Together we trained for and finished our first 70.3 triathlon in only 90 days. In the process I'm now in the best shape of my life and have achieved a new level of mental clarity and drive. My 70.3 race goals (in decreasing order) were to 1) finish the half-ironman 2) finish under 6:00:00 maximum 3) finish under 5:45:00 stretch 4) do not walk during the run leg 5) leave with a desire to continue training in endurance multi sports and 6) beat my brother -he beat me in both of our tune-up olympic distance triathlons. She doesn't want to give that to him but she does want to get some protein in with the meds. This seems to violate the rule of allowing for adequate recovery time and "over training", yet it seems like it's working for them judging by the results. So what gives? Paul Jaminet, PhD, talks with me about the foundations of his Paleo-based Perfect Health Diet. He and his wife, a cancer reseacher, spent seven years developing and researching the tenets of this diet.  Transcript Click here to view the full transcript for #14 The Perfect Health Diet with Dr. Paul Jaminet. Both have successfully healed their own “middle-age” and chronic health problems with this diet and have learned a great deal about the benefits – and pitfalls – of the Paleo diet that they would like to share. Learn more about it on Perfecthealthdiet.com. Their Beliefs Disease, premature aging, and impaired health have four primary causes: malnutrition, food toxicity, evolutionarily discordant lifestyles, and chronic infections by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. These causes go together. People who eat toxic, nutrient-poor diets are more likely to contract chronic infections and do not easily recover from them. Yet the body has amazing powers of recovery. On a healthy diet, the immune system can tackle and defeat most infections, especially with the aid of antimicrobial drugs. A diet like the Perfect Health Diet should be the first treatment option in most diseases and an adjunct to therapy in all. Paul and Shou-Ching Recommendations About 3 pounds [1.4 kg] of plant foods per day, including: About 1 pound [0.45 kg] of safe starches, such as white rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and taro; About 1 pound [0.45 kg] of sugary in-ground vegetables (such as beets or carrots), fruits, and berries; Low-calorie vegetables to taste, including fermented vegetables and green leafy vegetables. One-half to one pound [0.25 to 0.5 kg] per day of meat or fish, which should include organ meats, and should be drawn primarily from: ruminants (beef, lamb, goat); birds (especially duck and wild or naturally raised birds); Shellfish and freshwater and marine fish. Low omega-6 fats and oils from animal or tropical plant sources, to taste. Good sources include: butter, sour cream, beef tallow, duck fat; coconut milk or oil palm oil, palm kernel oil, olive oil, avocado oil, macadamia nut butter, almond butter, cashew butter Acids to taste, especially citric acid (lemon juice, lime juice, orange juice, grapefruit juice), lactic acid from fermented or pickled vegetables, vinegars, tannic acids from wine, and tomatoes. Broths or stocks made from animal bones and joints. Snacks or desserts from our pleasure foods: fruits and berries, nuts, alcohol, chocolate, cream, and fructose-free sweeteners like dextrose or rice syrup. By weight, the diet works out to about 3/4 plant foods, 1/4 animal foods. By calories, it works out to about 600 carb calories, primarily from starches; around 300 protein calories; and fats supply a majority (50-60%) of daily calories. In the shadow of the apple are foods forbidden because of their high toxin content. Notably: Do not eat cereal grains — wheat, barley, oats, corn — or foods made from them — bread, pasta, breakfast cereals, oatmeal. The exception is white rice, which we count among our “safe starches.” Rice noodles, rice crackers, and the like are fine, as are gluten-free foods made from a mix of rice flour, potato starch, and tapioca starch. Do not eat calorie-rich legumes. Peas and green beans are fine. Soy and peanuts should be absolutely excluded. Beans might be acceptable with suitable preparation, but we recommend avoiding them. Do not eat foods with added sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. Do not drink anything that contains sugar: healthy drinks are water, tea, and coffee. Polyunsaturated fats should be a small fraction of the diet (~4% of total calories). To achieve this, do not eat seed oils such as soybean oil, corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, or the like. We highly recommend certain foods for their micronutrients. These include liver, kidney, egg yolks, seaweeds, shellfish, Are toxic metals causing your fatigue and health issues? Find out by taking Wendy’s Heavy Metals Quiz at

Paul Jaminet, Ph.D., was an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Paul’s experience overcoming a chronic illness led the Jaminets to develop the views of aging and disease presented in Perfect Health Diet. Suffering from chronic illness and unable to get satisfactory results from doctors, husband and wife scientists Paul and Shou-Ching Jaminet took an intensely personal interest in health and nutrition. They embarked on five years of rigorous research. What they found changed their lives— and the lives of thousands of their readers. In Perfect Health Diet, the Jaminets explain in layman’s terms how anyone can regain health and lose weight by optimizing nutrition, detoxifying the diet, and supporting healthy immune function. They show how toxic, nutrient-poor diets sabotage health, and how on a healthy diet, diseases often spontaneously resolve. Perfect Health Diet tells you exactly how to optimize health and make weight loss effortless with a clear, balanced, and scientifically proven plan to change the way you eat—and feel—forever!

