Old Hillside Bourbon is a premium spirits brand co-founded by Emmanuel J. Waters, built on the history of Black Wall Street, the forgotten Black jockeys of the Kentucky Derby, and Durham's entrepreneurial tradition. The brand entered into a $40 billion industry where African Americans represent 12% of consumers but less than 1% of ownership. In this episode, Donald Thompson sits down with Emmanuel J. Waters, CEO and co-founder of Old Hillside Bourbon, to unpack how a brand rooted in Black Wall Street, the Kentucky Derby's forgotten Black jockeys, and Durham's rich entrepreneurial history is winning gold medals, breaking distribution records, and building something far bigger than a bottle.Episode Long DescriptionOld Hillside Bourbon was never supposed to work. Bourbon experts told the founders not to launch in North Carolina, one of the hardest control states in the country. African Americans spend nearly $3 billion in alcohol annually and own less than 1% of alcohol companies. Emmanuel had never tasted bourbon before co-founding the company. Then they held their first bottle signing in Durham. The line wrapped around the building. People bought six, seven, eight bottles at a time. They sold 50 cases in a single day, breaking a record in the state they were told would kill their brand. In this episode of High Octane Leadership, Donald Thompson and Emmanuel J. Waters dig into what happens when a brand is built on something more powerful than marketing: a story worth telling. From the history of Black Wall Street in Durham to the forgotten Black jockeys who built the Kentucky Derby, Old Hillside is using bourbon as a medium to recover and celebrate the American stories that have been systematically erased. And along the way, they are winning double gold medals at the largest spirits competition in the world. In Episode 186 of High Octane with Donald Thompson, Waters and Thompson discuss what happens when a brand is built on story rather than marketing spend. The most durable competitive advantage is a story nobody else can tell. Old Hillside Bourbon is the proof.Key Talking Points:History, Heritage, and Homage: How Old Hillside Bourbon built its entire brand strategy around three pillars that no legacy competitor can replicate. The Economics of Black Entrepreneurship: Emmanuel breaks down what that gap costs communities and how to close it.The Durham Moment: How selling 300 bottles in a state they were told would kill their brand became the proof of concept that changed everything. The Gold Medal Standard: Why Old Hillside entered the largest spirits competition in the world, what winning a double gold medal proved, and what it means to compete not as the best Black-owned bourbon but as the best bourbon period. The Invisible Generals Project: How Old Hillside is honoring the first Black father and son duo in American military history with a limited edition bottle that turns history into a collectible.Chapter Markers00:00 - Intro: Emmanuel J. Waters and Old Hillside BourbonAbout the GuestEmmanuel J. Waters is the CEO and co-founder of Old Hillside Bourbon, a premium spirits brand rooted in the history, heritage, and homage of Black American excellence. A military brat who grew up in Japan and Europe before building a successful career in Silicon Valley's tech industry, Emmanuel came to bourbon not as a lifelong enthusiast but as a storyteller who recognized that the spirits industry was missing the most compelling stories in American history. Under his leadership, Old Hillside has won gold and double gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the largest spirits competition in the world, broken distribution records in one of the country's hardest control states, and built a brand that ships to 49 states and is carried in Whole Foods, Total Wine, and BevMo locations across California. Emmanuel is proof that the best brands are not built on marketing budgets. Too often nowadays, people see differences of opinion as a sign that they are enemies so I love to see when people can have a good conversation from either end of the political spectrum. Respectfully, I'm very conservative so we probably disagree on some things too, but just know you have the support of some people on the right. Coaching Youth Hoops

https://teachhoops.com/ If you are unfamiliar with the Grinnell System, it is the most radical, statistically absurd style of basketball ever invented. Pioneered by Coach David Arseneault at Grinnell College, the math is simple: attempt 100 shots, take 50 three-pointers, force 32 turnovers, rebound at least one-third of your own misses, and substitute five players at a time every 45 to 60 seconds like a hockey line change. When coaches see the headlines about a Grinnell player scoring 138 points in a single game, their eyes light up—especially at the youth level. They think, "If I run this, every kid gets to play, we'll shoot a ton of 3s, and we will out-fun everyone in our league." But running the Grinnell System with fifth graders carries a massive developmental warning label. If you aren't careful, you can accidentally build a culture of chaotic, low-IQ "chuckers" who don't know how to guard their own yard. This episode breaks down how to extract the gold from the Grinnell System for youth players while discarding the habits that destroy long-term basketball development. The Grinnell System is entirely driven by analytics. It seeks to maximize possessions