Send us a textI spent a decade convinced I had a "broken brain," relying on the highest dose of Adderall just to get by. But what if the biggest struggle of your life becomes your greatest strength? In this special episode, originally recorded during my conversation with Adam Metwally on his podcast 'That One Time,' I'm sharing that very personal story. I recount the 10 years on medication (from age 8 to 18), the anxiety, the feeling of being disconnected, and the pivotal moment I discovered neuroplasticity – the key that unlocked incredible academic success and helped me get off meds for good.Together with Adam, I break down the 4 Pillars that were foundational to my transformation: Sleep, Nutrition, Movement, and Mind. You'll hear the specific, actionable strategies I personally used – like optimizing light exposure for circadian rhythm, managing core body temperature for deep sleep, fueling my brain with targeted nutrition (and avoiding common pitfalls like processed foods and potential heavy metals), harnessing progressive overload training for mental resilience, and implementing powerful time and attention management techniques that allowed me to thrive without medication.Ultimately, I learned to reframe that challenging decade not as a curse, but as the "best thing that ever happened" because it led me to dedicate my life to this work. This conversation goes beyond just my story; it's about turning struggle into strength and reclaiming your power through understanding your own biology. If you're looking to enhance focus naturally, navigate the complexities of ADHD or stimulant medication, or optimize your cognitive performance by mastering the fundamentals, I encourage you to listen to this deep dive recorded on 'That One Time with Adam Metwally'.

In this episode of Building Better Habits, Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche delve into an essential skill for productivity—improving focus. Drawing from personal experiences and practical methodologies, they explore ways to enhance your attention span and align your efforts with meaningful outcomes. Here's a recap of their discussion, peppered with insights to help you sharpen your focus and stay on track. The Challenge of Staying Focused The episode opens with an acknowledgment of the common struggle many face—distractions. From holiday chaos to unexpected snow days, Rob and Michael discuss how life's interruptions can derail even the best-laid plans. The key, they emphasize, lies in understanding the why behind your tasks and maintaining clarity about your goals. They draw a distinction between being busy and being productive, urging listeners to focus on what truly matters. Rob highlights how distractions, such as digital notifications or seemingly minor tasks, often lead to wasted time. By contrast, deliberate planning and mindful action can help you avoid these pitfalls. Techniques to Improve Focus 1. The Pomodoro Technique Rob praises the Pomodoro Technique, a time-management strategy that involves breaking work into focused intervals (typically 25 minutes), followed by short breaks. He suggests starting small by committing to just one or two Pomodoros a day and building from there. This approach helps sustain concentration and prevents burnout. 2. Prioritize Your “Why” Both hosts stress the importance of understanding the purpose behind each task. Before diving into work, ask yourself: What is the goal of this task? How does it contribute to the bigger picture? What does “done” look like for this item? This reflective practice can help you stay focused on tasks that provide real value rather than getting sidetracked by unnecessary details. 3. Avoid Rabbit Holes Rob and Michael caution against spending excessive time on minor, non-essential details. For instance, tweaking the color of a button or perfecting a report with excessive detail can eat away at time without adding meaningful value. Instead, focus on functional outcomes that directly address the needs of your project or customer. Balancing Focus with Functionality and Aesthetics One of the most relatable moments comes when Rob shares his analogy of creating a forest path. He explains that when cutting a path through dense woods, the goal is to clear a functional route—not to make it beautiful right away. Similarly, in software development and other projects, focus first on achieving functionality. Aesthetic enhancements can come later once the foundational work is complete. The Value of Timely Execution Timeliness is a recurring theme in this discussion. The hosts emphasize delivering work just in time—when it's needed. Agile and Scrum methodologies align well with this principle, encouraging developers to prioritize high-value features and tackle them incrementally. By focusing on timely execution, you can avoid overengineering early stages and adapt as requirements evolve. Key Takeaways 1. Build Habits Around Focus Developing habits like regular breaks, structured time management, and prioritization can significantly enhance your focus. Rob suggests starting your day by creating a thoughtful to-do list. Before beginning a task, identify the quickest, most efficient path to completion. 