Újabb hollywoodi klasszikust pótoltunk a héten: az All About Eve (Mindent Éváról) Joseph Mankiewicz rendezése 1950-ből. A filmet rekordszámú, 14 Oscarra jelölték, amelyből ugyancsak rekordszámú, négy jelölést kaptak a színésznők. A Mindent Éváról a New York-i színészvilágban, a Broadway környezetében játszódik - milyen általános, és ma is érvényes állításokat fogalmaz meg a sztárságról? Hogyan száll szembe a műfaji sztereotípiákkal az átverésekkel, rivalizálással, szélhámossággal foglakozó történet? Miért lenyűgözően sokrétű Bette Davis alakítása a negyvenes éveiben járó színpadi legenda, Margo Channing szerepében? Anne Baxter hogyan lepi meg a nézőket a feltörő üdvöske, Eve Harrington szerepében? George Sanders játssza a kritikust, Addison DeWittet, akin keresztül az egész sajtóról alkot képet Mankiewicz filmje.

A fascinating, complex dual biography of Hollywood's most dazzling—and famous—brothers, and a dark, riveting portrait of competition, love, and enmity that ultimately undid them both. One most famous for having written Citizen Kane; the other, All About Eve; one who only wrote screenplays but believed himself to be a serious playwright, slowly dying of alcoholism and disappointment; the other a four-time Academy Award-winning director, auteur, sorcerer, and seducer of leading ladies, one of Hollywood's most literate and intelligent filmmakers. Herman Mankiewicz brought us the Marx Brothers' Monkey Business, Horse Feathers, and Duck Soup and W. C. Fields' Million Dollar Legs, wrote screenplays for Dinner at Eight and Pride of the Yankees, and cowrote Citizen Kane (Pauline Kael proclaimed that the script was mostly Herman's) and 89 others. Talented, witty (Alexander Woollcott thought him "the funniest man who ever lived"), huge-hearted, and wildly immature, Herman was a figure of renown and success. Herman went to Hollywood in 1926, was almost immediately successful (his telegram to Ben Hecht back east: "Millions are to be grabbed out here and your only competition is idiots. Don't let this get around.") and became one of the highest-paid screenwriters in Hollywood. Joe, eleven years younger, a focused, organized, and disciplined writer with a far more distinguished career, eventually surpassed his worshipped older brother, producing The Philadelphia Story, writing and directing A Letter to Three Wives and All About Eve, both of which won him Oscars before seeing his career upended by the spectacular fiasco of Cleopatra. In Competing with Idiots: Herman and Joe Mankiewicz, a Dual Portrait (Knopf, 2021), we see the lives of these two men—their dreams and desires, their fears and feuds, struggling to free themselves from their dark past; and the driving forces that kept them bound to a system they loved and hated. In one of the most famously torrid love affairs of all time, defined by extramarital cheating, lavish outfits, histrionics, and the shadow of collapsing empires, this episode's main characters define obsession and the insanity of passion. No, not Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton! Antony and Cleopatra! Picking up where “Julius Caesar” left off, Shakespeare cranks up the operatic dialogue and battle scenes as Rome tears itself asunder. Will and James discuss why Cleopatra is one of the most fascinating women in Shakespeare, the amazing language throughout the play, and whether their relationship represents puppy love or a clichéd midlife crisis.CreditsIntro Music: Jon Sayles, "The Witches' Dance" (composed by anonymous)Outro Music: Jon Sayles, “Saltarello” (composed by anonymous)Illustrative Excerpts: “Cleopatra,” dir. On today’s episode, I talked with my cousin, Kelly, the executive editor on We are Bookish who also has a master’s degree in screenwriting, and you can tell by what she says in the show. Kelly picked 1950’s All About Eve, the first Best Picture winner we are talking about on the show. Written and directed by Joseph Mankiewicz, who adapted the script from a short story called The Wisdom of Eve by Mary Orr, All About Eve is a film that personifies theater by presenting the people who run them, play in them, and who obsessively consume it and the vicious cycle of it all. All About Eve due to its elegant and sharp-witted writing is often to be the greatest screenplay ever written, this is also due to the many interpretations people glean from the film, whether it be how women treat each other, how age plays a factor in acting, what does it mean to be successful as a woman and comments on sexuality making its appeal to be inherently intriguing to audiences ever since it was released in 1950. All About Eve is well, all about Eve, played by Anne Baxter in the sense of her relationship to Margot Channing, played by Bette Davis. Eve is obsessed with Margo and goes to see every show the actress is in, and one night she is invited to meet her matinee idol and tells Margo the tragic story of her life. Margo pities Eve and hires her, and even shelters her in her own home, her social circles, and professional career that is until Eve starts to pull on some of Margo’s established threads. So sit back, relax and fasten your seatbelts for a bumpy night. You can purchase All About Eve here. Come in and know me better, plan! It's Day 6 of the 25 Days of a Christmas Carol and boy howdy do we have a piece of art for you today. In 1964, the United Nations produced a series of television movies to try and convey to the public at large what their mission was. To do this, they reached out to a number of great screenwriters and directors and Rod Serling and Joseph Mankiewicz came together for a very heavy and beautiful updated take on the Christmas Carol story. Joining me to pick through this beautiful piece of propaganda is Boston comedy legend and all-around great guy, Tony V. Tony has a new hour special available on Amazon called "Two Boston Guys" that he released with Jimmy Dunn that you absolutely need to check out. He's one of the funniest and most thoughtful people I know and I was so happy he could carve out a little time right before Thanksgiving to talk about this hidden gem of a movie. The story is based on actress/writer Mary Orr’s short story for Cosmopolitan magazine “The Wisdom of Eve” published in December 1946. It tells the tale of an actress (Margo Channing) who is threatened by a younger ingenue, Eve Harrington. At the time, people suspected it was secretly about the supposed rivalry on Broadway between Tallulah Bankhead and her understudy Lizabeth Scott. Orr claims it was actually about Martina Lawrence and Elizabeth Bergner.  