The Hikone branch of the Otsu District Public Prosecutors Office announced on the 10th that it has decided not to indict a 70-year-old male care worker from Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture. The man had been arrested on suspicion of preparation for murder and violation of the Firearms and Swords Control Act after allegedly hiding a kitchen knife at the welfare facility for people with disabilities in Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture, where he worked, with the intent to kill a 44-year-old resident. The prosecutors did not disclose the reason for their decision. Fresh fruits and vegetables that are not thermally processed are likely to carry a higher microbial load than cooked foods. Many of those microbes are not concerning to human health. However, when pathogens of human health concern are present, the food can become unsafe to eat. Scientists use many methods from pre-harvest through post-harvest to keep food free of human pathogens. Water antimicrobials, such as chlorine, and photodynamic inactivation using photosensitizers, such as curcumin, are 2 preventative measures that Matthews and colleagues are investigating. Curcumin is a natural chemical compound found in the turmeric plant. It is responsible for giving tumeric its yellow color. Curcumin is also a photosensitizer, meaning that it can absorb light energy and transfer it to another molecule to initiate chemical reactions that produce cytotoxic singlet oxygen. And so, we might think about organisms, such as Salmonella or the Shiga toxin producing E coli or Listeria. There are a number of processes and initiatives that are put into place, from the pre-harvest through post-harvest levels to try to ensure that the product is not contaminated with microorganisms of human health concern. Each day, we're consuming literally billions of microorganisms in the foods that we eat, and particularly the raw fruits and vegetables that we're eating that are not being thermally processed in any fashion by which you might reduce the microbial load. Oftentimes we think about the bacteria that might well be there. But we do know that there's viruses that could be present. There's certain type of protozoa that might be present. Many of us know of norovirus and the concerns associated with that particular pathogen. So, there's a multitude of microorganisms that might well be associated with fresh fruits and vegetables, but there's really a very limited number or types that are actually of concern from a human health standpoint. In my program, we're working on E. coli O157:H7, in particular. It's a certain serotype of E. coli, a diarrheagenic E. coli, what's also known as a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. We work with Salmonella, and we work with Listeria monocytogenes, but there's other microorganisms, such as Campylobacter, Yersinia, Staphylococcus aureus. All of those types of pathogens can also be associated with foods—and different types of foods, at that—and be of concern to the general public—the consumer. If we look at a lot of the processing of foods that are taking place, not only here in the United States, but globally, many times, what will happen is they're utilizing some type of a water antimicrobial, and I stress that because, oftentimes, these antimicrobials are added to the water to control the microbial load in the water. So, ultimately, you're not basically putting on water and putting on a whole load of microorganisms along with it. And also, you can prevent cross contamination through that. Here in the U.S. and elsewhere, we'll often put additional chlorine into the water. So, let's say we're increasing the chlorine concentration to 20 parts per million, or 50 parts per million, or maybe in poultry processing, they're utilizing peracetic acid. These are 2 common antimicrobials that are being used. What we wanted to do is find out could we utilize some other types of methods that might well control microorganisms on the commodity itself? And that's where we started looking at photodynamic inactivation and coupling that with the use of a photosensitizer. And in this particular case, the photosensitizer we were using was curcumin. The reason for working with curcumin is that it's naturally used in foods as a food dye. It's also used as a flavoring agent, and so forth. So, it's there, and it's being used—not just in the U.S., but [also] globally. And we thought we would try to see if we utilize this compound, could we have an additive effect to it? If you apply certain wavelengths of light, you can inactivate microorganisms, but if you apply that wavelength to something like a photosensitizer type molecule (curcumin), you could generate singlet oxygen molecules. And those singlet oxygen molecules would act like little explosions on the cell membrane and basically blow it apart and, therefore, inactivate the organism. We looked at the ability of this to inactivate Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, as well as E. coli O157:H7, so these Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, and what we did indeed find is that it was very effective. We looked at it in comparison to peracetic acid use in the poultry industry, and we found it to be equivalent, at least to treatments that we were utilizing on poultry skin, with inactivation of the microorganisms, such as Listeria, on the poultry skin. Im Landkreis Vorpommern-Rügen sind, so die Meldungen (1) Ende August, mehrere Kinder an Escherichia coli (Ehec) erkrankt, teilweise ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert worden und kämpfen dort auf der Intensivstation (2) mit den schweren Folgen der Infektion, die bis hin zum Nierenversagen reichen. 