In this episode of One Symphony, Devin Patrick Hughes interviews Lucas Richman, a Grammy winning composer and conductor, exploring his career and insightful perspectives on music and its role in society.  Richman recounts his early exposure to music through composer biographies, sharing an anecdote about writing to Aaron Copland and receiving an encouraging postcard in return, which served as an early inspiration. The discussion moves to Richman's experiences with Leonard Bernstein, highlighting a masterclass on the Academic Festival Overture and the profound impact Bernstein had on his understanding of music and life. Richman emphasizes Bernstein's ability to infuse everything with love and teaching, noting his preference for discussing music with doctors rather than musicians due to their focus on the art rather than business.  Richman discusses his approach to composition, emphasizing his commitment to bringing social issues and awareness into the concert hall. He describes his symphony inspired by Bernstein's words, "This will be our reply to violence is to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before," with movements embodying intensity, beauty, and devotion. He also discusses "The Warming Sea," a piece addressing climate change, and Paths to Dignity, a violin concerto inspired by the issue of homelessness. In Paths to Dignity, Richman musically portrays the word "dignity" using specific notes, aiming to create a conversation and raise awareness. He collaborated with Mitchell Newman, a violinist and advocate for the unsheltered community, to bring attention to the human stories behind homelessness.  Richman reflects on his time as an assistant conductor, which instilled in him the importance of clarity and efficiency. He describes his experience conducting film scores for movies such as Seven and The Village, noting the collaborative nature of the work. Richman also shares his perspective on conducting his own music, expressing that others often bring fresh interpretations that he appreciates. Transitioning to the evolution of the conducting field, Richman acknowledges the influence of mentors like Daniel Lewis and Herbert Blomstedt, emphasizing the significance of respect, intent, and honesty. He expresses concern that some contemporary conductors prioritize showmanship over serving the music and fostering leadership skills. Turning to the role of a music director, Richman underscores the importance of community engagement, fundraising, and collaboration with the board and staff. He highlights initiatives such as streaming concerts, expanding educational programs, and forging relationships with local organizations. He also touches on his involvement in music education, including his piece Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant, which introduces children to classical music through imaginative characters. Thank you for joining us on One Symphony. Special thanks to Lucas Richman for sharing his music and story. Musical selections from today's episode: Brahms: Academic Festival Overture, Op. 80 (Live). A very special literary romp to round off the year! This very special "bookish" episode features the well-read, candid, and occasionally irreverent members of "Buckner's Bookies", a ladies-only book club that meets every few weeks around a dinner table, to talk books, culture, food, politics, and—of course—trashy TV. Sex, drugs, rock n' roll, hostages, immigration, crime, New York in the 70s, Saga Boys, opera, and accordions. Mix all that with some southern gothic blues, and you have yourself a rollicking-yet-thoughtful exploration into six hand-picked, music-themed books that will make you "Hot for Teacher", or perhaps dreaming of becoming a "Paperback Writer". On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got an absolute legend of a singer-songwriter in conversation with a guy who's no slouch himself: Lucinda Williams and M. Ward. Williams has been writing and recording incredible songs since the late 1970s, though she didn't really break through in a huge way until 1998's stone classic Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, which garnered her the Best Contemporary Folk Album Grammy—her second Grammy—but also some of the most well-deserved critical accolades of that year. She certainly didn't rest on those laurels, having released close to a dozen more revered albums since, many of which found themselves also at the Grammy and Americana awards ceremonies—as well as in the hearts of listeners and other songwriters. Last year, Williams released a fantastic memoir about her journey from small-town Louisiana to the music business and beyond. It's a lovely look at a life well lived called Don't Tell Anyone the Secrets I Told You. The other half of today's conversation is M. Ward, another literate singer-songwriter with a varied career whose music can't be easily pinned down—he's been called folk, Americana, and indie-rock, none of which quite do his songs justice. Ward has been making records for 25 years now, and his discography includes not only thoughtful, beautiful solo records, but an entire catalog of albums made with actress Zooey Deschanel under the name She & Him. Ward's latest is last year's Supernatural Thing, another set of songs that feel like they exist out of time. Check out “Too Young to Die” from that album right here. In this conversation, Ward and Williams talk about the time they worked together, when Williams contributed vocals to an M. Ward record back in 2009. Then they get into Williams' memoir and just scratch the surface on her incredible life and career before the conversation turns to their literary influences and more. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:33 – Start of the chat 4:30 – Williams on the hard part of writing a memoir 8:13 – Ward reads his favorite passage from Williams' book 12:58 – Williams recalls meeting famous writers as a child 23:50 – "I want to be James Joyce!" PTSD and children—it's a critical topic. PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is increasingly common in our challenging world, and while it's often difficult to recognize PTSD in adults, it can be even more challenging to determine when a child has PTSD. In fact, there was a time when experts believed children couldn't develop PTSD. Fortunately, we now appreciate the obvious truth that children can develop PTSD if they witness or learn of a traumatic event that is terrifying, shocking, or potentially threatening to the life, safety, or physical integrity of themselves or others. As sensitive information is discussed, listener discretion is advised, particularly if children are present. Helpful resources are provided in the show notes. We all love a great comeback story, and that is what our guest this week brings us. Cecily Decker was an alpine ski racer from the age of six, and spent a stint on the US National team in her teenage years, before a horrific crash and knee injury altered her path. A fierce competitor, Cecily recovered from her injury and returned to ski racing getting a scholarship at Montana State University. But shortly after her collegiate ski racing career started, it was brought to an end by the long-term impacts of her knee injury. Cecily had been introduced to cycling as a teenager by her mom, and after being forced to retire from ski racing she turned to the bike as an outlet. She quickly became the president of the Montana State Cycling club, and her trajectory from bike-commuter to professional off-road cyclist began. Last year Cecily joined the Pinarello Scuderia team, and this year is part of the Life Time Grand Prix. Her season has already kicked off with a bang as she finished 5th at Mid South Gravel last weekend. Ryan returns this week to look back on his time and findings exploring the world of Elvis bootlegs, from soundboards and audience recordings to studio material and fan-made spliced takes. Justin takes the opportunity to loosely discuss some of the history of Elvis bootlegs and try to contextualize where Elvis bootlegs have fit within the larger rock bootleg scene, and the guys ponder whether there is even a future for Elvis bootlegs to offer anything new or interesting now that A) the official collector's label, Follow That Dream, has done a lot of the work both clearing out the vaults and clawing back material originally found on bootlegs and releasing it in the best possible quality and B) not many people buy CDs at all anymore to begin with, with YouTube and digital trading in online circles are the predominant way of obtaining material nowadays. For Song of the Week, Ryan selects the bopping 1957 hit "I Beg Of You" and celebrates its cowriter, Rose Marie McCoy, while Justin picks the 1969 track "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road", effectively an album cut that Elvis still felt strongly enough about to consider bringing into his live setlist a couple times in the 70s.

"Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" would go on to be named The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop (critics) Album of the Year, and to date it is among Rolling Stone's top 500 albums of all time. And for good reason. Williams bemoans (and even moans) about love and loss in songs like "Right In Time," Lake Charles" and "Can't Let Go." And she brilliantly illustrates pain in the title track and also on tunes like "Drunken Angel," "Concrete and Barbed Wire" and more. Williams also captures the Deep South about as good anybody before or since. And because of that, this album is truly "2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten."

Taylor Katherine is a singer/songwriter from Louisville, Kentucky. She is a classically trained vocalist, who studied at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky. She was also selected to be a participant in the 2008 Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts in vocal music. A Frankfort, Kentucky native, Taylor moved to Louisville in 2018. Shortly after, she became enriched by the local music community, and started to sing at open mics. A few months into that, the world shut down due to the pandemic and she lost her service industry job. During this time, Taylor learned how to play her ukulele and began writing her own songs. Now, she has played at venues all around Louisville, and is penned to play at several festivals across the region in the coming year. Her songs make the harsh realities of life both palatable and relatable, with a voice like "honey on a gravel road". Taylor says the highlight of her music career thus far is when Jim James (My Morning Jacket) said she was "real f@&*in' good" at a Louisville show recently. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support

Pacific St Blues & AmericanaSeptember 11, 2022We have a really smokin' show this week including numerous homegrown specials and an in-depth exploration of the music of Chuck Berry. Over the past several months we have explored the roots of 'rock music' of the 60s and 70s. While there are the clear influences of Elvis Presley and Little Richard, less obvious, but arguably more profound, as the influences of three blues artists: Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, and Chuck Berry. It has been suggested, and I agree, that the influence of an artist is determined, at least in part, by the frequency of others covering their music and recording their songs.Specifically, we've examined the musical influences of the King of the Delta Blues, Robert Johnson, Chess Records ' songwriter Willie Dixon, and this week we'll take an in-depth look at the music and influence of the legendary, St Louis born, Chuck Berry, the poet laureate of rock n' roll. Berry spent most of his career recording for the Chicago-based blues label, Chess Records. Along with stable mates Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters, one can make a pretty solid argument that the music we all knew and grew up with had its roots firmly planted at 2010 South Michigan Avenue and the home of Chess Records. Join me today for some great music and good stories. 1. We ventured once again into the Rat's lair - otherwise known as the South Beach studio of Frank 'Rat Bastard' Falestra - and sat down with Miami-via-Pennsylvania singer/songwriter Nick Mencia a.k.a. Nick County to discuss the stunning "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" by Lucinda Williams. The soul-baring songs of Williams transcend any alt-country/American roots-rock labels, and the album is truly a stone cold genre-defying masterpiece!  Songs featured in this episode: If You Still Love Me - Nick County; Mexico - Rachel Angel; Cold Cold Heart - Hank Williams; Right In Time, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, 2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten, Drunken Angel, Concrete and Barbed Wire, Lake Charles, Can't Let Go, I Lost It, Metal Firecracker, Greenville, Still I long For Your Kiss, Joy, Jackson - Lucinda Williams; Me and the Devil Blues - Robert Johnson; Return of the Grievous Angel - Gram Parsons; Can't Let Go - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss; Daddy's Robe - Oly; I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend - Ramones; Simple Twist of Fate - Bob Dylan; You Got To Walk That Lonesome Valley - Mississippi John Hurt; Jesus Is Dead - Nick County

Today the Boys are wowed by the rugged, silver-tongued gent, Johnny McGowan (@johnny_plays_guitar). They talk growing up in Tennessee, learning guitar to get out of chores, and learning how to listen to the music of life. It's a great interview today, and we can't wait for you to hear Johnny play for you (interview starts at 21:20). Of course the Boys have their own music to make; they talk about their favorite color town, fastest gunfights in history, and haulin @$$. It's a musical one! Enjoy.