2. Stay Productive, Not Just Busy Michael adds that being productive means focusing on meaningful work rather than trying to appear busy. Clear communication, especially in status reports, ensures that your contributions are visible without unnecessary fluff. 3. Define Completion Understanding what “done” means for each task helps you stay aligned with your goals. Whether you're developing software, writing reports, or managing a team, knowing the endpoint keeps you on track. Focus Challenge of the Week The hosts leave listeners with a practical challenge: Create a daily to-do list. Reflect on the “why” behind each item. Regularly assess whether your efforts align with your goals. By incorporating these habits, you can sharpen your focus, improve productivity, and avoid wasting time on distractions. Improving focus is a skill that requires intention, practice, and self-awareness. Whether you're tackling a software project or managing daily responsibilities, Rob and Michael's strategies provide a solid foundation to enhance your productivity. As they remind us, the key is not to work harder but to work smarter—one habit at a time. Mental Clarity: Daily Habits to Clear Brain Fog And Improve Focus by Michelle Davies BSc Amazon.com Braincareexpert.com Osteoergo.com Mental Clarity: Daily Habits to Clear Brain Fog and Improve Focus Are you struggling with persistent brain fog, anxiety, or feelings of depression that cloud your mind and hinder your daily life? Mental Clarity by Michelle Davies, BSc (Hons) Ost, offers a groundbreaking, holistic, and scientifically grounded approach to regaining control over your mental health. In this transformative book, Michelle, a graduate of osteopathy in 1997 and an internationally acclaimed healer and health consultant, provides actionable strategies to clear brain fog and restore your focus. She delves into the critical role of the glymphatic system and the flow of cerebrospinal fluid—often referred to as the Christ oil—in maintaining mental clarity, and how proper care, including diet, sleep, exercise, and prayer can enhance its function. One of the most surprising and intriguing insights Michelle reveals is how birth itself can cause a type of concussion, creating a blockage in the glymphatic system that, if left unaddressed, can persist for a lifetime. In episode 615, Megan chats to Elan Gelfand about the importance of focus, discipline, consistency, handling judgment, and reigniting passion. Elan Gelfand started the podcast Abundant Thinking where he talks about how to live a purposeful life and how to improve your mindset. Elan has spoken to some of the best coaches in their industry and has valuable insight on how to succeed and how to cultivate a bulletproof mindset. In this episode, you'll learn about creating the right environment to minimize distractions, building discipline slowly to achieve long-term success and adopting a mindset of not caring about others' opinions. Key points discussed: - Start small to build discipline: Begin with small, achievable goals and gradually increase the difficulty, rather than setting unrealistic high expectations that are hard to maintain. - Eliminate distractions: Use tools like the Opal app to block distracting apps and create an environment conducive to focused work. - Consistency leads to discipline: Staying consistent with your habits, even in small ways, can help develop long-term discipline. - Reframe judgment: When faced with judgment from others, remember that people who are doing well are unlikely to waste time criticizing you. - Focus on your own approval: Prioritize your own self-approval over the opinions of others, as you'll be spending the most time with yourself. - Reignite passion by trying new things: Experiment with different aspects of your work to find new sources of inspiration and excitement. - Appreciate the good times: Recognize and be grateful for the moments when you feel passionate and engaged, as they can help you push through the more challenging periods. - Differentiate between focus and discipline: Focus is about staying committed in the moment, while discipline is about consistently doing the same thing over time. - Create the right environment: Deliberately set up your physical and digital surroundings to support your productivity and minimize distractions. - Limit time with negative people: Reduce interactions with those who are judgmental or unsupportive, and instead seek out positive, encouraging relationships. Embracing the Uniqueness of ADHD and My Path to Management. In this episode, I share my recent adult diagnosis of ADHD and how it has reshaped my understanding of myself. Despite years of self-exploration and emotional release, I continued to struggle with poor executive function, time blindness, and distraction. I never thought I would test positive for ADHD, and like many, I often gaslighted myself around my symptoms. I also highlight into why I don't identify with the label 'neurodivergent' and how this diagnosis has provided me with a deeper understanding of self-regulation. Lastly, I explore how hypnosis can be a powerful tool for managing ADHD symptoms.
