At this point, Shy One might be familiar to most music fans as one of the hosts of NTS's daily breakfast show, Soup To Nuts, where she helps listeners across the UK and Europe settle into their morning routines with an eclectic and soulful selection of dance music and downtempo. But the London artist has been around a lot longer than that, with a discography that goes back well over a decade. She started releasing music as a regular on Scratcha DVA's label, and it was there that she sketched out a recognizable but impressively varied approach rooted in her home base of London. On her records, Shy One sometimes feels like London incarnate, synthesizing the histories of Black British dance music—drum & bass, grime, UK funky, broken beat, jazz, you name it—into one syncretic and immensely appealing sound. But her music glows with the warmth of American deep house, too, which lends it a timeless, ageless quality that has proven immensely appealing. She furthers this mission with Private World, a party she started with Ruby Savage. The name kind of says it all: she's inviting you to her own personal space, but what awaits is a whole wide world of music and culture. Her RA Podcast feels like a hybrid between a club DJ set and her morning show, and here, she zeroes in on a the lineage of American house music from the '90s and beyond, featuring tracks from the likes of Green Velvet, Marcellus Pittman, Roy Davis Jr., Wbeeza, Jay Daniel and more, plus a spotlight from Baltimore club king DJ Technics. It's patient and easygoing but perfect for a small dance floor (or a livingroom party), focused but stylistically diverse. It's everything we've come to expect from an artist like Shy One, who weaves stories and histories with her DJ sets, and does it effortlessly, too. @shyonebeats Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/911
@toumbaa sits on the crest of a wave of experimental artists in his hometown of Amman in Jordan. He mixes up a passion for UK rave and various sounds on the hardcore continuum with the traditional rhythmic forms of his homeland. After previous outings on All Centre and Hypnic Jerks, a superb debut EP on Hessle Audio last month has made him one of the most talked about producers in the game right now. His staggered broken beats, hefty sub bass and knack for a catchy rhythm are exceptional in design and execution. As a DJ he is no less meticulous: this week he works through some 35 tracks in 90 minutes, many of which are his own singular creations. They sit amongst work from the likes of Scratcha DVA, Migos, DJ Paypal and The Maghreban in a mix that is brilliantly loose and lithe to start with before tightening the screw and locking you into an all-body workout. In effortlessly joining the dots between the music he grew up with and the UK music he has grown to love, Toumba offers up all-new sound worlds.
This Friday, we take you from Joy Orbison's UK Funky-ish remix of Jorja Smith's Rose Rouge to Lady Lykez and Scratcha DVA's athletically buzzing Killa Bee; from Doss and Rye Rye's Baltimore club house to Daniela Lalita's witchy Tenía Razon; and from Rihanna's Abba-esque Lift Me Up to Heather's classically shoegazing on Revere It. We celebrate new albums from Phoenix, Tom Skinner and Mount Kimbie and rejoice in local sounds from Desert. Our UKG Friday banger is an MJ Cole remix of Delilah.
eviewing their 2021 EP on Livity Sound, RA's Henry Ivry said that the duo—along with collaborator DJ Polo—represented a "micro-history of jungle, garage, dubstep and, of course, their bread-and-butter, UK funky." Now, you might not be familiar with them, but these two London producers, LR Groove and Razzler Man, have been doing their thing in the UK capital for nearly two decades, both together and apart. They reunited in 2018, inspired by the changing and cyclical tastes of UK dance music fans and, perhaps most importantly, the international rise of South African dance music and its interplay with other genres around the world. The duo have now released two records for Livity Sound, which is among the biggest badges of honour you can get in this sector of electronic music. Effortlessly combining UK funky, dubstep and snatches of gqom and amapiano, the duo's music feels organically adventurous, but hardly trendy—in fact, the space and reverb of their beats still sounds a lot like the music they were associated back in the '00s, in the best way. Their RA Podcast is a journey into the musical borderlines they operate, made up mostly of their group tracks and solo, along with cuts from like-minded artists such as Scratcha DVA, KG and Karizma. It's a whole lot of UK and a little bit South Africa, the sound of Black British dance music in flux and perpetual evolution. Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/844