17 Menschen (3) seien innerhalb kurzer Zeit erkrankt, darunter 14 Kinder. Die Zahl der gemeldeten Infektionen stieg dann binnen einer Woche auf 45. (4) Die Ehec Bakterien fänden sich im Darm verschiedener Säugetiere und produzierten Giftstoffe, die bei Menschen zu Symptomen wie Durchfall bis hin zu schweren Magen-Darm-Erkrankungen, sowie zu Nierenversagen führen könnten.Ehec ist eine bakterielle Erkrankung, die von bestimmten Stämmen der Colibakterien ausgelöst werden kann. Ursache der Magen-Darmbeschwerden sind Gifte, insbesondere das Shiga-2-Toxin oder auch Verotoxin genannt, das zu wässrigem bis blutigem Durchfall führen kann, sowie das Hämolytisch-Urämische-Syndrom (HUS) mit akutem Nierenversagen, Thrombozyopenie und Hämolyse auszulösen in der Lage ist. Bei einigen der betroffenen Kindern sei dieses Nierenversagen den Berichten zufolge bereits aufgetreten.Was eine regionale Angelegenheit hätte sein können verbreitete sich medial schnell und wurde auch von großen, überregionalen Medien (5) berichtet. Auch in Belgien seien in einem Seniorenheim sogar mehrere Menschen an Ehec gestorben (6). Die Gesundheitsbehörde klärt uns über die Ursache der Infektionen auf: Infiziertes, rohes Fleisch oder Fisch, Rohkost und Rohmilch könnten die Bakterien enthalten. Das RKI sieht zunächst keinen Grund zu der Annahme, dass es sich um einen größeren Ausbruch handele, beobachte die Lage aber genau. Denn ein Ausbruch liegt dem RKI zufolge erst dann vor, wenn die Zahl der aufgetretenen Fälle die Anzahl der normalerweise zu erwartenden Fälle übersteigt. Der Grund der Aufregung hat sich also erledigt, bevor die Aufregung abgeklungen ist. Das hält aber die großen Medien nicht davon ab, das Thema als Aufhänger für die Beschwörung einer großen Gefahr zu nutzen (7). Erinnert wird dabei auch an den medial groß inszenierten Ehec-Ausbruch 2011, bei dem angeblich infizierte Bokshornklee-Samen aus Ägypten Auslöser einer breiten Infektionswelle gewesen seien.Verwiesen wird auch darauf, dass allein in diesem Jahr bereits 3660 Fälle von Ehec gemeldet worden seien. Da wirkt der aktuell vermeldete, medial aber inszenierte nicht-Ausbruch unerheblich. Vor Allem, seit das RKI Anfang September die Erkenntnis mitteilte, dass nur ein Teil der Magen-Darmbeschwerden auf einen bestimmten Ehec-Erreger zurückzuführen sei, und daher die Zahl der damit in Verbindung stehenden Fälle wieder auf 14 nach unten korrigierte. (7a) Die übrigen eingesandten Proben von Patienten wiesen demnach keinen Ehec-Erreger auf. Interessant ist aber, dass die Zahl der jährlichen Ehec-Fälle seit Einführung der PCR-Methode als Diagnoseinstrument sprunghaft angestiegen ist (8). Die PCR-Methode hat viele Mängel und ist als Diagnoseinstrument eigentlich vollkommen unbrauchbar (9). Her interview with The Unfinished Print can be found, here.    Looking For Different Places to Call Home, from the series Family Tree (2004) 18"x14" mokuhanga and letterpress   Ralph Kiggell (1960-2022) -  was one of the most important mokuhanga practitioners. Originally from England, Ralph lived and worked in Thailand. Ralph pushed the boundaries of mokuhanga with extremely large pieces, jigsaw carving, and by using fantastic colour. He also worked with the International Mokuhanga Conference to promote mokuhanga around the world. He will be greatly missed. Ralph's work can be found, here. The artist carves an image into a linoleum block, printing what's left.    Central Saint Martins - is a renowned art and design college in London, formed in 1989 through the merger of St Martin's School of Art and the Central School of Art and Crafts, both known for their innovative, hands-on teaching methods. More information can be found, here.  gomazuri - is a mokuhanga technique where slight pressure is used with pigments too make a “spotty” image, what look like sesame seeds. It can add depth to your prints.  Paul Binnie - Travels with the Master: New York Night T/P 11 3/8" by 8 1/8" Awaji Island - located in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. It is considered the birthplace of Japan in the *Kojiki* (Records of Ancient Matters), as the first island created by the gods Izanagi and Izanami in Japanese mythology. Historically, Awaji was a strategic point for maritime trade and travel, linking the Kansai region with Shikoku and Kyushu. During the Edo period, it was part of Tokushima Domain under the rule of the Hachisuka clan. Today, Awaji is known for its natural beauty, traditional industries like Awaji Ningyo Joruri (puppet theater), and as the site of the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, the world's longest suspension bridge, connecting it to mainland Japan. 弁  - is the Chinese character for ben, "dialect." Kansai (関西地方) - is a region located on the main island of Honshu, Japan, which encompasses the Prefectures of Nara, Kyoto, Wakayama, Osaka, Hyōgo, Shiga and Mie. It has the most UNESCO world heritage sites in Japan. For tourist information about Kansai, see here.  sizing paper - at times mokuhanga printmakers will size their paper. Size is made from water, animal glue (rabbit, horse), and alum. What the size does is keep the pigments the artist uses from “bleeding” into the outer edges of the paper. There are many recipes of size, here is one that artist Walter J. Phillips used. Gotō Hidehiko - is a mokuhanga printmaker and baren maker based in Tōkyō, Japan. You can order baren from him, here.  Terry McKenna -  is a mokuhanga printmaker and teacher residing in Karuizawa, Japan. He received guidance in the art form from Richard Steiner, a prominent mokuhanga printmaker based in Kyoto. It is based on their experiences at Nagasawa Art Park, the precursor of MI Lab.  mica - in mokuhanga, mica (kirazuri) is used to add a shimmering, reflective effect to prints. Mica powder is typically mixed with glue and applied to the surface of the print in areas where a subtle sparkle or luminous texture is desired, often to highlight details such as clothing, water, or the sky. This technique gives the print a luxurious quality and enhances the visual depth.