The story was bought by 20th Century Fox for $5000 and writer/director Joseph Mankiewicz created the script that would become the classic film that won six Academy Awards, fantastic performances, and a plethora of quotable lines that have lasted to this day.  In this ep the Margos discuss: The All About Eve origin story Which actors did (and did not) get along Trivia about the film and behind the scenes gossip The amazing women in the film The unusual number of retakes created a year after the film was first made The cast  Bette Davis (Margo Channing,) Anne Baxter (Eve Harrington,) George Sanders (Addison DeWitt,) Celeste Holm (Karen Richards,) Gary Merill (Bill Simpson,) Marilyn Monroe (Miss Casswell,) and Thelma Ritter (Birdie Coonan.)  Clips Featured: All About Eve  trailer Eve meets Miss Casswell “Fasten your seatbelts…” Bill loves Margo Margo describes what it means to be a woman Eve now belongs to Addison Outro music Bette Davis Eyes (Performed by Kim Carnes) Join our Patreon page to help support the show! https://www.patreon.com/bookversusmovie  Book Vs. From Adrian Martin, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die: "A lot of walking occurs in this engaging Argentinian crime lark.  The on-foot journey of two swindlers, Marcos (Ricardo Darin) and Juan (Gaston Pauls) offers, in passing, an understated documentary on Buenos Aries in the 21st century.  But as these characters imagine the scams they might pull, their steps propel them into the charged space of a fiction. "Debut director Fabian Bielinsky maintains a firm balance between the mundane and the thrilling.  Much of the film eschews a musical score, giving extra weight to the passing seconds.  But when music is finally allowed in, the effect carries a more energetic wallop than in most bigger-budget caper movies. "Bielinsky clearly adores the Hollywood classics by directors such as Billy Wilder and Joseph Mankiewicz concerning elaborate, double-crossing deceits.  Juan learns early on not to take at face value whatever misfortune occurs around him, because it could so easily be a con engineered by the shifty Marcos.  Such a tricky narrative courts the risk, inherent in this type of story, of creating an ever-escalating spiral of one-upmanship.  But Bielinsky has a special trump card up his sleeve, and that is the reality factor.  The moment in which Argentina's dire economic crisis intervenes is a real highlight." The practice of decorating soldiers' graves with flowers is an ancient custom.[5] Soldiers' graves were decorated in the U.S. before[6] and during the American Civil War. Some believe that an annual cemetery decoration practice began before the American Civil War and thus may reflect the real origin of the "memorial day" idea. Annual Decoration Days for particular cemeteries are still held on a Sunday in late spring or early summer in some rural areas of the American South, notably in the mountain areas. In cases involving a family graveyard where remote ancestors as well as those who were deceased more recently are buried, this may take on the character of an extended family reunion to which some people travel hundreds of miles. People gather on the designated day and put flowers on graves and renew contacts with relatives and others. There often is a religious service and a picnic-like "dinner on the grounds," the traditional term for a potluck meal at a church. The Richmond Times-Dispatch newspaper claimed in 1906 that Warrenton, Virginia, was the location of the first Civil War soldier's grave ever to be decorated; the date cited was June 3, 1861. There is also documentation that women in Savannah, Georgia, decorated Confederate soldiers' graves in 1862. The 1863 cemetery dedication at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, was, of course, a ceremony of commemoration at the graves of dead soldiers. In addition, local historians in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, claim that ladies there decorated soldiers' graves on July 4, 1864, and Boalsburg promotes itself as the birthplace of Memorial Day. Following President Abraham Lincoln's assassination in April 1865, commemorations were ubiquitous. The sheer number of soldiers of both sides who died in the Civil War (more than 600,000) meant that burial and memorialization took on new cultural significance. Under the leadership of women during the war, an increasingly formal practice of decorating graves had taken shape. In 1865, the federal government began creating national military cemeteries for the Union war dead. Historian David W. Blight, citing an observance after the end of the Civil War in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 1, 1865, has claimed that "African Americans invented Memorial Day in Charleston, South Carolina," based on accounts in the Charleston Daily Courier and coverage by the New York Tribune. But in 2012 Blight stated that he "has no evidence" that the event in Charleston inspired the establishment of Memorial Day across the country. Accordingly, Snopes labels the claim that the holiday began in Charleston "false." The Federal Government has designated an "official" birthplace of the holiday. On May 26, 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the presidential proclamation naming Waterloo, New York, as the holder of the title. This action followed House Concurrent Resolution 587, in which the 89th Congress had officially recognized that the patriotic tradition of observing Memorial Day had begun one hundred years prior in Waterloo, New York. Snopes warns that the Waterloo legend is apocryphal. There is no dispute that the holiday gained national recognition after the American Civil War in 1868, when General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, various Union and Confederate memorial traditions, celebrated on different days, merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. The roundtable included James Baldwin, Harry Belafonte, Marlon Brando, Charlton Heston, Sidney Poitier, Joseph Mankiewicz, and David Schoenbrun Memorial Day information link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Day
