There are 3 pieces of God's armor we are to “put on”. 1. The belt of truth. 2. The breastplate of righteousness. 3. The shoes of peace. In getting dressed for the unseen spiritual battle, the final thing we put on are our shoes. And think about it, you're not ready to leave if you don't have your shoes on. My husband knows I'm not really walking out the door if my shoes aren't on. My shoes are the sign I'm really ready and we're going … until then, I'm not really going anywhere. God has places for you to go. A stand you are to take. Purposes you are to fulfill. Good plans you are to walk in. But, without your shoes, you're not really ready to go with him. The soldier's shoes were a valuable piece of their armor. Remember in these days, they were foot soldiers. They weren't riding around in tanks and helicopters. They were marching in, climbing up, standing ground. In military battles of these days, the army who had the best battle shoes was set apart. There's a story of an army who won countless victories because they put nails in their shoes, creating the first cleats. They could climb what no other army could climb. As women, we know shoes make or break the outfit – but in battle, shoes can make or break the victory. So Paul says in Ephesians 6:15, “For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.” Without your shoes, you're not ready. With the wrong shoes, you're not winning. Barefoot, you're injured. The shoes in the Armor of God are specifically the PEACE that comes from the Good News. Sounds a little fruity doesn't it? That's sweet – but does it really mean anything to you? I'll be honest – that just never meant anything to me at all – until today. Until I really studied what Paul is saying. Now I get it, and I'm so excited to share it with you. Peace – what's your image of God's peace? Someone once asked 2 very famous painters to each paint a picture of God's peace. One painted the image of a beautiful, calm, serene lake in the most peaceful setting you could imagine. It's basically where I am right now – North Italy's Dolomite mountains. The lakes here are the deepest, calmest blue, fully protected by stunning mountains that reach straight up in the sky. Such calm. Such peace. That was one artist's painting. But the other artist paints the ocean. Not calm water, but the ocean in a violent storm. Massive waves crashing in the fierce winds. Lightening flashing in the sky. And in the very bottom corner of the painting was a small bird, totally protected from the storm, standing on a rock with a solitary beam of light shining on it. If there was a soundtrack to the painting it was the bird singing his completely unbothered song of perfect peace in the midst of that raging storm. Both are pictures of peace. One is a picture of peaceful circumstances – the other is a picture of the power of God's peace. God doesn't promise peaceful circumstances, in fact Jesus warns us of the oppoisite – “in this world you will have trouble”. But God does promise us the power of his peace – the unshakable knowing he is with you, he sees you, and he is in control. We're so quick to assume only the good days contain God's peace, but you've never experienced God's peace on the most extreme level until you're in the middle of something that demands you absolutely freak out, but instead you have an unspeakable peace within. With this peace you're not rendered incapable, you're strengthened in the battle. My friend, if you find yourself currently in a battle, God has peace available for you. And his word isn't just offering it to you as an option, his word is telling you, “PUT THIS ON!” But how? How do you put on God's peace? Thank God, his word actually tells us. We're not left to guess and wonder. It's clear. Philippians 4: 6-7. First, there is an offer you have to REFUSE to make room for God's offer of peace. If you don't refuse it, there will simply be no space for peace in you. What is the offer you have to refuse? Worry. Here's precisely what God's word says, “Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. THEN you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” This is a formula and a process. First you refuse worry. Worry is always in the offering. There's always something to worry about, right? But you must turn away from it. Turn it off. Resist it. Evict it. Absolutely take a stand against worry. You know what we often do instead? We make excuses for it. “Oh, it's just who I am. I'm a worrier. I always have been.” That's the equivalent of saying, “Oh, I'm just muddy, it's just who I am. I go out and roll around in the mud so I'm always muddy. I always have been.” ALL WHILE YOU COULD CHOOSE TO TAKE A SHOWER! If you're a worrier, there's something you can do that's the equivalent of a shower for a muddy person – PRAYER. And just as you have to take a shower again and again, you must pray again and again. The only way you refuse worry is to talk to God about it. Push