Trauma surgeon Martin Takac came to Alaska to climb Denali, the highest mountain in North America. He reached the summit. The hardest part, it seemed, was behind him. Then, on the descent, the ground disappeared. A hidden snow bridge collapsed beneath Martin, dropping him deep into a crevasse on the Kahiltna Glacier. He survived the fall—but his body became wedged so tightly inside the narrowing walls of blue ice that rescuers couldn't simply pull him back out. What followed was an extraordinary 15-hour crevasse rescue involving Denali guides, National Park Service mountaineering rangers, volunteers, a helicopter pilot, and eventually a piece of equipment no one would normally expect to see on a glacier. Meanwhile, Martin was trapped almost completely motionless as the cold slowly pushed his body into profound hypothermia. In this episode of The Crux: True Survival Stories, we follow the rescue hour by hour and explore hidden crevasses, snow bridges, glacier travel, severe hypothermia, and the decisions that can separate an ordinary descent from a fight for survival. 00:00 — Podcast Cold Open00:28 — Trapped in Blue Ice01:43 — Meet Martin Takac02:46 — Finding the Edge04:32 — How Far Can You Go?06:24 — The Seven Summits07:47 — Why Denali Is Different09:44 — The Descent10:22 — A Calculated Risk11:48 — One Last Decision12:51 — What Lies Beneath the Glacier14:12 — One Careful Step16:51 — A Man Disappears18:23 — The Rope Won't Move19:33 — The Trap Inside the Crevasse19:57 — Sixty Feet Down21:35 — The Rescue Begins22:34 — The Cold Takes Over24:58 — Into the Blue26:39 — Running Out of Options29:31 — The Perfect Disguise31:47 — Time Becomes the Enemy33:17 — One Last Idea34:57 — Back Into the Light35:55 — How Is He Still Alive?39:06 — What the Glacier Left Behind References National Park Service. “Two Climbers Rescued from the Kahiltna Glacier.” June 5, 2017.https://www.nps.gov/dena/two-climbers-rescued-from-the-kahiltna-glacier.htm Anchorage Daily News. “Inside the Dramatic, 14-Hour Rescue That Freed a Climber From a Deep Crevasse on Denali.” June 6, 2017.https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/2017/06/06/the-story-behind-the-dramatic-14-hour-rescue-that-freed-a-slovakian-climber-from-a-deep-crevasse-on-denali/ Anchorage Daily News. “Denali Climber Who Survived 15 Hours in Crevasse Says He Is Grateful for a New Life.” June 20, 2017.https://www.adn.com/opinions/2017/06/20/denali-climber-who-survived-15-hours-in-crevasse-says-he-is-grateful-for-a-new-life/ CBS News / Associated Press. “High Drama: 15-Hour Rescue From North America's Tallest Mountain, Alaska's Denali.” June 7, 2017.https://www.cbsnews.com/news/15-hour-rescue-north-americas-tallest-mountain-alaskas-denali/ CBC News. “‘Not for the Claustrophobic': Climber Falls Down Narrow Crevasse on Alaskan Glacier, Rescuers Chip Him Out.” June 8, 2017.https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/denali-crevasse-climber-rescue-alaska-1.4149936 Mountain Trip. “June 2 West Buttress Team — Guides Perform Crevasse Rescue on Unroped, Private Climber.” June 6, 2017.https://mountaintrip.com/trip-reports/new-audio-recording-396/ Unofficial Networks. “Colorado Guides Receive National Bravery Award for Saving Climber's Life on Denali.” September 16, 2022.https://unofficialnetworks.com/2022/09/16/mountain-trip-bravery-award-denali/ WesternSlopeNow (KREX). “Colorado Guides Recognized for Saving Climber's Life.” September 2022.https://www.westernslopenow.com/news/colorado-guides-recognized-for-saving-climbers-life/ Noviny.sk (TV JOJ). “Aljaska: Slovenský Horolezec Spadol do Úzkej Trhliny v Ľade.” June 7, 2017.https://www.noviny.sk/zahranicie/229582-aljaska-slovensky-horolezec-spadol-do-uzkej-trhliny-v-lade U.S. Geological Survey. “Geology of Denali National Park and Preserve.”https://www.usgs.gov/geology-and-ecology-of-national-parks/geology-denali-national-park-and-preserve Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. While both can make separation stressful, knowing which one you're dealing with can completely change your strategy.Bill explains the warning signs of a high conflict personality, why these individuals often blame everyone but themselves, and how they can keep families locked in conflict for years. Highguard has done the most amazing race to the bottom we've ever seen. It has managed to out-concord Concord! But that's not all the drama for this week. Ubisoft has decided to Ubisoft all over themselves yet again, Xbox Wrapped didn't happen because apparently Microsoft ran out of money and people are still developing for the Xbox One... Welcome to the start of 2026, I suppose.

