With the effects of climate change permeating through more layers of society, and natural resources growing scarcer - the concept of natural asset companies, a new investment model that ties environmental preservation to economic growth, is catching on. Such companies monetise natural ecosystems, providing investors an avenue to fund initiatives that protect and restore biodiversity, water resources, and carbon sinks while also generating financial returns. But, how much are shares in nature worth, and can they achieve their financial and ecological goals? On this episode of Eco Money, David Simpson, Senior Professorial Lecturer for Environment, Development & Health and Environmental and Resource Economist at the American University shares his insights. "Civil War" was released last spring to a positive yet somewhat polarizing reception from critics and audiences as its story drew some controversy while the technical crafts were lauded with praise. The film grossed over $126.2 million worldwide, becoming A24's second-highest-grossing film to date, and has been nominated for the American Cinema Editors Awards and won the British Independent Film Craft Awards for Best Sound and Effects. And now, the film's visual effects have been shortlisted by the Academy's visual effects branch for the 97th Academy Awards. Visual Effects Supervisor David Simpson, Visual Effects On Set Supervisor/Compositing Supervisor Chris Zeh, and CG Supervisor Freddy Salazar were all kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now available to rent or own from A24 and is up for your consideration in all eligible categories at this year's Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects. This week, we're having a herstory moment! Professor and Chair of the Africana Studies Department at Wellesley College Dr. Kellie Carter Jackson joins the show this week to talk Black abolitionists and resistance. We get to know civil rights leader Mabel Williams, spouse and partner of Robert F. Williams, and how she and her husband mobilized Black folks to take up arms and defend themselves in the face of extreme racism in the sixties. We start off with a moment for the cover of Professor Carter Jackson's forthcoming book We Refuse. It features Soldier of Love, not Sade's chart topper, but the beautiful and poignant painting by Brooklyn-based artist Taha Clayton.Disclaimer: While we're happy that gun violence has overall decreased in the United States, it continues to be troubling. We're conscious of how intense gun debates can get and want to stress that this conversation explores how communities took up arms in self-defense against lethal racism. We are not advocating for general gun violence.Remoy introduces Mabel and Robert Williams via their infamous black and white Bonnie and Clyde photo.Prof Carter Jackson breaks down the Williams' approach to self-defense. Robert F. Williams slept with a gun under his pillow to be ready to defend himself for the KKK's night rides: violent runs where Klan member went into Black communities, attacked folks and raided homes. Our guest stresses that though someone likeDr. Martin Luther King preached nonviolence and preferred it, he kept an arsenal of weapons in his home to be ready for self-defense against racist assailants. He'd previously been attacked and firebombed and became ready. The Kissing Case in Monroe, NC is a turning point for the Williamses. In 1958, James Thompson and David Simpson are respectively 9 and 7 years of age. They are playing in the neighborhood when one of the white girls kisses each of them on this cheek. This instance erupts into these young Black boys being accused of rape and arrested. They are beaten and isolated from their parents.Carter Jackson lends context for how terrifying this situation was for these young boys in a warzone-like environment and especially at that age.Remoy shares a few clips from an Oprah WInfrey Show interview in which James Thompson and David Simpson, now adults, recount the horrifying experience.Mabel and Robert make plans to defend their community by mobilizing their community into a rifle club including 60 members of all genders. They became NRA members.Mabel even protected her home from police officers coming into their home without a warrant.Carter Jackson stressed the importance of people knowing the law and arming themselves with that knowledge.Swimming pools were the sight of a lot of child drownings.Remoy shares a clip of Mabel recounting how she and Robert advocated for Black children to use pools safely. While Robert still erred on the side of nonviolent resistance, Mabel was adamant that not using guns for defense was akin to suicide. She even let her sons participate in the resistance, which highlights an important point about how violence and protection aren't as strictly masculine as we sometimes think of them as.Carter Jackson emphasizes Black women's role in community protection. The lack of protection they've historically received has made rise to the occasion of being their own protectors and protectors of the community.[Black women] have never been allowed to occupy the space of the damsel in distress. They've always been seen as undeserving of protection.Mabel knew how the presence of guns was enough to deter potential violence. And she was right. Violence severely deescalated.Carter Jackson stresses the importance of Mabel and Robert's partnership because Robert tends to get all the credit for these efforts.Remoy shares a clip of Mabel describing how she didn't necessarily want the credit but just wanted to do the work.Carter Jackson and Samantha have a moment about the importance of highlighting all the people in the resistance and give credit where it's due. Black women have always been soldiers in the resistance and that should be common knowledge.Racism is not the only thing folks were fighting. Violent sexism must also be challenged and that calls for women's leadership.Carter Jackson brings up Rosa Parks's home being a fortress of guns. Fannie Lou Hammer was also ready to use violent force to defend herself.Black woman in general were aware of how powerful guns were even if they didn't shout it from the rooftops. The gun was enough to make their position known. In our Five Questions segment, Professor Kellie Carter Jackson distills women's anger and they can use it as a driving force. Our guest shares how anger is a big driving force for a lot of her work. She stresses the importance of reparations, not just monetarily, but how do we repair the hurt and destabilization Black communities have endured?Carter Jackson breaks down how she arrived at the title of her forthcoming book, We Refuse.Refusal is the why of resistance.bell hooks has a famous quote about Black men and white women being one stage away from the ultimate social power: white men's power.Samantha asks how Black men and masculine people can champion partnership and women's leadership in the resistance. Carter Jackson delivers a textbook-worthy answer. (48:02)We close out with a great note on how to get to liberation. Dr. Carter Jackson stresses how binaries and individualism pigeon-hole us away from collective freedom. She envisions how to move past that. Thanks for listening!