it right over to God and let him have it. Tell him what you need. Thank him for everything he has already done for you. That's your part of the equation. Then, God does his part. His part is filling you with PEACE. Peace that doesn't make sense. Peace like the little white bird sitting in a beam of light during a furious storm on the ocean, just singing his happy song. I don't care how much you worry or how long you've been worrying, peace is available to you. But my sister, you always have to choose it. Now you may think your worrying is harmless, but it's not. Without God's peace, you're facing a battle with no shoes on. Without your shoes you're simply NOT READY!!!!! Now here's where this gets really really really good. This is the part you may not have ever understood before and you're going to have a little light bulb go off. Paul says these shoes of peace come from the Good News. What is the Good News? It's literally the message of Jesus. It's the salvation story of God sending his own son to die for you so that you might be saved. It's the promise of his Holy Spirit dwelling in you offering what you could never manufacture for yourself. It's all this GOOD NEWS, not bad news that applies directly to our lives because of Jesus. Good, good, good news. Shoes of peace from this Good News of Jesus. And here's why this is important in battle – GET READY … Your enemy, the devil, is always going to try and convince you that God is against you, that God doesn't love you, that God is too busy for you, angry at you, distant from you. The devil continually tries to convince you that every little bad thing, and certainly every big bad thing, that happens in your life is proof of God's absence, God's distance, or God's disapproval of you. You've heard it and felt it before. You've questioned why God would allow this to happen to your family and you start feeling like God doesn't care about your family. Like he's too busy for you. Like he doesn't hear your prayers. Like he's always out to take things from you. Like he's just against you. The more you hear it and the more you feel it, the more dark your thoughts become, the more alone you feel, and the more hopeless the future looks. And that's precisely what happens if you don't have your shoes on. Your shoes of peace from the Good News know exactly who Jesus is, what Jesus did, and what he has promised. And just like a pair of cleats can dig in and hold your ground, KNOWING the GOOD News can help you stand firm when every doubt comes to rock you. The devil wants to remind of you all the bad news, but Jesus says, “I've GOT GOOD NEWS!” Feel the peace in that! The shoes of peace tell you even when bad things have happened, “GOD USES ALL THINGS TOGETHER FOR GOOD”. The shoes of peace tell you even when the storm rages that, “YOUR GOD CONTROLS THE WINDS AND THE WAVES.” The shoes of peace tell you when everything falls apart that, “GOD HOLDS IT ALL IN HIS HANDS AND NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH HIM.” The Good News fills us with peace when the battle rages. And in peace, we stand, We don't run. We don't panic. We don't worry. We stand firm. Girl, put your shoes on and dig in! Dig in to God's promises over you and refuse to back down. Refuse to be shaken. Refuse to give in to worry. His promises will fill you with peace so you can stand through the storm and come out the other side. Jesus made us a promise of HIS PEACE. His peace that would hold us steady. His peace that would guide us. His peace that would fill us in ways that don't make sense. But do you know precisely WHEN he promised us this peace? Jesus promised us that peace on the edge of his own horrific storm. On the very night one of his very best friends would betray him – on the night he would be arrested – on the night before he was to bear the sin of the entire world on the cross, on the edge of the greatest storm all creation had ever seen, Jesus promised us his own peace. John 14:27, “I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid.” Jesus had immeasurable peace, and he offers us that same peace. But it's always up to us to PUT IT ON. With peace, you are ready for battle. With peace you can stand on God's promises and not worry. With peace as shoes, you can dig in with cleats and stand your ground regardless of circumstances. With peace as shoes, you can climb any mountain and overcome the obstacles in your way. You have to choose what you're walking in – Peace or worry. Worry will never win the battle. Peace already has. In parts one and two, we learned about out-of-state landlord David Tomblin. He owns over 200 rental properties in Milwaukee and is fighting lawsuits that threaten to cut him off from rental income. We also learned about how his tenants united against him, and the city's case for declaring his business model a public nuisance. Today, we examine how the city has tried similar strategies for dealing with negligent landlords in the past, and we finally speak with the man himself - David Tomblin. This is the third and final part of “How to Evict Your Landlord," a series produced by WUWM's Jimmy Gutierrez and Lake Effect's Sam Woods.

