Edward Berger's new CONCLAVE is a low-key, intimate political thriller full of unexpected reveals, but fundamentally about power, purity, belief, compromise, perception, and committee decisions. This week we share our thoughts on CONCLAVE's insular focus and messaging around religion and politics before considering how its power brokers and kingmakers compare to those found in the 1964 presidential-candidate drama THE BEST MAN, and the two films' overlapping ideas about whether politics demands hypocrisy. And for Your Next Picture Show, we offer a recommendation for THE DEATH OF STALIN, a radically different movie about the vacuum left when a powerful man dies, and the jockeying and chicanery that follows. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE BEST MAN, CONCLAVE, and anything else in the world of film by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Santa-Wakanda forever! Demnach also über DER TALENTIERTE MR. RIPLEY, den koreanischen Geheimtipp THE TIGER - LEGENDE EINER JAGD, den ewigen Geheimtipp I SEE YOU, VIVA MARIA! oder IN SEARCH OF DARKNESS 2 und über ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, Sergie Leones TODESMELODIE, MANODROME, NO HARD FEELINGS wie auch noch THE DEATH OF STALIN. Hollywood rarely makes films about the Soviet Union, at least from their perspective (even if it's a bit ahistorical). The Death of Stalin came out 100 years to the month of the Russian Revolution, which was no accident. Despite the flaws of this film, which we discuss in full, it's a really fun "fan fiction" (as per Jolly Leftist). I had fun watching and hearing those more knowledgable about the period that I am discuss all the facts. It'll come as no surprise that our Hannah is a huge Armando Iannucci fan. And The Death of Stalin, his 2017 satire on the brutality and absurdity of tyranny and what happens in the aftermath of, in this case, the death of Soviet monster Joseph Stalin, is a firm favourite. Brimming with trademark Iannucci smarts, wit and creative insults, boasting a dream cast of big names, and darker than the inside of a cow, fellow Iannucci fans Mick and Yosra were bound to love it too. Well, you'd have thought.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Also, discussion of mass murder, antisemitism, alcoholism, execution, mass killings, death, grief. We move out of the fog of war to a much weirder and funnier moment of history this week as we dive into the power vacuum of Soviet power in 1953. More importantly, though, we're watching an Armando Iannucci film, which means razor-sharp satire and incredibly inventive cursing, both of which are present here. But while the movie is executed impeccably, it misses the absurd scale of Soviet terror and power under their most feared and, at times, respected leader. To be sure, the performances here are incredibly funny and on the mark. But Iannucci wanted to pull punches in the name of realism and perhaps should have just leaned in a bit more. Writer and director Armando Iannucci reveals the most important artistic influences and experiences that have shaped his own work. Armando was the creative force behind Radio 4's news satire series On The Hour, which moved to television as The Day Today and launched the career of Alan Partridge. He wrote and directed the political comedy series The Thick Of It, and the long-running American TV series Veep. His big screen credits include In The Loop, The Death Of Stalin and The Personal History Of David Copperfield. Armando recalls his Italian-Scottish family upbringing in Glasgow, where his lifelong love of classical music was first forged in Hillhead Public Library. A fan of radio comedy from a young age, he talks about the impact of hearing the 1978 radio comedy The Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, whose central character Arthur Dent is, like many of Iannucci's own comic creations, a man way out of his depth as events spin out of control. The 2003 invasion of Iraq is chosen by Armando as an event that had a big influence on his decision to create political satires The Thick Of It and its big screen spin-off In The Loop, in which government ministers and their advisors struggle to navigate a political path littered with inconvenient facts and rules. Reflecting on his work as a director, Armando Iannucci cites the American filmmaker Sidney Lumet as another major inspiration, with movies including Network, Dog Day Afternoon, Twelve Angry Men and The Verdict. Producer: Edwina Pitman

This week we discuss the hilarious historical black comedy The Death Of Stalin (2017) from writer director Armando Iannucci and starring Steve Buscemi, Michael Palin, Paul Whitehouse, Jason Isaacs, Jeffrey Tambor and Simon Russell Beale (among others). After evil dictator Joseph Stalin (Adrain McLoughlin) dies, he leaves behind a power vacuum that his closest allies are quick to fill. This absolute comedy gem highlights the race to the top between the vile sadist Beriya (Beale) and the seemingly hapless Khrushchev (Buscemi) with the skulduggery and backstabbing that only the creator of the Thick of It can do justice!