and leverage the 1.5× value of the three-pointer to skyrocket the team's overall Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%). At the college level, where players have refined shooting mechanics, this math can work. At the youth level, however, the math breaks down due to three distinct physical limitations: The Range Tax: Most kids under 14 have to heave the ball from behind the arc. Forcing early, rapid-fire 3s lowers your youth team's actual eFG% into a deep abyss. The Rebounding Leak: Grinnell relies on sending 3 to 4 players violently to the offensive glass on every shot. Youth players often stand and watch long rebounds turn into uncontested layups for the opponent. The Fatigue Factor: The system requires massive depth. If you don't have 10 to 15 kids who can sprint at a Level 4 capacity without a drop-off, the style will exhaust your own roster before it breaks the opponent. To successfully run this high-octane style without ruining your players' foundational habits, you must install specific Constraints that promote Decision IQ: The "Paint Touch" Rule: Grinnell says shoot within 7 seconds. Your youth version should say: "We sprint the floor, but the ball must touch the paint via pass or drive before anyone pulls the trigger." This collapses the youth defense and turns low-percentage heaves into high-percentage looks. The 3-on-3 Press Transition: Instead of teaching a chaotic, trapping defense where kids just chase the ball like bees, use full-court presses to teach containment and pursuit angles. Force the opponent's ball-handler into a "Dead Corner" before applying the trap. The "Equal Opportunity" Line Change: The hockey-style substitution pattern is actually the greatest cultural tool in the system. By swapping five players at a time, you eliminate the parent drama over minutes, keep your Activity Density at an all-time high, and reward every "Energy Giver" on the roster with guaranteed floor time. Coach's Note: "The Grinnell System is a blast if you control the chaos. If you just let the kids show up and chuck the ball as fast as they can without holding them accountable to a standard of footwork and spacing, you aren't coaching a system—you're just hosting a recess. Keep the pace elite, but make the execution disciplined." Title Ideas: Should You Run the Grinnell Basketball System at the Youth Level? The Modified Grinnell System: High Pace for Youth Basketball How to Run a Fast Break Offense for Kids Without Losing Control Primary Keywords: Youth basketball offensive systems, Grinnell basketball system, fast break basketball drills, TeachHoops, Coach Collins, youth basketball coaching philosophy, small-sided games. Secondary Keywords: Basketball eFG% for youth, high-pace basketball coaching, hockey style substitutions basketball, basketball press defense, coaching masterclass, championship habits. Description Snippet: "Is the famous Grinnell System a shortcut to a fun season or a disaster for youth player development? In this video, we break down the analytics of the Grinnell style—100 shots, relentless pressing, and hockey-style line changes. We discuss how to adapt this high-octane offense for youth players by using 'paint-touch' constraints to protect their shooting efficiency and build real decision IQ. Stop boring your players and build a disciplined track meet." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The TWENTY30's co-hosts Hanaa Almoaibed and Lucien Zeigler sit down with Saud Alturki, Saudi music producer, curator, and founder of Brij Entertainment ahead of the release of his third album, High Octane. A project two and a half years in the making, the track list reads like a love letter to hip hop royalty. Busta Rhymes. Swizz Beatz. West Side Boogie. Rhapsody, whom Saud calls his favorite female MC alive today.    Working with his creative director Chindi, who turned every production conversation into something closer to a therapy session, Saud landed on a concept that's deeply rooted in where he's from, the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.   Saud takes us back to the beginning: a freshman at McGill in Montreal, freezing through his first Canadian winter and discovering that music wasn't just something he loved — it was something he could do. A move to LA, a chance encounter at a Verizon store with a gospel-tinged R&B singer named Bernard, and seven years of patience later, he finally put out his first single. That story alone sets the tone for everything that follows: Saud is someone who builds slowly, deliberately, and for keeps.   But the conversation doesn't stop at the album. Saud talks about what it really takes to build a music industry in Saudi Arabia — not just a music scene. Venues, labels, studios, government support, festivals like Middle Beast that have built an entire ecosystem around artists. He's careful to say Saudi isn't quite an industry yet, but the infrastructure is finally arriving, and the talent — including his Brij Entertainment artist Hajaj, the first Saudi to perform at Grammy weekend in LA — is already outpacing it.   There's also a sharp, honest take on the streaming era, why dropping albums in 2025 is "not the best move" (and why he's doing it anyway), the emerging Saudi genre Hoppe — a fusion of Sambri and hip hop that he wishes he'd invented — and what he tells young artists in Riyadh who have every resource he never had at 17.   High Octane drops after Ramadan.