It is a state in marriage where emotional and physical intimacy dissolves, leaving two people who manage a household together but live separate lives. Is it normal? All marriages go through dry seasons, but accepting this disconnection as a permanent status quo is dangerous and often a precursor to divorce. How do we fix it? It requires breaking the silence, practicing vulnerability, and intentionally pursuing your wife again—spiritually and emotionally. Does counseling mean we failed? No. seeking help is a sign of strength. It means you value the marriage enough to fight for it rather than watching it die a slow death. What if I'm the only one trying? You are called to lead. Even if your wife seems checked out, your consistency in prayer and pursuit can change the atmosphere of the home. The Silent Shift You know the drill. You walk in the door after a long day, drop your keys, and maybe mutter a quick "hey" to your wife who is busy in the kitchen. You eat dinner, talk about the kids' schedules, discuss which bill needs to be paid, and then retreat to your separate corners. Maybe you scroll through your phone on the couch while she watches a show in the bedroom. Then, it's lights out. You sleep in the same bed, but you might as well be miles apart. There is no yelling. There is no throwing plates. on the surface, everything looks "fine." But deep down, you know the fire is gone. You aren't lovers anymore; you are logistics managers. You are business partners running "Family, Inc." This is roommate syndrome. It is one of the most insidious threats to modern marriage because it doesn't look like a crisis. It looks like peace. But as we discussed on the podcast, silence isn't always peace; sometimes, it's just the sound of a marriage slowly suffocating. If you feel like you and your wife are just "ships in the night," passing each other in the hallway with a high-five before handling the next task, you are in the danger zone. Defining the Diagnosis: What is Roommate Syndrome? Roommate syndrome is exactly what it sounds like: a relationship dynamic where the romantic, spiritual, and emotional connection has eroded, leaving only a functional partnership. You share a mortgage, a Netflix password, and maybe some DNA in the form of children, but you don't share hearts. In the podcast, we talked about how easy it is to slide into this. Life gets busy. Careers demand 60 hours a week. Kids need to be driven to practice. The "tyranny of the urgent" takes over, and the first thing to get cut from the schedule is the energy required to pursue your spouse. The problem with roommate syndrome is that it feels safe. It's comfortable. It doesn't demand vulnerability. You can stay in your lane, she stays in hers, and you avoid the messy work of intimacy. But God did not design marriage to be a co-op living arrangement. He designed it to be a reflection of Christ and the Church—a union of oneness. When we settle for roommate syndrome, we aren't just missing out on a better marriage; we are missing the very point of the covenant we made. The "Middle of the Movie" Trap We all love the beginning of a romance movie. It's exciting, passionate, and full of pursuit. And we like the end, where the old couple sits on the porch holding hands, having weathered the storms of life. But as Joshua pointed out in the podcast, nobody likes the "middle part of the movie." The middle is where the work happens. The middle is where the bills pile up, the babies are crying at 3:00 AM, and the exhaustion sets in. This is the breeding ground for roommate syndrome. It is in this "boring middle" that we stop trying. We assume that because we said "I do" five or ten years ago, the work is done. But marriage isn't a slow cooker; you can't just set it and forget it. If you stop feeding the fire, it will go out. Many men find themselves in the grip of roommate syndrome simply because they stopped dating their wives once they "sealed the deal." They stopped asking questions. They stopped listening. They replaced curiosity with routine. The Danger of "We're Just Fine" If someone asked you how your marriage is right now, would you say, "We're fine"? "Fine" is the most dangerous four-letter word in a marriage. "Fine" is the waiting room for divorce. When you are suffering from roommate syndrome, "fine" is the lie you tell yourself to avoid rocking the boat. You might think, "Well, we aren't fighting." But the absence of conflict is not the presence of intimacy. Two corpses in a morgue don't fight either, but that doesn't mean they have a relationship. Roommate syndrome thrives on apathy. It convinces you that a lack of arguing is a sign of health, when in reality, it might just mean you've both stopped caring