In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the activity on MBA LiveWire; we are starting to see interview invites released for Round 1 for programs like Yale SOM, Berkeley / Haas, and Northwestern / Kellogg. Upcoming this week, we have several Round 1 deadlines including MIT / Sloan, Duke / Fuqua, UCLA / Anderson, CMU / Tepper, USC / Marshall, Washington / Foster, Washington / Olin, Maryland / Smith, SMU / Cox, Minnesota / Carlson, UVA / Darden, Emory / Goizueta and Georgia Tech / Scheller. Oxford / Said has its Stage 2 deadline, too. Graham highlighted the upcoming webinar focused on MBA programs from the West Coast, including Berkeley / Haas, Stanford, UCLA / Anderson, Washington / Foster and UC / Irvine. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/westcoastmba Graham then highlighted two recently published admissions tips focused on letters of support, and different types of MBA admissions interviews. Graham then noted two Real Humans stories, focused on MBA students at Cornell / Johnson and London Business School. We then discussed three recently published class profiles, from Harvard, MIT / Sloan and Dartmouth / Tuck. Like prior profiles for this season, application volumes are up, and the profile of the incoming classes remains strong. This did, however, lead to a discussion regarding median GMAT scores versus GRE scores. Finally, Graham noted a recently published podcast he hosted with David Simpson of London Business School. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate has an outstanding academic profile, with a 3.85 GPA and 750 GMAT score. They have a health care focus, and as part of their school selection, they need to consider their partner's continuing career. This week's second MBA candidate has a 720 GMAT and a 329 GRE, which led to a conversation as to which is better. They have a strong technical focus, which includes their own entrepreneurial experience. The final MBA candidate for this week is a reapplicant for USC / Marshall. They have improved their GRE score, and other elements of their profile should also be improved. We suggest they also apply to UCLA / Anderson. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

David Simpson is an accomplished musician who's been singing since the age of 12, performing alongside music legends like the Staples Singers, Dionne Warwick, and the Drifters. He's a visual artist who uses his drawings and paintings to lift others' spirits and push himself to improve his craft. He's a father, a sibling, and heart transplant recipient. And he's a resident of the Thome Rivertown neighborhood, a unique full-continuum care community in the heart of Detroit that combines affordable assisted living, Green House homes, and PACE day services. David joins the podcast to recount his fascinating life story, his personal journey through a heart transplant, and why he enjoys living in a supportive place like Thome Rivertown. David's story challenges all of us to remember what empowering, dignified services and supports for elders really mean, and why we must continue to fight to make places like Thome Rivertown the rule, not the exception. Recent thinking has resuscitated civility as an important paradigm for engaging with a violence that must be deemed endemic to our lives. But, while it is widely acknowledged that civility works against violence, and that literature generates or accompanies civility and engenders tolerance, civility has also been understood as violence in disguise, and literature, which has only rarely sought to claim the power of violence, has often been accused of inciting it. Engaging Violence: Civility and the Reach of Literature (Stanford UP, 2022) sets out to describe the ways in which these words—violence, literature and civility—and the concepts they evoke are mutually entangled, and the uses to which these entanglements have been put. Simpson's argument follows a broadly historical trajectory through the long modern period from the Renaissance to the present, drawing on the work of historians, political scientists, literary scholars and philosophers. The result is a distinctly new argument about the complex and often mystified entanglements between literature, civility and violence in the anglophone Atlantic sphere. What now are our expectations of civility and literature, separately and together? How do these long-familiar but residually imprecise concepts stand up to the demands of the modern world? Simpson's argument is that, despite and perhaps because of their imperfect conceptualization, both persist as important protocols for the critique of violence. David Simpson is Distinguished Professor and G.B. Needham Chair, emeritus, at the University of California, Davis. His most recent book is States of Terror: History, Theory, Literature (2019). Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Special Guest David Simpson Today is Saint David of Whales feast day. War of the Worlds on Epix The Holy Ghost has warned us about a lot. In the 1950's and 60's Phillip K Dick wrote about what we are seeing now. No one knew about the submarine until 20,000 leagues under the sea was written. From science fiction to science fact. If they can randomly hand out fake money for the loan and then hand out fake money to forgive the loan how can anyone say what is going to happen to the market. ANY market! HEADLINE: Mortgage demand from homebuyers drops to a 28-year low by Diana Olick Mortgage applications to purchase a home dropped 6% last week compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index. Volume was 44% lower than the same week one year ago, and is now sitting at a 28-year low. Mortgage rates have moved 50 basis points higher in just the past month. Last February, rates were in the 4% range. If the Federal Government