Let us, as Americans, be humble, kind, considerate, and respectful of one another, and of others. Regardless of conditions or circumstances, we can choose “uncompromising integrity” (tummah). Today is the first day of Muharram,[1] the first month in the Islamic calendar, “a time of mourning and peace,”[1:1] “in which fighting has been forbidden since before the advent of Islam”.[2] However, let us not be naive in believing that Machiavellians in our midst are equally as reverent and wouldn’t sieze the ‘opportunity of crisis’ to use the Kitson counter-gang within the Gladio archipelago to provoke a Strategy of Tension episode. May we choose to maintain our own “uncompromising integrity”, regardless of provocations, conditions, circumstances, or what others choose that may be contrary. What, but good, can come of that…? The environs of the Hajj are an ideal setting for discussions and deliberations on matters of benefit between Ulama, leaders and experts. For sixteen months, the Prophet ﷺ and his companions prayed toward Jerusalem. Then, in the middle of Rajab, everything changed. But what happened when the revelation came down during Asr prayer? And what about those companions praying miles away in Masjid Quba who had no idea the Qibla had just shifted? In this episode of the Seerah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan takes us through one of the most pivotal moments in Islamic history: the day the Muslim Ummah turned toward the Kaaba. Discover the dramatic scene of companions mid-prayer, the single messenger who changed everything, and the Jews of Medina who called the Muslims "dimwitted" for this divine command. But that's not all. Why did the Prophet ﷺ long to face the Kaaba while still honouring Jerusalem? What hidden fiqh rulings emerged from this single event? And how does the fasting of Ashura connect to this momentous occasion? The stage is now set for the greatest battle in Islamic history: a battle where Allah Himself promised forgiveness to its participants. Are you ready to witness what happens next? Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with host Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with author and public intellectual Micah Goodman. Just ahead of this week's What Matters Now recording, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump sat in the White House for a celebratory meal. The table was set for a grand announcement -- a sealed hostage release-ceasefire deal -- but the guest of honor and his terrorist counterparts have yet to come to terms. Goodman looks back at the two huge "double gambles" made during these 21 months of war. The first was by former Hamas leader Yahye Sinwar, who launched the invasion of Israel on October 7, 2023, after viewing the intense divisiveness in Israeli society. His double-or-nothing bet was that Iran and its proxies would immediately join in the onslaught -- they didn't. Goodman compares Sinwar's double gamble to that of Netanyahu, who launched a surprise preemptive strike on Iran's nuclear program on June 13 and wagered that the United States would join. Now that Netanyahu's bet has paid off, Goodman describes how the region is ripe for a realignment -- if tough compromises can be made to end the Gaza war. And so this week, we ask Micah Goodman, what matters now. What Matters Now podcasts are available for download on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. This episode was produced by the Pod-Waves and video edited by Thomas Girsch. The aftermath of the Day of Ashura means we have a lot to reflect on, and a lot to work on. We're joined this week by Sheikh Azhar Nasser of the USA, who guides us on understanding the mission of Imam Hussain (as) through a number of lenses. We review why Karbala does not receive global media attention, how to propagate the message of the Imam, and tackling misconceptions of Karbala - like did the Shia kill Imam Hussain, was Karbala a political tug of war, and much more. Not to be missed!

Netflix's Asura marks the fourth iteration of the Takezawa sisters' story—last seen on-screen in the 2003 film Like Asura, which was nominated for Best Film in Japan. This year, acclaimed director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters) expands the tale into a seven-episode series set in 1979 Tokyo, where four sisters discover their father's affair and watch their family bonds fray under hidden resentments and shifting alliances. Adapted from Kuniko Mukōda's classic Ashura no Gotoku, Asura blends humor and heartbreak with Kore-eda's signature humanistic touch. Tune in as we discuss the episodes, the critical reception, and our ultimate rating. Welcome to Today's Episode!
We welcome back Professor Michael York to discuss Canaanite Gods. This includes the Israelites, Akkadians, Babylonians, and others. Due to proximity, we venture a bit into Sumeria, Egypt, Vedic India and beyond. We even touch upon Hittites, Minoans and Sea Peoples. But it's mostly Yahweh versus Ba'al with a dash of Inanna and Ashura, and other easy to pronounce names. Along the way we discuss soime recurring themes like evil baby eating Gods to matriarchal godheads versus patriarchal godheads. Somewhere along the line, Margorie Taylor Green came up. Oh my! Anyway, you don't want to miss this regional Gods discussion, which had earlier roots and ramifications that continue today. And I wasn't crazy about AI and translation.