enough to engage. As mentioned in the episode, lack of communication is the primary fuel for roommate syndrome. You stop sharing your fears, your dreams, and your struggles because it takes too much effort, or you fear rejection. So you talk about the weather. You talk about the schedule. You keep it surface level. And slowly, the woman you promised to give your life to becomes a stranger you live with. The Generational Shift: Staying vs. Leaving There is an interesting generational divide when it comes to roommate syndrome. The Older Generation: Often stays together out of duty. They might sleep in separate rooms or live separate lives for 30 years, resigned to the fact that "this is just how it is." They honor the commitment, but they lose the joy. The Younger Generation: Often views roommate syndrome as a valid reason to bail. The mindset is, "I'm not happy, I'm not fulfilled, so I'm out." Neither of these is the biblical model. God doesn't want you to be miserable or divorced. He wants you to be restored. Whether you have been married for 36 years or 6 years, roommate syndrome is not a life sentence. It is a warning light on the dashboard. It's telling you that the engine needs oil. We have to reject the cultural lie that says passion inevitably fades and that becoming roommates is the natural evolution of a long marriage. That is false. Intimacy changes, yes, but it should deepen, not disappear. Vulnerability: The Cure for the Common Roommate So, how do you break free from roommate syndrome? It starts with the one thing men hate most: vulnerability. You have to be the one to break the silence. You have to be the one to say, "Hey, I feel like we are drifting apart, and I miss you." That is terrifying. It opens you up to rejection. She might say, "Well, that's your fault." She might not be ready to hear it. But as the leader of your home, you cannot wait for her to fix the dynamic. Roommate syndrome feeds on pride. It says, "I won't pursue her until she respects me," or "I'm tired of trying." You have to kill that pride. You have to be willing to look foolish in the pursuit of your wife's heart. In the podcast, we discussed the importance of talking through the disconnect. You can't fix what you won't name. If you are just "high-fiving in the hallway," sit her down. Ask her, "Do you feel like we are just roommates?" You might be surprised to find that she has been feeling the exact same loneliness but was too afraid to bring it up. The "Hunting License" on Your Life Here is a concept from the podcast that might sting a bit: Your wife has a "hunting license" on your life. When you got married, you gave her the right to call you out. You gave her the right to speak into your blind spots. Often, roommate syndrome sets in because men revoke that license. We get defensive. We stop listening to her input because it feels like nagging. So, she stops talking. She stops trying to help you grow. She withdraws. And suddenly, you have peace and quiet, but you also have roommate syndrome. To heal, you have to re-issue that license. You need to invite her back into your life as a partner, not just a spectator. Ask her, "Where am I failing you? How can I love you better?" When you give her permission to speak truth into your life again, you bridge the gap that roommate syndrome created. You show her that you value her voice more than your ego. The Spiritual Disconnect We cannot talk about roommate syndrome without talking about your spiritual walk. If you and your wife are spiritually disconnected, you will inevitably be relationally disconnected. The Bible talks about being "unequally yoked." Usually, we apply this to a believer marrying a non-believer. But it can happen in a Christian marriage too. If you are growing in your faith and she is stagnant, or if she is chasing God and you are content with Sunday morning Christianity, you are pulling in different directions. Roommate syndrome is often a symptom of a spiritual drought. When was the last time you prayed with your wife? Not just over a meal, but really prayed? When was the last time you discussed Scripture together? If the answer is "I don't remember," then you have found the root of the problem. Intimacy with God fuels intimacy with your spouse. If you are running on empty spiritually, you have nothing to offer her but your own limited patience and energy. Practical Steps to Evict the Roommate You can't just think your way out of roommate syndrome; you have to act your way out. Here are practical steps to start turning the ship around today: 1. The 10-Minute Check-In Stop the "ships in the night" routine. Dedicate 10 minutes every day—no screens, no kids—to just talk. And you can't talk about logistics. No bills, no schedules. Ask about her heart. Ask about her day. Re-learn the art of conversation. 2. Date Your Wife Again It sounds cliché, but it works. When you were dating, you put in the effort. You shaved, you made plans,