This episode of The Kibbe & Friends Show delivers a full Phase 4 blend of heart, horsepower, and Hazzard County as we celebrate the life of Robert Duvall, recap Dallas Kibbe Racing's latest national event run, and dive headfirst into one of the strongest early Georgia-era Dukes episodes ever made — Season 1, Episode 5: “High Octane.” Before we get to Hazzard, the guys reflect on the passing of Robert Duvall and his unforgettable presence in automotive cinema — especially Days of Thunder. From Daytona 500 reactions to racing rule debates and short track chaos, Rob brings a full Dallas Kibbe Racing update, including brake failures, podium finishes, and real-world racing lessons from a five-day national event. It's real racing talk mixed with the usual KF nonsense. Then it's time for the Dukes Review — and “High Octane” might just be the Georgia-era sleeper hit. Uncle Jesse breaks probation for patriotic reasons (moonshine-as-fuel, naturally), Boss Hogg plots to steal the credit, and we get introduced to Sweet Tilly — Jesse's legendary moonshine-running Ford LTD. Add in one of the hardest early-season General Lee jumps ever filmed (over a semi on Georgia Highway 20), a one-episode revenue agent, and some serious Charger nerd deep-dives from Corndog, and you've got an episode that reminds everyone why the Georgia-filmed shows just hit differently. The guys break down: • The semi-truck jump and which General Lee likely paid the price • Georgia filming locations and production details • The debut of Sweet Tilly • Early Boss & Rosco Laurel-and-Hardy chemistry • Why this episode feels like the true send-off to the Georgia era It's vintage Dukes storytelling with modern car-guy commentary — exactly what Phase 4 was built for. This Oklahoma City icon isn't just a theme park; it's a survivor that outlasted real estate developers, economic crashes, and even an F2 tornado. Send us a textNew Orleans' own Cowboy Mouth—the self-described “southern gospel revival without the religion”—are bringing their high-energy rock ‘n' roll celebration back to St. Louis this Saturday, November 8th, for a one-night-only show at the Old Rock House. The stop marks part of their Cover Yo' Azz album tour and coincides with their 35th anniversary—a milestone for one of America's most enduring and electrifying live bands. Tickets available here. For those who've never witnessed the frenzy firsthand, Cake Magazine captured it best:“On a bad night they will blow the roof off the place. On a good night Cowboy Mouth will save your soul.”Frontman Fred LeBlanc, along with John Thomas Griffith, Brian “Bruiser” Broussard, and Frank Grocholski, have built their reputation not just on loud guitars and big choruses—but on turning every show into a life-affirming party that leaves the audience breathless and grinning. And this weekend's St. Louis stop promises exactly that.A New Album, 11 Years in the MakingEarlier this year, Cowboy Mouth dropped their first album of newly recorded material in over a decade—Cover Yo' Azz, a rowdy and reverent collection of cover songs that honors some of rock's most influential artists. The ten-track record reimagines tunes by R.E.M., The Who, Queen, Frank Sinatra, Cher, The Replacements, Fats Domino, and even Hootie & the Blowfish, featuring a guest appearance by Hootie's Mark Bryan on guitar. The band breathes New Orleans grit and charm into each song, turning classics like “The Real Me” (The Who) and “Can't Hardly Wait” (The Replacements) into punchy, modern rock anthems. The album is available now on Spotify and SoundCloud.Critics have been quick to applaud the band's approach. Mystic Sons praised it as “a joyride dressed in ripped denim,” while York Calling called the album “charismatic, soulful, and expertly performed.” Americana Highways perhaps said it best:“Performed with expertise, finesse, and style... the album summed up is a hoot.”Fred LeBlanc Joins The Tippy Jo ShowAhead of the St. Louis concert, Cowboy Mouth's larger-than-life frontman Fred LeBlanc joined Tippy on The Tippy Jo Show, part of The Barn Media's podcast lineup. The conversation dove deep into the band's legacy, their Louisiana roots, and Fred's signature onstage energy that transforms every Cowboy Mouth performance into something between a rock concert and a revival meeting.True to form, Fred's humor and humanity shone through the interview—equal parts laughter, storytelling, and that unmistakable “let it go” spirit that has powered Cowboy Mouth since their debut album Are You With Me? in 1992.www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. Well, officially Kickstarter hadn't started yet. It would be another four years before that happened. However, I ran the Kickstarter in a very similar way. I set different levels and ended up raising over $10,000 to fund the album. Admittedly, that was not all profit. In fact, I had far higher expenses back then because I didn't know how to run a fundraising campaign back then. Nevertheless, it was a huge success and I was able to order 1000 copies of this CD. I think I've printed over 3000 copies of this CD since it was released. But of course, now it is no longer available on CD with me at least. It's only available as a digital download or on an album pin. On June 6, 2005, I released the second episode of the Cat Lovers Podcast to fund this album. Here's a re-release of that podcast episode. 