Today's show is with the brilliant Paul Jaminet, author of The Perfect Health Diet and perfecthealthdiet.com. After having Paul on the show a few months ago, I was happy to touch upon some of the cheekier topics this time around, including the health benefits of drinking, why eating white rice won't kill you, and, of course, fecal transplants. Now, if I had to recommend one book on optimizing your health, The Perfect Health Diet is it. In fact, my nutritional strategy (The Wild Diet) is actually closer to the Perfect Health Diet than it is to Paleo/Primal. This is required reading, folks. Paul's content is tirelessly researched and his nutritional approach is balanced, reasonable, and easy to implement into your life. We cover: How the same diet can cause weight loss AND weight gain The ins and outs of a fecal transplant How most Americans are eating industrial waste products as a staple of their diet Why sipping wine with your steak is good for you

The "Perfect Health Diet" book  claims to have the four steps to renewed health, youthful vitality and long life. But what is the Perfect Health Diet? In this interview, I talk to author Paul Jaminet, and ask him the following questions about the relatively high fat and unique diet contained in the "Perfect Health Diet" book. In your book, you list several reasons you believe a 20-65-15 carb-fat-protein ratio to be ideal…what are those reasons? Isn't glucose the body's primary fuel? What about people who are exercising like an Ironman athlete? Can they really eat that much fat, and have you seen this done? Why do athletes think that eating more protein helps them to add muscle? In your book, you list what you consider to be the four most dangerous foods. What are they, and why are they dangerous? In your book, you say that you eat "conventional supermarket meats". Does that mean you don't eat organic, grass fed meat, and if not, why? In your book, you list vegetables as a fat source. Can you explain how that works? You say that coconut oil leads to a naturally slim waist. How? Why do you recommend people supplement with high dose iodine? Why do you encourage long ketogenic fasts? ...And much more! ----------------------------------------------------- Special Announcements: -New! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)   --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Craig has a call in question about swimming, cycling and running all in one day during triathlon training. Mario asks: I like to listen to music and podcasts, is there a set of headphones you would recommend for use both indoors in the gym and outdoors. I especially hate when they snag and rip out of ears, what do you use? In my response to Mario, I recommend Yurbuds. Alan asks: I eat low carb (not much processed foods/sugars) but my father is having kidney issues (doctor can not explain it but kidney function is down to like 50%) and is being told he can not eat much in the way of protien (like 30 grams/day) or potassium. he is also being told to eat everything i have learned is bad and will lead to weight gain and insulin issues such as white bread. he is also on blood pressure medications, etc. this is certainly beyond me and the doctors/nutritionists are advising and do not seem concerned about what seems to be an extremely unhealthy diet. do you have any thoughts on what he could do or where to look for better advice? Sam asks: I just read this article.  What do you make of it.  Are Tour de France cyclists exceptions to the rules, or how does this assessment compare to yours?  These cyclists are surely putting their bodies through considerably more stress than any AGer.  On the other hand, their nutrition and rest/work cycles may be more controlled than an AGer.  Did the time period have anything to do with it (Gatorade was not invented yet!)? http://www.wired.com/playbook/2011/06/myth-too-much-exercise/ Craig asks: Jeff Galloway's philosophy of Run-Walk-Run has helped me in runs. Could this apply to Triathlon (at least the bike and run legs)? In my response to Craig, I recommend he watch the Bobby Mcghee video interview series at EndurancePlanet.com. Andree asks: Beer gut. Is there really such a thing? Anonymous asks: My whole life I have had lumps, or nodes of tissue under my nipples. I am a 32 year old male and have never had any issues with this and am in great health, however, what are these and is there a way to make them go away? In my response, I refer to Get-Fit Guy's man-boobs episode. Chuck asks: I've heard that taking coconut oil can "increase your metabolism up to 48%" over 14 hours (not sure exactly on the time). Is this true? Also, what I'm more interested in, is that I've heard it can increase energy? Is this true, and if so, how much coconut oil should I take to accomplish this? Would it be a good idea to incorporate some before a workout? Tony asks: Having been newly diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and having experimented with a gluten free regime positively, I'm now struggling with blood sugar highs and lows, I'm concerned that the relatively high gi foods I'm now eating such as rice and potatoes are causing these issues. Any tips on minimizing these probs would be gratefully received. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