can't loan money anymore for Student Loans, the local bank has to right? So where does the bank get the money to loan said student? Why don't we get a mortgage holiday or it being forgiven b/c the same Federal Gov gave the bank the money for my mortgage too?!!!!! Why just forgive student loans? Trying to get a loan for his son to buy a truck and asked about the interest rate and the local bank told him the BEST he could do is 12-16% interest. So he told the teller, okay I have about $50,000 in that bank right now, get you a Kroger bag b/c I'm coming to get it in an hour and he did! He grabbed every cent he had w/ that bank. That is how we should ALL be acting that way w/ our local banks. Is this a Federal Reserve thing? Yes all banks are members of the FDIC. Is there some side step out of this Federal Reserve stuff? Can we make our own bank? Stay constant and steady - When you give up the TV for Lent you realize you have 3 hours in the afternoon that you just don't have anything to do! Maggie has read 4 books this Lent already! HEADLINE: Going For Gold by Jacob Imam Because fiat currency is not based in the natural order, it causes the people who use it to suffer. The ability to print money as “needed” may be a boon to business, but in actual fact, most of the money printed is gobbled up by the banks. “The Cantillon Effect” describes the fact that the chief beneficiaries of the expansion of the money supply are the first recipients of the new money (usually the banks): they are able to spend the funds before they have caused prices to increase. Those next receiving the money (other major corporations jumping on the new lines of credit) face a small increase in price levels, and so on. The last recipients of the new money (the poor and the middle-class) face the greatest inflation in prices with the proportionally few dollars that trickle down to them. In short, by printing and distributing money through specific corporate channels, central authorities have not only diminished the value of the common man's savings but have drastically increased the wealth-gap between those associated with the state and those who are not. This was dramatically seen during the COVID-19 crisis when, between March 2020 and April 2021, the base monetary supply in the US increased by 29.9% and US billionaire wealth increased by 61.9%. Likewise, the top five Wall Street banks—JP Morgan Chase & Co, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, and Citigroup—earned an additional $51 billion that year compared with the year previous.
Special Guest David Simpson Host of the True Money Show aired only on the Crusade Channel AUDIO/VIDEO: Ayn Rand in 1959 asked by Mike Wallace - You are moving toward disaster until and unless all those welfare state conceptions have been reversed and rejected. Do you object to the democratic process? Who determines what is hurtful? A sin may be a hurt but it may not be illegal right? Saint Thomas Aquinas will tell you that some sins are not punishable. Some things you just can't regulate. Impotent Government - those things that God expects us to do for the common good to maintain a peaceable society. These pensions are unsustainable. Lowest risk w/ very little return - all pensions purchase this. Are they exclusively buying that type, no. This is all an attempt to keep this game going on. The availability of liquidity - Here are the current stats: As of 2022, 66 million Americans receive social security benefits every month. As of October 2022, the average Social Security benefit is $1,550.48 per month. The annual cost of Social Security is currently $1.2 trillion. There are 46.7 million American retirees who receive Social Security. Passing this back to the states only puts WHO has to pay these pensions, it doesn't address the problem. What are you going to do with all the retired citizens in these states? The states don't have that kind of money to pay these people. 2 ways Congress can get out of this: 1. Complete and total insolvency, Congress declares bankruptcy and that's that. You hit the reset button. 2. Going back to the Gold Standard and ending the Federal Reserve. This gives time to prepare for bringing the Gold Standard back. Eliminating the Federal Reserve cuts the cord. They gave up their right over money in the US by sending emails back and forth to Congress. $2,000/ per ounce of Gold The 3rd way is almost a default position - Declare bankruptcy or continue this process and let it destroy itself. The Congress could literally say we messed up in 1913, it was a huge mistake but we are going to take back control of it and start to sort it out. Bankruptcy 1995 by Harry E. Figgie, Jr FICA - what if you got back all your FICA money? I believe that is a doable scenario. 75% of that is medicare.
Fifth generation, or 5G technology, promises to bring high-speed, low-latency wireless infrastructure necessary for the smart era. But moving from the promise of 5G to a reality where 5G networks will deliver amazing and important new capabilities and services will require those networks to be secure. To talk about 5G cybersecurity challenges, Lawfare senior editor Stephanie Pell sat down with Tom Wheeler, visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution and former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (or FCC), and Admiral (ret.) David Simpson, professor at Virginia Tech and former chief of the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau at the FCC. They just published a new paper entitled, “5G is Smart, Now Let's Make it Secure.” They talked about the 5G cyber paradox, three specific cybersecurity challenges they outline in the paper, and recommendations they make for addressing these cybersecurity challenges going forward.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare.