11:56 - CAT MUSIC LOVERS #2: “WHEN KITTY EYES ARE SMILING”, CATS STUCK IN DRAWERS (REBOOT) A tabby cat stuck in the dresser drawers A letter to Torre from Anthony Creech of Celtic Radio Keeping cats indoors Cat Galaxy, All Cats! Through clear, biblical teaching and personal insight, Will exposes how poor religious practices can distort the gospel and weigh down believers with shame, fear, and obligation. But the message doesn't stop there. This sermon shifts gears into the liberating truth of the resurrection and the arrival of the New Creation. What does it actually mean to be a Christian? What does true loyalty to Christ look like beyond rules, checklists, or cultural Christianity? If you've ever felt disillusioned by religion or burdened by trying to “earn” your place with God, this sermon offers hope, clarity, and the freedom found in the risen Jesus.

Nothing beats the thundering energy and human drama that unfolds across the surface of an automotive racetrack. Photographers who specialize in this adrenaline-fueled niche are best served by nerves of steel and the high endurance to lug multiple cameras and the long lenses needed to freeze the action. In today's show, we plunge headfirst into what it takes to cover the many facets of auto racing with two of the finest professionals in the field, photographers Camden Thrasher and Jamey Price. From stories of unexpected hurdles to access when scouting an unfamiliar course to the mix of visual stimulation and extreme exhaustion that accompanies a 24-hour endurance race, our chat is full of real-world insights. We also discuss the gear these photographers rely on and the wear and tear that comes with hard core use.   And for listeners who've always wanted to try their hand at motor sports photography, Jamey Price shares some parting advice. “You don't build a portfolio by getting credentials,” he says. “You build a portfolio by going to races as a fan, bringing your camera, and making cool pictures from fan areas. Tell stories, do something different.” Guests: Camden Thrasher & Jamey Price Episode Timeline: 3:46: Jamey's start as a jockey and making comparisons between photographing horse racing and motorsports 8:29: Camden's early start attending auto races, then discovering photography through exploring his father's film camera as a cool mechanical device. 10:25: Both photographers share their trajectory from starting out as a motor sports photographer to making it into a career. 18:04: A race day timeline and the many variables involved in motor sports photography. 27:28: Camaraderie & competition between photographers working the circuit, etiquette when shooting, and the importance of individual style. 37:24: The thrill of endurance racing and how photographing these 24-hour-long races differs from other types of motor sporting events. 43:38: Episode Break 45:10: Camden and Jamey's go-to camera gear, the long lenses they lug, plus how often they use manual focus, especially when panning through people or trees. 54:50: Getting otherworldly visuals when faced with adverse weather conditions or unique atmospheric effects, despite the physical challenges.  59:15: Wear and tear on camera gear due to the unfriendly environment at the track, plus using broken gear or common objects for creative visual effects. 1:056:08: Camera settings and creative techniques when panning, plus accounting for variables of relative distance combined with motion and speed to achieve a desired result. 1:16:27: Camden & Jamey discuss the use of their motor sports photos and licensing their images to clients. 1:24:13: Parting advice to fans interested in becoming a credentialed motor sport photographer—bring your camera to a race as a fan, and start making pictures!   Guest Bios: Camden Thrasher is a motor sports photographer with a distinctive ability to capture unique scenes of fast action. Growing up in Vancouver, Washington, it was the sound of engines from a nearby racetrack that first drew him to motor sports. After becoming a fixture at the track with his camera during high school, Camden studied automotive design and engineering in college, expecting to work as an engineer or on a pit crew. But the money he was making as a side hustle with his camera convinced him to stick with photography, and he hasn't looked back since. Using a unique slow shutter speed method, perfected over many exposures, Camden revels in showcasing the abstract qualities of gleaming metal, bright lights, and dynamic action that are hallmarks of this sport. Now