40 years ago this week, at 8.30am on July 8, 1985, a 15-seater aircraft with a full complement of passengers took off from Waterford airport to London Gatwick on the inaugural flight of a new Irish airline called Ryanair. Air travel, and in some ways Ireland itself, would never be the same again. Fast forward four decades and you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't travelled with Ryanair and, let's be honest, complained about them. But, despite the extra charges, minimal leg room and marketing stunts, we just keep coming back for more. Host: Kevin Doyle Guest: John MulliganSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Next week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will stand before the European Parliament in Strasbourg to face a no-confidence vote. This is the first time in over a decade that a Commission president has been dragged into such a debate. And although the outcome is all but certain, the motion is very unlikely to pass, it's more symbolic of the mounting pressure von der Leyen is under. In this episode, Valeria sits down with Stassi Schroeder for a conversation that's equal parts hilarious, honest, and unexpectedly deep. They talk about Stassi's early experiences in the spotlight and what it feels like to return to reality TV with Vanderpump Villa after years of personal growth. She opens up about the emotional toll of growing up on camera, how motherhood has changed her, and why she's giving more attention to what matters most now. Stassi shares how writing her latest book helped her rethink ambition, identity, and the myth of balance. She also reveals her decade-long struggle with self-harm and what helped her finally stop. The two dive into joy as a healing practice, the emotional cost of perfectionism, and why fashion is still one of Stassi's favorite forms of self-expression (just don't expect her to wear neon or crop tops). They also get into motherhood, mental health, alone time as a survival tool, and even egg-based spiritual cleansing. This is a layered look at what it really means to evolve, how to stay grounded in chaos, and how to laugh at yourself along the way. Ever rolled a 6 and thought your character was doomed? Think again. In this episode, the RPGBOT crew dives deep into the art of playing characters with low stats—and why it might just be the best decision you ever make at the table. From bumbling barbarians to clueless clerics and grumpy rogues who can't charm their way out of a paper bag, the hosts break down how weaknesses can drive unforgettable moments in storytelling and gameplay. We explore every major attribute—Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma—and how a “bad” roll can lead to brilliant roleplay. With examples pulled from pop culture, personal campaigns, and creative builds, this episode is a must-listen for players looking to level up their character depth. Whether you're new to TTRPGs or a veteran looking for inspiration, this episode will challenge the way you think about dump stats—and maybe even make you hope for a low roll next time. Links 2024 Player's Handbook (affiliate link) Rizz (short for Charisma) Key Takeaways: Weaknesses aren't a flaw—they're fuel for great storytelling. Dump stats offer unexpected roleplaying gold. Low Strength? You can still be the hero of the story. A clumsy, low-Dex character can shine with the right narrative. Constitution isn't just about HP—it affects how you play every scene. Intelligence can drive your character's logic, even when it's lacking. Low Wisdom can create characters who act before they think—with wild results. Charisma isn't about looks; it's about how your character moves through the world. Characters are defined by their challenges, not their stat bonuses. Every attribute is an opportunity for memorable moments—good or bad. Great roleplay comes from embracing the flaws, not ignoring them. Group dynamics matter—roleplaying low stats should uplift the table, not derail it. Collaboration with the DM can turn a dump stat into a story arc centerpiece. Relatable characters often come from a mix of strengths, flaws, and humanity. Examples like Rocket and Roy Kent show that depth doesn't require perfection. This week, the shakeups and confusion at OpenAI have come to a conclusion. Sam Altman returns to his position as CEO at OpenAI after its board fired him, which upset most of the company’s staff as well as others invested in OpenAI's work in the generative artificial intelligence sector. Plus, Ryan Vogt resigned as CEO of the driverless tech startup Cruise, following a series of traffic collisions and accidents. On top of all that, Changpeng Zhao, the founder of cryptocurrency exchange Binance, pleaded guilty to money laundering violations. What do venture capitalists think about all these disruptions and where will their money go now? Marketplace's Lily Jamali is joined by Jewel Burks Solomon, managing partner at Collab Capital, for her take on those stories.
