Emmy nominated documentary producer, author, and speaker Steven C. Smith joins the podcast to discuss his book MUSIC BY MAX STEINER: THE EPIC LIFE OF HOLLYWOOD'S MOST INFLUENTIAL COMPOSER.During his illustrious career, composer Max Steiner scored over 300 films and was nominated for 24 Academy Awards. We explore Steiner's career highlights starting with the groundbreaking King Kong (1933), before detailing his work on the beloved “Gone with the Wind” (1939) and the classic “Casablanca" (1942). We then review Max Steiner's score on two Warner Archive releases in March of 2022, starting with the 1937 version of “A Star is Born” starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, and the 1942 James Cagney World War II classic “Captains of the Clouds.”Mr. Smith also touches on Steiner's positive working relationships with director Michael Curtiz, Warner Bros studio boss Jack Warner, actresses Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, and the relentless David O. Selznick. And we discuss Max Steiner's tireless efforts on behalf of composer residuals, something that eventually happened toward the end of his career and guaranteed his financial comfort, before briefly touching on Steiner's influence on some contemporary composers and filmmakers. And finally, Mr. Smith provides his opinion on the recent decision by the Academy of Motion Pictures to not broadcast live the Oscar for “Best Original Score” and what that might mean for the future of the broadcast, and what Max Steiner would have thought of this decision.LINKSSteven C. In this episode we welcome back Steven C. Smith, author of A Heart At Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Hermann, to discuss the score to The Ghost & Mrs. Muir (1947), directed by Joseph Mankiewicz and starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison.
Our annual celebration of film composers is brought to a new level with our guest Steven C. Smith, who conducts us on a tour of great composers--Max Steiner, David Raksin, Bernard Herrmann, and more--and their work on film and on stage.
Distinguished author Steven C. Smith and composer & conductor William Stromberg discuss the lineage that connects John Williams and the great composers of the Golden Age of Hollywood, including Bernard Herrmann and Max Steiner John Williams is the film composer who, more than any other, was able to take the great tradition of the Golden Age of Hollywood's film music and revive it for modern audiences. Thanks to the impressive box office success of such films as Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Superman, the late 1970s saw a resurgence of the classic symphonic film score as intended by the great composers of the Golden Age: Max Steiner, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Alfred Newman, Dimitri Tiomkin, Miklós Rózsa, Franz Waxman, were the forefathers of what is commonly referred as "the Hollywood sound", i.e. the lush, romantic orchestral vernacular in vogue during the 1930s, '40s and '50s, mostly based on the great tradition of Late Romantic symphonic music from Europe, of which all the aforementioned composers were all natural descendants. This type of vibrant, colorful and emotional musical accompaniment defined Hollywood's film music until the dramatic turn of the tide known as the end of the studio era in the early 1960s. John Williams restored almost single-handedly that tradition with a sincere, heartfelt homage to those musical stylings and a new renaissance of film music began. This is the starting point of this new episode of the Legacy Conversations series on The Legacy of John Williams podcast, featuring two very esteemed and distinguished special guests who are among the most respected authorities on the subject of classic film music: author Steven C. Smith and composer/conductor William T. Stromberg. Steven is an Emmy-nominated documentary producer, author, and speaker who specializes in Hollywood history and profiles of contemporary filmmakers. He is the author of two acclaimed biographies: Music by Max Steiner: The Epic Life of Hollywood's Most Influential Composer (Oxford University Press), and A Heart at Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Herrmann (University of California Press). William T. Stromberg is a respected composer and conductor working in the film music business since the late 1980s. Together with his artistic partner John W. Morgan, he produced an impressive amount of brand-new recordings of classic film scores from the Golden Age of Hollywood by Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Franz Waxman, Dimitri Tiomkin and other illustrious composers, including premiere complete recordings of such iconic scores as King Kong, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Fahrenheit 451, The Egyptian. The profound expertise and knowledge of both Steven C. Smith and William Stromberg make them the ideal guests to talk about the lineage that connects John Williams to the great tradition of the Golden Age of Hollywood's film music, especially to composers like Max Steiner and Bernard Herrmann. Indeed, revered contemporary film composers like John Williams and Danny Elfman use the same techniques that Steiner himself perfected in his iconic work for such classics as Casablanca, King Kong, Gone with the Wind, The Searchers, Now, Voyager, the Astaire-Rogers musicals, and over 200 other titles. And Steiner's private life was a drama all its own. Born into a legendary Austrian theatrical dynasty, he became one of Hollywood's top-paid composers. But he was also constantly in debt--the inevitable result of gambling, financial mismanagement, four marriages, and the actions of his emotionally troubled son. Steven C. Smith is a four-time Emmy-nominated producer and author whose latest book is Music by Max Steiner: The Epic Life of Hollywood's Most Influential Composer (Oxford University Press; April 2020). His biography A Heart at Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Herrmann received the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award, and served as the primary research source for the Oscar-nominated documentary Music for the Movies: Bernard Herrmann. He has written about film and music for the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly and the Hollywood Reporter.

Spirituality In Episode 7, best-selling author and biblical scholar, Dr. Steven C. Smith, explains why some biblical critics overlooked or diminished "priesthood" in the OT, and he explains why this happened and its implications. Dr. Smith then launches into the Jewish and biblical evidence for indeed seeing Adam as God's "high priest," and how the OT is only understood when "temple" and "priesthood" are front and center. Not only so, he explains how all of Scripture is saturated with priestly figures, priestly themes, and priestly sacrifice.