I stumbled across this Resident Advisor article from Feb 21 today - https://ra.co/news/74673 - the premise being 'We compiled a playlist of 100 weird and wonderful interludes from electronic albums'. It stuck in my mind all day so i had to do a mix! I chose about 30 of the tracks from their playlists and added a few of my favourites. ps. a little cheeky to use RA's playlist image for my mix, so let me know if that's a problem! Includes short interlude tracks from Biosphere, Regis, Fred P, Sarah Davachi, Om Unit, DJ Shadow, 36, Chris & Cosey, Global Communication, Men with Secrets, Boards of Canada, Scratcha DVA, Claudia Anderson, Fennesz, Upsammy, Pangaea, Darling Farah, Lotic, Moderat, Addison Groove, Cabaret Voltaire, Borusiade, Joy Orbison, Flava D, Black Jazz Consortium, Jump Source, Avalon Emerson, Murcof, Leon Vynehall, Breakage, Christina Vantzou

Mali Larrington-Nelson AKA Shy One lives and breathes the eclecticism and diversity of her DJ sets and productions. Having started off DJing on pirate radio at 13 years old, Shy One has been exposed to and influenced by the full spectrum of sounds her hometown of London has birthed and nurtured over the years. As with many teenage Londoners at the time, grime and the wider family of indigenous London club music was what gave Shy One the passion to pursue music as more than a pastime. Obsessively collecting white labels by some of her local production heroes quickly developed into obsessively making beats in Fruity Loops for a plethora of different crews and MCs bubbling up in Harrow, the North West London borough she grew up in. Undeterred by those in the scene who called her beats “weird” or “different”, Shy One ploughed on carving out her own sound which eventually caught the ear of Scratcha DVA, who went on to release the Decaffeinated Love EP and her debut LP, Bedknobs and Boomkicks, on his now renowned DVA Music imprint. Since her initial releases with Scratcha, Shy One has continued to grow as an artist and diversify further into a somewhat undefinable sound that's origins are undoubtedly London but take in a huge variety of musical cultures, from hip-hop and jazz to house music and West London's own brokenbeat movement – all of which are well represented on her various radio shows across stations like Balamii, NTS and Rinse FM. As well as DJing and releasing music more recently on labels like Diskotopia and Through My Speakers, Shy One is also a resident DJ and part of London's BBZ and Touching Bass collectives – two forward thinking groups of artists, DJs, and activists that strive to create a space for London's marginalised LGBTQI+ and POC communities respectively through art, music and culture. https://earth-agency.com/artists/shy-one/ @shyonebeats

From Berlin, Germany we're pleased to welcome the lovely Sarah Farina to The Armory. Press play. Get down. Over the last couple of years, Sarah Farina has become one of Berlin's main taste-makers in underground bass. Sarah is well recognized throughout Germany and noticed by artists and music heads on each and every continent. Her sets are driven forward through futuristic break-beats and intense bass lines. Not sticking to any specific genre, she defines the music she plays as ‘Rainbowbass'. Sarah Farina is one of the original founders of Through My Speakers, which became a record label in 2014, after being a collective and event production crew since 2010. Over the last years she supported some of the most respected of her bass music contemporaries, both locally and abroad. She contributed to Rinse.fm's Hyperdub show with Kode9 and Scratcha DVA in London 2013 and shared the DJ booth with artists like Loefah, Disclosure, Gaslampkiller, Lunice and many many more. Being connected with crews like Teklife (RIP DJ Rashad), Buraka Som Sistema, Exit Records and similar, her network is large and constantly growing. Her two contributions to Boiler Room Berlin in 2013 and 2014 were well received by BR's usually discriminating audience and paved her way even more for promising gigs in the future.
