1984 anti-war song by British band Frankie Goes to Hollywood

A great guy, a wonderful chat and a borderline genius of the keyboard, Andy Richards played on seven number ones of the 80s and loads more hits besides (as I attempt to define throughout the conversation). 1. THE EARLY YEARS (PRE-1980-83)Andy's background in music culminating in him reaching the studio,And how working on jingles set him up for 80s chart success (cf Relax).2. FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD (1983-86)Andy sprinkles his magic synth-dust all over Relax for Trevor Horn as well as working on Two Tribes and the Welcome to the Pleasure Dome LP.Also discussed is the contrast with working on the follow-up, Liverpool.Rage Hard!3. TREVOR HORN (1983-86)As well as Frankie, Andy worked on other Trevor Horn projects such asDuck Rock, the massively influential Propaganda LP, A Secret Wish plusthe trifecta of 1985 pop perfection singles; Duel, Cry and Slave To The Rhythm.4. PETER COLLINS (1983-89)Another producer Andy cultivated a long working relationship with in the 80s wasthe late Peter Collins. From the pop of Nik Kershaw to the rawk of Rush andGary Moore.EITHER/ORNew feature (any excuse for another QFR). Andy's 80s choices. Duran or Wham was a bit of a no brainer (unless he secretly worked on The Reflex as well)more on Andy at andyrichards.comTo help support the pod, donations gratefully received via PayPal at80sography@gmail.comSend us a text
Welcome to the Pleasuredome by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, released in 1984, is an ambitious and theatrical debut album that blends new wave, synth-pop, and dance music with a bold, provocative aesthetic. Spanning over an hour, the double album features iconic hits like "Relax" and "Two Tribes," which challenged social norms and pushed boundaries with their suggestive lyrics and politically charged messages. The album's title track, a sprawling 13-minute epic, encapsulates the hedonistic, larger-than-life energy of the band. Welcome to the Pleasuredome became a defining statement of 80s pop culture and remains a symbol of flamboyance and rebellion.Listen to the album on Apple MusicListen to the album on SpotifyWhat did you think of this album? A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the pop band Frankie Goes To Hollywood in just under thirty minutes.Goes to Hollywood signed to ZTT Records in 1983. Their debut album, Welcome to the Pleasuredome was released in 1984. Produced by Trevor Horn, it achieved advance sales of more than a million, and their first three singles, Relax, Two Tribes and The Power of Love, reached number one on the UK singles chart.Their second album, Liverpool was released in 1986. The album sold fewer copies, and they disbanded acrimoniously the following year. Holly Johnson successfully sued ZTT to leave his contract and began a solo career. He declined invitations to reunite and attempted to block the band from using the Frankie name. In 2004, the group reunited without Holly Johnson and Brian Nash to perform at a Prince's Trust charity concert, with Ryan Molloy on vocals, and underwent a subsequent tour in 2005. In 2011, ZTT reissued an expanded edition of Liverpool, plus The Art of the 12", a compilation of tracks from ZTT artists including Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Universal Music purchased ZTT in 2017. The group reunited with Johnson and Nash for the first time since 1987 to perform for the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest.Holly Johnson and Paul Rutherford were openly gay throughout the group's existence, making Frankie Goes to Hollywood the first openly gay major pop act, with gay rights and sexuality becoming a theme of their music and performances. The BBC famously banned them from broadcast, which only generated further publicity. It has been reported that a Frankie Goes to Hollywood biographical film is in development, based on Johnson's memoir. Bernard Rose, who was responsible for the Relax music video, is set to direct, with Callum Scott Howells as Johnson. In this episode I am in conversation with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

Mit ihrem Debütalbum "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" knüpften Frankie Goes To Hollywood nahtlos an ihren Erfolg der vorherigen Singles "Relax" und "Two Tribes" an. __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" wird im Podcast gesprochen (13:48) – "The World Is My Oyster"(17:17) – "Welcome To The Pleasuredome"(29:28) – "Relax"(41:49) – "Two Tribes"(48:07) – "Tag"(49:15) – "Born To Run"(55:45) – "The Power Of Love"__________ Über diese Songs wird außerdem im Podcast gesprochen (02:38) – "Moonlight Shadow" von Maggie Reilly(04:30) – "Self Control" von Laura Branigan(21:04) – "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" von Holly Johnson (44:56) – "Russians" von Sting(45:11) – "Leningrad" von Billy Joel(59:59) – "The Power Of Love" von Jennifer Rush(01:00:20) – "The Power Of Love" von Huey Lewis And The News__________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge "Reggatta De Blanc" findet ihr hier: https://www.swr.de/swr1/rp/meilensteine/swr1-meilensteine-frankie-goes-to-hollywood-welcome-to-the-pleasuredome-100.html __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? “What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back!”If you were really down with the cool kids in 1984, you would have most definitely have been passing around the school prized C90 cassettes featuring much copied Streetsounds compilations. And somewhere in there was Kurtis Blow's AJ Scratch track with those immortal sampled words from the Jimmy Castor Bunch in 1972. Straight out onto The BMXs and down to throw some funky worm shapes on that strip of lino!Or, in this writer's case, 1984 was mainly spent in a bedroom hovering over the play and pause button to catch a clean edit (without Simon Bates) of Two Tribes, still at number one after 5 weeks! But which mix would we get this week? Now, THIS was anticipation, pop kids!1984. A pop year of decadence, contradictions, conflict, controversy and coming of age. A year that authors (and the BBC) told us would feature impending, inevitable Armageddon. Annihilation, it turned out, came in the shape of a plethora of 12” mixes, plastic smiles, snoods, 808 drum machines, hairspray, neon and (red) balloons. How was it for you?In the third decade of the 21st century, a time surely we wouldn't (a) remember 1984 or (b) still be around to remember 1984, the team at NOW Music HQ presented the second in a (now) glorious series of curated Yearbooks. And what an album (and accompanying extra volume!) we have to rediscover. The sun is most definitely shining brighter than Doris Day!So for this special episode we're joined by two poptastic friends of the show to take a deep dive into 1984. Journalist, DJ and author Ian Wade and journalist, author and broadcaster Jude Rogers.Jude can be found contributing musings and writing about music, culture and much more in The Guardian, Observer and The Quietus amongst many others. Her first (best selling!) book, The Sound of Being Human: How Music Shapes Our Lives is available through White Rabbit books.Ian has written for Classic Pop, Record Collector, The Quietus, Official Charts, Sunday Times Culture as well as doing time at such titles as Smash Hits and The Face many years ago. He has worked as a PR on BBC's Later… with Jools Holland and occasionally DJs at Spiritland and Duckie. And his debut book 1984: The Year Pop went Queer is published by NineEight Books in July 2024.And whilst we don't take a forensic look at every one of the 80 tracks on the 1984 Yearbook (and the further 60 on the extra volume) we instead provide you with an opportunity to explore the sights, sounds, culture, music, genres, tribes and (school!) fashion that makes this year so thoroughly iconic for so many reasons.Join us then, as we turn up the neon and dance through mutually agreed destruction in celebration of 1984! Trevor Horn was impressed by Frankie Goes To Hollywood when he heard them on a radio show. He decided to produce their first single, "Relax," which became a massive hit in the UK. The band's second single, "Two Tribes," also topped the charts, and their third single, "The Power of Love," became another number one hit. The song was originally written as a ballad, but Trevor Horn's production turned it into a powerful and emotional anthem that still resonates with audiences today. Join us on this episode of "The Backstage Pass - The Story Behind the Song" as we explore the making of 'The Power Of Love'
This is my second sit-down interview with Trevor Horn and you'll hear why it's nothing like the first time. The previous one (episode 43) made an impression with Wikipedia's editors, who included Trevor's “I believe in Judaism, more than I believe in anything else” as a reference. On leaving last time, Trevor told me at the door, "no one ever asked me about that before". In this in-depth conversation about his life and career, Trevor talks about growing up as a post-war baby boomer in Hetton-le-Hole and how the family left the Durham village to secure their future in the more prosperous midlands (as my own family had done a generation before). We discuss Paul McCartney's constant reinvention as the key to longevity and his own determination to keep working. Then there's Rod and the magnificent orchestral album, his most recent production. Trevor also pays a touching tribute to his late wife, Jill Sinclair, “the first person who told me I was good. There's also a couple of Jewish jokes she used to tell him too. And we expand on his religious beliefs, how Shabbat is a “great idea” and reading the Torah illuminating. Trevor's been touring the US as Seal's musical director with support band, The Buggles, reuniting with his old friend, Geoff Downes. It was their number one hit, “Video Killed The Radio Star” which propelled him to fame before he became a producer on Jill's recommendation. There's a stem-by-stem analysis of the brilliant “whiz bang” noises of Owner of a Lonely Heart, The Art of Noise, ABC's band manifesto, the Belfast Child of The Simple Minds and why Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood sounds like the Hatikvah, Israel's national anthem! I had another hour of questions for Trevor, but I hope this gives you a snapshot of what a talented and modest man he is, and why I've been a fan since my teenage years. Dear Listener, this is Trevor Horn II. Jonny Gould's Jewish State is brought to you with Dangoor Education.

