Two big names from two remarkable stories in Test cricket are on the programme.New Zealand's men created history by securing their first ever Test series victory in India - ending India's run of eighteen consecutive Test series wins at home over a dominant period of twelve years. Rachin Ravindra, Player of the Match from the opening Test of the series, tells Alison there is nothing like a Test win for your country, how he was inspired by the ‘golden generation' of New Zealand cricket - and his hopes of meeting Sachin Tendulkar.Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood tells Stumped how they arrested a slump in fortune to earn an incredible come-from-behind win over England - their first series win at home in nearly four years. Masood talks about the team finding “balance in the middle of chaos”, the precarious nature of captaincy, and the future of dropped batting star Babar Azam.Alison, Jim Maxwell and Charu Sharma all reflect on the recent success for both New Zealand and Pakistan.Photo: General view of play during an ICC Men's T20 World Cup match between Pakistan and New Zealand. In this episode of the show, we move to a new studio but it's still cricket on the agenda as we look back at the week that was. England broke plenty of records on a Multan road, Kane Williamson looks set to miss at least the first Test against India, the White Ferns breathed life into their T20 World Cup chances and Team India's depth was on show again against Bangladesh.   We start by discussing England's remarkable win against Pakistan, in a game which looked headed for a dull draw on a very flat pitch until first a Joe Root and Harry Brook partnership then a flurry of Pakistan wickets late on Day 4 swung the Test England's way. We talk about whether the match was enjoyable as a cricket fan, marvel at Joe Root's brilliance and wonder how both sides will back up after so spending so long in the field.   We then turn our attention to India, where the Black Caps are about to embark on a three-Test tour as heavy underdogs, without Kane Williamson – at least for the first match. How should the NZ batters attempt to combat this formidable Indian bowling attack? Will Matt Henry replace Tim Southee? And can the Kiwis put up a fight or will India win the series with ease?   In some positive New Zealand news, the White Ferns put together an almost complete performance to beat India in their opening game of the T20 World Cup, giving them a great opportunity to advance through to the semi finals. But then Australia came along and burst the bubble of joy, looking every bit the champions in wait as they skittled NZ for 88. We talk about the controversy involving Amelia Kerr, and praise Rosemary Mair for her strong performances so far. To round out the show, we discuss the batting firepower of India's next generation T20 side as they lead Bangladesh 2-0, and Baldy opens the black book again with a Sheffield Shield update. We'll be back again next week with more news and reviews from around the world. T20 World Cup Semi-Final Betting Tips - New Zealand v Pakistan

Bet Central Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2022 13:15

Host Carl Lewis is joined by Lwanele Poswayo as they provide betting tips for the first semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup (T20WC) will see Group 1 winners New Zealand take on Group 2 runners-up Pakistan in Sydney on Wednesday evening. The Blackcaps beat Ireland by 34 runs in their final Super 12 stage game on Friday and, although they finished level on points with England and Australia, they had a superior Net Run Rate (NRR).   Meanwhile, Pakistan defeated Bangladesh in a pseudo quarter-final to take advantage of South Africa's shock defeat to the Netherlands earlier in the day. It'll be a fascinating contest between the fastest scorers of this edition (8.89rpo for New Zealand) against the second-most economical bowling attack (6.55rpo for Pakistan).   Kane Williamson's side have been conquered only once in this tournament - a 20 run loss to England in Brisbane - and have won by margins of 89 runs and 65 runs (against Australia and Sri Lanka) in their two games at the SCG. Furthermore, they have a very strong record at this stage of recent ICC tournaments, reaching the final of the 2021 T20WC following the final of the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups. The only blot on their copybook came in the 2016 T20WC when they lost to England in the semi-final.   With the ball, New Zealand have shared the wickets around, with all five main bowlers making significant contributions. Tim Southee, Mitchell Santner, Trent Boult, Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner have all claimed at least six wickets at averages in the teens or better. Southee has been particularly impressive at the SCG: from his 6.1 overs he has produced one maiden, conceded only 18 runs and taken four wickets.   Pakistan lost their opening two matches of this T20WC to India and Zimbabwe but have since beaten the Netherlands, South Africa and Bangladesh. The win over the previously undefeated South Africa was at the SCG by 33 runs (DLS) and that victory injected plenty of confidence into the side after the shock defeat to Zimbabwe. Pakistan reached the final of the first two T20WCs, winning in 2009, but have lost their last three semi-finals with the most recent failure at this hurdle coming against Australia last year.   Batting has been an issue for Pakistan in this competition with their openers, Mohammed Rizwan and Babar Azam both not living up to their usual high standards. Rizwan is the second leading run scorer in T20Is this year (924 runs at 46.20) but has struggled for form over the five games and is yet to make a half-century. Shan Masood, who only made his T20I debut in September, is Pakistan's leading run scorer with 134 runs and a top score of 52 not out. Shaheen Shah Afridi came into this tournament not at full fitness but has become more effective with every game and took 4-22 in the win over Bangladesh on Sunday. Spinner Shadab Khan is also in fine form and has taken 10 wickets from his last four matches including 2-16 at the SCG.   This will be the 29th T20I meeting between the teams with Pakistan leading 17-11. They also have the edge over recent contests with a 4-1 advantage from their last five matches. They beat New Zealand during the 2021 T20WC group stage and won three of their four clashes during the Tri-Nation Series in New Zealand last month. At the SCG, England beat Sri Lanka on Saturday when chasing and ended a run of eight successive T20I games at the venue which were won by the team batting first. Meanwhile, none of the matches in Sydney have failed to produce a result and there is no rain forecast to interrupt proceedings during the hours of this game.   Players to watch: Only South Africa's Anrich Nortje and Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga have taken more T20WC wickets than Trent Boult over the last two years. His 19 wickets during this time have cost 15.15 runs per dismissal, with his best performance coming at the SCG on October 29th when he took 4-13. Fellow left-arm quick Shaheen Shah Afridi exploded onto the 2021 T20WC with figures of 3-31 against India and 1-21 against New Zealand in his opening two games but, this year, his best performances have come over recent matches. He has taken eight wickets from his last three games including 3-14 against a powerful South Africa batting line-up at the SCG. Stat attack: Since January 2021, New Zealand have won 83% of T20Is that they have begun as favourites, whilst Pakistan have won 53% of T20Is that they have begun as outsiders. Both centuries in the 2022 T20WC have been scored at the SCG, as have three of the top four team totals. The last seven T20Is between New Zealand and Pakistan have been won by the team batting second. New Zealand have bowled out Australia (111) and Sri Lanka (102) in both of their matches in this tournament at the SCG. Babar Azam averages 44.87 against New Zealand from 10 innings in T20Is. Glenn Phillips is New Zealand's leading run-scorer at this T20WC and has the second-best scoring rate (9.83rpo) of all players to strike at least 150 runs. Haris Rauf has dismissed Devon Conway in four of the five T20Is in which they faced off for at least one ball (4/29 from 27 balls).