based out of Atlanta, Georgia, Camden's work has been commissioned by top racing teams and featured in a wide range of media, from print magazines to automotive branding campaigns. Jamey Price is an automotive photographer based in Charlotte, North Carolina, whose motor sports work has taken him to more than 25 countries, and across most of the continental US. Jamey's photography career began while he was competing as a thoroughbred horse racing jockey and exercise rider. During this time, he completed more than 50 races, notching 11 wins in the saddle. His life in horse racing was eventually compiled into the self-published book Chasing: Racing Life in England & Ireland. Yet, in 2011, Jamey's photography career switched from horses to horse-power. Since he began chasing race cars, his images have been published worldwide in magazines, distributed by sports imagery wire services, and featured by top commercial clients. Additionally, Jamey is a LEXAR Elite Artist, since 2014. #TCS #TheChurchSplit The Hodge Twins, self-proclaimed Christian conservatives, recently invited OF star Lily Phillips onto their podcast to flaunt her vulgar work, exposing their audience to the glorification of porn. Worse, they used the platform to slander the church, accusing all pastors and evangelicals of sexual immorality. This isn't just a betrayal of their faith—it's a sign conservatives are losing their way. In this video, we call out this reckless behavior and urge Christians to stop standing silent. When we tolerate this, we open the door to false teachers and grifters. It's time to denounce this nonsense and reclaim the integrity of our values. Watch now and join the conversation. The Rise and Fall of Capturing Christianity

#TCS #TheChurchSplit Once, Capturing Christianity was a thriving YouTube channel dedicated to exploring the intellectual side of Christianity. Cameron Bertuzzi built a platform that welcomed deep conversations between Protestants, Catholics, and skeptics alike. His ecumenical approach exposed many to the richness of Christian thought, making his channel a go-to resource for those wrestling with faith and philosophy. However, after his conversion to Roman Catholicism, things took a drastic turn. Instead of continuing in the spirit of bridge-building, Cameron has increasingly focused on attacking Protestantism—the very tradition that built his audience and supported his work for years. As a result, many of his longtime followers feel alienated, leading to a decline in support and engagement. This is a cautionary tale: no matter how big you get, never forget those who helped you rise. Integrity matters, and when your message shifts from unity to division, even the strongest platforms can crumble. What do you think about Cameron's journey? Mark Clavey sent this picture right after St Patrick's Day 2024: “Hi Marc! Here's our write - up for how we spent St Pat's at O'Malley's Pub... and a few pictures... "There was more March Madness for the band this past Sunday as we celebrated the Day of the Festival of St Patrick with a noon - performance at O'Malley's Pub(Episode 136). The day started around 10:00a as the band started straggling in and setting up. It was a brisk 40° when we loaded in, and would reach a balmy 48° when we loaded out at 4:30. Early - birds had already formed a line by 10:30 – despite the fact that the Pub wouldn't open until 11:30. (This plan was well - advised given the epic proportions of Snake Saturday's one - person - out/one - person - in crowd.) By the time the band started playing at noon, the bar was full and the crowd lively – being more vocal for the sing - alongs than they were for the toasts. There was a larger - than - usual number of Tullamore - fans than is typical for St Patrick's Day (as it was at lunchtime on a Sunday rather than a workday). Shout - outs to Mike, Amy, Anna, and Jason; Ray and Carrie; Eric and Dena; Eric, Linda, and Eleanor; Trey; Connie, Brandie and Rhonda; Shannon; Rob and Mitch; Andrew; Lisa, Craig, Ed, and Mary; Mikayla; and Jenn. Mark successfully navigated the afternoon notwithstanding the return of his chest - supercold (that knocked him out of the February weekend) and having sliced up the index - finger on his strumming hand. (Evidently, while holding a pick between the thumb and the bird - finger is a doable thing, it DOES produce a Charlie - horse at the base of the thumb when you do it for three hours straight.) Said navigation was aided with the Black Bush providing the kind of lubrication that makes your engine tick. We played until 3:30 before turning the stage over to The Kelihans – who would, in turn, hand off the stage to Chance the Arm at 8:00p. In the meantime, Ryan Rancudo and Bob Reeder handled the St Patrick's Day festivities for the audience in the upper cellar. Overall, it was a great afternoon and (we're assuming) a great night as well. (Photos courtesy of Amy Cripe, Mike Moran, and Mary Hanover.)" Best, - Mark”