Alexa, show me 1984.If you were to ask a certain searchable device (others are, obviously available), there's a high probability that the year George Orwell predicted would see us living in a terrifying future nightmare would instead be adorned with a wash of neon, colour and an array of sunshine pop. And the character staring back at us wouldn't be Big Brother, it was a pig in shades. Of course!(And is there anything cooler?)Yes, it's here! July 1984, and the third volume of the world famous NOW That's What I Call Music series had arrived and quite literally rocketed - locomotion style - to the top of the charts. And for sure, the compilation album was back, Back, BACK!A glittering selection of the pop's finest (and The Art Company) lined up to highlight why 1984 is often (argue with us here) cited as one of the greatest music years. From Duran Duran's worldwide fl-fl-flexing monster smash, to Wham! shining brighter than Doris Day, NOW3 features some of the decades biggest hits. Take a look at Phil Collins, wait for pizza (talking some Italian, probably) with Bananarama, even stay up way beyond bedtime to catch falling men with The Weather Girls. Wow!But WAIT!Underneath the streamers and balloons of summer 1984, wasn't there just a hint of darkness?Of course there was! Global annihilation never looked or sounded so fabulous (and we're not talking Threads, thanks again BBC)! Nik Kershaw wasn't letting the sun (or his snood) go down, Ultravox had tears in their eyes (shortly before humanity was vaporised) and of course Frankie Goes To Hollywood were on top of the whole mushroom cloud as Two Tribes (and just a smidgeon of Trevor) ruled the airwaves, charts and the 12” mixes whilst we listened to Patrick Allen's public information messages. Chilling? Yes it was, and we haven't even got to The Art Company yet! Brrr! So, let's jump back to summer 1984 with the BBC's music correspondent, Mark Savage to explore the many faceted pop kaleidoscope of 30 Top Chart hits that is Now Music 3. Along the way also find out how Mark discovered pop growing up in Northern Ireland, memories of sun kissed holidays and which record had the neighbours banging on the wall.Plus, the mystery of a very strange cassette tone is - after 30 years - revealed! Geeky? Us? Of course we are!As Cyndi Lauper said, we all have a suitcase of memories - time after time. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In 1984, an American harpsichord player called Scott Ross quit a teaching job in Canada and returned to France, the country that since he was a teenager had been his adopted home. It was the year that Frankie Goes to Hollywood had a Europe-wide hit with Two Tribes and Steve Jobs launched the Macintosh personal computer. But Ross had an idea with more of a baroque feel. In Paris, he met a producer at Radio France, Nicolas Bomsel, and suggested a project that most musicians would consider absurd: recording all 555 keyboard sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti. By 1989, Ross was dead, aged just 38. Did he know he was ill when he pitched the project? Was it a test of human endurance against the odds? Did he succeed? And who was Scott Ross, a man who has been called ‘early music's bad boy' and ‘the John McEnroe of the harpsichord'? Also, how is it that a musician who's widely considered to be the best harpsichord player of his generation remains little known in the UK? These are questions posed by music journalist Phil Hebblethwaite in this Sunday Feature. To find answers, Hebblethwaite travels to France (Montpellier, Assas and Paris), speaking to those who knew and loved Ross, and tracks down two former students of Ross's from his decade in Canada. A portrait of a complex, contradictory musician emerges – a man with a tragic early life who, Hebblethwaite finds, seems to slip further away the better he gets to know him. With contributions from Nicolas Bomsel, Michel Proulx, Marie-Claire Demangel, Henri Prunières, Jocelyne Chaptal, Catherine Perrin, Mario Raskin, and Didier Lestrade. Israel was divided into two kingdoms, a northern kingdom called Israel and a southern Kingdom called Judah made up of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin and around 721 BC. Almost all of the northern kingdom went into a Syrian captivity. But after that it was noted that the southern Kingdom, Judah began to take an interest in Babylon because of the Babylonian practices and traditions which in humans terms could be regarded as elegant for their priests and their princes walked around in great processions, dressed in scarlet and Vermilion robes. They had a knowledge of astrology and numerology and the knowledge of other occult Sciences, which the Jews knew little about, but had a curiosity in, they had established centers of learning and knowledge.Listen for more...Scripture referenced:Revelation 17 + 18Romans 10:1-3Matt 23:23-27Ezekiel 10:18Mark 7:1-3Isaiah 8-9John 8:44, 13:6For more Free books, Sunday teachings and bible studies, please visit us at: https://www.walkinginpower.orgDr. Bern Zumpano is a Pastor and Teacher of the Word of God who has authored several books on Spirit-filled living through relationship with Jesus Christ and walking in the Power of the Holy Spirit. May God bless you all!!
Nearly every Island act seemed impossibly hip, characterful and charismatic and much of that was down to the vision and long-term belief of the man who founded the label and ran it for 30 years. Chris Blackwell beams in from Goldeneye, the Ian Fleming estate he bought in Jamaica, to remember Errol Flynn and his dachshund waterskiing, the wit and charm of Noel Coward, record-buying trips for the local jukeboxes and sound-systems and the story of Millie's My Boy Lollipop, and talks about his relationship with Free, Traffic, Tom Waits, U2 and Roxy Music (also the ones that got away like Madonna). At one point he explains how he and Bob Marley modified Jamaican reggae to give it international appeal and there's a great moment where he relives the overpowering effect of first hearing Trevor Horn's production of Two Tribes. Chris's memoir The Islander is published by Bonnier Books.