Host Carl Lewis and cricket punter Lwanele Poswayo preview the big group 2 ICC T20 World Cup match between South Africa and Pakistan in Sydney.   South Africa's batting line-up is unlikely to change as long as they're winning, which probably means that there's still no room for Reeza Hendricks. The only consideration for them is whether to bring back Tabraiz Shamsi in place of one of the quicks, which could leave Lungi Ngidi on the sidelines.   South Africa: : (possible) 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Temba Bavuma (capt), 3 Rilee Rossouw, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 David Miller, 6 Tristan Stubbs, 7 Wayne Parnell, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Anrich Nortje 10 Lungi Ngidi/Tabraiz Shamsi, 11 Kagiso Rabada.   Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of the match with a knee injury so Pakistan's line-up will have atleast one change. Asif Ali was dropped after the India match but may be brought back in to the XI unless Fakhar is ruled out of the tournament entirely, in which case Mohammad Haris could be brought in as a player replacement.   Pakistan: 1 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 2 Babar Azam (capt), 3 Shan Masood, 4 Asif Ali, 5 Iftikhar Ahmed, 6 Shadab Khan, 7 Mohammed Nawaz, 8 Mohammed Wasim, 9 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 10 Haris Rauf, 11 Naseem Shah. Pitch and conditions This match will be played on the same pitch as the Sri Lanka-New Zealand game, where Trent Boult took a career-best 4 for 13. There's expected to be something in it for the quicks but also plenty of opportunities to score big. Sydney is the only venue at the tournament where teams have breached 200. The best news is that there's no chance of rain at all, with the temperatures in the mid-teens. Stats and trivia Pakistan have a 3-0 win record against South Africa at the T20 World Cup, even though they last met in 2012. The average first innings score in Sydney at this tournament so far is 188, the highest of the venues used.

Wow. What an honour.  The 2022 County Cricket summer has been graced by some of the finest names in the game, and Sam and Annie were very lucky to spend time in the company of Shan Masoood. What a lovely young chap he is: he talks his formative years in England, training under 'Foxy' Fowler at Durham, perspective on the game, his love for Derbyshire, the tragic passing of his sister and much, much more. Not one you will want to miss.

For one final time (well at least for the last time in a few weeks), the gang are together for their usual County Championship review.  And this week Annie, Dan and Sam are joined by a man whom, if rumours are to be believed, is in line to play Richard Branson in a new biopic. But then again, they are just rumours, and we have Mr Mark Church on the show because he is one of the great orators of cricket.  Despite Mark's protestations, the honour is all ours. No CC game is left untouched, no stone is left unturned. Unless we don't like the look of it, or it is too heavy. Same drill folks: listen, enjoy, hate, comment, share, get in touch and keep supporting county cricket. Look out for our Shan Masood special dropping next week too!

Shan Masood was written off by some - myself included - as someone not quite good enough, who perhaps got his chance because of his family connections as anything else. He disappeared back into Pakistan domestic cricket after 12 Tests, and if you never saw him again he'd barely be thought of. But instead Masood spent years rebuilding his career with the help of experts - and me - to rebuilding his game. And from the limited results we've seen so far, it was time well spent.
