10th day of the Islamic month Muharram

Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with host Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with author and public intellectual Micah Goodman. Just ahead of this week's What Matters Now recording, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump sat in the White House for a celebratory meal. The table was set for a grand announcement -- a sealed hostage release-ceasefire deal -- but the guest of honor and his terrorist counterparts have yet to come to terms. Goodman looks back at the two huge "double gambles" made during these 21 months of war. The first was by former Hamas leader Yahye Sinwar, who launched the invasion of Israel on October 7, 2023, after viewing the intense divisiveness in Israeli society. His double-or-nothing bet was that Iran and its proxies would immediately join in the onslaught -- they didn't. Goodman compares Sinwar's double gamble to that of Netanyahu, who launched a surprise preemptive strike on Iran's nuclear program on June 13 and wagered that the United States would join. Now that Netanyahu's bet has paid off, Goodman describes how the region is ripe for a realignment -- if tough compromises can be made to end the Gaza war. And so this week, we ask Micah Goodman, what matters now. What Matters Now podcasts are available for download on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. The aftermath of the Day of Ashura means we have a lot to reflect on, and a lot to work on. We're joined this week by Sheikh Azhar Nasser of the USA, who guides us on understanding the mission of Imam Hussain (as) through a number of lenses. We review why Karbala does not receive global media attention, how to propagate the message of the Imam, and tackling misconceptions of Karbala - like did the Shia kill Imam Hussain, was Karbala a political tug of war, and much more. Not to be missed!

Lawyer from Tanzania specialized in human rights, Ashura Kayupayupa, talks about her mother Rose, who, after her husband was killed in a car accident, was disowned by his family. Ashura tells us about widow abuse and witch-hunt, a problem that's still widespread in Africa. But mama Rose stayed strong, re-built her life and started her small agricultural business. Rose teaches us about hope, endurance, hard work, patience, and focusing on your own life. We also learn not to ponder on why something happened to us, but to make the best out of any situation.

Join the speaker as he draws powerful connections between American history, Islamic faith, and the current condition of the Muslim Ummah—challenging listeners, as the sacred days of Ashura approach, to reexamine the true source and meaning of justice. Ask yourself… are you celebrating truth—or illusion?

Netflix's Asura marks the fourth iteration of the Takezawa sisters' story—last seen on-screen in the 2003 film Like Asura, which was nominated for Best Film in Japan. This year, acclaimed director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters) expands the tale into a seven-episode series set in 1979 Tokyo, where four sisters discover their father's affair and watch their family bonds fray under hidden resentments and shifting alliances. Adapted from Kuniko Mukōda's classic Ashura no Gotoku, Asura blends humor and heartbreak with Kore-eda's signature humanistic touch. Tune in as we discuss the episodes, the critical reception, and our ultimate rating. Welcome to Today's Episode!
We welcome back Professor Michael York to discuss Canaanite Gods. This includes the Israelites, Akkadians, Babylonians, and others. Due to proximity, we venture a bit into Sumeria, Egypt, Vedic India and beyond. We even touch upon Hittites, Minoans and Sea Peoples. But it's mostly Yahweh versus Ba'al with a dash of Inanna and Ashura, and other easy to pronounce names. Along the way we discuss soime recurring themes like evil baby eating Gods to matriarchal godheads versus patriarchal godheads. Somewhere along the line, Margorie Taylor Green came up. Oh my! Anyway, you don't want to miss this regional Gods discussion, which had earlier roots and ramifications that continue today. And I wasn't crazy about AI and translation.
